Canadians have a love
and connection with the
lakes like no other. It isn’t
even necessary to put
it into words – we just
know. Whether we are
near, on or in the water, the feeling of
SXULÀFDWLRQDQGFRPSOHWHQHVVDERXQGV
Canadian with maternal roots in Nova
Scotia and paternal roots in the Ottawa
Valley. I started to commit to the idea my
experience for painting is very local –
very Canadian.” Of the cover image on
this issue of The Link she says, “Embrace
II was my way of being one with this
feeling of the large concept of Canada.”

truly captures Canadiana in her painting series known as “water.” One look

Well-known and critically praised Canadian writer Margaret Laurence lived

water.” Born in the Ottawa Valley, she
spent a great deal of her early childhood
close to the Rideau water system. Her
family moved to North Bay near Trout

and this started her relationship with
the ‘dark navy lakes,’ so well-associated
with the northern parts of this province. She also attributes this area with
the ice and snow in all of her imagery.

her own history, as she recalls, “I became

7KH LGHD FDPH WR :LQVORZ LQ when a gentleman approached him
after the opening night of one of
his plays. “He started talking to me
about his Mom, how she had never
been able to hug him and how she
had all these issues. His mother was
a Barnardo child,” said Winslow.
“That interested me. I didn’t know
much about child immigration so I
just started researching it from there
and discovered there are many people
with that kind of heritage in this area
and throughout Ontario,” he said.
In Peterborough, there was a
distributing home for girls called
+D]HOEUDHRQ%DUQDUGR$YHQXHZKLFK
RSHQHG DURXQG DQG ZDV WKHUH
XQWLO WKH V ´7HQ WKRXVDQG JLUOV
went through there. Peterborough

Barnardo children who were still
living at the time.
A sequel, Wounded Soldiers, runs

of World War I. It is set in a military
hospital in England where a young
Barnardo soldier is being treated for
shell shock. During treatment, he
reunites with a childhood friend living
with cerebral palsy. The same actors
who played the young boys in the
ÀUVW UXQ RI Doctor Barnardo’s Children
\HDUVDJRDUHWDNLQJRQWKHUROHVLQ
this sequel as adults.

watching a play. “It’s very unique for
the audience,” said artistic director,
Robert Winslow. “It’s relaxing to be
out in the countryside. There are no

and they see you.” Because there is
no division between the stage and the
audience, there is more intimacy.

his memory is very faulty so he
doesn’t really know what happened
to cause this amnesia. Throughout the
course of the play he discovers what
happened to him.”

Rather than being literal, Winslow
wants to create the sounds of live battle
through choral work of the actors and
with instruments. “There may be the
odd recorded thing, to get your head
around how deafening the roar would

exhaustion in just
a few short hours!”
As summertime comes on, the days
lengthen, the heat settles in and the
overwhelming urge to kick back takes
RYHU %HZDUH /D]LQHVV FDQ OHDG WR H[haustion in just a few short hours.
Here’s how. On a sunny summer Saturday afternoon, my wife and toddler are
running errands. The honey-do list can
wait. My one task is to sling up a hammock and waste my life away.
Easily done, right? I even remember
where I put the hammock away last
year. It’s somewhere amid the camping
gear, which is mostly in the basement
except for a few items in the hall closet.
I learn this as I search – cleaning up as
I go. I won’t be able to relax properly
with a mess on my mind.
The hammock, as it turns out, is in the
ODXQGU\ URRP 1RZ MXVW KDYH WR ÀQG
the hooks to hang it with. I ransack the

garage, the pantry and the shed. These
places require tidying too, naturally. I
emerge much later with one hook, no
mate. Never mind, I’ll improvise. My
dream of a perfect summer afternoon

Unfortunately I can’t hang the hammock where I wanted to without pruning the tree. Doing that makes the yard
look unkempt by comparison, so I cut
back the lilacs, trim the vines and weed
WKHÁRZHUEHG/RRNVJUHDWH[FHSWWKH
lawn needs mowing. A shaggy lawn
would ruin my relaxing.
,PRZWKHODZQLQDOD]\PDQ·VGHOLULum, imagining myself lying at ease in
the hammock. In my weakened state I
notice the picnic table looks askew. The
bolts need tightening. A quick job, if I

And sweep the deck. All this so that I
can relax. I can’t wait, really I can’t.
So it goes, until late in the afternoon.
My urge to take it easy has become a
mythic quest. Only when I have faced
every demon, tamed every task – short
of reshingling the roof – do I actually
get to hang the hammock.
Heaven awaits…there’s just time
enough left in the day to rig up the hamPRFNEHWZHHQWZRWUHHVÀQGDEHHUD
quest-within-a-quest!), collapse into the
welcoming webbing and RELAX.
It is at that moment, that one perfect
moment of utter luxury, my wife will
inevitably arrive home, her arms full of
groceries, a baby with a full diaper in
tow and in need of a helping hand.
Turns out it was in the hall, underneath

while I was cleaning the closet earlier.
Great! Got the tools. What was I doing?

Nothing brings this
country to a momentary
standstill like the death
of one of our very own
beloved authors. In early
May this year, we came
to a sudden halt. The nation responded immediately – it was
announced on every radio station from
coast to coast, on local and national television news and in every newspaper,
informing us of the loss of a most impassioned writer, ardent environmentalist and a true Canadian icon.
)DUOH\0RZDWGHDGDW7KHHQGRIDQ

One of Canada’s best- known and bestloved authors who chose to reside in

Automatically you think of the music,
but the festival is also made up of four
villages: the artists’ village, wellness village, sustainable living village and family and children’s village. The artists’
village is a long lane of individual artists of all genres. It has everything from
a gentleman who makes musical instruments right through to pottery and artwork. In the wellness and sustainability
areas you can learn techniques and experience treatments.
Some people even say their favourite
part of the festival is the food. “We call it
harvest food because we make sure that
everyone who participates is as local as
can be, that the food is as local as can be
and that it’s fresh-made, most of it on
site, if possible,” said Cody. Last year,

Summer is a very special season after our
long, cold Canadian
winters. Everyone enjoys the warmth of the
sun, the smell of the
fresh morning dew after a little rain
and the peaceful sounds of chirping
birds, tree frogs and peepers. Now, if
only someone would invite us to their

If you are lucky a friend may invite you
for a day or even a weekend to share
and enjoy their cottage lifestyle with
you. Here are a few tips to ensure a
pleasant visit and a chance for a return
invite. When visiting a friend’s cottage be on your best behaviour. What
you don’t want to do is create a lot of
work for your hosts. Simple things to

bake, then purchase something delicately delicious from your local bakery
so dessert is also taken care of.

The trick with this style of warm potato salad is to pour the dressing over while the
potatoes are warm which helps the potatoes soak up the lemon juice. You can substitute apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar if you are out of lemons. Boil the

the best mountain biking around is
at the Ganaraska Forest,” said Wood.
“There is one trail sanctioned by the
International Mountain Bike Association, called the Epic Trail. It’s beautifully marked and there’s an option that

and children’s games, I
think a well-placed and
well-used lawn can be a great thing.

spaces could be managed.
When it comes down to it, lawns are
unproductive and devoid of biodiversity. They became a status symbol a few
hundred years ago, as only the very

many irritants with it,

comfortable this season.

Sunblock is always recommended as the
primary solution when spending long
periods of time in the sun, but boosting
the amount of antioxidants in your diet
can assist with reducing your chance of
getting a bad burn.

antioxidants can also help heal the
damage that has been done to your skin.
They can be found naturally in vitamins
A, C and E. It’s wise to apply aloe vera to
soothe and hydrate the skin, especially if
you are feeling discomfort.
Chlorine
Argan oil is a great option to protect
your hair when spending time in the
pool. It’s not overly greasy and it won’t
pollute the pool. Let it absorb into the
hair before you go swimming and apply
more afterward.

lavender, catnip and citronella.
Tea tree oil is a good topical solution for
soothing an itch and ledum is helpful to
take orally for skin irritation.

Rhus tox is a popular homeopathic
remedy for treating this dreaded
irritation. Though it’s the Latin name
for poison ivy, it doesn’t actually contain
any poison ivy and it can’t give you a
rash, but it has similar characteristics.
You can take it orally, preventively or,
if you already have poison ivy, it will
quickly clear up the rash.
