Frequently asked questions
Q. Do we have to start our vacation on a certain day?
A.You may start your vacation any day. A week is seven nights and there
is a three-night minimum.
Q. How much fuel will we use during a trip?
A.Five to 25 gallons per day are average. Usage will vary widely based
on the size of your boat and how much cruising you do. Typically,
your boat will not need refueling during a week’s time, but if it does,
our hospitality service will deliver fuel. Fuel may also be purchased at
various points throughout the park.
Q. What is the hospitality service?
A.We provide deliveries daily to our guests. Call the lodge the evening
before your delivery is required or by 10 a.m. Provide a list of items
needed, such as gas, ice, pop or food. The delivery boat will be at
your houseboat that afternoon or evening. There is a small, one-time fee
for this service.
Q.Do we need any special navigation skills or a license to
operate a Voyagaire Houseboat?
A.A complete set of fully marked charts and an information booklet are
aboard each boat. There is a chain of color-coded and numbered
buoys running from one end of Voyageurs National Park to the other.
Each is reflected on your map. Even first-time houseboaters will find this
system easy to follow.
Q. Are pets allowed?
A. Yes. We accept pets in the lodge and on all houseboats, except the
Voyagaire 550 for a non-refundable charge of $10 per night in the
lodge or $50 per trip on the houseboats. Pet owners are responsible for
cleaning up after their dog and must keep their dog on a leash while at
base.
Q. Do we need a fishing boat?
A. A fishing boat and motor are required with each charter. You may bring
your own or rent one. Multiple boats, larger boats, runabouts, bass boats
and pontoons are easily towed behind the houseboat with a tow bar
supplied.
Q. Are there generators?
A. The Hot Tub and Deluxe Sportcruisers, Suncruisers, Sunseekers and
Voyagaires are equipped with a primary marine generator that
produces a noise within the houseboat similar to a refrigerator. These
generators operate all the onboard appliances, TV/VCR and air
conditioner, plus any small appliances you bring from home. For
other houseboats, a small generator may be rented to operate power
appliances you bring from home.
Q. How are emergencies handled?
A. The radio in your houseboat or your personal cell phone (where service
is available) may be used to communicate with base. In the case of a
medical emergency on your boat, we will respond with our service boat
or 911 out of Crane Lake. In some cases, the Voyageurs National Park
Rangers may respond. If your houseboat needs servicing while on the
water, a service boat will be sent out immediately. If you are using the
hospitality service, we will know your location at all times.
Q. Where do we get bait and a MN fishing license?
A.You can secure both at a local bait shop.
Q. Do we need a Canadian fishing license?
A. Only to fish in Ontario. Most of the lakes you will be cruising and all of
the Voyageurs National Park waters are within the Minnesota boundary.

Rules and regulations
RULES & REGULATIONS - Read these carefully to know what to
bring, what is provided, and what to expect on your vacation. The
staff at Voyagaire Lodge & Houseboats would like to make your trip as
pleasant and memorable as possible.
PREPLANNING - With your reservation confirmation, you will receive
a detailed list of what you should bring with you and what is supplied
with your houseboat.
DEPARTURE AND RETURN - A three-day minimum rental is required
for a reservation. Boarding time is between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. and
return time is between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m on your final day. If you are
returning the houseboat prior to your scheduled departure date, it must be
back in port by 4 p.m.
DEPOSITS - A deposit is required to secure a reservation. Deposits/
payments are non-refundable.
TRANSPORTATION - Voyagaire Lodge & Houseboats will provide
transportation from International Falls, Hibbing and Orr airports for an
additional fee. Please notify us at the time of deposit.
VOYAGEURS NATIONAL PARK PERMITS - We will provide
overnight permits for your houseboat. In 2016, these permits are free and
require no advance reservations. Rules may change in 2017.
MOORING AT NIGHT - Houseboats are required to be beached
overnight. Voyageurs National Park has a multitude of well-spaced,
secluded beaches to secure your houseboat for the night — they are
marked on your navigational charts. All houseboats are equipped with
mooring lines, and beaching procedures are part of your check-out
instructions before leaving the dock.
BOATS, MOTORS AND GUIDES - A fishing boat and motor are
required with each houseboat. You may either bring your own boat
and/or motor or rent them at the lodge. We are a Yamaha dealer
and all of our outboards are replaced with new 4 stroke motors every
year and are maintained by our well-trained staff of mechanics. Fishing,
hunting, and tour guides are independent contractors and are hired
directly by you. Voyagaire Lodge & Houseboats will be happy to make
arrangements for you. Please call ahead of time so one will be available
to meet your needs.
RESPONSIBILITIES -You are responsible for any service, damage or
loss of equipment other than mechanical problems. You will be required
to sign a bare-boat charter. The boat will be checked prior to departure
and upon return.
PAYMENT - Payment is due 90 days prior to arrival. Gas tanks are
filled prior to departure and refilled on your return. You only pay for the
gas you use. Payment can be made by bank cashier’s check, personal
check, travelers checks, cash, or credit card.
