As a semicrystalline material, acetal is also characterized by a low coefficient of friction and good wear properties––especially in wet environments. Because acetal absorbs minimal amounts of moisture, its physical properties remain constant in a variety of environments. Low moisture absorption results in excellent dimensional stability for close-tolerance machined parts. In high moisture or submerged applications, acetal bearings outperform nylon 4 to 1. Acetal is ideally suited for close tolerance mechanical parts and electrical insulators which require strength and stiffness. It also offers resistance to a wide range of chemicals including many solvents. Acetron® GP rollers are light weight with an ability to bouceback making for tight tolerances. ACETRON® GP Acetal (POM-C) is Quadrant’s general purpose copolymer acetal and is the only porosity-free acetal product available today. ACETRON® GP natural and black are FDA, USDA, NSF, Canada AG and 3A-Dairy compliant. DELRIN® Acetal (POM-H), a homopolymer acetal, offers slightly higher mechanical properties than ACETRON® GP Acetal, but may contain a lowdensity center, especially in larger cross-sections. ACETRON® GP Acetal also offers better chemical resistance than homopolymer acetal. Delrin® is better suited for small diameter, thin-walled bushings that benefit from the additional strength and rigidity of homopolymer acetal. DELRIN® AF Blend is a unique thermoplastic material for use in moving parts in which low friction and long wear life are important. It is a combination of PTFE fibers uniformly dispersed in Delrin® acetal resin. This combination offers better wear characteristics than unfilled Delrin®. Delrin® AF Blend, supplied as a 2:1 blend of Delrin® AF100 and Delrin® 150 resins, has excellent sliding / friction properties. Bearings made of Delrin® AF Blend can operate at higher speeds while exhibiting reduced wear. These bearings are also essentially free of slip-stick behavior because the static and dynamic coefficient of friction is closer than with most plastics. Delrin® AF Blend retains 90% of the strength that is inherent in unmodified Delrin® acetal. Some properties are changed due to the addition of the softer PTFE fiber. The Natural color of Delrin® AF Blend is Dark Brown. Ertalyte® TX is a better value in many applications where Delrin® AP blend is considered. DELRIN® AF 100 (unblended) offers a slightly higher limiting PV and lower coefficient of friction due to additional PTFE content. This added PTFE typically decreases the wear capability and impact strength. Delrin® AF 100 is available on a custom basis. PET-P PRODUCTS Has the stability of Acetal. • Good for both wet and dry environments • Excellent stain resistance • High strength and rigidity––ideal for close tolerance parts • Good wear resistance and excellent dimensional stability FDA compliant ERTALYTE® TX wears well against other plastics and metals. This bonding results in properties not normally attainable in reinforced PTFE. FLUOROSINT® grades offer an excellent combination of low frictional properties and dimensional stability. FLUOROSINT® 500 has nine times greater resistance to deformation under load than unfilled PTFE. Its coefficient of linear thermal expansion approaches the expansion rate of aluminum, and is 1⁄5 that of PTFE––often eliminating fit and clearance problems. It is 1⁄3 harder than PTFE, has better wear characteristics and maintains low frictional properties. FLUOROSINT® 500 is also non-abrasive to most mating materials. FLUOROSINT® 207 has unmatched dimensional stability, excellent creep resistance and its white color uniquely positions this material to serve FDA regulated applications. It is non-permeable in steam and complies with the FDA’s regulation 21 CFR 175.300. Its relative wear rate is 1⁄20 the rate of PTFE below 300°F, making it an excellent choice for aggressive service bearings and bushings. FLUOROSINT® 207 is available on a custom basis at a surcharge. TORLON® T4301 PAI (Bearing Grade) Rod PAI (Polyamide-Imide) Stiffness and strength at temperature extremes. • Maintains strength and stiffness to 500°F • Minimal expansion rate to 500°F • Excellent wear resistance in bearing grades • Able to endure harsh thermal, chemical and stress conditions DURATRON® PAI (Formerly TORLON®) exhibits versatile performance capabilities and proven use in a broad range of applications. DURATRON® shapes are offered in extruded and compression molded grades. DURATRON® is the highest performing, melt processable plastic. It has superior resistance to elevated temperatures. It is capable of performing under severe stress conditions at continuous temperatures to 500°F. Parts machined from DURATRON® stock shapes provide greater compressive strength and higher impact resistance than most advanced engineering plastics. DURATRON® PAI’s extremely low coefficient of linear thermal expansion and high creep resistance deliver excellent dimensional stability over its entire service range. DURATRON® is an amorphous material with a Tg (glass transition temperature) of 537°F. DURATRON® stock shapes are post-cured, eliminating the need for additional curing by the end user in most situations. A post-curing cycle is sometimes recommended for components fabricated from extruded shapes where optimization of chemical resistance and / or wear performance is required. For large shapes or custom geometries like tubular bar, compression molded DURATRON® shapes offer designers economy and flexibility. Another benefit of selecting a compression molded grade is that resins are cured, or “imidized” prior to molding which eliminates the need to post-cure shapes or parts fabricated from compression molded shapes. Popular extrusion and injection molding grades of DURATRON® are offered as compression molded shapes. Typically, you can identify a compression molded grade as having a second digit of “5” in the product name. Note: DURATRON® PBI is extremely hard and can be challenging to fabricate. Polycrystalline diamond tools are recommended. Call TPI for a fabrication guide. ECOGEHR® Semi-finished Plastics Based on Renewable Resources ECOGEHR® PLA (Polylactide and polylactic acid) is a linear, aliphatic polyester. PLA is obtained from sugar or starch via fermentation by micro-organisms. This means that it is a thermoplastic polymer based on renewable raw materials. PLA materials are CO2-neutral due to the proportion of renewable raw materials. PLA is thermoformable, printable, bondable and weldable. PLA is FDA approved, EN 71-3 and EN 71-9 approved. ECOGEHR® PLA-N ECOGEHR® PLA-V ECOGEHR® PLA-L ECOGEHR® PLA-WF ECOGEHR® C-L is comprised of the wood components cellulose, natural fibres, lignin and fatty acids. It possesses many interesting properties that together are very similar to natural wood. Consequently, this material is very pleasant to the touch and is easily workable. It also has a high degree of rigidity (and a tensile module of elasticity up to 616 kpsi). Clearly, its advantages compared with grown wood lie in the material’s homogeneity. Whereas wood displays density variations resulting from growth rings or imperfections (branches), ECOGEHR® C-L provides an isotropic material texture and reproducible properties. This 100% renewable material is largely neutral in terms of its CO2 balance, and like wood it can be disposed of via decomposition or burning. C-L is thermoformable, printable and bondable. ECOGEHR® WPC (Wood-polymer-composites) materials are composites of standard polymers and wood fibres. The excellent binding of the wood fibres to the polymer gives the materials extremely high mechanical strength. WPC is weather-resistant and can be given antibacterial, fungicidal and UV resistant properties as an option. ECOGEHR® WPC-30PP ECOGEHR® WPC-30PE ECOGEHR® PA are bio-based polyamides (PA) and are obtained from the oil of the castor oil seed. Components of this oil can be isolated, and can then be incorporated into PA up to a certain percentage or even form the entire basis of a polyamide. With these materials, we can already offer properties that are compulsory for the industrial use of plastics. With their high continuous use temperatures, these materials can already be categorized as industrial plastics, and are also suitable for long-term use. When deciding on a compression molded sheet versus an extruded sheet there are distinct differences. Material stability, sheet size, and surface finish are all factors to be considered. Westlake compression molded sheets are formed under heat and pressure and produce a very dimensionally stable, virtually stress-free sheet, ideal for machining and fabrication. When machining close tolerance parts, a fabricator will experience minimal material movement. Westlake’s sheets have stress levels that are extremely low or nonexistent, in some cases less than those typically found in the same materials that have been extruded and secondarily annealed. Westlake’s compression molded sheet offers a wide variety of surface finishes including press polished, haircell and other custom surface textures versus the extruded/annealed sheet which often has with a rough planed surface.
