Welcome to Hershey!
This booklet was organized by the Graduate Student Association (GSA) and the
Postdoctoral Society to help you get acquainted with your new home. Please take time to
flip through this booklet as it offers important campus phone numbers, directions to
nearby places of interest, and our favorite local restaurants and bars. This booklet is by
no means comprehensive, so if there is something you cannot find please ask around or
feel free to contact any GSA officer. We will gladly help! If you have any suggestions
for information to be added to next year’s version, please let us know.

Guide to Harrisburg
2nd Street:
Explore downtown Harrisburg for places to eat and hang out. There are lots of restaurants, a few dance
clubs, martini bars and plenty of just regular old bars. Most places are directly on Second Street, but you can
also go off onto the side streets to find some other fun places to hang out. To get there, take 322 West, which
turns into 83 South, and take the exit for 2nd Street. There is parking on the street, but make sure that you
feed the meters if you are there on weekdays. There are also several parking garages nearby. Below is a
short list of some of the bars and restaurants on 2nd street.
Bourbon Street Station – New Orleans Bar
Brickhaus – German Restaurant / Bar
Cabana’s – Reggae/Beach Bar
Dragonfly – Dance Club
Eclipse / Hardware Bar – Dance club / Lounge / Bar
Firehouse – Restaurant
KoKoMos – Sports Bar
Mars – Martini Bar
McGrath’s – Irish Pub
Molly Brannigans – Irish Bar
Spice – Restaurant and Bar
Stocks on 2nd – Restaurant and Bar
Zembies – Sports Bar
City Island:
If you go to downtown Harrisburg and make a left onto Market Street you’ll find yourself on a bridge that
leads to City Island and an area called Wormleysburg. Besides the exciting miniature golf course, the
stadium for the Harrisburg Senators (minor league baseball) is located there and outdoor music & food
festivals are held there during the summer. http://www.harrisburgpa.gov/parksRec/cityIsland/
"The City Islanders" is a professional soccer team that plays on City Island in Harrisburg. The website for
the team is www.cityislanders.com. Tickets to the game are fairly cheap.
RiverSide:
To get to the RiverSide/Wormleysburg area, follow the directions above to get to the Market Street Bridge
but go completely to the end of the bridge and then make a right. There are a few restaurants directly on the
river in Wormleysburg. Most of these restaurants have outdoor bars and decks that are nice during the
summertime. A few names you may hear on the radio are Dukes on the River, Catalano’s, and Cronies.

On behalf of the Penn State College of Medicine and Hershey Medical Center, we welcome you to
PennState Hershey.
The mission of the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs is to support the training and education of postdoctoral
fellows and scholars in the College of Medicine and their faculty advisors.
The goals of the Office are to:
• serve as a central resource of information for postdoctoral fellows and scholars.
• serve as a source of advocacy for postdoctoral issues and to advance institutional initiatives
concerning postdoctoral fellows and scholars.
• develop and administer institutional policies for postdoctoral fellows and scholars.
• provide professional development and informational programs targeted to postdoctoral fellows
and scholars.
• provide support for the Hershey Chapter of the Penn State Postdoctoral Society and activities
such as Data & Dine.
• provide resources for faculty engaged in postdoctoral training.
• be a national model for professional development of postdoctoral trainees.
We provide orientation sessions and professional development workshops specifically for postdoctoral
fellows and scholars: topics include looking for a position, career goal setting, grant-writing,
presentation skills, poster preparation, and taxes for international scholars.
Look for announcements for upcoming sessions!
Postdoctoral appointments at Penn State are guided by Penn State Policy HR68: you should become
familiar with this policy (http://guru.psu.edu/policies/OHR/hr68.html). The faculty of the College of
Medicine have also endorsed the AAMC Compact Between Postdoctoral Appointees and Their Mentors
(http://www.aamc.org/research/postdoccompact/start.htm).
Penn State is an institutional member of the National Postdoctoral Association.
We strongly encourage you to use the training opportunities here to enhance your future careers. A key
aspect is goal setting and career planning. We recommend that you discuss your career goals with your
advisor and establish an Individual Development Plan (IDP): you can download a template for an IDP
from the FASEB website (http://opa.faseb.org/pdf/idp.pdf)
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have questions or need advice.
Again, welcome to PennState Hershey!

Penn State Postdoctoral Society (Hershey Chapter)
WELCOME TO HERSHEY!
We are excited that you have chosen Penn State University-Hershey to continue your educational
and professional training. The Penn State Postdoctoral Society’s mission is to enhance your
postdoctoral experience here at Penn State. The Hershey campus is a part of The Pennsylvania
State University (PSU). PSU has a total of 450 postdoctoral scholars and fellows university wide
with approximately 120 postdoctoral scholars and fellows located on the Hershey campus.
Our Postdoc Society has 2 chapters: Penn State Postdoctoral Society-Hershey Chapter (PSPSH)
and, and the second located at University Park at PSU’s main campus.
We help with both professional and personal development, providing workshops and information
on various topics including goal setting, grant writing, and family issues.
We also work with the Postdoctoral office to represent any and all postdoctoral issues to the
university administration.
To help with professional development and encourage social interaction, we organize two
events: Data and Dine and the Postdoc Family Picnic. Data and Dine is held in October and is
an informal opportunity for postdocs to present their research to other postdocs and Penn State
faculty while enjoying food and drinks. We invite all postdocs to present their research at this
fun and relaxed event. In late spring/early summer, we sponsor a picnic for all postdocs and
their families. We welcome you to come and enjoy a warm day and barbecue in a nearby park
with family and friends!
This society exists by and for the postdocs. We are always looking for new and motivated
members to join us to make our experience more enjoyable and represent our population. Please
do not hesitate if you wish to participate, we would love for you to join us.
The information on the following pages is specific for postdocs. While this booklet is not a
comprehensive listing of all information you will need, we hope it will provide a starting point
for you as you begin to settle into your new home.
Please feel free to contact the PSPSH or the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs with any questions or
concerns you may have.
WELCOME TO HERSHEY!

Change of Residence to Pennsylvania
For the most up to date information, please visit the state website listed below.
http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/new_residents/index.shtml
In general, you will need to apply for your new driver’s license within 60 days of moving to PA.
At this time, you can also register and re-title your vehicle(s). You will need two forms of
identification (out of state driver’s license, social security card or passport) and proof of
residency (utility bills in your name-ie: gas, electric and land-line phone service).
You will need PA vehicle insurance before you can register and re-title your vehicle(s).
Getting your license, registering and re-titling your vehicles can all be done at one location and
takes 2-3 hours depending on the “wait time”. Some locations are open on Saturdays. Please
check the website for more details.

Information for International Postdoctoral Scholars/Fellows
Before you arrive…
VISA
Human Resources (HR) will be in contact with you regarding all paperwork and
information they need from you.
When you have clearance from your local U.S. consulate, go ahead and schedule your
arrival in Hershey.
Depending of your country of origin, the administrative delays will vary. Do your best to
be familiar with your requirements so you can arrive in Hershey in a timely manner.

Arriving in Hershey…
You have to check in with HR within 3 (business days) following your arrival.
If possible, arrange/schedule a meeting with an HR representative (Sue Barnhart) before you
arrive.
Obtaining a Social Security Number (SSN)…
Postdocs will need to apply for a social security card in order to get paid for their work. Your
social security number is used to keep a record of your earnings.
It is very important to wait 10 days after your arrival before applying for a Social Security
Number.
- 44 -
You will need your passport, immigration documents and your appointment letter from your
institution to fill out the applications. It may take anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks to receive your
social security number. HR office should be able to help you with this application. Download a
copy of the form: http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/
Having the SSN (even w/o any card) is enough for many administrative forms (but not for
Driver’s license).
A spouse on J2 visa is not eligible for a SSN unless she/he has a work permit. A letter stating
that they are not eligible can be used to get a driver’s license.

Obtaining your PA driver’s license (DL)…
What to bring ? requirements for non US citizens
You will also need:
your actual SSN CARD
a letter from HR or your department saying that you’ll be here for at least a year;
ask for this letter at your HR appointment
IF: you have a foreign DL
You could drive for a couple of months with an international driver’s license. The duration will
vary depending on your country of origin or visa; from 3 months to 1 year. You should always
check your specific requirements.
- 45 -
A reciprocity agreement exists between the state of PA and the countries of France and
Germany. This agreement allows a French and German citizen to transfer their valid noncommercial driver’s license without any test. You’ll have to give back your national driver’s
license in exchange of a PA one. Your home country has to give the green light (enough point on
your license for example, no fine pending…) before the process can be completed. Can take up
to 3 to 4 weeks depending on the administration and you can drive with your international DL
when your application is pending.
ANY OTHER has to apply to a Pennsylvania learner’s permit
For information regarding the Learners permit, please click here: Learner's permit
Then you could apply for test. The practical test has to be in a car that is registered to someone
that has a valid PA DL and insurance papers. **Note: Taxi Cab drivers will not allow you to use
their taxi for this test.
For the up to date information regarding obtaining your PA drivers license please visit:
http://www.dmv.state.pa.us
Additional Resources:
PA drivers manual: PA drivers manual
DMV PA website:
http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/new_residents/index.shtml
Opening an US bank account…
You will need a valid US address, your usual papers (passport, visa, DS…) and your SSN card.
It could take up to 3 weeks for HR to process your financial information and the first paycheck
could be a check instead of a direct deposit.
For a list of local banks, please see “Information for ALL Postdoctoral Scholars/Fellows”.
Living in the U.S.
Credit History
If this is your first visit to the U.S., you do not have credit history. It is important to start
building your credit history as soon as possible. Credit history is required for most items
including: renting an apartment, buying a car or house and obtaining utilites at your place of
residence.
- 46 -
Your credit score (or absence of it) is important in determining your car loan rate, insurance rate
or even your phone bill or your rent!
To begin building your credit history, you may want to consider applying for department store
credit cards like Gap, Old Navy, LL Bean, etc. Once you have your first credit card, you can
start building credit history.
You may also want to consider getting a VISA or Mastercard. All major credit card companies
have options for individuals with limited credit history.
NOTE: please read all the conditions and terms of the credit card before signing up. Not
all credit cards are the same: some have an annual fee (money paid just for having the
credit card) and higher interest rates.
Finding a place to live: Renting an apartment
You will need to find a place to live. If you are just arriving in the US, and do not have
transportation, you may want to consider living on campus for a few months.
Furnished Apartments are being kept aside for international students. It was noted that a lot of
international students who arrived initially find it hard to get all the furniture and many of them
feel having a furnished apartments for the first few months would have been helpful.
University Manor East on-campus 717-533-8210
http://www.hmc.psu.edu/housing/tenant/apts.htm
One-bedroom apartments are available to one single student, married students with no
children, or two (2) domestic partners with no children.
Two-bedroom apartments are available to two single students, married students with or
without one (1) child, or two (2) domestic partners with or without one (1) child. Threebedroom apartments are available only to married students with two (2) to three (3)
children, or two (2) domestic partners with two (2) to three (3) children.
University Manor West on-campus 717-533-8210
Four-bedroom apartments are assigned to four single adult applicants. The four-bedroom
apartments are typically reserved for Nursing students; short-term individuals and
students; and occasionally used as temporary overflow space for Medical and Graduate
students, not initially accommodated in Manor East.
You may also choose to live off-campus. Listings of some of the local apartments are located in
the Hershey General information section of this book. When applying for an apartment, be sure
to have all information with you. Some apartment complexes have required:
1) Proof of payment for the last 3 to 6 months.
2) How much money you have in your foreign bank account –certificate from the
bank that you are not a credit risk.
- 47 -
3) Proof of marriage or wedding arrangements if applying jointly with your
partner.
4) Copy of your employment offer letter from PSU stating your salary and length
of appointment.
Each apartment complex will have different requirements. It is important to meet with the
leasing agent regarding your application. If you have no credit or limited credit history, it may
be difficult to get an apartment. You may be expected to pay a higher renter’s deposit or supply
additional information.
Expect to pay “deposits” upfront
Most utility companies require a credit history. If you do not have a credit history, you can still
get service, however, you may be asked for a deposit before the service begins.
For instance:
Verizon phone service asked for $150- $300 per line. If you do not have any incident (no
late payments) they begin to reimburse you 12 months after the first bill.
Comcast Cable (landline phone, TV, internet) will ask for a deposit
PPL Electric Utility Corporation (electricity) may waive some deposit fees
UGI (gas company) may require a deposit, additional installment fees may apply.
Please be aware that companies may ask for these deposits upfront. These may total $1,000
or more.
Car insurance
If you are buying a car, you’ll need a proof of car insurance.
Progressive Auto Insurance will insure a person with a foreign driver’s license.
Even if you already have your PA DL when buying your car, insurance payments are due
every 6 months and can be very expensive since you do not have any driving or credit history
in the US ($1000 and up for 6 months).
As the time passes and you get your PA DL, your payment amount will come down. If
you get the DL during the first 6 months you could ask for a price decrease. They usually
reimburse you of some expenses. After this first 6 months you could shop around for
better rates.

Furniture
There are many different shops around here that sell furniture ranging from everyday to high-end
luxury items. You can find every day items at Target, Kmart and Wal-mart inexpensively. (For
locations, see General Hershey Information).
Other stores include Boscov’s outlet at Capital City Mall, (from the least expensive to the most)
Ollie’s Outlet,Value City furniture, Sofa Selections, NB Liebmann and Ethan Allen in the
Colonial Park area (Route 22)
The nearest IKEA stores are in Baltimore, MD and Philadelphia. A 90 min to 2h drive depending
on the traffic.
All around HMC, bulletin boards are posted with advertisements from people selling items
because they are leaving the area. You may also receive information about furniture for sale from
the postdoc listserv.
Some website could help you find second hand goods in a more or less good shape. Some will be
even free but you’ll have to haul

English help
Some associations are offering English Class for ESL (English as a Second Language). Most are
through church programs so you have to be comfortable with religion being part of the class.
They also have children programs and support groups for a spouse that is currently at home.
HomeAwayFromHome
HACC (Harrisburg Community College) have ESL class but this is a year-long
enrollment/commitment that may not be compatible with a full-time postdoctoral position. It is
best to ask your advisor for permission/advice.
HACC ESL program
Susan Newell has also offered her services for a fee (717-533-0347). She is local and comes
highly recommended. Please see Kathy Simon (C1712) for additional information.
You may also be able to find a private tutor, however, you will need to ask around.
