Where to begin
How about a little town in Kansas called “Smallville” in the midst of a meteor shower?
Sure sounds like a good place to me and it was for creators Alfred Gough and Miles Milar.
On October 16, 2001 Smallville began a ten year run that featured 632 songs along the
way. (Yes, 632 **) Smallville had great writing, directing, production and perfectly cast
actors. (Seriously, name a better Lex Luthor than Michael Rosenbaum. You can’t because
there isn’t.) Without the aforementioned there would have been no show but I make the
argument that without the great score by Mark Snow & Lois Febre and the amazing artists
who’s music synced with the action and mood episode after episode, Smallville would not
be the worldwide hit it became and still is.
As producer of this project, I knew this was not going to be an easy task but little did I
know just how hard it would actually be. Originally envisioned as a 3 disc set, the “Limited
Edition” test release of ‘Ultimate Smallville Soundtrack” was made available on May 15,
2013. By then it had grown to 4 CD’s and featured 80 tracks. Trying to license the music
for this without a major label behind us became quite a struggle. Everyone loved the idea
but the question was ‘Would the fans buy it?” I felt confident that “YES. Yes they would.”
And here’s why...although the last new episode aired in the U.S. on May 13, 2011, this show
attracts new fans everyday through syndication and DVD/Bluray. Don’t believe me? Search
“Smallville Soundtrack” and see how many fans have made lists, blogs, youtube videos...
in my own opinion,this
collection has really been a long time coming.
When you want something done and you want it done right, you ask for assistance and/or
guidance from the best. Which brings me to the team of Daniel Pulliam and Pete Casiello
(or as I like to call them, the almighty ones.) They are the creators and moderators of The
Definitive Smallville Soundtrack {www.smallvillesoundtrack.com}. This website is the most
detailed and complete source on all the music and artists featured on the show. How
complete is it? They not only tell you the episode(s) it was in, the original air date, credits,
song title and artist but they also include screen caps of the scene in which it was used
and the exact minute of when it was played. So who else to ask for assistance to ensure
we had accurate information and the correct version of each song than the guys who put
the “DEF” in DEFINITIVE. I’d just like to say, Daniel and Pete, thank you for your support and
unbelievable contributions. The fans and
myself owe you both a debt of gratitude. You are class acts all the way.
The truth is when you’re a Smallville fan, it’s all or nothing. The casual fan is rare if not
nonexistent. The music is a vital element in the story telling and till this day, these songs
are forever linked to the show. Fans cannot hear Good Charlotte’s “Girls and Boys” and not
picture Clark Kent strutting down the streets of Metropolis juiced on Red K and robbing
ATM’s. A.F.I.’s Prelude 12/24 plays and all we see is Lex Luthor walking in slomo down the
corridor of 33.1. Tell me this, can you hear Pussycat Doll’s “Don’t Cha” and not picture Lois
Lane in the Red, White & Blue Bikini as she goes undercover in the Gentleman’s club? (In
case you don’t picture that, we have included the song (on disc 3) and a picture for you.
I know....and you’re welcome.)

Where to end
In September 2013 “The Ultimate Smallville Soundtrack” grew one last time and is now
officially a 5 disc set packed with 100 tracks. It is also available as a digital download
at www.viciouscircleltd.com. The profits generated from the sales of the Ultimate
Smallville Soundtrack benefit the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation for what should
be obvious reasons. Mr. Reeve’s involvement in the show as “Dr. Virgil Swann” and as my
big screen Superman made the choice fairly simple. The generosity of the artists and
publishers was amazing as fees were waived and genuine support for this project made
raising money for this cause a reality.
I n closing
I just wanted to say that this has really been a labor of love for many of us. When asked
why was I doing this, you know...putting this whole thing together, going days and many
nights sleep deprived and spending money I really couldn’t afford to spend, I didn’t have
an answer at first. But then one day it finally hit me. This was my way of saying goodbye
to a show and a time in my life that I will never forget. Smallville brought friends and
family together every week, no matter what for 10 years. Life may not have been so
good at times but come Smallville Night...life was good for at least one hour. To the fans
all over the world thanks for tuning in and thanks for purchasing this collection. I wish
you many flashbacks. And to my personal Smallville Crew from Kansas to Florida and
various other U.S.states throughout the years, thanks for being part of it all. Larry, Chris,
Tony, Josh, Cierra, Megan, Chrissy, Faye, Vianca, Raven, Paul and of course Patrick, Chi,
Kevin, Mike and Matt...those were some good times. As Jonathan Kent said Clark in the
final episode “Always hold on to Smallville.” That’s good advice and a good place to end.
Enjoy...

Time to do some name dropping. First of all a big thank you to the artists who’s music made us want to do
this to begin with and to their recording labels for letting us include them. Just name a few...Elektra, RCA,
American Recordings, Island, Columbia/Epic/Sony, Virgin, Atlantic, Capitol, Interscope, Warner Bros, A & M,
Quango and to the ones without a label, thanks for sending it over yourselves.
Thanks to Katie Spiegel with the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation for helping us help them do
something good. Dr. Virgil Swann would have wanted it that way. To Rick at Warner Bros. and of course
Daniel and Pete with DSS (www.smallvillesoundtrack.com), thank you, thank you, thank you. To Allie
Osterloh, thanks for the great artwork used in the ads even though we used it without asking first. You
are an amazing talent.
To everyone from the creators, writers, actors, directors and the crew who kicked ass for 10 years making
Smallville the longest running show of it’s kind in television history, you rock. Of course the guys behind
the scenes Jennifer Pyken and Madonna Wade-Reed who picked the music for the show...pure genius.
And to Aaron Giard for being so good at what he does and he does it all, my little brother a big thank you.
I owe you more than one. To the fans who bought this be sure to check out all of these artists, one by one.
You won’t be sorry. For detailed song info visit www.smallvillesoundtrack.com
