Fondation Cartier Address Boulevard Raspail 261 75014 Paris France http://fondation.cartier.com/ . In 1994, the Fondation Cartier moved, exchanging Jouy-en-Josas near Versailles for the boulevard Raspail in the heart of Paris. Its new premises were designed by Jean Nouvel, an architect celebrated in France and throughout the world for the unique way in which he “dematerializes” architectural structure. He also famously designed the Institut du Monde Arabe (1987) and the Musée du Quai Branly (2006), both in Paris. For the external façade, he designed a glass screen running parallel to the boulevard Raspail that would prolong the boulevard’s perspective. Behind this transparent wall, a cedar of Lebanon planted by Chateaubriand in 1823 emerges from a monumental flower pot clad with multi-colored mosaics, a witty creation by the Italian designer Alessandro Mendini. Above the entrance to the building rises a wall of plants commissioned in 1998 from Patrick Blanc, a specialist in tropical botany and the creator of this innovative design. photo: Patrick Gries . Parc André Citroën Address Quai André-Citroën 75015 Paris France . The park occupies the site where the Citroën factory stood from 1915-1970. The park is split into several parts. The White Garden is tree-lined, with little foliage which opens on to the neighboring area. In its center there is a patio with white flowering plants. The Dark Garden is a sort of enclosed labyrinth, highly shaded with very dense and dark vegetation and terraces giving on to a small square. The Central Park consists of a large, rectangular expanse of lawn, diagonally sliced by a walkway. On the south side of the lawn are two very large, fifteen meter-high greenhouses, which also function as sitting-rooms and are themed in correspondence with the adjacent Theme Gardens. Both greenhouses are bordered by dozens of closely trimmed Magnolia trees and separated by a pavement of 120 individual dancing fountains. This ‘futuristic’ park was supposed to foreshadow the leisure spaces of the third millennium, but is that reflects today’s reality? The opinions are unfortunately various. photo: Lotje van Ooststroom . Project is public! . . . . . . . . . . . . . Rue des Suisses Address Rue des Suisses 17 75014 Paris France http://17ruedessuisses.mirrorz.com/ . This is the first project in Paris by the Herzog De Meuron team on an unusual site in the 14th Arrondisement not far from Gare Montparnesse. The result of a 1966 competition sponsored by the Paris public housing agency Régie Immobilière de la Paris (RVIP), the project is built on three interconnected parcels that include infill sites on two sides of a long perimeter block that face a long narrow plot on the interior of the block. The infill buildings are built to the neighbourhood height of 7 floors, while the interior slab is only 3 floors in height. Entry to the interior of the block is made beneath the infill buildings. In addition to the 4 story difference in building height, the long narrow block designed as a free-standing element in a long narrow garden and is protected with curving rolling wooden blinds that are in sharp contrast to the folding metal blinds that cover the façades of the street buildings. The three buildings contain about 60 flats and basement parking. . Project is not public! . Atelier Brancusi Address Place Georges-Pompidou 1 75004 Paris France . Constantin Brancusi arrived in Paris in 1904 after attending the Bucharest School of Fine Arts. He created the majority of his works in his Paris studios. Shortly before he died, he bequeathed his studio and all its contents to the French government on condition that the Musée National d'Art Moderne reconstitute the studio as it had been in its original location near Montparnasse. Architect Renzo Piano reproduced Brancusi's studio on one side of the Place Georges Pompidou, next to the eponymous Centre. The layout of the studio has been reconstituted down to the last detail with Brancusi's sculptures, photographs, manuals, discs and tools to satisfy the artist's wish to have his work displayed in its entirety. photo: Nazar Leskiw .
