reminders that we all need to be
prepared for what winter can bring.
Please feel free to contact the Herrington
North Marina Office if you have any
questions about scheduling your storage
and service needs. Copies of the 2010
Winter Work Request are available
in each Marina Office and online. A
few basic winter storage reminders to
assist you in your planning include:
• Schedule your haul-out and winter
projects early to ensure you get a
schedule that suits your needs.
• Check your boat regularly during the
winter season.
• Roller furling headsails need to be
removed prior to haul-out. Please
plan on doing this upon delivery of
the boat.
• Remove your drain plug.
Land storage at Herrington North is available all year round.
• Don’t tie boat covers or ladders to
jack stands.
• Secure your ladder to the keel blocks if you leave it at the boat.
• Remove any loose items from the deck and store them down below or at home.
• Space heaters used for freeze protection are strictly prohibited. It is recommended that you properly
winterize your boat.

s we review our plans for 2011 slip rentals, we
would like to remind you of our Slip Referral
Program for both marinas (referrals must be in the
same calendar year):
• One referral receives $100 Harbour Dollars and 4
novelty cocktail glasses.

To make it enjoyable for everyone, consider creating a
theme with a few boat decorations. Turn on some nice
music and set out some snacks that are easy to serve
on the boat. Satisfy your hungry guests with shrimp
dip, cheese/salami and crackers, bbq chicken wings,
chicken salad, snack/nut mix, drinks and dessert.

this season at Herrington Harbour Marinas including: slipholder only
parties and breakfasts, outdoor movie nights, docking challenges and three
boating seminars. The events, as well as the physical improvements to
the marinas each year, create an enhanced experience that is unparalleled
throughout the Bay.
Given the large numbers of slipholders at these events, it is evident that
this is part of the boating lifestyle that you enjoy and we will continue to
deliver that experience. We thank you for reflecting your opinions of the
marinas in the Chesapeake Bay Magazine “Best of the Bay” annual survey.
We will continue to identify new opportunities while working diligently to
provide the best value on the Bay.
Growing Oysters for Restoration
by V-dock, glance over and you

buoyant oyster cultivation systems.
Each drum contains approximately 3,000 spat (baby
oysters) that are almost a year old. The tide rotates
the drum allowing the flow of water and food, and
eliminates the development of fouling organisms.
This tumbling promotes fast even growth and stronger

shells for superior resistance to predators. When the
spat are ready, they will be transplanted to a permanent
location in the Marina.

Fall Boating on the Chesapeake Upcoming Slipholder Seminars
I
t is that time of year again when the true beauty of
the Chesapeake comes into full focus. The water
remains warm deep into the season adding a degree
of comfort to our boating experience even as the air
turns crisp and clear. Our favorite anchorages that
bustle with activity during the summer are suddenly
our private refuges, shared only with the heavy flocks
of geese and ducks that call the Bay home once the
kids go back to school. The shorelines explode in color
adding depth to the scenery as the trees change colors
and the marsh grasses shine like a golden blanket along
the edge of the creeks. Gone is the humidity of summer
nights, replaced by a pure and crisp breeze that carries
with it the delicate flavors of the region’s harvests. This
is absolutely the Bay’s magical season and I strongly
encourage you to take advantage of it by scheduling
a late season cruise to your favorite anchorages. You
will not be disappointed.

Atlantic Spars & Rigging
The Benefits of Mast Removal
Removing your mast before months of winter
storage is beneficial for the hull, mast and rigging.
We can perform general rigging inspections in the air,
but there are many critical rigging and mast fittings
that cannot be removed for further inspection unless
the mast is off. Once it is removed, we will have the
opportunity to:
• replace sheaves.
• replace or improve mast lights and electrical wiring.
• take apart rod rigging and inspect rod heads (it’s
recommended that they are re-headed every ten
years).
• apply a new Awlgrip paint finish to stop or prevent
corrosion of vital mast components.
• upgrade electronics and replace the masthead
sending unit and cable.
We also have the most complete custom metal
fabrication shop in the area that fabricates or repairs
railings, stanchions, tanks, pedestal rail modifications for
Nav Pods and all types of custom brackets and fittings.
South Fuel Dock
Extended stay suites are available November through March,
utilities included. Please contact us for further details. We

Extending Canvas Life
Removing the canvas from your boat in the winter
will preserve and extend its life span. Once removed,
it should be thoroughly cleaned, inspected and
repaired. A few simple rules for care include:
• Pull as close to the fastener as possible when
unsnapping your canvas. Be careful not to jerk the
canvas as this can cause damage to the fasteners.
• Use a mild lukewarm soap solution and a soft
brush to wash your canvas. Avoid harsh cleaners
or brushes, as this will shorten the life of the
fabric coatings.
• Rinse thoroughly with clean water. Never let soap
dry on canvas.
• If you need to re-treat your canvas for water
repellency see your fabric manufacturer’s
recommendations. Using harsh chemicals or the
wrong product can void the warranty.
• Never put canvas in a dryer or have it dry cleaned.
• Check for broken stitching and have it repaired as
necessary.
• When storing your canvas for the winter, make
sure it is dry and laid flat. Never fold canvas
with glass.
Dock Water
All docks at North and South will be
winterized around November 15th, weather
permitting. Land storage water stays on
year ‘round.
Professional security guards patrol Herrington Marinas 7 days
a week. Security cell phone numbers are listed in the Marina
Phone Directory for your convenience.
Osprey Marine Composites
Osprey Marine Composites was commissioned
earlier this year by Herrington South to fabricate
composite piling caps for the newly re-furbished
D-dock. This was
the type of project
that requires a
great deal of skill
and experience in
order to make the
finished product
look as if it has
always
been
there.
Osprey Marine
met the challenge
by matching the
copper
colored
caps to the new
dock
lights.
Additionally, each
individual cap was
custom sized to 64
pilings of various
sizes. In addition
to their classy
appeal, the durable
new caps will
greatly increase the
longevity of this
busy dock.

Cook’s Marine Service
Voted “Best on the Bay 2010”
There are many advantages to winter land
storage. We recommend that you haul your
boat to ensure your investment is kept safe. One
particular concern is the bilge pump system.
When the temperatures drop below freezing, the
water in the bilge can freeze. Problems that may
occur are: cracked deck scuppers, leaking valves
or hoses and bellows failure, which can flood a
boat fairly quickly. If the bilge pump is frozen,
the boat could end up with serious problems and
may even sink.
Do a cost evaluation for a haul-out and storage
for the winter and then consider that you will
have to haul out in the spring to wash, replace
zincs, paint and service, etc. The real additional
cost for a lot of boat owners is only three or four
months of land storage. That is a pretty good deal
for peace of mind.
Shrink Wrap Protection
For Your Boat
Shrink wrapping your boat not only protects
your fiberglass, hardware, vinyl and canvas, but
it prevents water and moisture from making its way
inside your boat. Trapped moisture all winter leads
to the formation of mold and can become a serious
health hazard.

scheduling with Schuman’s or Cook’s Marine.
Some companies guarantee the wrapping and
provide monthly inspections at our marinas to
ensure integrity.

After 12 years of spinning his
yarn and wild tales of the sea,
Frank Stoces has decided to
take his lovely bride Linda and
head back to the open oceans.
Frank built his Corbin 39 while
in Canada, sailed her down the
West Coast to Mexico then over
to Hawaii. On his return trip,
he decided to come through
the Panama Canal and sail the
East Coast U.S. In 1998 he
pulled into Herrington Harbour
North, took up roots and began
selling boats. He’ll be around the Yard until the end
of October so please stop by and say goodbye to a
sailor, a boat builder, an adventurer, a good friend
and a great storyteller.
