2012 Symposium of The Danish Microbiological Society Monday, November 5th, 2012 Will be held in Copenhagen 9:00 - 18:00 at Eigtved's Pakhus Asiatisk Plads 2 G, DK-1448 Copenhagen K Denmark 2012 Symposium of the Danish Microbiological Society, Monday Nov. 5th 2012 ABOUT DMS The Danish Microbiological Society (DMS) is a professional association in the fields of human and veterinary medical microbiology, general microbiology, food microbiology, environmental microbiology, biotechnology, and virology. DMS is dedicated to the advancement of microbiology, both applied and basic, and promotes microbiological information to the public. These aims are achieved by organizing an annual symposium, workshops, conferences, and by taking part in the current microbiological debate. Furthermore, DMS supports students with grants for travelling: applications for the DKK 5000 grant can be submitted each year before April 1st and October 1st. Shouldn't you take part in the advancement of microbiology in Denmark, and become a member of DMS? As a member, you are entitled to discounts at FEMS meetings and for FEMS journals (Federation of European Microbiological Societies). ABOUT the Symposium This DMS symposium is a Danish national meeting in which all scientists working in the fields covered by the DMS have a chance to exchange ideas and catch up on the latest developments in their areas of expertise. Besides the oral and poster presentations, a technical exhibition will give scientists the possibility of getting acquainted with the newest laboratory equipment and consumables that are presented by the suppliers. Keynote address: Progress in the search for life in Antarctic subglacial Lake Ellsworth David Pearce, British Antarctic Survey Antarctic subglacial lake ecosystems have the potential to be one of the most extreme environments on Earth, with combined stresses of high pressure, low temperature, permanent darkness, low-nutrient availability and variable oxygen concentrations, where a predominant mode of nutrition is most likely to be chemoautotrophic. Since the first description of Antarctic subglacial lakes there has been growing interest in the possibility that life will exist in these unique ecosystems and that the unusual combination of selection pressures and isolation from the rest of the biosphere, could lead to novel adaptations and physiology not seen before, or indeed even to the discovery of relic populations that may have become extinct elsewhere. As a result of this growing interest, three ambitious projects aim to enter and retrieve samples from Antarctic subglacial lakes over the coming year, providing an opportunity to address some fundamental scientific questions about their microbial ecology, such as can these extreme ecosystems sustain life, and if so, in what form, where exactly and how? Although this talk will focus on current progress in the Lake Ellsworth Project (near the ice divide in the Ellsworth mountains), it will also report the first microbiological analysis of a sediment sample taken from an Antarctic subglacial lake ecosystem at the retreating margins of the Antarctic ice. 2012 Symposium of the Danish Microbiological Society, Monday Nov. 5th 2012 PROGRAM Monday, November 5 , 2012 th 8:30 9:00 Registration, poster mounting and coffee BIOFILM – TO SURFACE OR NOT TO SURFACE Chair: Per Halkjær Nielsen, University of Aalborg 9:00 Per Halkjær Nielsen, University of Aalborg: “Extracellular proteins - abundant and important constituents in flocs and biofilms” 9:30 Morten Alhede, Rigshospitalet:”Aggregates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa” 9.45 Hanne Ingmer, KU: ”Aggregates of Staphylococcus aureus” 10:15 11:00 AQUATIC MICROBIOLOGY Chair: Lasse Riemann, KU 11:00 Hans-Peter Grossart, IGB: "Life-style dependent differences are crucial for understanding diversity and function of aquatic microorganisms" 11:30 Lasse Rieman, KU: “Traitbased approaches to description of microbial communities” 11:45 Terje Berg, KU: “Mixotrophy” 12:15 14:15 Content pending 11:00 Christian Giske, Karolinska Institute: "The successful clone: Spread of carbapenemases in Gram-negative bacilli" 11:30 Niels Frimodt Møller, Hvidovre hospital: "The threat for and from the Third-World countries: ESBL in Ghana" 11:45 Diarmaid Hughes, Uppsala University: "Is there hope? Eigtved's Pakhus is the official meeting facilities for the Foreign Ministry of Denmark and was originally built in 1748-50. Since 1976 the pack house has served as a premium meeting venue on the harbor front in central Copenhagen, a few minutes' walk from Metro Station Christianshavn. POSTERS Posters are welcome from all areas of microbiology. Posters (portrait format: H:150cm W: 95cm) will be displayed all day, and presenters are asked to be present at their posters from 13:30 to 14:00. Twenty-one posters will be selected for a short platform presentation. ABSTRACTS Abstracts should be submitted through the DMS homepage www.dmselskab.dk before September 15th, 2012. All abstracts will be printed in the abstract book, which will be handed out during registration and can be downloaded from the DMS homepage. PAYMENT (and student stipends) The fee for attendance at the Symposium is DKK 600 (EUR 80). This includes lunch, coffee breaks, the reception, and membership of DMS for all of 2013. Please see details for payment on the homepage. Fifty stipends are available for Master's students who present a poster and are student members of DMS. This gives free access to the symposium including the lunch, coffee, and the reception. The application for stipends can be found at www.dmselskab.dk and should be submitted by September 15th, 2012.
