Historically, it was most influential in the 1840s and 50s, when it helped to coin
the term "cartoon" in its modern sense as a humorous illustration. It became a
British institution, but after the 1940s, when its circulation peaked, it went into a
long decline, finally closing in 1992.
It was subtitled The London Charivari in homage to Charles Philipon's earlier
French satirical humour magazine Le Charivari.

udvidede. Værket blev først og fremmest til for at give fattige landsbybørn en
forestilling om geografien. Han blev afskediget i 1814 efter at have kastreret sig

The oldest danish atlas published by a danish school teacher Holm, who himself
paid for printing and publishing the atlas. His main purpose was to give the poor
village-children an idea about geography, and it was published in more and each
time enlarged editions. The teacher was in 1814 fired after having castrated (!)
himself to avoid having more children. The atlas was being made from 1819-29.
Missing the map of the south-west part of Jutland.

kong Magnus af sine store fortjenester af landets lovgivning og Gulating, der var
det af de fire store middelalderlige norske lagting som omfattede det vestlandske
retsområde. Tingstedet var i Gulen i Ydre Sogn, syd for udmundingen af
Sognefjord. Landsloven blev vedtaget i de fire lagdømmer 1274-76. Med norrøn
og dansk parallelltekst.
Ovenstående er den første trykte udgave. Selvom loven gjaldt for hele Norge
kaldtes den "Leges Gula-thingenses" i titlen, fordi grundlaget for den trykte
udgave var Gulating-håndskriftet. Landsloven gjaldt hele middelalderen og endnu
længere. Sverige fik først sin landslov i 1350 og Danmark havde ingen gennem
hele middelalderen.
This law-code of King Magnús lagbætir (1263-1280) was composed during the
years 1271-74, and was accepted by the people of the Frostuthing 1274,
Gulathing 1275, Borgarthing and Eidsivathing 1276. Although substantially the
same for all the four districts. The law-code excludes the kristinréttr proper, but
has a brief kristindómsbálkur concerning the power of the king and the royal
succession. This code was essentially in force until the issuing of the Norwegian
law-code of Christian V. i 1687. The edition is chiefly the work of G. J. Thorkelin.
