While some members provide direct service and others dedicate themselves solely to their missions of advocacy, all Community Shares members are making positive adjustments in the community. We call this commitment to change “social justice,” and it means that our members are working to develop long-term, lasting, and systemic solutions to the problems that face Northeast Ohio. “Social justice” is not just a quick fix to a difficult situation; instead, it is about discovering what is at the root of a complex problem and making a difference at that level. Mission Statement Greater Cleveland Community Shares supports social justice organizations through workplace giving programs and other philanthropic invitiatives. Highlights in Shares’ History 1985—Shares becomes the first alternative fund in the State of Ohio. The Board of Trustees elects Charles Bromley president at its first meeting. Shares raises $2,200 in its first campaign. 1989—Lana Cowell becomes Shares’ executive director. Campaign pledges top $170,000. 1991—Shares nearly doubles its number of workplace campaigns, reaching employees in 66 worksites. From the Executive Director Clevelanders are practical people. That’s why when Community Shares was founded 25 years ago it made sense to so many people who were looking for another choice in giving at their workplaces. And it made sense to the nonprofit organizations who had been excluded from payroll deduction campaigns to create a place at the table. While much has changed over the years, Community Shares’ commitment to social change and embracing long-term solutions to neighborhood problems has not wavered. Community Shares’ first campaign in 1985 raised $2,200 for its 13 charter organizations. Today we celebrate the extraordinary historical impact of nearly $15 million that has been pledged to advance long term solutions for Greater Cleveland and Ohio and the thousands of residents who have benefitted from the work of our member organizations. As support from foundations and corporations diminishes, the need for Community Shares remains more important than ever. By gathering our members together to raise funds from workplace campaigns, we make nonprofits more efficient. The vision of Shares’ first President, Charles Bromley, voiced in 1987, remains true: Community Shares is going to be part of Cleveland for the next generation. Long may it live. —Cynthia Ries Six of Community Shares’ 13 founding organizations are still members. Domestic Violence Center Heights Community Congress Housing Advocates, Inc. Housing Research & Advocacy Center Slavic Village Development Union Miles Development Corporation From the President For the past 25 years, Greater Cleveland Community Shares has offered a choice for people making charitable gifts in their workplaces. Thousands of Clevelanders have opened their hearts and their pockets to make our community stronger. Our generous donors come from all neighborhoods of this city, from law firms to schools to government, and from the young and the old. Some of our donors give $1 a week and others give $100. What is extraordinary about Shares is that every gift counts and, combined, they help promote solutions to the myriad of Cleveland’s challenges. Our member nonprofits are on the front lines to provide education, promote health care, safeguard vulnerable citizens, protect neighborhoods and homeowners, train workers, and fight discrimination. Scott Rose from ESOP takes a group of CFC employee campaign managers on tour of neighborhoods affected by foreclosure to learn more about the value of ESOP’s role in the community. All of our organizations have deep roots in the fabric of our community and address systemic causes of social problems. But none of this would be possible without our donors.Thank you. As we look back with gratitude, we look to the future and to building on the foundation of these 25 years of service and philanthropy. There is much to be accomplished and our work has never been more challenging, or more important. Community Shares is an established philanthropic partner and we celebrate the importance of social justice work to the future of Greater Cleveland. —Mary Ellen Gardner-Turner A public mural in Slavic Village is completed with the help of CFC volunteers. Highlights in Shares’ History 1994—The number of Shares organizations grows to 29 with the addition of seven new members. 1997—Shares restructures its Board of Trustees to include representation from both member nonprofits and community leadership. The Year in Review The vision that created Community Shares 25 years ago sought to embrace the many nonprofits that were excluded from workplace giving, providing them an opportunity to reach new potential donors and volunteers, and to honor individual choice in giving. That vision still inspires us today and leads us to further our mission of raising money for progressive organizations that relentlessly strive to improve our communities. We celebrate many accomplishments this year, including: • • • • • • • Welcoming two new members, IRTF and InterAct Cleveland, bringing our membership to 38 nonprofit organizations. Recognizing social justice activism through six awards at our annual Power Lunch. Providing operating support to 107 nonprofit organizations throughout Ohio, including our membership, our three sister federations in Ohio, and non-member organizations, totaling $989,511. Managing the State of Ohio Combined Charitable Campaign for ourselves and our three sister organizations: Community Shares of Greater Cincinnati (representing 28 member organizations), Northwest Ohio Community Shares (23 member organizations), and Community Shares of Mid Ohio (60 member organizations). Donors pledged a total of $367,987 for the four federations. Through our members, reaching 280,000 people in direct services and an additional 91,000 people with advocacy and long-term solutions. Thanks to the efforts of Shares YP, increasing friends and supporters among the young professionals in Cleveland. Our under-40 YP group raised funds and awareness for Shares with several events, including a Bingo Brunch at Tremont’s Prosperity Social Club and Justice Rocks! A Concert for a Cause at the Beachland Tavern in North Collinwood. Many thanks to the four bands who donated their time and talent to the cause: Tastycakes, oldboy, Early Girl, and Vitium. Kicking off Campaign 2009 with a series of fun events. In addition to the Shares YP happenings, Movie Night at the newly renovated Capitol Theatre in Gordon Square Arts District, Shares Night Out with the Lake Erie Monsters, and phil-an-thro-pi-a, the community-wide fundraiser sponsored by Executive Caterers at Landerhaven, brought new audiences together and offered “something for everyone.” Community Shares is grateful for the dedication and passion that employee campaign managers commit to making their campaigns successful. These volunteer leaders recognize the value in giving and go beyond the call of duty to make each campaign fun and rewarding. They creatively promote the power of participation in philanthropy. Mayor Frank Jackson Photo Credit: Clare Russell/City of Cleveland Photographic Bureau Mayor Frank Jackson launched the City of Cleveland Campaign at City Hall in September. Shares has been part of this important campaign since 2002, and it has grown to be our largest. Our thanks to Tom Antonello and the many employee campaign managers who coordinate campaign activities in all City departments. This year employees generously pledged more than $69,000 to our member organizations. The North Coast Combined Federal Campaign (NCCFC) is the annual fundraising drive conducted by federal employees in their workplaces each fall. Employees from the various federal agencies act as campaign managers and participated in events Shares hosted in 2009 to educate them about our member organizations. A Lolly the Trolly tour through Cleveland neighborhoods hard hit by the foreclosure crisis, narrated by ESOP’s staff, was followed by a lunch and discussion of the difficult issues presented. Two other events were held for the CFC’s Day of Caring, giving the campaign managers a chance to volunteer. One group spent an afternoon working at Habitat for Humanity’s Re-Store. Another worked with local artists Noah Hrbek and Alex Nosse, painting a public mural along the Morgana Trail Run in Slavic Village. Tucker Ellis & West’s Campaign reached a new high of 65 donors, up from 45 in 2008. Under the leadership of campaign manager Jill Filicko, donations increased 45 percent. Tucker Ellis & West has the distinction of pioneering Shares’ first online giving campaign in 2007. The Cleveland Heights-University Heights Schools Campaign continues to make giving fun and meaningful. Superintendent Heuer showed his support by saying a few words of encouragement at the kickoff meeting. The campaign, managed by Community Shares, includes United Way and UNCF and raised $13,082 for the three federations. Each school devises creative ways to involve their students and staff. Canterbury Elementary Principal Kevin Harrell and Brenda Gadowski, with her team, brought parents and students together to celebrate their generosity with a basketball competition between students and staff—the students won! Many thanks to all of the Employee Campaign Managers, their teams, and our donors for another successful campaign year. 2009 Pledges this year were $1,077,909. In addition to the many donors, too numerous to list, who gave through workplace campaigns, we thank those who contributed individually to Shares.
