where all monies are spent. Anyone can access information about our league such as: current teams,

2005 WPSL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT MEDIA GUIDE
Welcome
to the 3rd annual Women’s
Premier Soccer League National Championship
Tournament in Agawam, Massachusetts. The
tournament, set up in a knockout style bracket,
brings together each of the three division
champions (East, West, Central) along with a
wildcard team from the East.
Of course that’s not if the California Storm have
something to say about it. The Storm are this
year’s Western Division Champions and the
defending National Champions. They were 130-1 this year, their only blemish being a 0-0 tie
with the Elk Grove Pride a few weeks ago.
Twelve of the 14 games were won by a margin
of at least 2 goals.
The Eastern Division Champions for the third
year in a row and host of this year’s
Championship Tournament are the New England
Mutiny. New England went undefeated this
season, winning all 13
games for 39 points.
Eight of those were
shutouts and 9 of the 13
the Mutiny won by a
margin of at least 2 goals.
Like the Mutiny, the Storm have a roster of
exceptional players including Sissi, Maureen

Last year the Championship was won by the

hoping to repeat that scenario again this year.

Two years ago, the WPSL was given National
status and has been busy expanding ever since.
The league has added ten more teams from across
the United States: Bay State Select, Boston-North
Aztecs, Everton FC America, FC Indiana, Houston
Stars, Las Vegas Tabagators, Maryland Pride,
Massachusetts Stingers, New England Mutiny,
New Mexico Thunder, Philadelphia Pirates, Rhode

The WPSL now has

About the Team: The FC Indiana joined the WPSL as a
provisional team in the spring of 2004, and as a full member in
2005. The FC Indiana was founded to scout and develop top
soccer talent in the US.
In addition to operating its adult and youth soccer teams, FC
Indiana administers soccer camps and soccer tournaments.
FC Indiana provides a place for serious and committed players
to develop and hone their skills in a challenging and
demanding environment.
The philosophy of FC Indiana is that it is not important to be
the best in your own category at that age, but to meet
resistance every week by playing older and physically stronger
opponents. This enables those with the talent and maturity to
be ready for the first team at the age of 17, and prepares our
players for future college competition.
About the Coaching: Staff includes Shek Borkowski, Steve
Brdarski, Chris Castro, Petrana Petkova (strength and

About the Team: The Steel City Sparks are a high level women’s
soccer team from the Pittsburgh area competing in the WPSL. The
Sparks roster includes former professional players, regional players
from such schools as Pitt, Penn State, West Virginia, YSU, Duquesne
and Slippery Rock University as well as players from across the
United States and abroad.
We have give the community a team to be proud of, and to give the
youth something to aspire to. We accomplished that in our first
season by having an 8-2 record, the 4th best record of the 20 team
WPSL. Our record tied another Division winner and the wild card
team. Both our losses were at the hands of the New England Mutiny
who were undefeated during the regular season and National
Finalists that lost only in the last 30 seconds of the Championship
game.
About the Coaching: Coach van Stralen, a native of Holland,
competed on the Dutch National Team from 1994-95. She will be
entering her second year as head coach at St. Francis University this

This is the Boston-North Aztecs first year in the
Women's Premier Soccer League.
The Mass. Aztec Soccer Club is a full-scale
developmental organization with 15 premier club teams.
Including the Advanced Training, there are over 325
players that are developing their skills through the Aztec
soccer program. The organization works hard to stay on
the cutting edge of US Soccer, and we are constantly
challenging ourselves to provide the highest level of
soccer training to our players.
The 2005 season is the Elk Grove Pride’s 4th year
competing in the WPSL. The Pride finished third in the
Western Division in 2004, showing consistent
improvement each year. Starting in 2002, the Pride
consisted of primarily youth players, but in 2005 will
field an almost total college and post college roster. Elk
Grove’s youth “alums”, who competed for a national
youth title finishing 2nd in the nation in 2003 are now
playing for universities throughout the country.
Returning home for the Pride’s WPSL season, they will
be joined by players from local colleges, post college
players, and a small number of youth players.

The Maryland Pride changed ownership in mid-season
2004 when Skip Chamberlain, and Elaine Bush took over
operation of the team.
Formerly known as the Lady Bays, the team began play
in 1994 when the United Soccer Leagues (USL)
organized a pilot season to test the demand for a
national women's soccer league. The Lady Bays
advanced to the first unofficial national tournament,
where they were eliminated by Sacramento, California,
the eventual 1994 champion.

The team was formed as an indoor team 10 years ago
and as the years went by we started picking up college
players and former professional players and started
competing in an amateur league. We've won three
consecutive women's premier tournaments the last 3
years. Because of our success, we decided to join the
Women's Premier Soccer League for better competition.
Raul Reis was a Semi-Professional coach in the LASA
League and a High School girls coach for 9 years. He
has coached the Stingers the past 6 years in a women's
amateur league. Played professional indoor soccer in
the 80'S with the Chicago Shoccers in the AISA League.
Raul also played with the Kansas City Comets in the

The Philadelphia Pirates are proud to be part of the
WPSL for the upcoming 2005 Season. With the demise
of the Philadelphia Charge, this vibrant sporting city is
crying out for a top level women's soccer franchise and
the Pirates are confident they can be successful on and
off the field.
Formed in 1996, for those players that needed an
opportunity to play at a higher level, the RI Lady Rays is
the only women’s soccer franchise in Rhode Island. A
former W– League member, the Lady Rays joined the
Women’s Premier Soccer League in 2003.
With local college, graduating HS , National and
International players, once again the public of the
Greater Philadelphia area can really be confident of
supporting a community based club.

2005 WPSL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT MEDIA GUIDE
Molina backstops Mutiny into
soccer league playoffs
July 28, 2005
first. But my playing time was inconsistent because
of my commitment with the Mexican team."
By Marvin Pave, Globe Staff
Former Methuen High girls soccer
goalkeeper Jenny Molina has come a
long way and has traveled many miles since her days
as a Merrimack Valley Conference All-Star.
Molina, 24, is now keeper for both the Mexican
National Team and the Agawam-based New England
Mutiny of the Women's Premier Soccer League. With
Molina between the pipes for 10 of her team's
games, the Mutiny has posted a 13-0 final regular
season record and is hosting this weekend's league
championship playoffs.
The seven-year-old Women's Premier Soccer League,
although an amateur league, is considered the
highest level of competitive soccer for women in this
country. Many of its players are current and former
college stars and former professional players from
the former Women's United Soccer Association
(WUSA), which folded two years ago.
Born in Mexico City and raised in Methuen, Molina
has been a member of the Mexican team since 2001.
Although injured, she participated in the 2004
Summer Olympic Games in Athens (vs. Germany)
and at the Algarve Cup, a prestigious international
tournament, in Portugal last March. Molina played
four seasons at Colgate University and graduated
with honors with a bachelor's in environmental
biology.
Her family moved to Methuen when Molina was in
elementary school. Her father, Jesus, played
goalkeeper for the University of Mexico and
introduced his two children to the sport. Her mother,
Eleanor, encouraged them to play several sports. At
Methuen High, Molina earned letters in soccer,
basketball, and indoor track and was captain of the
soccer team.
Molina prepared a highlight tape that she sent to
several colleges and was pleased that her first
choice, Colgate, showed interest and offered financial
aid. ''I had a good experience there," she recalled. ''I
learned a lot and matured. It was intimidating at
Molina made the Mexican national team after her
father bumped into its coach at the Dallas airport and
inquired about a tryout for his daughter. ''They had
heard of me, but didn't know much about me," she
said. ''I made the U-19 team in Mexico City, and after
that, I made the national team, which was a mix of
all ages."
Molina said she lived mainly in Mexico City for two
years after college graduation, but also traveled to
Australia, Japan, Greece, Canada, Portugal,
Guatemala, and several other countries for
international play. Molina was voted Goalkeeper of
the Tournament in 2002 at the Gold Cup in
California, where Mexico finished third. She also
played in the World Cup qualifying matches and at
the Pan-American Games in 2003.
A highlight for Mexico and Molina was the 2004
Olympic qualifier in Costa Rica. The team upset
Canada en route to qualifying for the Olympics,
Mexico's first women's soccer appearance in the
Olympic Games. ''Beating Canada was the greatest
highlight for me and for our team," she said of the 21 victory. ''I'll remember it for the rest of my life."
Molina, whose goal is to help Mexico qualify for the
2007 World Cup and the 2008 Olympics, would like
to play professionally some day in the United States
or Europe. ''Right now, I'm not getting paid to play,"
said Molina, who is working for a Maynard-based
landscape architect. ''And I'd like to apply for
something in that field and maybe get to graduate
school by 2006, or later, if we qualify for the World
Cup and Olympics."
Molina moved back to Methuen in May after the
Mexican team's tournament schedule ended. That's
when she e-mailed several soccer teams about
playing this summer. It turned out that the Mutiny
was looking for a goalkeeper and Molina was seeking
some top competition. It has been a good fit for both
player and team.
''This is Jenny's first season with us, and she's been a
tremendous leader by example," said Mutiny head
coach Austin Daniels. ''She contacted us when she
decided to move back to Methuen. At first, we

SAN DIEGO - There are two types of athletes who
really impress me, and they are at opposite ends of
the athletic spectrum.

thought she was pulling our leg, because she had
such great credentials. But we were looking for a
goalkeeper, and her timing was perfect. When she
was at Colgate, I was coaching at the University of
Colorado, so our paths never crossed. She came to
our practice the first week of May, and her presence
and athletic ability, the way she carried herself, were
noticeable right away."
The Mutiny, under Daniels, was league playoff
semifinalist two years ago and runner-up to the
California Storm last season. Sarah Walker, a former
Yale star, was the team's keeper last year, but
moved on to play professionally in Sweden, opening
the door for Molina.
''Jenny is our only player to have Olympic Game
experience," said Daniels, ''and I'm hoping that
carries over to the playoff season as to how she
responds to the pressure. She has a very calming
influence on our team, and her parents come to all
our home games and many of our road games."
The first are young athletes; often as green as the
fields they compete on and always trying to improve
their skills. Learning is imperative to them and
because of this, they know no limits when it comes to
effort. They just love to play, which makes them the
embodiment of athletes in their purest form.
The second are older athletes, experienced veterans
if you will, who don't know the meaning of "quit"
even when conventional wisdom says they should
hang it up. They have probably lost a step or two
and their skills have probably declined over the
years, but they keep competing because their hearts
are consumed by a passion for the game and that
competitive fire still burns deep within their souls.
To find an abundance of these athletes, look no
further than the Women's Premier Soccer League, an
independent amateur league focused on the
development of highly competitive women's soccer
teams. It's the highest level of women's amateur
soccer in the country. Actually, it's the highest-level
league of national women's soccer, period, since the
WUSA folded in 2003.
She plans to eventually return to the Mexican
national team, but will take some time off to ''work
on the career side of my life," said Molina, who drives
1 1/2 hours each way to twice-weekly team
practices. ''I'd like to play soccer every day. But that's
hard to do if you're not a professional. Very hard."
Young players - including University High's Emily
Wynne, who will play at Pepperdine next season;
Henry's Alison Lokanc, who is off to Nebraska; and
Michelle Russell of University City, who will play for
UC Santa Barbara next fall ---- use the league to
prepare for future endeavors. Wynne, Lokanc and
Russell, who all played for the Rancho Penasquitosbased PQ Premier club team, are members of the
San Diego SeaLions, who just completed their season
Saturday in fourth place of the WPSL's West Division.

WPSL national championship, visit the team's website
on the World Wide Web at www.mutinysoccer.com or
call 800-854-0913, ext. 703.
The WPSL is also loaded with accomplished players
formerly of the U.S. women's national team and
WUSA, most notably the California Storm's Brandi
Chastain and Shannon MacMillan.
This is pretty much the makeup of the league. There

Wynne, who as a 12-year-old looked up to Chastain
when the former national team standout scored the
game-winning goal against China to capture the 1999
World Cup, did more than just hold her own against
the established star. She covered Chastain like a
blanket during the first half, causing Chastain to
switch sides in the second half.
"I was kind of star-struck at first, but after our first
contact together, I just looked at her as if she was
just another person I had to play against," Wynne
said. "I played hard and it kind of worked out."
Though it's great to see the youngsters develop
rapidly, perhaps the most amazing part of this
dynamic between the old school and new school is
the established players' acceptance of their humble
surroundings. It can't be easy performing in front of
a few hundred fans at a high school for free ---- the
SeaLions call Hoover High home ---- when you used
to play on the biggest stage in front of thousands for
a paycheck. But they do it because the sport is all
they've ever known.

is no in between. You're either "climbing the ladder"
or "over the hill," but this formula is advantageous
for both sides.
"The girls get faster and younger every year," said
SeaLions goalkeeper and general manager Lorena
Snyder, who played for San Diego State from 199093. "They come out here and push us hard. Stuff that
these girls can do now, I couldn't do when I was
their
age."
Added Wynne: "Playing with the older girls has been
awesome. They're so helpful and give you advice.
They could be like, 'Whatever, you're just a high
school kid,' but they're so supportive and treat us
with respect. It helps me grow as a player, and
hopefully helps them out a little bit."
"Those girls that have played at the highest level,
even in scrimmages they have that intensity,"
SeaLions head coach Papo Santos said. "That's the
way they're built inside. They want to compete and
play, and look good, and feel good. Whether they
play in front of crowds or no crowds, they play the
same.
"That's the way an athlete should be. Play because
you love the sport."
Yes. An athlete in her purest form.

Wynne certainly has benefited from the experience,
and she proved it on July 4 when her primary duty
was to cover Chastain, who had just joined the Storm
after not being asked to rejoin the U.S. women's
national team.

Golden Gate Women's Soccer League (GGWSL) in
conjunction with the San Francisco Parks and
Recreation Department are hosting a benefit soccer
match between the Nighthawks and the GGWSL Mad

The featured game hopes to raise awareness and
funds to update uniforms and equipment for the
Mission Youth Soccer League (MYSL) and Horace
Mann Middle School soccer programs. At halftime,
San Francisco City Supervisor Tom Amiano will be
presented with a special honor from JC Chivas USA
thanking him for keeping Horace Mann Middle

Recreation Office of the General Manager will speak
about raising awareness and resources for soccer
programs in the Mission District.
San Francisco, CA - The WPSL is proud to announce
that the Women’s World Football Rankings, an
independent website that bases their rankings on
communication with coaches and players, and on
information available on the internet, has positioned
the WPSL California Storm of Sacramento as the
seventh best club team in the world. The Storm
ranks above all other United States club teams and
behind only no. 1 Umea IK, Sweden; no. 2 Roa,
Norway, no. 3 Djurgarden/Alvsjo, Sweden; no. 4
Trondheims-Orn, Norway; no. 5 Fortuna Hjorring,
Denmark and no. 6 FFC Frankfurt, Germany.
The California Storm are the reigning WPSL National
Champions, a title they also held in 1999 and 2002.
The Storm has played the US National Team,
Japanese National Team, Mexican National Team,
Australian National team, and Ghana National Team
during its long history. The team through the years
has taken pride in the further development of its
players. Fifteen players from the 2000 roster all
found positions on WUSA teams.
The pre-game skills clinic will feature former
Brazillian National Women's National team, WUSA
CyberRays and WPSL California Storm of Sacramento
star Sissi in conducting a free pre-game skills clinic
for youth players.
When told about his team's ranking, team owner and
coach Jerry Zanelli accredited much of his team's
success to the significant competition his team
receives as a member of the Women's Premier
Soccer League. Zanelli comments, "we are very
honored to receive such an accolade, as we have
fought very hard to bring this team's stature to the
highest level. We earned it by playing the tough
competition our league provides."
Admission is $8 for adults ($1 off if wearing a team
jersey) and children under 14 get in FREE. All
proceeds go directly to the SF Parks Trust to be

The league's tough competition proved noteworthy
during the Championship Tournament last season.
The Storm defeated the Denver Diamonds 2-1 in the
semi-finals, only after a nail-biting overtime battle.
The Storm then defeated the New England Mutiny 32 in the finals, scoring the 3rd and final goal with
only 2 minutes remaining.

the title in preseason after signing more than a dozen
WUSA players, but few of them were available for
regular action with the club and some never played a

experience of some sort in their starting lineups.
Laura Schott's Late Heroics Give California
Storm Third Crown
August 1, 2004
"[New England] is a very good team," said Zanelli,
whose club beat the Mutiny in the semifinals last
year. "This game could have gone either way."
BY SCOTT FRENCH
Soccer America Senior Editor
"The two best teams in the league, and good soccer
all the way around," noted Mutiny coach Austin
Daniels. "A clean game with a lot of chances for both
teams. ... The teams tried to play with skill and
commitment. The league has a bright future."
Folsom, CA - California Storm coach Jerry Zanelli had
been urging Laura Schott to try some slashing runs
through the New England Mutiny backline, so when
she finally saw her chance -- with the clock running
down and overtime in her sights -- she took off.
Schott, a former University of California All-American
who was a WUSA rookie last season with the
Washington Freedom, received a long pass from
defender Maureen Whitney several yards inside
enemy territory, then sprinted through a crease in
New England's backline, leaving Mutiny defenders in
her wake.
Emily Burt, a former Atlanta Beat and Philadelphia
Charge forward, scored twice in the first half-hour,
but
New
England
-primarily
through Naomi Stone's and Jessica Gjertsen's attacks
down the left flank -- rallied to tie the score shortly
after the break.
It led to an open shot, and Schott plastered the ball
off goalkeeper Sarah Walker's fingertips and into the
net, giving the Storm a 3-2 triumph at Folsom High
School and its third Women's Premier Soccer League
championship.
Gjertsen, a University of Connecticut standout,
halved the deficit from former University of
Massachusetts
standout
Rachel
LeDuc's
throughball in the 35th minute. LeDuc netted the
equalizer in the 47th, nodding the ball past University
of Mississippi goalkeeper Brittany Gillespie after
former Charge/Boston Breakers midfielder MaryFrances Monroe flicked on UConn junior Kathleen
Frank's long free kick.
Schott's 89th-minute goal provided the Storm its
second 3-2 win over New England in 23 days and
capped a sensational final four in one of the country's
two national amateur leagues.
The Storm swarmed from the start, putting New
England on its heels and grabbing a third-minute
goal and Burt beat former Charge teammate Alexa
Borisjuk and fired past Walker, a senior at Yale.
The championship was the Storm's third in the
seven-year-old league, to go with triumphs in 1999
and 2002.
Burt actually beat Borisjuk twice on the play, but her
first shot -- set up a former San Jose CyberRays
midfielder Stacie Alberico's through ball -- was
blocked by Walker. Burt retrieved the ball and
wiggled through the box to set up her second
chance.
"Always the last one is the best," Zanelli said
afterward. "Or the next one. With the competition in

chance at all. Hopefully, we can come back next year
and do the same thing."
The Storm, which has played in all three WPSL
"I was mad I missed [the first opportunity]," said
Burt, who scored the overtime winner in the Storm's
semifinal victory Saturday over the Denver
Diamonds. "I told myself, 'I've got to get that ball

back and finish it.' I had to make up for that chance.
I was just with the keeper and didn't do very well
with
it."
Alberico was most responsible for Burt's 28th-minute
strike, the climax to a four-pass, length-of-the-field
sequence that started when former Christina Bell
collected a ball in the Storm box and played it ahead
to her former CyberRays teammate Sissi.
Sissi chipped it over a defender to Fresno State junior
Barbara Davis on the left flank, and Davis quickly
picked out Alberico running toward the Mutiny box.
Alberico carried the ball a distance, then fed it into
space for Burt, who raced in from the right, poked
the ball past Walker, then finished into an open net.
Both teams had myriad chances. Monroe hit the
crossbar for New England, Gjertsen fired high after
beating a defender to close in 1-on-1 with Gillespie,
and former Sacramento State defender Mattea
Stanger halted Gjertsen on a breakaway. UConn's
Karlyn Miselis and former Carolina Courage midfielder
Stone made key defensive stops for the Mutiny, and
Walker made a fine save on Burt with three minutes
to go.
Zanelli took advantage of his depth, making 15
substitutions -- the WPSL permits free substitution -while Mutiny coach Austin Daniels kept his starting XI
on the field the full 90 minutes.
The Storm needed its depth for Burt, who departed
for a spell after rolling her ankle in the second half,
and for former Boston/San Jose winger Keri Sanchez,
who was battling leg problems and saw her
effectiveness wane as the match wore on.
Burt, who leaves Thursday for a trial with Russian
champion FC Energy Voronezh (which employs her
former Charge teammate Jenny Benson) caused
problems for the Mutiny whenever she was on the
field, and Schott always was dangerous although she
saw little of the ball for long stretches. Her last
touches were pivotal.
"I saw an opening between the [Mutiny] defenders,"
Schott said. "Coach has been telling me to cut it
when I get the ball, so finally I said, 'OK, I'm gonna
cut it.' And it worked out."
Said Burt: "She just, like, kicked it into fifth gear on
that goal. I was impressed by that burst of speed to
get by her player, and what a phenomenal finish. I
was happy. I was happy not to go into overtime
again."
The Diamonds won the third-place game, beating
2003 WPSL champ Utah Spiders, 2-1. Former
CyberRays forward Katie Antongiovanni's penalty kick
in the 80th minute proved decisive.
Kerri Weaver, a former University of Denver
standout, gave Denver a 29th-minute lead, lobbing
Utah goalkeeper Ashley Smith, a BYU junior, after
U.S. national team pool defender Kylie Bivens,
formerly with the Atlanta Beat, won a Spiders goal
kick.
Former University of Utah star Shauna Bingham
pulled the Spiders even in the 80th minute, firing
past goalkeeper Jenni Branam -- a U.S. nationalteamer who played last season with the San Diego
Spirit -- off a pass from Weber State sophomore
Lindsay McFarland.
The penalty kick, a delayed and questionable call,
was awarded by referee David Levin after Weaver
went down after beating one Utah defender and
knocking the ball into empty space after she was
confronted by two more defenders.
