TOWNSHIP H A L L DAYS
Dearborn was not always the
name for the township; in fact, it
was not even the original name.
During the early years of Dearborn
Township's colorful history, numerous changes took place concerning both its size and name. When
the township was laid out by Governor Lewis Cass, October 23, 1824,
it was called Bucklin in honor of
William Bucklin, resident land
owner, famous tavern keeper, and
pioneer justice of the peace. It is
said that William Bucklin offered
to act as township clerk without
pay, on condition that the township
bear his name. The first township
organization meeting was held May
28, 1827, in a schoolhouse near the
site of the present Dearborn Township Hall; and, since there are no
existing records indicating an organized form of local government
prior to that date, it may assumed
that this was the beginning of
township government for Dearborn,
In 1829, Bucklin Township was
divided into two parts and names
were sought for the newly created
townships. According to some of
the old timers of the area, the government surveyors had a practice
of naming the geographical sections after important citizens. It so
happened that the important citizens whose names were to be given
to the townships were members of
the wrong political party. After receiving a great deal of criticism,
the surveyors retaliated by using
the Chinese names of Nankin and
Jenkin. Although the name of Nankin remains still, Pekin was shortlived; and, in 1833, the name was
changed to Bedford. In the same
year the southern half of Redford
Township was named Dearborn
Township in honor of Henry Dearborn, a distinguished United States
General in the Revolutionary War
and War of 1812. In 1834, Dearborn
was re-named Bucklin, but in 1836
the name was again changed to
Dearborn, and this time to stay.

E A R L Y TOWNSHIP L I F E
Present inhabitants of the Township may wonder about living conditions during the first years of its
existance, what kind of problems
confronted the officials, and what
caliber of men were elected township leaders. In order to answer
these questions one needs only to
examine the early township minutes, the United States Census reports, and articles found in newspapers existing at the time of the
townships birth.
At the time Dearborn Township
was organized the few settlers
within its boundaries were mostly
French-Canadian. The once powerful Red Men no longer ruled the
forest, although small bands of
Pottawatomie and Ottawa, refusing to give up their cherished
homeland, occasionally c a m p e d
along the banks of the River
Rouge. The majority of the white
inhabitants lived in small cabins,
were constantly pestered by mosquitoes from the forest and nearby swamps, and made good use of
the soil which was excellent for
g a r d e n products. Watermelons
grew in abundance and were marketed in Detroit at a good profit;
and, potatoes were so plentiful that
they sold for twenty-five cents a
bushel.
The township settlers
boasted of having the best apples
and onions in the country. The area
also abounded in game of all kinds,
most numerous being deer, bears,
wolves and wild turkey. Plentiful
too were sweets in the forests, for
maple trees were so numerous that
many early families made hundreds of pounds of maple sugar
every year. Wild bees were also
common and furnished the honey
luxury to these township pioneers.

POPULATION AND
EARLY GROWTH
The exact number of residents
cannot positively be determined;
however, the first election returns
ever to be recorded for the township July 9, 1827, offer a basis for
population estimates. A total of 72
votes were cast at that election,
which would indicate that no more
than 300 persons were living in
Dearborn Township at the time of
its organization. On September 10,
1840, the census reported 1,249 as
the total population for the township, and stated that 283 persons
were engaged in agriculture, 40 in
manufacturing and trade, 10 in
commerce, 5 in learned professions,
2 war pensioners,- and 1 person in
navigation. The Village of Dearbornville was well on its way by
this time to becoming the state's
fourth largest city. According to an
article appearing in the Michigan
State Gazateer for 1838 the following was a description of Dearbornville then;
"Here is a church for the Methodist, erected, a sawmill with double saws, flour mill with two run
of stones, 7 stores, 2 smitheries,
and a foundry for iron, propelled
by horse power, a physician and
about 60 families.
Here is located the United States
Arsenal. This was commenced in
1833 and completed in 1937 . . ."
During these early years both
the township and Dearbornville increased in population very slowly;
and, even in 1857 we find that only
198 votes were cast for township
supervisor. Most astounding, however, is the comparison of a report
about Dearbornville for 1875 with
that printed in 1838. Almost forty
years later the village could still
boast only an arsenal, a sawmill, a
flour mill, seven stores, two blacksmith shops, an iron foundry and
a population of about 60 families.
-28-
Since so few persons were living
within the township boundaries,
and the majority of these being engaged in farming, it may be wondered what type of problems concerned the officials during those
early years. They were concerned,
of course, with the general problems of financing the government,
laying out and repairing roads, the
construction and repair of bridges,
providing schools, and enforcing
the few existing regulations. However, after a careful examination
of the minutes of the early township meetings, it becomes apparent
that year after year the officials
were concerned with problems like
maintenance of the poor, building a
pound, eliminating wolves, and restraining stallions, boars, rams and
cattle from running at large.
A t the first township meeting
held in 1827 it is interesting to note
that among the officials named
were those of "pathfinders" and
"fence viewers". A t this meeting
the township leaders went right to
work and voted that fifty dollars
be raised for the maintenance of
the poor, and ten dollars for building a pound. However, at the second township meeting it was voted
that the money raised for building
a pound should be appropriated to
defray town expenses, and also at
that meeting the vote was unanimous against building a poorhouse.
During the remainder of the early
township meetings the pound and
poorhouse problems had to be dealt
with year after year.
Below appear a few quotations
from the early minutes of Dearborn Township which offer quite a
contrast to some of the preplexing
township problems of today.
1835 — Resolved that two dollars
be paid for every wolf's scalp
killed in the town by an inhabitant of the town.

TOWN MEETING DAYS
The township's story these early
years with its seemingly strange
problems, unfamiliar offices, and
meager population may appear of
little importance to township residents of today, and probably even
in those days, a little dull. To think
so would be a mistake and an injustice to the township fathers. The
peaple even took their politics
very seriously, and out of their
elections emerged men well qualified to guide their community and
to cope with the difficult problems
of the time. Such men as William
Bucklin, Conrad Ten Eyck, Joshua
Howard, William Daly, William
Nowlin, Samuel P. Duffield, Edward S. Snow and Titus Dort are
-29-
only a few of the many distinguished men offering their services
to the township in its infancy.
The town meeting was an important event in those early days,
and nearly all of the men in the
township were on hand for the
greater part of the clay, along with
all of the boys who by hook or
crook could pet away from home.
Mr. F . A . Gulley, one of the participants of these town meetings,
wrote the following description of
the all important affair:
"Those were the good old days.
Whiskey was cheap, a considerable
part of the voters were Irish and
the combination brought about the
usual result, but the Irish were by
no means alone in getting well 'lit
up'; before the days was over the
town became lively and noisy."
M r . Gulley also wrote of another
political event that resulted in a
great deal of township celebration:
"Another very important event
in the township in those days of
equal importance with the town
meeting, in fact the town meeting
was a puritan Sunday in comparison, was the biennial Wayne
County Democratic convention, to
nominate county officials for the
ensuing two years.
Dray loads of refreshments in
kegs and bottles came from Deti oit — Why they held this convention in Dearborn I never learned.
Possibly the visitors could enjoy
greater individual freedom then if
it had been held in Detroit. There
were no policemen nor jail in Dearborn in those good times."
Of course township folks in those
days enjoyed their meetings, yet
they took them very seriously; and,
out of it all emerged the Dearborn
Township we are proud of today.
A great deal of credit and praise
must be given to those early leaders, who gave their services year
after year with little compensation.
Roads had to be laid out and constructed, bridges kept in repair,
education provided for the children, law and order put into effect; and, stallions, rams, boars and
cattle restrained from running at
large. A l l of these problems were
wisely dealt with, even the pound
was finally obtained and a poorhouse established for the county.
Dearborn and Dearborn Township today are a far cry from the
handful of people in the 1830's and
184.0's whose problems seem so trivial. However, we have their foresightedness, industry, and pioneering character to thank for the comforts, luxuries and standard of living we possess today. It is well to
look back and think — it was not
always so easy.
