own bedrooms.

Although they came close to qualifying
for a conventional loan, the financial
strain it would have caused made it too
risky. So they continued to struggle, living
in cramped apartments in dangerous
neighborhoods. The black mold made the
kids sick and aggravated Richie’s asthma.
When they were accepted into the program
Monica said, “We could only dream about
it before; now it will be a reality.” Monica
eagerly anticipates family gatherings;
Richie and the kids envision a home with a
basketball hoop and horse shoes.
The Escalantes are very proactive;
contributing 50+ volunteer hours already.
“We are so grateful. We want to help in
whatever way we can,” says Monica. It is a
joy to partner with the Escalantes as they
prepare to be successful homeowners.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
A BRUSH WITH KINDNESS
Winter’s chill is in full swing, but we’re not
slowing down in our commitment to serve
families needing safe, decent and affordable
housing.
In November, we completed a repair
project for Charleine, an elderly disabled
homeowner. Volunteers contributed over
65 hours to build a ramp, so that Charleine
can access her front door safely. Her fence
and back deck were also repaired; painting
will be completed in the spring.
Currently, Habitat volunteers are busy
re-modeling a home, replacing cabinets
and flooring, installing new drywall; taping
and texturing. Volunteers are painting the
interior, installing doors and trim, then
plumbing and lighting fixtures. Weather
permitting, we will paint the exterior of the
house. Once the landscaping is refurbished,
the entire house will sparkle with a whole
new look!
Want to lend a hand? Visit our website
at http://www.sehabitat.org, click on Get
Involved, then “Volunteer UP,” to sign up;
the coffee pot will be full and the welcome
mat will be out.
Charleine was thrilled with the speed and
quality work of our volunteers. A huge
thank you to volunteer project leader (and
former board
member), David
Russell, to project
sponsor Pacific
Continental
Bank, and to our
volunteers from
Levi Strauss and
PCB!

FROM THE EXECUTIVE’S CHAIR
At S/E Habitat, we are
filled with excitement
and anticipation as we celebrate our
25th Year! With your help, we look
forward to continuing our mission
and working with the community
to ensure there is safe, decent, and
affordable housing for all God’s
people.
During 2015 we will build our 52nd,
53rd, and 54th houses. A home
remodel, and 6 - 8 home repair
projects (A Brush With Kindness) are
also on the schedule. We’ll celebrate
the 5th anniversary of our ReStore,
which provides valuable revenue to
the affiliate each year.
Watch for information about
anniversary activities, groundbreaking
and dedication ceremonies, and other
festivities in our newsletters, website,
Facebook (have you Liked our page?),
and in the news. Have a favorite
Habitat story, memory or photo as
a volunteer? Have an idea for our
anniversary celebration? We want to
hear it! Send an email, give us a call,
send a note, or drop by the office.
We are blessed to celebrate this
special anniversary because of YOU
– volunteers, donors, board and
committee members, and friends
– thank you. Your dynamic energy,
support, and prayers enable us to
continue our mission.
In this New Year, let’s shout our joy
to the whole community, let’s make
sure that we do everything possible
to bring hope to our neighbors, be
faithful to our calling to end poverty
housing, and ensure that the next 25
years of Habitat’s service will lend
a hand to our partner families and
the community we serve. Join us in
celebrating the past and growing the
future!

ALTERNATIVE GIVING OPTIONS
WELCOME TO BYRON WILLIAMS!
Feeling a little weary after all the Christmas
shopping? With Valentine’s Day, Easter, and
Mother’s Day around the corner, consider making a
donation in honor of, in memory of, or in gratitude for that
special person in your life. Your gift will help a family escape
miserable living conditions and offer hope as they build a
better future with a home of their own. Simply return the
enclosed envelope or donate online at www.sehabitat.org.
We will send a note to your loved one letting them know
you have made a gift in their name.
Habitat is pleased to introduce Byron Williams, our new
full-time Site Supervisor. Born and raised in Montana,
Byron loves to fish and play golf. He graduated from The
Master’s College with a Biblical Studies Degree, then
served as a Youth Pastor for 15 years in Washington
state. He later went into residential and commercial
construction, working as the Site Supervisor for the
Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat affiliate from 2005-2007.
OREGON CHARITABLE TAX CHECK OFF
This year, doing your taxes can make a difference. Help
support Habitat for Humanity’s services for Oregonians.
Here’s how:
• When you fill out your Oregon form 40, write the code
“1” in box 66a and the amount of the donation in 66b.
• Let your tax preparer know that you would like to give via
Charitable Tax Check off.
• Spread the word. Ask your friends and family to choose
Habitat on their tax returns.
He is excited about his
new position, as he
loves Habitat, building
homes and working
with volunteers. He
will be a wonderful
asset as we strive to
be more effective in
serving families needing
a safe, decent place
to call home. Please
welcome Byron to our
Construction Team!

SAVE THE DATE!
Our 4th Annual Benefit Breakfast will be held on Tuesday, April 28, at 7:30AM, at the Hilton Hotel. We have an
extraordinary guest speaker this year that you will not want to miss! Clive Rainey joined Habitat International in 1977 as
its very first volunteer. He is the person who brought the concept of “sweat equity” to Habitat, which is a key element of
Habitat’s successful program. During his 35 years of service with Habitat, Clive travelled the world, challenging Habitat
affiliates to serve as leaders in their own communities in the effort to eliminate substandard housing.
Through his work, Clive Rainey helped to make Habitat for Humanity one of the most recognized brands in the world. It is
not his unmatched seniority or his status as Habitat’s very first volunteer that has endeared him to so
many, but his passion and his stories about the work. While many enthusiasms fade with time, Clive’s
fervor for the mission of eliminating poverty housing has only grown. So too, has his commitment to
igniting that passion in others.
Clive now lives in Guatemala, rescuing homeless children from the streets. We are extremely honored
that Clive is coming to Eugene on our behalf - don’t miss this rare opportunity to meet Clive and catch
his fever. The event is free but is by reservation only, so be sure to email [email protected] or call
the office at (541) 741-1707 soon to reserve your seat.

As we look forward to a new year, we also look back with
great appreciation for all of the wonderful individuals and
businesses in Springfield/Eugene who helped make 2014
our most successful year ever! Thanks to our wonderful
donors, volunteers and shoppers, the ReStore’s increased
sales helped build homes and serve families needing a safe, decent place to live. Our amazing volunteers are a huge part
of our success. This dedicated group worked thousands of hours to make the ReStore a fun, attractive, and efficient place
to shop. And our shoppers responded in a big way!
As a shopper at the ReStore you have a positive impact on our community by supporting recycling and generating revenue

VOLUNTEER UPDATE
ReStore Volunteer Profile: The Keetons
Nancy and Mike Keeton joke that
they keep coming back to the Habitat
ReStore because they’re always
finding more items to buy. In reality,
it’s fellow volunteers, Habitat staff,
and partner families that have kept
them involved with S/E Habitat for
over 5 years. They believe deeply in
Habitat’s mission and are long-time
donors and volunteers, in the ReStore
and on the build site.
Nancy: “We really enjoy working
with Scott and Cindy (ReStore staff).
and the volunteers are super.” They
were thrilled to work alongside
Albert Millard on his house in 2014.
Mike: “It’s fun to work with someone
who’s so appreciative and sincere.”
If you are interested in volunteering
in the ReStore, contact Cindy at (541)
344-4809 or [email protected].

HABITAT HAPPENINGS
Cause for Celebration! To help us launch S/E
Habitat’s 25th Anniversary in 2015, we set
a goal to raise $25,000 during our year-end 2014 Annual
Campaign. Thanks to our many generous donors who
responded enthusiastically, we exceeded our goal, raising
over $28,000! These funds will have an important impact
on families desperately needing decent housing. In our
special 25th year, we plan to serve families with more new
home construction and an increased number of home
repair projects. Watch for news about our Rotary Build and
Faith Build this spring!
Our first annual Poinsettia Fundraiser was a tremendous
success! By selling over 350 gorgeous holiday plants, we
raised nearly $2,300. Supporters
loved the bright color and superior
quality of these cheerful flowers
grown locally by Johnson Bros.
Greenhouses. We’ll be taking preorders next October, so mark your
calendars!
Speaking of fundraisers, Ninkasi
Brewing Co. has once again
reached out to help Habitat.
On November 20, supporters
gathered at Ninkasi’s tasting
room to raise a glass and help
raise a roof! Over $200 was
raised to help families needing
a hand up.
Thanks to the support of the Eugene Assn. of Realtors
and the Springfield Assn. of Realtors, the Oregon Assn.
of Realtors awarded two $5,000 HOME grants, totaling
$10,000. A huge thank you to our realtors!
Pacific Continental Bank surprised us by presenting a
check for $1,500 to support our 2015 Faith Build. Thanks to
these terrific organizations, we continue to build hope and
change lives.
