About Our Cover Model
Every one of us has faced an important decision at some point in our
lives. Imagine you live on a rural road, you don’t drive or have a car
and you have a limited income. Behind your house is a feral cat colony
but you don’t know what to do! One day you find one of the feral cats
on your porch and she is very pregnant. What would you do?
Ms. E was faced with this exact situation. Yet, she has a huge heart and decided to take this pregnant
cat, now named Margaret, in as her own. Once the kittens were born, she contacted HCAS so they
could find new homes because she was not able to properly care for them. She was heartbroken to
give up the sweet little kittens. It was a very difficult time.
One of the kittens was not around when Animal Services arrived so when it showed up again she
decided to keep her as well and named her Axcelle. A few months later, Axcelle was pregnant, too.
Again, she had to make a decision about the litter of kittens. The difference this time was that Animal
Services told her about HAWC and how we could provide assistance to get her cats spayed.
Ms. E felt like there wasn’t a solution, but once she found out about HAWC she was able to get her cats
spayed and stop the litters. HAWC is working with Harnett County Animal Services to get the feral
colony behind Ms. E’s house under control and help her find new homes for the remaining kittens. Ms.
E is the type of resident that HAWC works to reach. The ones that don’t know what to do or where to
turn for help. This is why we chose Axcelle as our 2014 SANTA Ball spokesmodel.

Sponsorship Impact
Founded in July 2011, HAWC works to build partnerships between community residents, county agencies and
leaders, and advocacy/humane groups for the advancement of animal welfare. Our mission to reduce overpopulation, increase adoption of shelter pets, improve the welfare of animals and strengthen our community is accomplished by the dedication and work of our all-volunteer force. Since inception, HAWC has continued to grow and add programs to benefit our community’s future.
The long-term solution to overpopulation is with spaying and neutering.
The SANTA program provides funding for spay and neuter surgeries as well
as transport service to area clinics. Our program is modeled after programs
in highly successful communities and, as such, is targeted to those that
need it most.
With your support, we will spay/neuter over 500 cats and dogs in Harnett County this year.
SOAR (Students of Animal Responsibility):
This year, our program will reach over
400 4th grade students with lessons of
kindess, respect and responsibility with
regard to pets, safety around dogs and
cats and the importance of spaying and
neutering pets.
Shelter Support: Supplied vaccines and dewormer for
pets awaiting adoption at the Harnett County Animal
Shelter to give them a healthy start in life.
AniMeals: Provided 32,850 meals
for pets of residents in need.
