About a year ago I saw a listing
in our Temple Bulletin for Mitzvah
opportunities and one listing in
particular caught my eye. The information indicated a need for workers
to help build houses with Habitat for
Humanity in Newark. I was put in
touch with Barbara Laub and the next
thing I knew I was learning how to
put up sheetrock.
While hammering away I got to
talk with Jim Tierney, the executive
director of the Newark chapter of
Habitat for Humanity. We discussed
the needs of the program, especially
for volunteers, and how the Preschool
could be of help. He suggested that I
speak to someone in the "Women
Build" branch of the program and was
willing to connect me to those in
charge.
The day after the "build, n I
attended a monthly preschool
director's meeting and brought this
information to 20 other synagoguebased preschool directors in the
Metrowest area. After I had suggested
that they might want to get involved
in this endeavor, another director
piped up that "Women Build"was her
mitzvah project for her adult bat
mitzvah. She invited me to their
planning meeting that same evening.
With an extra hour and nothing
to do that night, and once again not
bothering to ask, 'What's involved?' I
attended the meeting, ready to
volunteer my weekend and holiday
time to power tools. Little did I know
that the meeting agenda revolved
around the fund raising aspect of the
'build:To make a long story short,
$80,000 was needed to break ground
on the first "Women Build" home in
Newark. Fundraisers were held and
after many set-backs and permit
snafus, we laid the first floor decking
in the middle of June.
Through my involvement with
this program, some of the preschool
classes started collecting tzedakah
money for Habitat. This became a very
concrete way for the children to
understand that the coins they placed
in the little cardboard houses provided by Habitat would go towards
helping to build a real house. A
representative of Women Build sent
the children a thank you note, a
photograph of the mother and child
whose home we are helping to build
and an invitation to come to see the
building site. While the children are
not allowed on the worksite, they will
be able to help the workers by
making lunch and bringing drinks
and snacks to share.
I look back on the last year in
amazement that from one tiny
sentence or two in our Temple
Bulletin, I have been able to find
something that not only allows me
the opportunity to give back to the
community in a way with which I'm
comfortable, but also to have the
potential to get many other people
involved.

August is full of summer fun days for most of us. It is
important to drink water to keep your body hydrated and
avoid getting overheated as well as protecting your skin
from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Wear a hat and use
sunscreen lotion with a minimum of SPF of 15 and SPF 30
for sensit ive skin. It is also important to reapply sunscreen
protection regularly every couple of hours throughout
the day especia lly after swimming. It on ly takes a short
wh ile on a bright sunny summer day for your skin to be
damaged.
So where is the fun?? There are many wonderful
commun ity resources open and runn ing over the summer
months. The Margulies Center at the JCC (telephone: 973736-3200) has programs and trips scheduled. One could
take a swim in the pool, take a class, play bridge and enj oy
lunch and a speaker, or go on a trip. There is even transportation available.
Perhaps enjoying a week or two vacation is what
the doctor ordered th is summer. Meet new people or
bring a friend or loved one to the Kislak Center Camp
(telephone: 570-798-2551) where seniors can have a
comfortable camp experience in a beautiful mountain
setting. It is where delicious meals, varied levels of
activities, entertainment, music, d iscussions, socials and
fun are all senior oriented and enjoyed.
Maybe it is too hot outside or you are just not able
to get out. Connect with others by telephone to discuss
poetry, art, history, health and well ness and many other
interests and opinions. Connect with DOROT, the University Without Walls, (telephone: 973-763-1 SS 1) in the
comfort of your own home. One can even learn new
gentle exercises over the phone to improve your strength,
endurance and energy. These are j ust a few of the opportunities through the summer and throughout the year
that are available. Just make the connection.
Speaking of connections, if summertime is more laid
back, less busy and less stressful than during the year . . .it
may present a great opportunity to give back to the
community by volunteering some time to visit someone
who is lonely or isolated or is just not feeling welL It is the
human contact that is important and a short visit over
some cold iced tea or refreshing lemonade may help
bring a little perspective and enjoyment to life - for you
and for the person you are visiting.
If you would like to connect with me over the
summer, please call my office message machine at 973736-3200 extention 372. Please leave your name and a
telephone number where you can be reached and I will
call you back.

Nothing living should ever be treated with
contempt. Whatever it is that lives, a man, a tree,
or a bird, should be touched gently .. . Civilization is another word for respect for life.
- Elizabeth Goudge (1900-1984)
This month I'm focusing on two important types of
Mitzvot-helping someone with a medical need and
helping the earth in a local way. I hope that by the time
you read this, the first Mitzvah will already have happened,
but just in case ...
It's About A Special Person
Sue Turk. co-founder of The Mitzvah Clowns, needs
your help in finding a kidney donor. Sue (a/k/a Sweetpea)
and her husband Mike have been clowning for people in
need- seniors, children with cancer, the homeless-for
over 20 years.
Sue has a special affinity for kids in treatment, since
she has been an insulin dependent diabetic for almost 40
years and understands the demands of a regimen of
medication and needles. Unfortunately, her long battle
with diabetes has resulted in the need for her to go on
dialysis and hope for a kidney transplant. Sue is blood type
o and can only receive a kidney from another o.
It is our hope that a volunteer will come forward to
donate a kidney for this woman who has given so much of
herself. If you, or someone you know, are blood type 0 and
would like to provide this gift to Sue, please contact Marcia
Krupit, Social Worker for Transplants at St. Barnabas
Hospital, at 973-322-8461 . Please spread the news to
anyone you might know who can help.

New and Neat:
How Much Do You Care About Recycling?
Put your bucket where your caring is! Jen Larson of
the TSTI Green Team is starting a mini-movement. Because
Maplewood is no longer recycling plastics, Jen is looking
to create a buddy system between people who want to
recycle and people who will help them. We're calling it the
Plastics Partnership. If you live in a nearby town and are
willing to have someone drop off their plastics to be
picked up along with your recycling items, or if you're
looking for a drop-off place, please let Jen know at
[email protected] or 973-762-6636 and she'll match you
with someone. It's so simple!
South Orange GreenwaylRlverwalk
(Thanks to Robb Kushner for this information)
How would you like to stroll or bike on a beautiful
path through our parkland and along our segment of the
Rahway River all the way from South Orange into
Maplewood? Greenways are being designed and built all
across the country to connect parkland areas and afford an
enjoyable way for people to get out, get some exercise,
explore and enjoy our natural green spaces. Now South
Orange has initiated a greenway project of its own.
The Greenway Partnership, Inc. is working with the
South Orange Dept. of Recreation and Cultural Affairs to
create a pathway that will form a key element of our
recently adopted Recreation Master Plan. The Master Plan
will incorporate 85 acres devoted to the arts, environment,
and sports communities (in other words, all of us!).
Many people don't realize that the river that flows
through Meadowland Park also runs through the business
district of South Orange and connects with the New
Waterlands athletic fields and the Old Waterlands Field. A
little farther along, it runs through the center of
Maplewood Memorial Park. By building the greenw;y
along the river corridor, all of these spots will be linked
together. In addition (for you commuters out there), the
path will connect Mountain Station and South Orange
Station.
This is a project driven by a wonderful vision to help
us enjoy our parklands. lf you would like to know more
about the Greenway Partnership, please contact TSTI
member Jonathan Felsman, who is a driving force in this
effort. Jonathan can be reached at [email protected]
or 973-763-1688.
Mazel Tov To Our Bar Mitzvah
Max Elijah Okinow, son of Alison Klein and Stephen Okinow, will become a Bar
Mitzvah on Saturday, August 28. Sharing the celebration are his brother and sister, Jake
and Samantha, and grandparents, Marilyn Klein, Sandra Okinow, and Susan and Martin
Klein. Max will enter seventh grade at Millburn Middle School where his favorite subject
is science. He is a soccer, skiing and snowboarding enthusiast in his spare time. Max
volunteered at a program for autistic teens and adults at the JCC for his "Mitzvah
Project."
"Becoming a Bar Mitzvah means taking more responsibility for my actions. I have gained
a better understanding of my religion," says Max.

It has become a TSTI tradition for the
Confirmation Class to donate money to a
charity as a class gift. The 2004 Confirmation Class had a very successful and
innovative balloon fundraiser, raising
$700 which was donated to the
Lighthouse Soup Kitchen in Newark.
Balloons, each representing donated
goods or services, were sold on the
carpool line.
About 70 goods and services were
collected. The fundraiser was so
successful that, unfortunately, all
balloons were sold during the early
session carpool. (Sorry to the late
session carpool, who missed-out!) Many
thanks to Temple members for their
generous support. We would also like to
acknowledge the merchants making
donations, and hope that you will
patronize them:
