Dear Parents and Friends,
Next week will be a ‘really big week’ at school – despite it being a short one due to the Canberra Day public
holiday on Monday! As well as being Canberra’s Centenary Celebration week it is also Catholic Schools Week.
The theme for this year is ‘EVERY CHILD COUNTS’. This theme reminds the community that every student in
Australia deserves a good education. The theme ties into our Catholic schools' philosophy of individualised
learning, and provides good links to fundraising, social justice opportunities and scriptural themes. We have
organised some special events to showcase the great work that is done in Catholic Schools and to acknowledge
the wonderful contribution that Catholic Schools have made to the Canberra Community.
These are as follows:
Date:
Time:
Event:
Tuesday
12th March
9.30am
Values Liturgy – whole school in the hall (hosted by Years3/4)
11.00am
Canberra Centenary Cupcake Celebration and viewing of the ‘Toast to
Canberra’ – whole school in the hall
All day
World of Maths incursion – staggered class times throughout the day in
the hall
12.00 –
1.20pm
Boys’ and Girls’ Club (Years 4-6) – various locations throughout the school
6.00pm
Disco – in the school hall.
Two sessions: 6.00-7.15pm for Yrs K-2
and 7.30-9.00pm for Yrs 3-6.
Friday
15th March
Parents are very welcome to join us for the above events. In fact, support is needed for Boys’ and Girls’ Club
and the Disco and a separate note was sent home about these so that parents could indicate their ability to
assist. Any support you can offer will be very much appreciated.
Boys’/Girls’ Clubs
On Friday of next week, the first of our Boys’/Girls’ Clubs will be held for the year. These happen twice per
term for students in Years 4-6 for Terms 1-3 and for students in Years 3-6 in Term 4. A note was sent home
last week asking for parent help with the groups but, as yet, the responses have been few. These groups are
very difficult to run without the support of parents. Please consider lending your
expertise and/or your time. I can assure you that the children will be eternally grateful!
Centenary Mass
Yesterday, our ACT Catholic Schools gathered to celebrate Canberra’s Centenary with a special Centenary
Mass. The Mass was celebrated at St Christopher’s Cathedral at 4.45pm. Although we don’t have a Catholic
school dating back to 1913, our first local Catholic School, Saint Christopher’s Primary School, did begin in
Manuka in 1928. This is now the site of the Catholic Education Office opposite the Cathedral. Several
members of our staff, parent and student body were present at the Mass yesterday, along with several
dignitaries, priests and politicians, to celebrate the contribution of Catholic Education to the Canberra
community. Two of our school leaders, Bridgette Mullamphy and Bronte Woodward, carried the school banner
in the procession and two staff members, Mr Davies and Mrs Mullamphy sang as part of the choir. I thank
these children and staff members for their contributions to this historically significant occasion. There was a
wonderful feeling, generated by this gathering, of ‘belonging to something much bigger’ and it was great to
welcome our newest teachers into the fold through a commissioning ceremony as part of the Mass. I extend
sincere thanks and congratulations to the Catholic Education Office for hosting this extraordinary event
celebrating the history of our Catholic Schools in Canberra.

Prayer for Catholic Schools Week:
Dear Lord
Catholic Schools Week is a special time in the year when we celebrate the extraordinary achievements of our Catholic
schools. It is a time to give thanks for the wonderful teaching and learning that takes place each day in every classroom.
We acknowledge and thank all who work in the service of Catholic education to create the opportunities for students that
allow them to grow and thrive.
We thank you for:
the wisdom and understanding of teachers
the enthusiasm and energy of students
the leadership of school Principals and executive staff
the skill, care and commitment of administrative and support staff
the guidance of our pastors and religious leaders
the support and partnership of parents, carers and local communities.
We pray that each student’s learning journey be inspired by a search for your wisdom and truth.
We pray that we never take for granted the learning opportunities that we have all been given, and that we use the gifts
of learning wisely and responsibly.
We ask that we use what we have learnt to create a better world for all people, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever
and ever.
Amen
Every child counts!
RE NEWS
Next week is Catholic Schools week . This year’s theme
is ’Every Child Counts’. Catholic Schools Week is a
time when we look to recognise, acknowledge and
observe some of the religious and cultural rituals and
festivals that make our Catholic School a rich and
vibrant learning community.
We will be celebrating our Values Liturgy with an
emphasis on Catholic Schools Week at 9:30am on
Tuesday. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The Gospel story this week, the Parable of the Barren
Fig Tree (Lk 13: 1-9), was quite a challenge to the
people of Jesus’ time. Religious observance meant
following strict rules with no second chances. Jesus
came to change that, showing us that following God is
a life of love, not punishment; God will always love
us– despite our failings.
This week take time to reflect on your journey this
Lent, following Jesus. Thank God for the second
chances you have been given.
A REMINDER that if you would like your child to
receive a Sacrament this year, you must fill in an
enrolment form which can be found in the Parish
Bulletins randomly over the next 4 weeks.
Have a great week!

Thank you to all who attended the
Community Meeting of the Council on
Tuesday. The Community Meeting is a time
for the whole school community to come
together to have their say about the future
of the school and to discuss any ideas or suggestions
they may have for the Executive Council.
We would also like to thank those who have volunteered
to be part of one of our four Focus Groups: Pastoral
Care, Environment, Communications and Events &
Fundraising. At the parent information evening, three
weeks ago, some parents were kind enough to put their
phone numbers down under the group they were
interested in assisting. If you were one of those parents,
or are just keen to help in any way you can, please email
me at: [email protected] with your
contact details and email address if you haven’t already
done so, as we find it’s easier to communicate with
groups via email rather than phone. Please feel free to
contact the Community Council by email (as above) or
personally if you have any ideas or suggestions for our
school.

Camp Birrigai
On the first day of camp we got to do the crate climb. I was lucky enough to go first with
Matilda. The aim of the game was that there were two people in harnesses and the
rest of the team were helpers and you had to make a crate stack in under five minutes.
My record was nine crates.
The second day at Birrigai was one of my favourite because we got to do vertical
playpen and abseiling. Vertical playpen was a climbing activity which was a high
climbing obstacle course. It was so much fun I was so close to reaching the top. The
abseiling was the scariest activity but it was also
the most exciting.
On the third day we did the giant swing and frog
rescue. The giant swing was my favourite activity. It
included a rope team, ladder team and the
Swinger. We also did frog rescue. After we did one
more activity it was time to go back to school. We
tidied our cabin and said bye to Birrigai, When we
got to school our parents were there. I had a great
time at Birrigai.
Bronte Woodward (Y5/6CA)
Camp Longbeach
On Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th February Year Five went on camp to Longbeach. My
three favourite parts were the beach carnival, the campfire and playing the Priest in the
Parish.
The beach carnival was held on Tuesday. We did lots of different activities and some of
them were boogie board races and sand castle building.
My second favourite activity was sitting around the campfire. Even though we didn’t tell
scary stories we did roast marshmallows. We also talked about what we would like to
achieve this year.
My final favourite activity was playing the game Priest
in the Parish. It was really great fun because you had to
respond really fast or else you had to go to the back.
Also when you got to the front you won a jelly bean. In
the end I won two jelly beans.
There were lots of other activities too like a hunt for
man made objects, raft building and a spider web
game.
