Undervisning
Undervisningen består av föreläsningar och seminarier. Möjligheten att klara av
de olika kurserna minskar avsevärt om man inte följer den. Därför rekommenderar vi starkt alla studenter att delta i så mycket undervisning som möjligt. Observera att deltagandet i seminarierna är obligatoriskt.
Skrivningar
Skrivningarna äger rum inom en vecka efter respektive momentets slut. En
andra chans (omskrivning) ges också.

Seminarier
Studerande som är intresserade är även välkomna att delta i de högre seminarierna i praktisk och teoretisk filosofi samt i de övriga seminarierna.

Filosofiska föreningen
Filosofiska föreningen sammanträder minst fyra gånger per termin. Alla, även
icke medlemmar, är välkomna till sammanträdena. Dessa inleds med ett föredrag. Efter föredragen anordnas en sexa, i vilken alla är välkomna att delta.
Bli medlem i föreningen under ett läsår genom att betala in (endast) 50 kronor
på postgiro 570360–8, så får du personliga kallelser till sammanträdena hem i
brevlådan.

Medvetandefilosofi / Philosophy of Mind
Instructor: Pauliina Remes
The course is an introduction to the themes and questions belonging to philosophy of mind, including mind-body-relationship, consciousness and intentionality, perception, and thought. The focus will be on, first, different solutions to the
mind-body problem and, second, on a selection of philosophical problems connected to different mental phenomena. Besides presenting dualism, different
kinds of monism as well as functionalist theories of mind, it will be asked what
it is to be conscious, what it is for the mind to have content and to be related to
the world, and what kind of central philosophical problems present themselves
within the thematics of perception and thought. The course proceeds through introductory lectures on the core problems, solutions and conceptions. To support

them, the students are expected to independently read the course literature. Second objective of the course is to guide students in writing philosophy course essays by giving them supervised practice and guidelines. The students are expected to produce a short essay within (and not after!) the timeframe of the
course, and to present it in the shared seminars that occupy the last couple of
lectures. The essays are discussed together, with students giving feedback to
each other. Through writing an essay the student also gains an already deeper
understanding of one of the topics within philosophy of mind. The participants
are further expected to read each other’s course essays, thus widening their understanding of the area.
The essays can be written in English or in Swedish.

Description
Our relationship to ourselves seems special. While I certainly learn things about
myself in the same way that I learn things about trees outside in the park, or of
people in my family, or faraway cultures, it has seemed to many that some things
about ourselves are available to us in a special way. Arguably, I am the only person
in the world that knows when and how much it hurts in my back, infallibly or incorrigibly, without having to do any extra work to gain this knowledge. It also
seems that no-one can challenge that I am in pain, that today's wind feels cold to
me, or that I am the sole person to be likely to know, without reporting it, which
thought I entertained when just entering the library. I have a first-personal authority over at least some of my mental states. Within history of philosophy, this kind of

immediate relationship has sometimes been lifted to a privileged and fundamental
position within a given epistemological theory as a whole.
The course is a course on self-knowledge as an epistemological phenomenon: on
what today is most frequently called 'self-knowledge' within a broadly analytical
approach; on different theories on self-knowledge; on whether self-knowledge as
knowledge of one's own mental states is special, and what this specialty possibly
could involve. We will also attempt to differentiate self-knowledge understood in
this way from other, related concepts like that of self-awareness.
The students are asked to register by an email to [email protected], by
January the 26th, 2015 (late registrations are accepted, but it will be informative,
for structuring the course, to know approximately how many we are).

The course book is Brie Gerler 2011 Self-Knowledge. New Problems of Philosophy. Routledge. The contents of the book will be presented and discussed in and
through the lectures. Some additional articles will be provided as a study

Aristotle's Nicomachean ethics: Happiness, virtue and character

Aristotle's ethics is perhaps one the most influential heritages of ancient philosophy. His ethics have had an enormous influence on late ancient, medieval and
contemporary philosophy. His account of happiness, or well-being (eudaimonia), of virtue, practical rationality, as well as education and characterformation enjoys continued interest among moral philosophers today. In the
course we will read Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, his most mature and extensive treatise on morality. It is often considered to be one of the most important
works ever written about ethics.
We will begin with a short introduction to the book, its place within Aristotle's whole corpus, its structure and central methodology, central notions, and
the conception of ethical inquiry arising in it. We will discuss the nature of ethical inquiry and its relationship to other "sciences" or epistemai.

The main part of the course concerns Aristotle's account of the virtues:
What is the human good? Why ought we to see happiness as virtuous activity?
How can virtue be defined? How do we account for the their variety? What is
the relation between virtue and the different parts of human soul? How is virtue
acquired? What is the cognitive and conative component of the virtues? What is
the role of pleasure in virtue? What is the difference between intellectual and
moral virtue? Are different virtues connected? What are the relation between
moral character and practical wisdom (phronêsis)? What is the role of contemplation in happiness? We will also discuss Aristotle's account of some specific
virtues, such as moderation, justice and practical wisdom.
The seminars will focus on some of these questions and on different interpretations (found in the secondary literature) of Aristotle's account of virtues.
