the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. Mäntsälä is
located at the intersection of major transport routes: nearby is
the junction of the Helsinki-Lahti motorway and Helsinki Ring
Road V, which runs from Hanko to Porvoo.
By train you can reach Helsinki in around 40 minutes and
Lahti in around 20, while the Ring Rail Line provides a fast
connection from Mäntsälä to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (39 min).

Mäntsälä has also been home to great men
and women. Former Government Minister
Elisabeth Rehn, who held high positions in
the UN, grew up here.
Historical highlights
The municipality of Mäntsälä was
founded in 1585. In Finnish history, the
municipality is known particularly for
the Mäntsälä Rebellion, which began in
Ohkola Workers’ Hall in 1932. During the
rebellion, the Lapua Movement attempted to overthrow the Finnish Government.
Mäntsälä obtained its own railway station in 2006. Rail transport is important
for the people of Mäntsälä, because many of them commute daily to work in
the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. In future, the station will feature more services
to ease the daily lives of commuters and the residents of the area. A new
grocery store, for example, will open at the station in February 2016.
REXAM – Best in Can
The history of the municipality is closely linked with the area’s many manor
houses, which in their time were home to
many prominent figures. One of them is
the discoverer of the Northeast Passage,
Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, who spent his
childhood at Alikartano Manor in Numminen. The manors also attracted many
esteemed visitors to the municipality:
Tsar Alexander I of Russia, for example,
visited Mäntsälä Manor in 1809.
New single-family homes will be built in the
coming years in the Männikkö residential
area, close to Mäntsälä Railway Station, and
in the Hyökännummi/Taruma district.
Space to live
Mäntsälä has a young population age structure and there is
net positive migration into the municipality. Mäntsälä residents
value the municipality’s ruralistic living environment, sense of
community, city-level services, wide range of leisure activities
and close proximity to the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.

In housing, too, there’s lots of choice for everyone and for every
life situation. In rural districts, the housing is mostly single-family
homes, but in the centre there is also the option of urban living
in apartment blocks close to services.

In Mäntsälä you can enjoy almost any pastime.
Choose, for example, group gymnastics, motor
sports, ice hockey, orienteering, golf or open-air
theatre. You can also relax by swimming, skiing
and hiking… or even ice-hole swimming at
Katrinranta.
For play and exercise
In Mäntsälä, there is something for people of all ages to do. The
children’s favourites are lush, well-maintained play parks, where
much fun is guaranteed by slides, sandboxes, swings and climbing frames.
Further options are offered by the central sports park, which
has a playing field, heated artificial turf, and tennis courts. Close
to the sports park are an ice rink and a community centre with
sports halls, a gymnasium and squash courts.
The Anttila local sports area offers lots of exciting activities for
the whole family. In addition to the play park, visitors are attracted by a parkour course, a skateboarding park, a jogging track
and an artificial turf games arena. In winter, the sledding hill, ice
skating rink and an illuminated ski track are very popular.
Grassy areas next to the park provide space for guided park
exercise classes and also serve as a departure area for hot air
balloons.

On the learning path
It’s good to grow up in Mäntsälä. Municipal and private day care centres and family
day care are available, including a private English-language Montessori play school
and a sports-oriented kindergarten. Mäntsälä also has nature-oriented pre-school
groups. Quality basic education is ensured by the municipality’s primary and secondary schools.
Young people can continue their studies in Mäntsälä Upper Secondary School or in
Central Uusimaa Vocational College Keuda. They can continue even further along

The old-time village milieu of
Ohkola is also scenically valuable.
Historical manor houses are an inseparable part of Mäntsälä: in the 17th
century, almost every village had its own manor. The biggest of these was
Sälinkää Manor, from which many tenant farms later separated. Many of the
farms’ names, such as Mecca, Egypt, Brazil and Bethlehem, still live on in
today’s place names.
