Candidates’ Positions on Public Lands
by Aaron Johnson, Manager of Communications on February 23, 2016 - 3:31pm
Today, Nevada voters hold their presidential primary for the Republican Party, and last weekend was the Democrats’
turn. Nevada is unique among the early primary states because it’s a western state and, therefore, has significant public
lands. More than 80% of Nevada is owned by the federal government. As a result, the candidates have begun addressing
issues of access, development and the transfer of public lands.
We compiled a brief list of recent statements as well as legislative and voting records of most candidates, where
applicable. I hope you will take a close look at their position...

#KeepItInTheGround and Misguided Utah Bidders
by Kathleen Sgamma, Vice President of Government and Public Affairs on February 22, 2016 - 8:59am
Ever since President Obama handed a major victory to the environmental lobby by
denying TransCanada’s application to build the Keystone XL pipeline, Big Green needed a new fight. The answer,
announced within weeks, was the Keep-It-in-the-Ground movement, aimed at not developing any oil, natural...

#KeepItInTheGround and the “Better Call Saul” School of Protesting
by Aaron Johnson, Manager of Communications on February 11, 2016 - 2:37pm
Better Call Saul, the fictional TV series about a sleazeball lawyer, is
apparently being confused as a tutorial by Keep–It-in-the-Ground protesters. Their stunts at recent anti-oil and natural gas
protests could be mistaken for clips from the show’s...

Putting Billions in Royalties at Risk
by Kathleen Sgamma, Vice President of Government and Public Affairs on February 2, 2016 - 12:02pm
The Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) proposed venting and flaring rule is a classic
case of penny wise and pound foolish. Claiming the rule is necessary to collect an additional $17 million in royalties
annually, BLM is imposing a rule with a total cost...

Environmental Lobby on the Wrong Side of Conservation
by Kathleen Sgamma, Vice President of Government and Public Affairs on January 27, 2016 - 6:38am
If you were a group with “wilderness” in your name, you would think you’d at least
seriously consider a legislative discussion draft that proposes to conserve 4.3 million acres in Utah, including nearly 2.3
million acres of wilderness, 1.8 million acres of...

by Kathleen Sgamma, Vice President of Government and Public Affairs on January 20, 2016 - 7:41am
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has proposed new regulations that
mandate stricter controls on natural gas venting and flaring. Western Energy Alliance supports the goal of capturing
greater quantities of associated gas and reducing waste gas, but a...

Interior: Taking a Page from EPA's Playbook
by Kathleen Sgamma, Vice President of Government and Public Affairs on January 15, 2016 - 11:04am
The stories of NRDC, the Sierra Club and other members of the environmental lobby basically writing Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) regulations are well known. Now the Interior Department seems to be doing the same.
In a blockbuster announcement that...

Oregon Standoff, Energy, and Federal Abuses
by Kathleen Sgamma, Vice President of Government and Public Affairs on January 8, 2016 - 12:25pm
A U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) office is being occupied by armed zealots,
and this is what the Department of the Interior, the mother agency of FWS, send out as its weekly update email: “Sparky”
the bison hit by lightning in 2013 is still going strong. Really?...

Happy Holidays and Regulatory Overreach
by Kathleen Sgamma, Vice President of Government and Public Affairs on December 18, 2015 - 7:22am
As the year draws to a close, the oil and natural gas is glad to be reaching the bottom of a tall
stack of new regulations. As we’ve documented, the Administration seems intent on using the regulatory process in a
punitive manner toward disfavored industries like coal, oil...

The Regulatory Overreach is in High Gear
by Kathleen Sgamma, Vice President of Government and Public Affairs on November 30, 2015 - 8:10am
Recently, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) granted an extension of the
comment period for onshore order 4 and reopened onshore order number 3. EPA likewise announced an extension for
four rules. While many trades and others had requested extensions to the comment periods, Western Energy Alliance
was the only...
