SINCE
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BY JOHN
EWING
O
k, that’s great. No issues out there!
No one has brought any issues
to me yet, but the offer is still
open. [Check back to last month’s
message if this doesn’t ring a bell for you].
My contact info is still [email protected],
to raise any topic for consideration/
discussion.
For those of you who get to the general
meetings you’ll have noticed that Wayne
Pruden has chaired the meetings for me. Thanks Wayne! Much
appreciated! I did get some quality time in at the Show and
Shine on the 12th though. Great job lead by Paul Horch and his
merry band of helpers. Sorry Wolf couldn’t get out, and what I
heard of his knee, I’m sure he would rather have been out on
the parking lot. Everyone sends their best wishes out to Wolf
for a quick recovery and rehab.
The deadline for the KCT sign up has past (end of June).
Check with Denis if you find at the last minute you can get
freed up and how you can participate. Don’t you wish you had
signed up early now?
Well, I of all people know how tough it can be to string a few
days together to enjoy old car stuff. If the KCT can’t work for
you, there are several more events for this special 50th year to
participate in. The turnouts have been exceptional this year.
Let’s keep up the participation levels in to next year too.
To some of our newer members, the real pay off in
membership is through participation in events. An even better
way to expand your circle of friends is to take a job on. The
social chair position is available, and the Side Mount (SMR)
editor position will also be open next year. The SMR position
can be split in to two functions, one the assembler of the info
(we have a publisher who does the layout), and a sorter and
mailer (who stuffs the envelopes and takes to the PO). I continue
to maintain the email lists and send out the e version of the
SMR link and notices, so the SMR can be quite manageable.
Consider what you can do for the club now, so we are ready for
the coming year. How? Send me an email. I’ll find you a job.
NEXT GENERAL MEETING • Thursday, July 08 @ 7:00 p.m • Headingley Community Centre at 5353 Portage Ave.

NOTES
BY
BRYNE MCKAY
Whoooops! On the front of the June
Side Mount Reporter I goofed. I
stated the Cadillac on the front cover
was Dean Weiten’s 1957 Sixty Special. In fact, it is past-president
Robyn McCombe’s 1954 Coupe de Ville. The good news is
‘only two people reported the error to me’. My apologies to the
McCombes & the Weitens.

Marilynn Schultz sent me an email about a fellow who bought
a Wal-Mart and filled it with his 40 year collection of muscle
cars and older antique cars. Google ‘youtube Rick Treworgy’s
Muscle Car City Museum’. Rick Penko forwarded a video on
the workings of the entabulator transmission. Haven’t heard of
it? Google ‘youtube entabulator transmission’ to get a detailed
explanation on how it works…… I think.

Here I am with my ‘New Best Friend’ Dennis Gage from ‘My
Classic Car’ TV show. The turnout was a normal Sunday which
was good considering the weekend weather was poor. It would
have been huge with Dennis there on a hot night. The bike is a
1942 Harley Davidson, WW2 Canadian Army issue. It was
shipped to Europe in 1942 and made its way back to Canada
via Saskatchewan then Manitoba. It was a father/ son project,
with my son Cory and I, some 8 years ago. Dennis Gage talked
to me for over 20 minutes and the guy is a real genuine nice
guy. He really knows his old motorcycles. -Ross Metcalfe
Here is a photo of Georgina and our 1970 Chevelle El Camino
to be used in club cars photos. Also we bought a 1982 Cadillac
Eldorado yesterday to replace the one we lost to fire in California
this January 24th, 2010. That photo can be used as well for
club member’s cars. When we get bit by this addiction of loving
old cars it gets real bad. Our names are OK with the photos as
well. - Steve Branch
(Editor comment: Steve and Georgina joined the club recently
and I believe bought the Eldo at the swap meet.)

With an early spring and warm weather the return
of Howell’s Hoedown was a resounding success.
The Club had not been to the Howell’s for a
number of years and it was a very pleasant time
to have the long time members and newer
members take in the afternoon of relaxation, good
food and entertainment.
The day started in mid afternoon with visiting
and getting re-acquainted with each other and
waiting in anticipation for dinner which was
supplied by Danny’s Whole Hog. Most members
arrived with their Club cars which made for a very
nice display of vehicles for members to look at,
some of which we haven’t seen for some time.
In addition to the many Club cars, Wayne has his
own interesting display of old and new vehicles for members to
see.
In anticipation of dinner, Danny’s arrived right on time and
with plenty of tasty food for all of us to enjoy. Pig roasts can be
done in a number of ways. For this event the Club contracted to
Danny’s to supply everything except the beverage which meant
Danny’s cooked the pig at their facility and brought it hot with all
the side dishes and carved it on site. Food was set up on long
tables and served by club members Pam Lambert, Gloria
Rahaluk, Eleanor Brunette, and Shirley Murray. After dinner
birthday cake was served while Robyn McCombe entertained
us on his bagpipes.
A big thank you goes out to Wayne and
Heather Howell for allowing the Club to use their
home, to the Swap Meet Organizing Committee
that organized the event, to Danny’s Whole Hog
for the great food for which there were many
good comments, to the Club ladies who helped
with the serving, to Robyn our talented piper
who supplied the live music which was really
entertaining, and to all the Club members that
came out and hopefully had an enjoyable
afternoon.
(Editor’s comment: For this event I received two
reports. Here is Paul Horch’s take on the day’s
activities.)
Saturday May 15, a large group of MCAAC
Vol. 51 Issue #07 July 2010 — Sidemount Reporter 4
members met at Sobey’s North Main store. From there we
headed out Main Street to Lower Fort Garry from which point we
headed West toward Stonewall. The trip was largely un-eventful
with only a minor electrical glitch from Norm and Lil Sparks’ 1931
Packard. That was rectified quickly and we arrived at Wayne
and Heather Howell’s right about 3 pm. Upon arrival we saw
many more OLD cars whose owners had driven directly to
Howell’s. We toured Wayne’s garages and drooled at some of
his fine performance cars and my favorite his old green Dodge.
After visiting for a brief time the feast arrived. Thanks to Danny’s
Whole Hog we dined royally on roast pork, baked beans and
several different kinds of salads. The food was
great. Following dinner we were treated to a few
selections on the bagpipes by Robyn McCombe.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the club we
had a choice of 2 kinds of cake. A bit more visiting
and most of us returned home, well fed and happy
that the weather was so perfect for the whole day.
After all, we needed to get some rest for the Swap
Meet the next day. Many thanks to the Howell’s
for hosting the event, and for Mort and Gord for
arranging things.

RICHARD DUBOWSKI – NEW MEMBER
SUBMITTED BY
RICHARD DUBOWSKI
Well, I have been into classics, since I was 16, 48 now. I own 21964 Impala SS’s, a 1955 Chev Sedan Delivery, 3- 1955 4dr
parts cars, a 1964 GMC van & a 1970 Monte Carlo (parts car).
Marie & Ken Shaw leaving the Kingswood
Have had them all, for over 25 years. I haven’t had the good 64
Club House with one of the many
SS on the road, for quite a few years. The ‘55 Delivery (retirement
prizes handed out.
project) and the 64 are sitting in my backyard.
Just got a computer last summer and have been looking for
the right classic, since then. About 3 weeks ago, I bought a
beautiful 1951 Chev 2dr hardtop on E-Bay - what a beauty. Weird,
this car was meant for me. Nice, it is out of Nebraska, through
Kansas. Unfortunately, they damaged the roof, dropping it off in
Fargo. It was very sad seeing that damaged roof.
This is one solid 51 Chev! Just got it early, last week, and
drove it to the Body Shop. I met Randy a body man from Oakbank
Autobody at the last Red River Ex Swap Meet. He hammered out
the roof and did an excellent job – Magic.
Probably won’t have it on the road for about another week or
two. The few times I’ve seen the 51 since I owned it, the first
words out of my mouth are “What a Beauty.” It’s sad the guy
who restored it only put on a couple of hundred miles going to
car shows and then passed away.
Vol. 51 Issue #07 July 2010 — Sidemount Reporter 6
Looking forward to meeting up with the members. Especially,
the old timers (knowledge). The guy I bought the car through, in
Kansas was 62 (knowledge). Nice guy! Again, what a beauty
the 51 is. Also looking forward to Saturday morning to help pick
litter if it doesn’t rain. I guess I’m a member now. Kinda felt
guilty only paying half price for membership (signed up at last
Swap Meet).
PS – Crazy part is, the car has the look, like a rich 80 year old
man should be driving it, 1940 hat, suit & briefcase. It has that
look.

13 ANNUAL RED RIVER
VALLEY SWAP MEET
TH
WORDS BY
GORD BRUNETTE
RAY SMITH AND OTTO SO
PHOTOS BY
Well, another annual swap meet has come and gone and by
far was the most successful of all the meets that we have ever
done. Weather was a bit cloudy in the morning but the sun
soon came out and with a very light breeze, made it very
pleasant for parts shopping. Arriving at the Red River Ex site
before 6:00 in the morning there was already a line of vendors
starting to form. By 7:00 the line at times, had extended almost
to Portage Avenue, but by 9:30 most had been registered and
set up for the day.
Long before the official opening, buyers were starting to
arrive to get that
elusive part they
have
been
looking for or to
find the best
deals. By mid
morning there
were hundreds
of shoppers
looking over the
large array of
cars and parts and perusing the row upon row of show and
shine vehicles.
Bryne McKay spent the day selling Club merchandise while
El Hay was trying to sign
up new members and
Dean Weiten was trying
to explain the virtues of
the Club Bus. Also a
thank you to Roberta
Beach for her time and
effort in face painting for
the kids that attended.
Of course to make this all happen volunteers are required
and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following:
The Organizing Committee of Mort McKechnie, Gary
Lambert, Bill Rahaluk, Doug Feldman, Charlie Steeple, and
Norm Magnusson.
In addition the following club members put in a hard days
work keeping everything in order: Al Holmberg, Don Robertson,
Shaun Feldman, Pam Lambert, Chuck Ingram, Jim Drummond,
Harry and Cecilia Mortimer, Ken Morris, Bill Kuz, Bob Stevenson,
and Eleanor Brunette for organizing the Winnipeg Harvest.
Hopefully I have not missed anyone.
Also I must thank the staff of the Exhibition Park for there
assistance in getting the site ready and being available through
out the day. Exhibition Park has worked very well for this event
over the last 13 years and I’m sure it will continue into the future.

MCAAC SHOW & SHINE
SUBMITTED BY PAUL HORCH
Our 3rd annual Show and Shine was held on Saturday June
12, 2010 at the Headingley Community Centre and Jim’s
Garages. The day started out grey and dreary with a fine
“Manitoba Mist” in the air. In other words, just another soggy
day in this unending cycle of rain that we have been enduring
this year. I got to Headingley just before 9 AM after a wet ride
down Portage Avenue. At that point I wasn’t sure that a car
show was even going to happen, or if anyone else would be
willing to bring out their treasured car in such ugly weather.
Well, I didn’t have to wait long before Bryne McKay showed up
carrying all the Club Merchandise, tables, etc in his SUV. I forgive
you for not bringing an old car this time. Next to show up was
George Pike in his monstrous 1964 Olds Ninety Eight
convertible. Soon, the lot was starting to fill with cars and the
rain sort of held it’s breath for most of the day. The total number
of registered cars according to filled out forms, was 37. We
had a really nice ’56 Ford from British Columbia, a really cute
1938 1/2 ton Ford from Flin Flon, and a really nice ’57 Chev Bel
Air from The Pas. As I looked over all the registrations I saw
that many cars came from areas surrounding Winnipeg, such
as Anola, Ile Des Chenes, Lac Du Bonnet, Lockport, Dufresne,
and a couple of vehicles from Portage La Prairie. One of our
members even drove a newer Lumina all the way from the St
Vital area......yes, that was a shot.
We spent time visiting and enjoying the great variety of cars
and trucks which showed up. The prize winners were: Marilyn
and Ray Smith and their gigantic 1975 Imperial LeBaron for
Best Mopar, Rick and Natalie Kotak of Winnipeg with their
beautiful never before shown 1965 Nova for Best GM, Doug
McRae won Best Ford with his black 1956 Monarch. Best
Antique was won by club member Jim Van Welter for his 1938
Ford 1/2 ton, and best imported car was won by Ross Metcalfe
for his “saintly” 1963 Volvo P1800 sports coupe. Last but not
least, the award for the Best Truck was won by George Smith
of Portage La Prairie for his sweet little 1929 Ford Model A truck.
Prizes will be handed to the lucky winners as soon as we receive
them.
I’d like to thank all those who helped at the show. As most of
us know, Wolf just had knee replacement surgery and couldn’t
be there, but thanks to him for his advance work setting things
up and getting the show organized. I’d also like to thank
George Pike who stepped up and did the registration
and instructed people where to park. Also thanks again
to George Pike, Ken Shaw, Harry Mortimer, Wayne
Pruden, Al Holmberg and John Ewing for assisting in
picking out the cars for “best of” category. Finally,
thanks to all who showed up on a not so nice day
and for the carload of food which was donated for
Winnipeg Harvest. It was a great show. Let’s hope
for good weather next year and an even greater
turnout.

THE
PAST – CORN ROAST
MAVINS
(Editor’s comment; This article was copied from the September
1995 Side Mount Reporter. Remember, this year’s Corn Roast
will be our 40th and the date is August 22nd.)
A big thank you to all the members - past and present - who
have participated each year and have made this long lasting
event such an ongoing success. Especially Richard and his
corn!!! It wasn’t until I did the research for this article that I
realized that this was the 25th year for this event. I suspect that
the corn roast is the longest running activity other than our
meetings and annual banquets.
The corn roast was originated by Richard (Dick) Smith in
1965 (30 years ago). Considering that one of his hobbies was
and still is growing acres of corn, it was most logical that he
would suggest such a fine idea!
The first corn roast was held on Saturday, Sept. 4, 1965 at
the Smith’s Corn Farm & Auto Graveyard in St. Vital. It was
supposed to start with a tour from the Parliament Buildings at 7
pm. However, rain and wind intervened and only 4 stalwarts
showed up - Jim Bailey (50 Rover), Ted Sipkema (36 Chev),
Bob Rostecki (52 Chrysler) and Doug Sparkes in a 53 MGTD.
Shortly after this group arrived at the farm, others such as the
Shaw’s, Mavins, McGuigan’s, Ducharme’s to name a few arrived
in Modern iron. In spite of the weather, it was a thoroughly
enjoyable evening filled with corn, hot dogs, laughter and good
fun. So much so that the party continued until after 2 am. The
corn was provided by Dick Smith and this has become a
MAAC
GENERAL MEETING SUMMARY
MAY 26 , 2010
TH
• MCAAC Swap Meet very large and successful.
• MSRA Rondex Rodarama was very successful, with over $15,000
going to charity
Treasurer Report: Bev Dyck reported the funds to be $27,734.39.
Safety/Legislation: Gord Forman
• Several club members complained of police inspections being too
vindictive and vehicles being faulted for items not required by the HTA.
Gord cruised Portage Avenue and Main St from Perimeter to perimeter
on two successive Sunday nights but could not find any inspection
stations. The spokesperson for WPS will be contacted about this matter.
• MCCAC June show will be “Tin for the Bin”.
• Cruisin Downtown will be August 7th. (cruzindowntown.com)
MAAC UPDATES:
• Bill 15 was passed into legislation. The definition of the vehicles
exempt from this act by the hobbiest was submitted last year.
• Winnipeg Police conducted Sunday evening inspections and came
down hard on any violations. Bob and Gord will be contacting the WPS
Spokesperson about this matter.
N.A.A.C.C. UPDATES:
• NAACC will introduce a “Safety Inspection” program by summer.
The program was designed to help NAACC member clubs conduct
safety lane inspections at their events. The guideline manual and stickers
will be supplied free of charge. This makes it easy for small clubs to get
the supplies/forms and decals needed, along with instructions for
conducting. NAACC believes the goodwill factor of a classic or specialty
vehicle with a “Safety Inspected - PASSED” sticker in the window will be
tradition that we have carried on to this day.
Smith’s also hosted the 1966 corn roast but 1967 had to be
canceled because the frost got to the corn before we did. Word
was getting around that Richard’s corn was scrumptious, (it
still is!) so from 1968 to 1971 the corn roast was held at the
Vermette Community Club in order to accommodate the
crowds. We also added some music and had a dance. 1968
saw the debut of the club’s official Hill Billy Band but that is
another story for another time. For various reasons, there were
no corn roasts from 1972 to 1976.
In 1974, Yvonne and I moved our family to Anola where we
built our new home with the help of many of the club members.
By 1977 we felt sufficiently settled to think about our cars again.
So I contacted Richard and asked if he would mind if we held
the corn roast and would he supply the corn? He agreed and
the rest is history. It has been held at our place 17 of the last 19
years. The exceptions being 1986 and 87. In 1986, I was working
in New Zealand and Gerry and Jean Holm stepped in and took
over for us. In 1987 I retired and we took a trip to England. That
year it was held at Roger Descoteaux’s home south of St.
Norbert.
As I still have all the records from the years it was held here
I did a few calculations. Since 1977, we have had an average
of 95 people with a high of 140 in 1990 and a low of 60 in 1992.
In 1995 we were right on with 80 adults and 15 children. Our
corn consumption has run from 30 doz. to 12 doz. with the
average being 20 doz. The date is always the last Sunday in
August. So you won’t miss it, mark your calendar for 1996 NOW!
Once again, thanks to all who made it out again this year. It
is this unflagging support that keeps us going each year.
And now you know the rest of the story!!!
beneficial to the hobby. Estimated time of this going into effect may be
July of this year. This creates hardships presently with racers and tracks.
• NAACC is promoting a “Heritage Month” across Canada. The month
will be July. All clubs with events in July should report them to
[email protected] to track the action across Canada. A
submission will be made to get the federal parliament to pass an act
proclaiming July “National Automotive Heritage Month”.

When cruising the local Cadillac dealer I spotted something that
I thought had gone extinct almost 40 years ago….. Fins! The
2010 Cadillac SRX is sporting fins in the form of taillights.
Remember it was Cadillac that stated the craze back in the 1940s.
Here we go again?

IN MEMORIAM
DR. ERWIN PENNER
SUBMITTED BY
OTTO SO (PAST
PRESIDENT
2005)
Sadly, Dr. Ewing Penner, our long time member and the 16th
president of MCAAC passed away on June 2, 2010.
Aside from his successful profession as a physician, Dr. Penner
was also an antique automotive restorer. His interest influenced
his wife who later became an upholstery specialist.
Dr. Penner was an active club member. He attended many of
the club functions and hosted many MCAAC Fall Foliage Tours
at his farm property for our members. I had the opportunity to
attend his last Foliage Tour (2004) after I joined the club in late
2003.
Dr. Penner is a true collector of antique transportation equipment
from snow buggy, Ford Model A, to a fleet of NASH cars and
many others.
Quoted from the Winnpeg Free Press Obituary:
A Physicians Prayer:
Dear Lord, Please give skill to my hands, clear vision to my
mind, kindness and sympathy to my heart. Give me singleness
of purpose, strength to lift at least a part of the burden of my
suffering fellowmen and true realization of the privilege that is
mine.
Forever missed.
