Participation in vessel traffic services
Vessels with an overall length of 24 metres or more are obliged to participate in the vessel traffic services by
reporting to Bothnia VTS, by listening to VHF channel 67 and by observing the provisions concerning traffic in
the VTS area.
The master must notify the VTS authority of the following events taking place in the VTS area or its vicinity:
any incidents or accidents affecting the vessel’s safety
any incidents or accidents endangering the safety of navigation
any circumstances that may cause pollution of waters or the coast
any pollutant spills and containers or packages drifting in the sea
The operational hours of Bothnia VTS are 24 hours/day all year round.
2 VTS area
Bothnia VTS covers the area between Kristinestad and Tornio.
The area consists of four VTS sectors, which cover all shipping lanes that require pilot assistance, excluding the
channels to the ports of Munsala and Kalajoki.
The traffic along the shipping lanes to the ports of Munsala and Kalajoki is monitored with the AIS system.
These channels are not included in the VTS sector since the movements of the vessels cannot be monitored by
radar and the VHF reception is restricted, especially in the inner parts of the channels.
2.1 VTS Sector A
Covers the shipping lanes to the ports of Kristinestad and Kaskinen, excluding the harbour areas.
Coordinates of the sector’s base points:
1) 62 15.0´N 021 19.8´E
2) 61 59.0´N 020 49.0´E
3) 62 16.0´N 020 42.0´E
4) 62 21.8´N 021 13.2´E
The limit of the VTS sector between coordinates 2) and 3) coincides with the seaward limit of the territorial sea.
2.2 VTS Sector B
Covers the shipping lanes to the port of Vaasa and the southern part of the Quark, excluding the harbour areas.
Coordinates of the sector’s base points:
1) 63 04.9´ N 021 32.8´E
2) 63 00.0´ N 020 16.0´E
3) 63 22.0´ N 020 28.0´E
4) 63 06.6´ N 021 35.2´E
The limit of the VTS sector between coordinates 2) and 3) coincides with the seaward limit of the territorial sea.

Covers the shipping lanes to the ports of Jakobstad and Kokkola, excluding the harbour areas.
Coordinates of the sector’s base points:
1) 63 42.6´ N 022 41.5´E
2) 63 42.0´ N 021 53.0´E
3) 64 13.0´ N 022 58.0´E
4) 63 51.6´ N 023 02.7´E
The limit of the VTS sector between coordinates 2) and 3) coincides with the seaward limit of the territorial sea.
2.4 VTS Sector D
Covers the shipping lanes to the ports of Raahe, Oulu, Kemi and Tornio, excluding the harbour areas.
Coordinates of the sector’s base points:
1) 64 36.3´N 024 21.9´E
3) 65 46.7´N 024 07.9´E
2) 64 37.0´N 023 39.5´E
The limit of the VTS sector between coordinates 2) and 3) coincides with the seaward limit of the territorial sea.

Reporting procedures
The working channel of Bothnia VTS is VHF 67.
Reports should include the following information:
Name of the vessel
Name of reporting point
Destination
Intended route. If an alternative route is selected, this must be reported.
3.1
Required reports
Vessels are required to report upon entry into the VTS area.
Vessels must report before leaving port or an anchorage.
Vessels must also report after anchoring and berthing.
Vessels bound for Finnish ports in the Gulf of Bothnia via the Quark are required to submit an advance
report 20 nautical miles before the Nordvalen Lighthouse (63 32.15’N 20 46.60’E) at the time indicated in the instructions Finland's Winter Navigation.

4 Vessel traffic services provided
In the Bothnia VTS area information, navigational assistance and traffic organization services are provided as
follows:
Information services are provided in all channel sections.
Traffic organization in the channels as separation of traffic in terms of time or distance if the traffic situation so
requires.
Navigational assistance can be provided at open sea, from the open sea to the vicinity of pilot boarding places
and to outer anchorages.
The services provided by the VTS centres are described in more detail in the general description of the VTS
operations.
5 Pilotage
For enforcement referred to in the Pilotage Act, the VTS can enquire about the name of the master or the number of the Pilot Exemption Certificate/exemption. The vessel should be prepared to provide this information on
request.
5.1 Compulsory pilotage
Compulsory pilotage applies to a vessel, integrated tug/barge combination or non-rigid combination which:
carries oil, liquefied gas, noxious liquid substances or dangerous goods in solid form in bulk;
carries INF cargo; or
has a maximum length of more than 70 metres or a maximum width of more than 14 metres or a maximum authorised summer load draught in saline water of more than 4.5 metres when operating in
Finnish territorial waters and a maximum length of more than 25 metres in the Saimaa waterways or
the Saimaa Canal.
