Sarah Johnson was skewed in just such a way.
When her lather, David Johnson, bought Ins MGB,
he was following in his father's footsteps. At the age
of 62, Jerry Johnson bought a 197.3 MGB with an
improper grille. He was too old for this to be
considered a mid-life crisis, but considered himself
much loo young for a Caprice Classic.
David, meanwhile, under the guise of "my
wife wants a roadster," went shopping for
something British and convertible After scouring

excellent condition. A rudimentary inspection,
however, revealed a complication. David, you sec,
is over six feet tall. He didn't fit in the car. Some

problems during the strip-down. •The first thins
to realize about takinx on a full restoration is 1hc
fact that you need plenty of space. I've got a three
car garage at home, but by the time I'd stripped
the Gloria down I'd filled it . and I'd also got parts
under the bed, in the kitchen cupboards and in
the anic: he said. 1 0nc of the problems I
encountered was with the wooden structures
inside the sill sections under the doors between
the A and B posts. They hJd rotted and, as these
arc main stmcturcs, I had to replace them. I
started off with a piece or ash about thrcc·inchcs
square and four feet long. I had to shape the wood
by hand to make a perfect fit. The chassis was
stripped, c;;and-blastcd, e1chcd and �prayed wirh
chassis hlack. Parts like the front axle and Slt:ering
rods were powder·COi.'l.ted. For preservation
purposes I replaced all the original nuts and bolts
with st:iinlcss steel ones. I was very lucky lO h.ivc
a local supr,licr for this. I also <lid most of the:
bodywork myself. All the panels were stripped 10
bare metal anti repairs made wl11.:rc needed and a

owned by my old friend Duncan \\?ood. Duncan,
an Englishman workln9 in Texas, bought tht car
in London in 1996. The Glori.J has only had five
owners, all of whom Duncan h.1s on record,
including Colonel Stokes, the first owner.

1935 and kept it until 1950. The cnr also has a
