Kathy Thomas
Kathy recognizes how important it is for the athletes
she coaches to enjoy their Special Olympics participation and to respect the value of playing their best game.
Kathy’s involvement reflects the spirit of acceptance,
dignity and respect for all individuals with disabilities
that Special Olympics promotes.
Her enthusiasm and support of Special Olympics and
her desire to provide the best experience and quality of
competition to our athletes is what makes Kathy Thomas
a Special Olympics Hero.
VPD • Briefs
Special Olympics Illinois leadership, staff, families and athletes are reminded everyday how many wonderful people
have a passion for Special Olympics. Kathy Thomas is one
of those wonderful people.
Kathy has been active with Special Olympics for more
than 20 years! Kathy is the Special Recreation Coordinator for the Veteran’s Park District.
Veteran’s Park District serves the communities of Melrose
Park, Franklin Park, Leyden Township, Northlake and River
Grove in west Cook County. Kathy interacts regularly with
the Area 5 office of Special Olympics located in Lombard.
The Area 5 office provides 8 competitions to more than
1,200 children and adults from 43 local agencies.
As you might imagine, the world of Special Olympics Illinois has experienced tremendous change during the 20
years Kathy has been involved. But Kathy hasn’t skipped
a beat. Veteran’s Park District generously hosts the Special Olympics Illinois District Bocce Tournament and has
done so for more than 12 years. Hundreds of athletes
and their coaches, families, volunteers and supporters
show up for an exciting day of bocce competition. This
bocce event has grown and needs have changed. Kathy
is always a step ahead of what needs to be done to make
the event a success. Plenty of communication with many
organizations and departments; venue set up including
equipment, signage, food arrangements; attention to the
fields as bocce is played outdoors, parking and drop off
for busses and guests, etc. etc. etc.
Clearly, Kathy goes above and beyond in everything she
does. Kathy is a phenomenal coach! We are told by the
Area 5 Director Katie Grisham that athletes and families
love her. She encourages growth in her athletes and
stresses good sportsmanship.

Summer Carnival
This year we had over a hundred people attend the
Special Recreation Summer Carnival. Thanks to the
generosity of the Proviso Township Mental Health Commission for making our annual Carnival possible.
Everyone enjoyed free crafts, games, new obstacle
inflatable, hot dog lunch and a fabulous DJ. The highlights of the Carnival were Elvis Presley impersonator
and the miniature golf. Even the rain did not dampen
our spirits! We hope to see everyone next year.

Youth Basketball League (Grades 1-8)
SPORTS • Children/Youth
Veterans Park District is proud to present its annual Youth
Basketball League. The basketball league will be available
for grades 1-8. All children will receive participation medals
this year along with team shirts. Please help the program
continue to grow by spreading the word throughout your
child’s schools and activities. Team shirts will be provided
before the start of the first game. Coaches will contact parents with their practice times and dates. Teams will practice
once or twice a week depending on grade level and gym
space. Read the descriptions below to become familiar with
our basketball leagues.
(Information provided on the Youth Basketball League is subject
to change at the discretion of Veterans Park District if necessary.)
Due to our enrollment numbers growing in the past 2 years,
some grade levels might be practicing at different locations,
playing a different day or playing at a different location. This
will all be determined closer to the start of the season and
determined by the number of kids enrolled in our league.
Grades 1-2
The season is scheduled to begin at the end of January on Saturday mornings. Teams will practice once a week. On game day, they
will also practice for the first 20 minutes and then play a non-competitive game after. Coaches will provide parents with schedules on their day of practice. All children will have equal playing time. At this level we stress the importance of teamwork and fun.
Coaches will be allowed to be on the court to encourage children to pass, dribble, shoot and help avoid committing fouls.
Grades 3-4
The season is scheduled to begin at the end of January on Saturdays mid-afternoon following Grades 1-2. Teams will practice
twice a week. Each team will have a roster of up to ten players. All children will have equal playing time. Veterans Park District will
provide IHSA certified referees for this grade level. This league places a strong emphasis on fun and learning – not competition.
Grades 5-6
The season is scheduled to begin at the end of January on Saturday early evenings following Grades 3-4. Teams will practice twice
a week. Each team will have a roster of up to ten players. All children will have equal playing time. Veterans Park District will provide IHSA certified referees for this grade level. This league places a strong emphasis on fun and learning – not competition.
Grades 7-8
The season is scheduled to begin at the end of January on Saturday nights following Grades 5-6. Teams will practice 1-2 times a week.
Each team will have a roster of up to ten players. All children will have equal playing time. Veterans Park District will provide IHSA
certified referees for this grade level. This league places a strong emphasis on fun and learning – not competition.
Volunteer Coach Program:
Volunteer coaches make the Youth Basketball League possible and a success. We are always in need of coaches, both beginner and
experienced coaches for our recreational Youth Basketball League. Volunteer Coaches are asked to do a Criminal Background Check,
Coaches Contract, Volunteer Waiver and Release Form, Volunteer Application and Volunteer Emergency Information Form. If you’re
not sure about being a head coach for a team, assistant coaching can be arranged. If you do have questions about Volunteer Coaching, contact Roy Rodriguez at (708) 716-4822.
Skills Days and Team Make Up
Skills days are very important and should not be missed – parents please save the dates. The skills day are scheduled to evaluate
children’s performance in an effort to create balanced teams. The first hour is to evaluate basic skills on dribbling, shooting and
passing. The second hour is to evaluate kids on game-play. How they play defense, offense and overall knowledge of the game.

Rules of Conduct
I. Equal Access
No eligible participant shall be limited in
the exercise of any right, privilege, advantage or opportunity on the basis of race,
sex, creed, national origin, activities, services, or benefits.
II. Behavior
Participants are expected to exhibit positive behavior at all times. The following
guidelines have been developed to help
make park district programs safe and
enjoyable for all participants. Additional
rules may be developed for particular programs and athletic leagues as deemed
necessary by staff.
Participants shall:
1. Show respect to all participants and
staff.
2. Take directions from staff.
3. Refrain from using abusive or foul
language.
4. Refrain from causing bodily harm to
self, other participants, or staff.
5. Show respect to equipment, supplies,
and
facilities.
III. Discipline
A positive approach will be used regarding discipline. Staff will periodically review
rules with participants during the program session. If inappropriate behavior
occurs, prompt resolution will be sought
specific to each situation. The park district
reserves the right to dismiss a participant
whose behavior endangers the safety of
himself/herself or others.
IV. Procedure
Upon registration or entry into the program, the parent/guardian should be
solicited for any information regarding
special accommodation needed. For example, if the registration form asks to
describe accommodation needed for the
participant’s enjoyment of a particular
program, and the parent response indicates “a positive role model for behavior,”
or another response of that nature, the
parent should be contacted for information about any behavior modification programs in place at school or home.
Attempts should be made to utilize these
in the program.
