Race season is upon us again, and this
year, I'm happy to be involved.
It's unfortunate that I won't be driving, but
a quick look at my tax return this year tells
me that it's probably a much better thing
that I crew, rather than have to dish out the
big bucks to get into the drivers seat.
Taxes. I hate that word. Seriously, who's
idea was it to take our hard earned money
away from us during the year, only to have
to fork over another big cheque in April?
I don't think that the man who decided tax
time was April was a racer. Imagine, if
you will, how many more trick intake
manifolds,
fancy

we'd all be able to run if that multiple
thousands of dollars was going into the
race car budget at the start of the year,

Anyways, with the onset of the race
season, I hope to see submissions from the
road racing community making The Link
the fine publication that it can be.

The President's Report

I don't believe I have ever been so
proud to be a member of The
Motorsport Club of Ottawa this
past Easter Weekend! The Club just
concluded its' second Annual
CASC-OR Race school at
Shannonville Motorsport Park. For
sure, from all perspectives, the
school was an unqualified success.
Oh, But for One More
Chance

Isn't that always the way. This winter's

ORO meeting the two dissenting
Clubs (MCO and CRDA) were outvoted, and the new price structure
was kept! I argued (event though I
remain an ardent proponent that the
organizing clubs MUST make
money), to NOT raise the fees. I
suggested it was better to have
MORE entries at a lesser rate;
rather than fewer racers at higher
rates. Moreover, we as organizers,
were skating on thin ice, as we had
argued originally that we needed to
raise entry fees, to offset higher
insurance costs (they are down),
and ambulance costs (about the
same).
Everyone involved - the volunteer
workers, the instructors, the
students - all had a marvelous time,
working 'hand-in-hand' to ensure
the success of the event. We had
36 students, 22 instructors and a
dozen eager workers! The weather
was superb. The facility, as always,
was excellent. And, at the end of
weekend, as I spoke with Bob
Armstrong, Paul Swinwood, Len
Clue and many others, all that
could be said was that we are a

himself.
Coming up on the last event of the
season, I had the class win locked up,
and was looking forward to some
interesting math amongst myself, Jean
Major, and Jeff Graves, in order to
determine the overall winner.
That event, oh, how I rue that event...
I needed a 100 point score on that day
to make it into the shootout as
described in a past issue by Warren,
and was well on my way. With two
excellent runs in, I only needed to post
a time for my fourth run (after stuffing
the car in Run 1, which I'll blame on
the use of studded tires that I had never
driven before).
So, Bennet comes off the track, and
tells me that the car is running out of
gas, and that he stalled out at least
three times on his run. No problem,
I'll just run up to the gas station, and
put a few bucks... Without a wallet,
that'd be a difficult thing to do, says I...
So, hat in hand, I go to my direct
competition for the championship, and
manage to eke a few dollars out of
them (thanks guys) for the gas that I
need to make my final run.
A quick trip up to the gas station, and
back to the staging area for my run,
and I'm ready to go.
Start flag waves, I take off like a
rocket down the front straight
(remember I said I only needed to
finish?) with my eyes burning red. As
I approach the first corner, I brake,
then I brake harder, then I try to brake
even harder, and then, the stupid
snowbank brings me to a complete
stop. I'm stuck, and that's the end of
my championship run. I swear, they
could hear me curse three counties
over.

Rob's Report: MCO Performance Driving School

Well, this was an effort which had
me on a roller-coaster which at
times left me sleepless at night, but
in the end, I had no reason to worry
about a thing... it went off quite
well.
We started organizing the event in
late February, in hopes that we
could run the school to help
generate a bit of income to stave off
any serious losses which may be
experienced by running the Ted
Powell Summer Trophy Races.
There were times leading in to the
middle of March in which I didn't
have enough students signed up to
even cover the costs of the track
rental with only just over a month
to go before the school. Through
marketing efforts by many people,
we successfully filled the school
during the April monthly Meeting
on April 1st. That was the biggest
hurdle to climb. Now we had the

Miscellaneous
Rumblings II

1. "Close only counts ...
... in horseshoes and grenades!" At
least, that's how the old saying
goes. But to my often peculiar
mind, there's quite a few more.
Some that immediately come to
mind (in no particular order) are:
"Close only counts in horseshoes
and ...
... a politician's promises."
(Especially at election time.)
... corporate financial statements."
... psychiatric diagnoses."
... weather forecasting anywhere in
Southern Ontario." (Especially in
April?)
... budget estimates for public
works projects."
... the interpretation of statistics."
... truth in advertising."
2. Learning the ropes in Motor
Racing - the 1956 Lotus 6
Well, after almost two years of
frustration, which I won't go into
here, I just received my new 2003
Novice race licence. What better
way to celebrate, then, than to go
back 40 years to 1963, and look at
my experiences with my first
Novice licence.
The Lotus 6 (above) was Colin
Chapman's first "production" car,
and what a weird and wonderful
creature it was. Usually sold in kit
form, it could also be had
assembled by the factory, and was
available with several engine and
two gearbox choices. It was also
the
"aesthetically-challenged"

sibling of the Lotus 9 (below), the
latter being enclosed in beautiful
wind-cheating bodywork. This
was, if memory serves me,
designed by Mike Costin, the
"Cos..." in Cosworth, with the
"...worth" being Keith Duckworth.
The "9" had basically the same
chassis and running gear (bottom
centre), with extra hoops to mount
the bodywork. It normally came
fitted with an 1100cc Coventry
Climax FWA sohc engine, and with
disc brakes and bolt-on or centrelock alloy wheels instead of the
Ford drum brakes and steel wheels.
And it didn't stop there. Owners
could and did fit other components.
The "6" which briefly entered my
life in 1963 (below) had the Climax
FWA engine specified for the "9",
the alternate MG "T" gearbox, and
centre-lock wire wheels.
The
standard Lucas coil had been
changed to a Bosch Competition 6v
unit, and it was fitted with larger
British Lockheed drum brakes from
a '56 Humber Super Snipe. This
was a larger luxury cousin of the
Hillman, produced by the Rootes
Group, later Chrysler UK. The
most obvious change, however, was
that the neat little "cycle" fenders
had been replaced by great ugly
"bat-wing" types. This was done so
the car could be run in the 'States,
as the SCCA frowned upon cycle
fenders as being "dangerous". And
yes, that is me in the photo, playing
with the S.U. carburetors.
When I say that the car was
"weird", it's not in the derogatory
sense. It's just that it was a strange
collection of parts from various
sources, including those made "in
house". For example, the front axle
was from the older style '49 to '53
U.K. Ford 10 Anglia (not the later
squared-styling version that some
may remember). A beam axle with
trailing arms in its original
application, Chapman had split it
and hinged it at the centre to make
it an independent swing axle, still
with trailing arms, and then
suspended it by "Chapman" struts,
the original "coil-overs". Other
specified Anglia components were
one of the gearbox choices, the
other being an MG "T" type, the
torque tube drive shaft and rear
axle assembly, the drum brakes,
and the steel wheels. Engine
choices for the "6" were the Anglia
1172cc flat head in various states of
tune, and the MG "T" type XPAG
ohv engine (the last "real" MG
engine) in 1250cc and 1500cc I purchased the car in the late
versions.

friend, Mike Pringle, from Dave
Hunt, who had raced it previously
for a couple of years. My first
drive in the car (with no plates) was
on Weston Rd. in the vicinity of
Steeles Ave. in what is now
Toronto. We weren't concerned
about the lack of plates, as Weston
Rd. was then a two-lane country
road without much traffic. And
after all, we DID have a muffler -

it's that little can at the end of the
tail pipe. The car was light, quick
and responsive, with a lovely
exhaust rap, but darty over the
bumps. And you REALLY had to
know how to double-clutch, as the
transmission was a "crash box".
The synchros, then only on 2nd to
4th, had been removed mainly for
quicker, smoother shifts, but also to
save a pound or two of weight.
Fortunately, the crowd I ran with
then mostly had British cars,
Austins, MGs and such, and we all
prided ourselves in our ability to
downshift into non-synchro 1st
while still moving. I eventually
came to prefer the "6"s gearbox to
the standards of the time. No
waiting for synchros to mesh and
quicker shifts. When you got it
right!!!!!
As we wanted to get some races in
for '63, and as Mike wasn't yet a
member of a club, I was selected as
the driver. I promptly got my Basic
licence (above), and off we and
Dave Hunt went to Waterford Hills
(Mich.), just outside of Detroit
(below). Dave would run in the
SCCA Regional races, and I would
run the Novice races.
you'll notice that you could run
more events with a Basic licence in
those days. In fact, a Basic licence
was then required in order to attend
a Driver's School. After the school
and three Novice races, you could
then apply for your National
licence. And as CASC was the
National governing body at the
time, this truly was a national
licence, and there was no need of
the Regional licences that we have
now. By 1965, the Basic licence
had changed to something akin to
the present one, except that it was
still required for Driver's School.
At Waterford Hills I learned a little
more about the quirks of the car,
and an important lesson on the
difference in speed of the various
cars which were being raced.
The quirk that I remember most
concerned the front wheel bearings,
as they had to be set quite loose for
racing. If they weren't, they seized
upon expanding with the heat, and
broke the stub axles, at which point
the car became a three-wheeler!
But there was a problem with our
wheel bearing setting - the
Scrutineers didn't like it! They had
to be tightened up to pass
scrutineering, and then backed off
to race. And if you forgot? ... I
remember Dave Hunt remarking at
the time that, during races, he and
Ollie Clubine (I think) in his
(much) Improved Production MG
TC would often go out and "throw
wheels at each other."
After prepping the car Dave went
out for his minimum five laps in
what we would now call the
"closed wheel" practice session.
Then he thought it was time for me
to turn my first wheel on a race
track, and sent me out (top right).
After a few laps I began to get
comfortable with the car, and this
was when I learned about "speed

Driver's School. If you can make
out the small print on my licence, When my Dad was teaching me to
drive, he made me learn about
using my mirrors. One of his
methods was to suddenly block the
interior rear-view mirror while I
was driving, and make me describe
what was behind me and where.
Using my mirrors was thus a
subconscious driving habit even
before I started racing, so I was
confident that I would at least be
able to stay out of the way of faster
cars. Which, for the first few laps I
did. And then ...
Coming out of the last turn on to
the back straight, I knew there was
a Lotus 11 gaining on me, and that
he would pass me about half way
down the straight. At that point I
checked my mirrors, and there he
was, right on schedule. I also saw
another faster car exiting the last
corner on to the straight, but didn't
think much of it, as I knew he
would also pass me in a little while.
BUT, a few seconds later, AND I
DO MEAN SECONDS, there was
a deafening roar, a rush of wind, or
so it seemed to me in my little
Lotus, AND A GORY GREAT
A.C./FORD COBRA STORMED
PAST ME AT ABOUT A
GAZILLION
MILES
PER
HOUR!!!! It surprised and shook
me so much that I must have
weaved all over the track. I
promptly pulled into the pits and
told Dave "I ain't goin' out there
again while that thing's out there."
After I calmed down a bit Dave
made me go out again, and I got
used to being passed by the Cobra
at a rate of what seemed like twice
for every one of my laps. And I
became VERY MUCH aware of
"speed differential."

So after a weekend with no further
untoward events, we put the car on
the trailer (below) and headed
home. I can't find the results for
that weekend, but I think Dave got
one 1st in class. As for me, I wasn't
the fastest car in Novice, as I would
have remembered that, nor the
slowest either, as I would have
remembered that too.
I ran a second Novice race later in
'63, the Grand Valley Car Club
Sprints at Harewood on October
11th and 12th (and it DIDN'T
snow), and I did get a signature on
my licence. But again I've lost the
results and don't remember how we
did. Mike Pringle never did get his
licence, as he encountered some
money (and girl-friend) problems.
I couldn't afford to run the car by
myself, so we had to sell it the next
spring. I still have the Lotus
brochure that came with the car, an
original Club Lotus numbered car
grille badge, and the experience of
owning a Lotus.
Next, whenever I get the time, my
second Novice licence and race car,
or at least what was in the process
of becoming a race car, the '67
MGB.
3. Funny you should mention that

to cancel this year's Ted Powell
Summer Trophy Races, members of
the BoD and Executive were given
an opportunity to express their view
prior to the vote of the membership.
When my turn came, I asked the
members present to think carefully
about the ramifications of
undertaking what was then, and to
some extent still is, a risky
undertaking. As an illustration, I

outlined the disastrous experience
of The Sports Car Club - Toronto
(SCC), which was my club at the
time, in organizing the first stock
car race, a USAC event, at Mosport
in 1962. An event which seemed
less risky to SCC then than the
TPSTR does to MCO now, but
which eventually led to the demise
of the Sports Car Club.

The Ontario F1600 Championship is a
competitive,
economical,
and
enjoyable series of races designed to
challenge everyone from the budding
Professional to the seasoned
Master.The average grid size in 2002
was 18 cars and it was a F1600 only
grid.
There are 12 Rounds - contested over
the span of 5 months at Canadian
Automobile Sport Clubs sanctioned
Ontario Regional Events. Each
weekend consists of 2 races, with
exclusive practices and qualifying
sessions. This was arranged to create a
true "Double Header" and avoid
Saturday's bad luck from ruining 2
Rounds.

Formula 1200 (F1200) known as
Formula Vee (FV) in many
jurisdictions was initiated over 35
years ago to provide close, inexpensive
racing for enthusiasts. To accomplish
this, rule changes are rare (e.g. The
