Views of the golf course and waterways will be
a feature of Club Banora’s new al fresco deck.
Club Banora moves into 2016 in style
Twin Towns Board of Directors
believes the key to the Club’s
long-term success has been
its unwavering commitment to
maintaining its leading edge
through an ongoing schedule of
refurbishment,
redevelopment
and upgrades.
This year marks the beginning
of major improvements at Club
Banora. Over upcoming months,
members and patrons can expect
to see refurbishments underway, as
the walls surrounding the Tuscany
Room come down to make way for
increased dining space in the Bistro,
Slice and Fork, and a refreshed
ambience and atmosphere.
The plans also include the addition
of a lakeside al fresco dining area
at the rear of the Club that can
be enjoyed by all members and
visitors.
Twin Towns Executive Business
Manager Rod Pain said work is likely
to commence in April and will take
two to three months to complete.
“There will be minimal impact
on members and patrons and no
disruption to food and beverage
service, sporting or entertainment
at Club Banora.
“During the demolition of the
Tuscany Room surrounds and
opening up of this area, it will
be business as usual throughout
other areas of the Club,” he said.
In previous years, the Tuscany
Room has been underutilised
and Rod said that remodelling
this area will enable all members
and patrons to take advantage
of the lakeside deck overlooking
the golf course and picturesque
waterways.
“The al fresco deck, despite being
one of the Club’s best assets, has
been one of the most underutilised
areas of Club Banora, as previously
access has only been available to
those using the Tuscany Room for
private functions.

“Once the project is completed,
all members and patrons will be
able to make the most of the deck
for dining, enjoying a drink with
friends or enjoying some quiet
time reading a book or the paper
and taking in the view.
“The new bistro area will also open
up to the snooker room, making it
accessible to people under 18.
“This concept is welcomed by the
Snooker Club committee, who
hope the changes boost interest
and junior membership of their
club,” said Rod.
The upgrade will include sleek

the new area and a range of

and tiles.
There will be new facilities for
people with disabilities, as well as

BOARD CHAIRMAN’S
REPORT
Extracts from Annual Report
BOARD OF MANAGEMENT
REPORT 2015
Including brief end of year
results
On behalf of the Board of
Management of Twin Towns
Clubs and Resort I report that
we have experienced another
very
successful
year
with
the completion of the major
extensions in the main club,
received approval of our long
awaited development application
for the rezoning of Club Banora
land, undertook some upgrading
for our Twin Towns Juniors Club
and completed first stage of
the Resort refurbishment, while
continuing good trading at all
facilities.
We look toward 2016 in
anticipation with a number of
strategic
planning
initiatives
being developed by the Board
of
Management
with
our
management team and our
professional consultants.
As a not-for-profit community club
your Board and our Management
team are extremely conscious
of building on good corporate
governance and due diligence,
to be financially prudent, being
proactive in mitigating risk,
investigating the cost benefits of
new technology and savings in
environmental efficiency while
continually upgrading our aging
equipment and facilities and
returning profits to members and
our community.
As a community club you will not
grow market share nor drive your
business into the future unless
you’re giving community members
reasons to visit your club and
advocate your benefits to others
to create those reasons and build
loyalty.
“If you always do what you have
always done you will always get
what you have always had.”
Our team continually consider
visionary strategic options that
will provide members and the
community with a financially viable
club for the future providing the
next generation with state of the
art World Class facilities evolving
from successions of positive board
decisions over the past fifty eight
years.
With the support of a State
Government who understand the
importance of the essential fabric
the not for profit clubs provide to
communities and recognising a
Federal Government who, although
restricted by an indifferent Senate,
have generally supported the club
industry principle to establish an
uninterrupted period of prosperity
and growth without political
interference, we can continue to
build on this essential fabric of
unequalled social benefits and
sensational sporting options that
members and communities rely on.
The Board, Management and
consultants have shown extraordinary vision to “change”
and diversify the old model of
Twin Towns through a Strategic
Planning programme to reinvent
and rebuild a club from top to
bottom for the future.
This long term strategy to future
proof members’ facilities is already
paying dividends with growth
in revenue from each individual
department resulting in a flow on
of increased membership while
providing facilities and services
that members and guests have
come to expect.
The capital expenditure budget for
2015, the hidden costs of running
a business for Twin Towns, Club
Banora, Twin Towns Juniors and
the Resort, amounted to $11.5m.
Specific expenditure for all clubs
which covers insurance, rates,
Clubs Grants, donations, taxation,
Internet technology upgrades and
protection, Poker Machine duty
and CMS fees and Resort fees
totals some $13 million.
Twin Towns Clubs and Resort
preliminary and unaudited Group
profit before tax for 2015 was
$2 million with the cash profit of
$10.45 million expended mostly
on renovations. Low interest rates
averaging 3% which retirees are
well aware of provided interest
income on investments of $683K
for the year.
Twin Towns employment costs
included staff wages from our
Labour Hire Company all of
which supports the local Tweed
Community amounted to $20.3
million.
Twin
Towns
group
payments for goods and services
totalled $31 million. Taxes paid
to government including GST,
totalled $15.2 million in 2015.
2015 saw the Twin Towns group
gaming revenue as a percentage
of total revenue come in at
54.6%. Diversification of the core
business of gaming is a priority
to lessen the reliance on gaming
remembering responsible gaming
is the reason for our successes in
the past.
Members benefits total points in
dollar ($) terms for 2015 equated
to $841,163. The Board chose to
provide members with a Christmas
Bonus of an additional ten dollars
($10) to spend on their card during
the week prior to Christmas as a
token of Director’s appreciation
for member support of the club
during the year.
Taking a proactive approach
to benchmarking performance
of all departments to deliver
objectives and an effective
Work Place Health and Safety
environment to minimise risk for
employees, members, visitors and
all stakeholders is essential, with
Directors responsible for ensuring
a systematic approach on policy is
maintained at all times.
Twin Towns is a not-for-profit
community club with all profits
directed to the future social
wellbeing of members and the
community. This is emphasised
with the provision of world
class facilities, abundant social
activities
and
benefits
for
members including the fantastic
community sporting facilities
located at Club Banora.
With donations through Club
Grants and The Twin Towns Services
Community Foundation, many local
junior sporting groups and worthy
charitable organisations continue
to grow while donations providing
funding for Medical Research
benefits our community. This
year total grants of $1.4 million
would not be possible without the
members support during the year.
Twin
Towns
Services
Club
support of the Sub-Branch this
year was above all previous
years. The Centenary of ANZAC
Commemorations was profound
and what a fantastic investment
for the community. Years in
the making, the School Essay
competition with a prize of a
private jet trip for 44 students
to the National War Museum
in Canberra, the pre-dawn reenactment of the landing at
Gallipoli and the Dawn and Midday ANZAC Day Services attracting
in excess of 20,000 attendees,
was an absolute credit to all
involved and will be remembered
for generations.
Our constitution enshrines the
RSL Sub-Branch principle with
support and ensures that Twin
Towns
Services
Community
Club will always remember our
ex-servicemen who laid the
foundations for our great club,
with our continued support for
their legacy.
Throughout
2015,
Directors,
Management and staff continued
to strive to grow and diversify
revenue streams to ensure financial
viability and sustainability and to
promote transparency of this great
club for the long term future of
members and the community.
General Manager Rob Smith has
had another extremely successful
year with his leadership and
operational skills playing a major
role in the future growth options
of Twin Towns and I thank Rob for
his direction and his dedication.
The qualifications and skills of our
Board of Management and the
manner in which they conduct
themselves is exemplary while the
skill, care and diligence necessary
to conduct the strategic business
affairs of Twin Towns Clubs and
Resort is beyond reproach. I thank
them for their commitment and their
proactive response to the challenge
while valuing their friendship.
Continued high standards of
governance and due diligence,
including continued professional
development, are essential for the
continued success and direction
of Twin Towns Clubs and Resort
and with these principles in mind,
along with some consolidation
whilst future proof planning for
members continues, I am certain
2016 will be another year for
members to be proud of Australia’s
pre-eminent Registered Club.

Twin Towns Triathlon Club is one of
Australia’s Triathlon Club success stories
Back in the early nineties after
a weekly swim session with a
few mates at South Tweed Pool,
Doug McClaren suggested Doug
‘Scratcher’ Neil start a triathlon
group at Club Banora. This
conversation eventuated in the
first tri race on 25 November 1989
with Doug Neil, Doug McClaren,
Peter Whitcombe and Neil Kelly.
The Twin Towns Triathlon Club
foundations began with a 500m
swim, 14km bike and 4km run.
Within four weeks there were 11
starters and by the end of the
season there was an increase to
18 triathletes.
‘Scratcher’
has
continued
his dedication to the club as
Timekeeper/Recorder and proudly
has immaculate hand-written
results for every competitor since

triathletes such as Alex Gilks,
Trevor Laws, Phil Klein, Scott
Collins, John Warren and Scratcher
still participating today.
Every Saturday between September
and March approximately 85
triathletes complete a 500m swim,
15km bike and 4km run at Club
Banora and the wider community.
The club fosters an event for all
levels of fitness and ages and the
successful format with a handicap
event has provided an opportunity
for people to become involved in a
family type atmosphere at low cost
with a great emphasis on safety.
We are very proud of our major
‘Milestone Achievers’ with the
most races completed led by
Scratcher with 668 races followed
by the 500 Club of John Warren,
Glenn Lance, Alex Gilks, Rob
Gillies and recently crowned Kev
‘the rock’ Bannerman.
This season’s milestones include
400 Tracy Foyster; 300 Jenny
Scaysbrook; 200 Paul Woodger,
Craig Broadhurst ; 150 Jo Colga,
Richard Mourant, Warren Copping;
100 Wendy Sanders, Simon

championship combined with the
weekly handicap event is the most
hotly contested event in our club
history. Good luck to Will Styman,
Danny Khazen, Trevor Lawes,
Gerard Robards and Scott Styman

march route
The marshall area for 2016 will
be formed up on the corner
of Boundary & Coral Streets,
Tweed Heads (near the children’s
playground in Jack Evans Boat
Harbour). The march will go down
Boundary Street, turning left
into Wharf Street and then left
in Chris Cunningham Park. This is
due to the fact that we needed to
shorten the march to cater to our
older Veterans, and people will
only need to park their cars in one
place. Formation is at 10am, march
off 10.30am with school children
leading the march.

LADIES BOWLS
March will be a busy month for
our ladies, following the AGM
which is to be held on Tuesday

called for play on Friday 4 March,
with the triples the following week.

DIGGERS SWIMMING
Welcome to new member Rosie
McDermott who has wasted no
time in garnering points. Also
good to see Fred Leslie and Ross
Drury back at the pool. Our oldest
member who still competes is
Rod Earle, who kindly put on
hamburgers and drinks for us on
his 85th birthday. Not bad for
someone who was given the last
rites in his twenties when his mate
shot him while rabbit shooting.
Must be Rod’s long ears. Many
members attended the funeral
of popular former member Anna
Berry. Anna was famous for her
loud bellyflop start to every race.
Onlookers would be amused when
her supporters would yell “Go
Anna, goanna, goanna.” (See, Kerry
Packer always denied it was him.)
12 March sees us at the National
Championships at Southport, and
20 March is the date for our AGM.

RUNNERS AND WALKERS
It is with great sadness we hear of
the passing of Anna Berry, wife of
long standing member Peter Berry.
Our thoughts and prayers are with
you Peter. Congratulations to our
2015/2016 club champion Peter
Holmes. Most improved runner is
Julie Stevens and walker of the
year is Linda Saunders. The Don
Howatson trophy for club person
of the year was posthumously
awarded to the late Aussie
Bob Jones. Well done to our
prolific walker Bert Janes who
competed in a NZ half marathon
in February. A big thanks for all
the hard work and effort put in by
the outgoing committee and a big
welcome to our new committee.
Good luck to club members taking
part in the annual 45km Red Rock

MASTERS SWIMMING
What a great turn up for our first
carnival of the year at River City
in Brisbane. Libby was our ‘virgin’
swimmer and managed ‘personal
bests’ for her swims at her first
carnival. Great job Libby! Winning
medals for their age group were
Jenny 65-69 and coming 2nd
overall; Minnie 75-79 age group
gained 1st; and Fran 2nd. In the 8084 Barbara was 3rd. Di came 4th in
a most competitive age group. The
men swam well with Michael 3rd
in the 75-79 age group. Ron 80-84
gained 2nd place and our ‘oldest’
competitor, George, 95 - 99 was
1st! It is great to be back on deck
again after a horrendous ordeal
in hospital for 3 months due to a
doctor’s incompetence. My fitness

DIGGERS GOLF
GARDEN CLUB
The AGM will be held on 1 March,
followed by a lovely morning tea.
Overall winner last month was
Leonie Spurway with a white
bat plant. It was amazing, tall
and striking and perfect. From
Gold Coast Succulent Society
comments on bat plants; unlike
a well-drained garden bed, pots
always restrict the drainage of your
plant. The plant is surrounded by a
hard impervious layer and water
cannot move out or in except for
some holes at the bottom. In an
oversized pot, plant roots have no
chance of sucking up all that water
so it can control the moisture
around it to the conditions it
likes. The plant is drowned by lack
of oxygen and air flow creating
conditions for fungal disease
and attack by insects especially
when the roots are not growing
in winter a solution is add coarse
bark. Visitors and new members
welcome. Enquiries to Maria Harry
on 07 5524 8234.
GOLF
Members are reminded that the
annual Autumn refurbishment of
greens and tees will take place on
20 and 21 March when the course
will be closed. The golf section
AGM is in the Tuscany Room at 2pm
on 19 March and members are
encouraged to attend. The AGM is
one of the last events in the room
which is being removed as the
open space fit out is implemented
at Club Banora. Under the
guidance of Treasurer, Ray Tume,
the golf section completed the
year in a solid financial position
strengthened by the Twin Towns
December Grant. Internal revenue
raising was at a high in 2015/2016
and thanks are extended to
members for their generosity. Well
done to Sub Committee members
and all helpers who undertook
the competition day collection of
money. Congratulations to Kim
Hall who is the 2016 Club Banora
Men’s Medal of Medals winner.

Footy, surf and cold
beers at 1st on Wharf
The Quiksilver Pro kicks off at Snapper Rocks from 10 March and this
month also heralds the long-awaited return of the NRL and AFL footy
seasons.
As the locals know, 1st on Wharf is the best place in town to relive the
day’s Quikky Pro surfing action or catch the football matches live on
the 103 inch big screens.
If you are heading to the Quikky Pro this year, 1st on Wharf is just
around the corner from Snapper Rocks.
Call in for lunch or at the end of the day for some air-conditioned
comfort and icy cold beers, and you’ll find even the dress code at
1st on Wharf is chilled. T-shirts, thongs and boardies - not a problem.
You’ll definitely be welcomed so come straight from the beach.
1st on Wharf has all the favourite local and international beers on
tap and the legendary $17 all-day-dining special will bring a smile to
your face, even if your favourite team is down and out.
The $17 all-day-dining price includes a main meal plus a
complimentary handle of beer, glass of house wine or soft drink.
The dining special menu features a hearty team of winners such as
parmigianas, burgers, steaks, bangers ’n’ mash and fish ’n’ chips.
Round 1 of the NRL Premiership series kicks off on Thursday 3 March
and the first game of the AFL season is Thursday 24 March.
Put this one in your diary! If you can’t make the MCG on 28 March
when the Hawks host the Cats, make sure you’re at 1st of Wharf for
what is set to be an Easter Monday thriller.
Kaleidoscope of stylish
cocktails in Breezes
When it comes to cocktails, Breezes
Bar and Lounge at Twin Towns rolls
out a colourful and sophisticated
liquid welcome mat, with a drinks
list that throws a contemporary
twist on old classics and introduces
some new concoctions that
embrace a dash of flair.
better not more’ is a trend that
has clearly emerged over the past
decade.
As an art form, mixology has come
a long way since the theatrical
antics of Tom Cruise behind the
bar in the movie Cocktail. ‘Shaking
up a storm’ has stepped aside for a
more sophisticated take, and ‘drink
But a quick glance at the new
Breezes drinks list assures
customers this bar is clearly ontrend in the wonderful world of
cocktails and there is no shortage
of top shelf spirits to put the icing
on the cake.
Expectations of high quality and
boutique spirits and mixers, dashes
of herbs and spices, and fresh
homemade ingredients have seen
cocktails rise to a whole new level.
One of the current favourites
at Breezes is The Aviation. This
vintage cocktail was first seen
in the 1917 book ‘Recipes for
Mixed Drinks’, written by New
York’s Wallick Hotel bartender,
Hugo R Ensslin. This was the last
bartending guide published in
New York before Prohibition.
Mildly aromatic and deep lavender
in colour, The Aviation includes
Crème de Violette, a liqueur that
uses violet flowers to create its
unique taste. Breezes’ recipe also
includes Tanqueray Gin, Luxardo
Maraschino liquor and lemon
juice, topped with The Aviation
trademark, a maraschino cherry.
For something with a little more
bite, try a Tommy Margarita, a mix
of Patron Silver Tequila, Cointreau,
lemon juice and Agave nectar,
finished with a rosemary and
Murray River salt rim.
These two are just the tip of
the ice-cube! The full range of
exquisite and moreish cocktails
is available every day in Breezes
Bar and Lounge, Wednesday to
Sunday, from 2pm until late.
Drinks alone are not what makes
Breezes Bar so special. It’s
the décor, the service and the
ambience.
Travel the length and breadth of
the Coast and you won’t find a
more stylish and comfortable bar
where you can meet with friends,
enjoy some quality beverages and
receive VIP service day and night.
