Rising healthcare costs continue to be a major area
of frustration and concern for our West Chester
Chamber Alliance members. Discussions run the
gambit from where to find affordable health care
coverage, to becoming more accountable by providing an employee health and wellness program,
to pondering the question of what lies ahead for
healthcare with the presidential election in November?
The following information is to help give clarity to those discussions and
more on the subject of healthcare.
Affordable Healthcare Insurance
The West Chester Chamber Alliance offers our members a group rate
benefit program with UnitedHealthcare. Our group plan allows for a
cost savings for all Chamber members. Contact Chamber member Kevin
Schlotman from CAI Insurance at 513.221.1140 to get an insurance
quote to compare to what you’re paying now.
HealthShare is a new and affordable health insurance solution for the
working uninsured in Butler County. It is a limited medical program
which provides opportunities for employers to offer affordable access to
routine, basic and preventive healthcare services for all eligible employees and their dependents. This program is unique to our area as it offers
a guarantee issue. Contact Chamber member Dominic Franchini from
HORAN at 513.794.2970 for more information. Rates are guaranteed
until September 2010.
Make Good Health Your Business
If you’re looking for ways to lower your healthcare costs and improve the
health of your employees, then you may want to consider a wellness and
prevention program that, for example: encourages childhood and adult
immunization, examines the use of daily aspirin for employees of a certain age and at increased risk for heart disease and screens employees
for tobacco use and encourages them to quit. These three have the highest impact and are the most cost effective, according to a report by the
Partnership for Prevention - a national organization located in Washington D.C. dedicated to building evidence of sound disease prevention and
health promotion policies.
Unhealthy living habits and the preventable diseases that result from them
drive up healthcare costs. It makes good business sense for organizations
as purchasers of healthcare to provide opportunities and incentives to live
healthier.
To generate employee interest in wellness, businesses are considering
reducing out-of-pocket costs for prevention services and prevention medications such as cholesterol-lowering drugs or nicotine replacement therapies. When negotiating a healthcare plan, organizations should ensure
that high-value prevention services are included with limited cost sharing.
Educating employees about available preventive services and making
those services convenient tend to boost participation. Working with
healthcare providers located near the workplace or arranging for a
temporary on-site clinic or mobile van to conduct screenings and vaccinations are ways to increase participation.

Many small businesses have discovered that they are able to implement
a wellness program at relatively low cost. Health seminars, health risk
assessments and screenings, monetary incentives for healthy living and
reimbursement for health club dues are common components of these
programs.
Presidential Candidates Outline Healthcare Agendas
In February’s Chamber Voice we provided information on the eight presidential candidates in preparation for the Ohio Primary in March. Since
then, we are down to three candidates: Republican John McCain and
Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. To continue our quest to
educate and inform, the following is an overview of the remaining three
candidate’s healthcare agendas courtesy of the US Chamber of Commerce.
JOHN McCAIN, Republican
Access to Healthcare:
• Opposes a national health insurance mandate.
• Supports allowing small businesses and the self-employed to purchase insurance through organizations or associations. Supports
healthcare tax dividends for low-income earners and the expanded
use of health savings accounts (HSAs).
• Proposes reforming the tax code to eliminate the bias toward employer
sponsored health insurance and would provide all individuals with
a $2,500 tax credit ($5,000 for families) to increase incentives to
purchase insurance. Individuals owning innovative multi-year
policies that cost less than the amount of the full tax credit could
deposit the remainder into a HSA.
HILLARY CLINTON, Democrat
• Supports an individual health insurance mandate with federal tax
credits for those who can’t afford health insurance.
• Proposes that large businesses be required to provide or help pay for
employee coverage and that small businesses with fewer than 25
employees be given a refundable tax credit to continue or begin
offering coverage.
• The $110 billion per year plan would be paid for by eliminating the
Bush tax cuts for those earning more than $250,000 a year.
BARACK OBAMA, Democrat
• Supports a national health insurance program for people who do not
have employer provided health care and who do not qualify for other
existing federal programs. Would mandate health insurance coverage
for children but not for adults.
• Would require employers that do not provide health coverage for
employees to pay into his national health insurance program.
• The plan’s $50 billion to $65 billion price tag would be paid for by
discontinuing Bush’s tax cuts for those earning more than $250,000
a year.
Either shopping for healthcare coverage, starting an employee health
prevention program or becoming a more educated voter, we hope that
reviewing the above information will help you to better manage your

The Liberty Commons Medical Center broke ground last
month to kick-off development of their 2-story, 34,634 square-foot
medical office building on Yankee Road and SR 129 near Cincinnati
Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the Kroger Marketplace.
Suburban Pediatrics is the first confirmed tenant with plans to utilize
approximately 7,000 SF. The medical center expects to be opening
in the fall. The project team includes Properties Inc., Dov Limited,

This leadership program is designed to improve the quality, quantity
and effectiveness of leadership in Southeastern Butler County by
exposing community and business leaders to a broad cross-section
of the community; creating an awareness of the current challenges,
future demands and available resources; and building a commitment
to work collaboratively to prepare the community for the future.
In June, 35-40 community leaders will be selected, through an application process, to participate in our 10th year of SEBC Leadership
21. During an opening retreat and ten sessions (seven full day and
three half day) throughout the program year, class members explore
issues such as education, history, government, criminal justice, communications and economic development, to name a few. During
each session, the class explores a segment of the community indepth; visiting key locations such as the county jail, the local police
department, schools, food pantries, as well as area other businesses,
to get a clearer picture of the community in which they live and conduct business.
West Chester and Liberty region through participation in a community leadership program that combines skills-based learning, career
enhancement opportunities along with networking and social events.
It is designed to help young professionals feel more connected to
our community and to develop leadership skills, self-confidence and
maturity.
At the end of May, approximately 30 young professionals will be
selected, through an application process, to participate in this program of community education, career training and leadership development. Sessions include hands-on experiential and participatory
learning taught and facilitated by published authors, national speakers and other leaders in their fields. Over the course of the program,
class members will meet and interact with key current community
leaders, volunteers and elected officials.
Over nine months, starting with an opening two-day retreat, followed by half day sessions, class members are given the opportunity
to build strong professional networks with the business community
and to develop a level of mutual trust and to respect varying backgrounds, cultures and opinions while improving real world skills,
exploring issues and making key connections within their class and
community.

At every session, class members will become acquainted with the
key issues facing our region, and gain a grasp of the interdependence of each sector and of the mutual understanding and cooperation needed among them for our community to grow and thrive.
Leadership and communication skills building initiatives are also a
part of each session.
For ten years, SEBC Leadership 21 has opened and maintained a
constructive dialogue among all parties charged with making Liberty
and West Chester Townships even better places to live and work.
The program also builds upon long lasting business relationships
gained by participation with the entire class.

CONSTRUCTION
UPDATE
In an effort to communicate critical road construction information one on one to the traveling public, the Butler County Engineer’s
Office in cooperation with the West Chester
Chamber Alliance, Liberty Township, West
Chester Township, the Butler County TID, and the Ohio
Department of Transportation, is sponsoring a series of public
meetings in order to provide direct construction updates to local
property owners, businesses, and motorists so that any concerns
can be immediately addressed.
Meetings will be held monthly on the fourth Friday of each
month through September at the Ronald Reagan Lodge and
Boathouse at the Voice of America Park, just off of Cox Road in
West Chester. Auto park passes are not required.

THE EXECUTIVE ATHLETE
On beautiful Tuesday, members and visitors arrived at the West
Chester Chamber Alliance April Monthly Luncheon at Wetherington
Golf and Country Club. They were presented with a program on
how to gain peak performance, physical concentration and purposeful decision-making from Dr. Doug Linz, Medical Director of TriHealth Corporate Health. He challenged attendees to think about
how you take a formula of energy management, diet and exercise
and gain the ability to make changes and recognize the value to
perform at your peak!
His concept of a corporate executive athlete program, woke him up
to what he thought he already knew, considering his background is
in providing solutions to companies for employee health issues for
over 20 years. He asked, “How can Jack Nicklaus sink a 30 foot
putt? How could anyone do that two or three times in a row?” Dr.
Linz believes you can get consistent performance by following this
simple regime:
1. Eat breakfast within one hour of getting up
2. Drink lots of water, non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic beverages
3. Vary your day by taking breaks every 90 minutes every day, all
day long
Just like your car needs fuel to perform, your body’s tank needs to
be refilled every four hours. Dr. Linz went on to explain that small
meals each day provide peak performance. Your breakfast, lunch
and dinner should be the same size every day. Four hours following breakfast, you need more energy. Feed yourself two handfuls
of vegetables, fruits, grains (a.k.a. carbohydrates) and one serving
of protein. Just like medicine, you need to get your dosing right.
Anything more than we need in the four hour time frame turns to
fat. He shared with the group that the glycemic index (carbohydrates and the impact on your blood glucose level) ranks food on
how they affect you. Foods high in carbohydrates, not foods that
are high in fat, cause your blood glucose level to rise.
His secret is the lower the glycemic value, the better the impact of
the food you consume. He stressed that you shouldn’t avoid foods
you enjoy because they have a higher glycemic value; merely add
fiber to them, like nuts or bran. Take ice cream… add nuts or bran
and that ice cream turns into low glycemic value and it tastes good!
Dr. Linz questioned what type of “preferred exercise” person they
thought they were…competitive or non-competitive? Did they prefer
solitary activity or did they prefer to be active in groups; maybe
swimming or running? His questioning was to help the audience
determine the best type of exercise for their individual needs. He
stressed that there a two types of exercise - aerobic and resistance.
He cautioned against exercising to a discomfort level because the
muscle breaks down and won’t rebuild itself for another day or
two. The energy value equals the days in between. He shared that
for resistance training, you only need to do it every two to three
days. Dr. Linz asked the audience if they stretched. He stated that
stretching is important and the value added of stretching allows you
to maintain your range of motion. You can recover quicker if overused muscles are constantly stretched. The secret for exercise is that
it has to be fun; something you look forward to.

overview of the Ambassador Program. Suzanne announced and
introduced the Ambassador of the Quarter as Michelle Auftenkampe
from West Chester Conference Center. Our luncheon sponsors
were Liberty Township and Freund Freeze and Arnold. Joe Hinson
introduced the newest staff member of the West Chester Chamber
Alliance, Mike Powell, Finance Director.
