Topaz. Incidenten har fått ett stort eko inom offshore världen och den ger ett intressant perspektiv på säkerhet,
värderingar, ledarskap, procedurer samt agerande i nöd som vi dagligen arbetar med i den marina miljön.
The Story
This is the story of one night in September 2012, 90 metres below the surface of the North Sea. Onboard the
diving support vessel Bibby Topaz a rare sequence of events involving the combined effects of faults in the
dynamic positioning system left the ship drifting hundreds of metres off position. As a result, one of the divers
who had been working within a subsea structure when the loss of vessel position alarm sounded found himself
trapped by his umbilical on making his way back to the dive bell. The umbilical, which provides the diver with
breathing gas, hot water for his suit, light and communications violently parted leaving him stranded alone in
complete darkness in one of the most hostile environments on earth with a limited supply of emergency breathing gas. This is the story of the fight for survival of diver Chris Lemons and the human reaction to changing
circumstances.
