• Justin Fuente enters his first season at Virginia Tech after orchestrating a dramatic turnaround at Memphis.
• Fuente groomed a trio of prolific passers in his previous two stops in Paxton Lynch (Memphis), Andy Dalton and Casey
Pachall (TCU). Who will emerge as Virginia Tech’s starting QB in 2016 is clearly the spring’s biggest question mark.
• Senior Brenden Motley is the only returning Tech QB with starting experience for the Hokies. Dwayne Lawson and walkon Jack Click are back, while JUCO transfer Jerod Evans and freshman Josh Jackson are both new members of the squad.
• Bud Foster returns for his 30th season at Tech. Foster serves as the architect of the famed Lunch Pail Defense that has
ranked in the top five among FBS teams in scoring defense on six different occasions under his direction.
• Senior DB Chuck Clark led the squad with 107 tackles (65 solo) in 2015 and senior DE Ken Ekanem paced the squad
with 4.5 sacks a year ago, while junior LB Andrew Motuapuaka had a team-high 11.5 TFLs and 73 tackles last season.
Sophomore CB Adonis Alexander led the squad with four interceptions as a true freshman.
• Offensive coordinator Brad Cornelsen served as co-offensive coordinator with Fuente at Memphis, where the Tigers
averaged 38.2 ppg and 457.0 ypg of total offense over the past two seasons.
• Junior WR Isaiah Ford was a consensus All-ACC pick in 2015 after posting the best receiving season in Tech history with
75 catches for 1,164 yards (15.5 avg.) with 11 touchdowns. TE Bucky Hodges and WR Cam Phillips also return.
• Respected senior FB Sam Rogers is one of the squad’s most versatile performers. Along with an O-line that returns four
starters, he helped pave the way for RB Travon McMillian, who registered 1,043 yards and seven TDs last season.
• Special teams should continue to be a source of pride for Tech under James Shibest, who coached the nation’s top unit
at Memphis in 2014 (per ESPN’s special teams rankings). K Joey Slye is back after connecting on 23 of 30 FGs (76.7%).
• Fuente inherits a squad that finished the 2015 campaign with a 7-6 mark with five of those last six losses coming by 5.2
ppg, including a four-OT loss vs. Duke and a one-OT setback against eventual ACC Coastal Division champ, North Carolina.

THE MEMPHIS TURNAROUND
• Compiled 19-6 record in final two
seasons at Memphis, guiding the Tigers
to back-to-back bowl berths.
• Inherited a program that went 5-31
in three years before his arrival.
• Unanimous selection as 2014
American Athletic Conference Coach
of the Year when he led Memphis to its
first conference title since 1971.
• Guided Memphis to a 15-game
winning streak that included a 37-24
win over No. 13 Ole Miss (10/17/15).
• Memphis posted a 9-3 regular
season mark in 2015, capped by a 63-0
win vs. SMU in Fuente’s finale as the
Tigers’ head coach.
• The Tigers concluded a 10-3 season
in 2014 with a 55-48 double-OT
triumph over BYU in the Miami Beach
Bowl, the first 10-win season for the
Tigers since 1938.
DID YOU KNOW?
• Finished his playing career as a QB
at Murray State, the same school that
Frank Beamer coached prior to VT.
• Threw for 470 yards and five TDs
in his final game against Kentucky
Wesleyan (11/20/99) and had a careerhigh 553 yards at Southern Illinois
(9/11/99).
• Fuente’s great grandfather, Jack,
supported his family during the Great
Depression as a professional wrestler
under the nicknames “The Spanish Red
Devil” and “Spanish Jack.”
• Current Tech assistant head coach
Galen Scott introduced Fuente
to his future wife - the former Jen
Kabbes - while Fuente and Scott were
roommates at Illinois State.
• Fuente’s coach at Tulsa’s Union HS
was Bill Blankenship, who went on to
serve as head coach at Tulsa (2011-14).

nation’s top collegiate punter.
• During his final three seasons as
play caller, QBs coach and co-offensive
coordinator at TCU from 2008-10,
the Horned Frogs produced a 36-3
overall record and went on a 24-game
win streak in the Mountain West
Conference.
• From 2008-10, TCU was the only
program in the country that finished in
the Top 10 in both The AP Poll and USA
Today Coaches Poll all three of those
campaigns. TCU also made back-toback appearances in BCS bowls with
Fuente on the staff, registering a 2011
Rose Bowl victory over No. 5 Wisconsin.
• In 2010, TCU set single-season school
marks in touchdowns (73), points
scored (541), total offense (6,199 yards)
and first downs (327).

rushing (247.4 ypg) and 12th in total
offense (476.9 ypg) in 2010.
• As offensive coordinator/QBs coach
at Illinois State, the Redbirds ranked
fifth in both total offense (477.6 ypg)
and scoring (39.2 ppg) among FCS
squads in 2005.

#LUNCHPAILD
• Bud Foster enters his 30th season at
Virginia Tech, giving him the secondlongest continous tenure of any FBS
assistant behind only Oregon’s RBs
coach Gary Campbell.
• The architect of Tech’s famed “Lunch
Pail Defense,” Foster has served as
Tech’s defensive coordinator since 1995
(as co-coordinator) and taking over sole
possession of that role in 1996.
• Tech has finished in the top five
in scoring defense on six different
occasions under Foster, leading the
nation in both 1999 and 2006, while
ranking second in 2001, 2004 and 2005
• The Hokies registered six straight
top 10 finishes in scoring defense from
2004-09 under Foster.
• Since Foster took over sole reins as
Tech’s defensive coordinator in 1996,
the Hokies lead all FBS programs in
sacks (749.0), sack yardage (-5,177.0
yards);
interceptions (337) and
INT return touchdowns (44), while
owning a share of the nation’s best
mark in third-down defense with a
31.6 conversion rate.
• Dating back to 1996, only Ohio
State (16.5 ppg) and Alabama (16.6)
can boast better scoring defenses
than Virginia Tech (17.4), while
Alabama (291.2 ypg) is the only
squad that ranks ahead of Virginia
Tech (303.1) in total defense.
• Since the start of the 1996 season
the Hokies are second among FBS
squads in pass defense (187.8 ypg),
fourth in takeaways (552) and sixth in
rushing defense (115.3 ypg).
• Tech has permitted the lowest
completion percentage (50.5) of any
FBS team from 1996-2015, while
owning the nation’s highest INT
percentage (4.5) and the lowest TD/
INT differential (0.75) over that span.
• Virginia Tech owns an unbelievable
+120 turnover differential (552
takes/432 gives) dating back to 1996,
while 50 different defensive players
have scored a total of 77 touchdowns.
NFL DRAFT - APRIL 28-30
• CB Kendall Fuller is seeking to join
his three brothers who played for VT
and were drafted: S Vinnie (D4-05,
TEN), WR Corey (D6-14, DET) and CB
Kyle (D1-14, CHI).
• A Virginia Tech player has been
drafted in each of the past 22 NFL
Drafts dating back to 1994.
• Going back to 1996 NFL Draft, 38
of Bud Foster’s defensive pupils have
been drafted, including nine players
picked in the first or second rounds.
• Six of those nine first or secondround defensive selections have
been defensive backs, including a
pair of first rounders in CBs Kyle Fuller
(D1-14, CHI) and DeAngelo Hall (D108, ATL).
