ABOUT FACULTY OF BIOCHEMISTRY, BIOPHYSICS
AND BIOTECHNOLOGY, JAGIELLONIAN UNIVERSITY
Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Biotechnology comprises 13 departments and 2 laboratories. A total of 104 academic
members of staff, including 19 professors, together with 40 laboratory specialists and 12 administration personnel are employed.
The teaching activities of the Faculty are concentrated within
the two degree disciplines of biotechnology and biophysics. For
the academic year 2010/2011 a new degree programme in biochemistry is to be launched. In addition, the Faculty runs post-diploma studies in molecular biology as well as a four-year PhD
programme in biochemistry and biophysics. Every year the Faculty awards approximately 70 MSc degrees and almost 20 individuals obtain a PhD degree.
Research concentrates not only on problems of biochemistry, biophysics and biotechnology, but also involves work into microbiology, immunology, virology, cell biology, plant physiology.
Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology cooperates fruitfully with over eighty Polish and foreign academic
centres. Moreover, in recent years the Faculty started to collaborate with pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry as well as
with hospitals.

culty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology (WBBiB UJ), took place from February
23rd to 27th. It was dedicated to the memory
of prof. Zygmunt Wasylewski, his work, and
scientific research.
The symposium program included 11 lecture sessions and
2 poster sessions, during which 26 lectures and 16 presentations were given, and 48 posters were displayed. The posters were assessed by prof. Grzegorz Bartosz, dr Justyna
Drukała, dr hab. Artur Jarmołowski, and prof. Mariusz Jaskólski. After a boisterous debate, the judges decided to
award the first prize to Joanna Szymak (Department of
Cell Biochemistry of WBBiB UJ), for her work entitled “Obtaining anti-ADAM17 antibody fragments (scFv) by phage
display technique”. Three other works were awarded a ‘honorable mention’: “Phenotypic heterogeneity and metastability of human lung A549 adenocarcinoma cell line” by Iga

EVGN summer school
– on the trail of endothelium in the Wolski
Forest
Between 15th and 19th September in
Przegorzały 4th EVGN (European Vascular
Genomic Network) summer school for
candidates for doctor’s degree meeting was
held. This year its motto was ‘From endothelial
formation to endothelial dysfunction – (EV)
genomics approach’. The meeting was
arranged by the Medical Biotechnology
Institute which is a member of EVGN and
gathered about 700 candidates for doctor’s
degree and 20 magnificent speakers.
The participants could listen to lectures concerning the
biology of blood vessels in many different aspects: starting
with learning the physiology of endothelium and new blood
vessels formation process, through the examinations of
molecular mechanisms of endothelium dysfunctions, to
finish with the genetic therapy of lower limb ischaemic
disease and attempts of cellular treatment of myocardial
infraction. An important element of the school was a direct
interaction of lecturers and candidates for doctor’s degree
both during stormy discussions after the lectures and
numerous but less formal meetings during the permanent
poster session and also several entertaining attractions.
The poster session had lot o viewers. Undoubtedly the
interesting results shown on posters as well as the
perspective of winning the best poster competition were an
effective bait. All of the participants voted for their favorite
poster in a secret ballot. One of the prize-winning posters
was prepared at the Medical Biotechnology Institute and it
concerned the role of heme oxygenase-1 in healing
incised wounds of skin. Despite the fact of the “winter”
weather during this summer school the atmosphere was
really warm which contributed to the integration of
lecturers and candidates for doctor’s degree.

Germany, Russia, Slovakia and Belarus.
EUROBIOTECH 2008 Congress was a continuation of a
very successful “First International Conference: Biotechnology in Agriculture EUROBIOTECH 2007”, held in Krakow
in April 2007. The subject of congress was this time dedicated to broader issues of life sciences with a special focus
on
red
biotechnology.
