FALL EDITION 2014 3 2014 Physician Assistant Career Fair UTMB’s second annual Department of Physician Assistant Studies Career Fair was held on July 17th, 2014. Almost doubling last year’s numbers, over 40 PA graduates and representatives from 11 different healthcare agencies were in attendance. Students were provided with continental breakfast and optional mock interviews and resume reviews with UTMB and Workforce Solutions consultants. In addition to networking with recruiters, students seeking additional educational opportunities were able to attend presentations by five PA residency and fellowship programs. This year’s presenters included professionals from well-known local institutions such as Texas Children’s Hospital, Left to Right: Recruiter Bill Masters from VA Medical Center, Baylor Houston Physician Partners and Recruiter College of Medicine, and Reed Welker from Maxim Physicians MD Anderson Cancer Center, as well as an out-of-state option, Carolinas HealthCare System. Also provided were presentations by James Patterson and Bobby Cook from Workforce Solutions on “The Value of LinkedIn” and “Sculpting Your Resume” respectively. Seen in the picture to the left, Lesley Davies (far right), a class of 2013 UTMB PA graduate and current pediatric surgery fellow, was able to incorporate many of her personal experiences from the past year during her presentation on the Texas Children’s Hospital Fellowship program. As one of two UTMB Class of 2013 PA graduates selected for this prestigious fellowship during last year’s fair, Lesley is a personal testament to the opportunities the career fair provides for our graduating PA students. Special thanks to UTMB recruiters Aaron Greatens, Elaine Barnes, Left to Right: Recuiter Anna Paul Hay, and Sharon Chapman for their time and expertise in conducting Herreth, Fellowship Director Ryan Krasnosky PA-C, and current PA the mock interviews and resume reviews. surgical fellow Lesley Davies PA-C representing Texas Children’s Hospital Written by Laken Vichich, PAS Summer Intern Congratulations to our 5 lucky students who won a $20 campus bookstore gift card for being the first to RSVP to the event: Haley Shields, Roxana Esfahani, Akisha Keval, Jane Wang, and Ashley Westrum. FALL EDITION 2014 4 89 Physician Assistant Studies Students Cloaked in White Coat Ceremony on September 5 Galveston Daily News Press Run! Sarah Violetta, Allison Sarcinella, Jenna Andel, Rachael Acosta, Brandi Dyess, Chelsea Sapp, Taylor Riggs, Sarah Yeakley, Katelyn Hinchey The Physician Assistant Class of 2016 Bake Sale is on Monday, October 6 outside the Library, on the Library patio, from 8-2 and in the School of Health Professions lobby from 8-2. FALL EDITION 2014 5 RECOGNITION AND APPRECIATION FOR THE PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT By: Chelsea Halbleib and Brandi Dyess National Physician Assistant Week is celebrated every year from October 6-12 to honor the 100,000 clinically practicing Physician Assistants across America. A Physician Assistant (PA) is a mid-level healthcare provider that works under the supervision of a Physician. PA’s can take medical histories and conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive care, assist in surgery, write prescriptions and make rounds in hospitals. Studies have shown that PA’s provide physician equivalent care and high levels of satisfaction with health care services. Since this week marks a period of national appreciation for the Physician Assistant profession, the University of Texas Medical Branch PA Program would like to thank all PA faculty members for their important contributions to this profession, and to the continuing education of future Physician Assistants. The UTMB PA Program would also like to personally recognize the Program Chair, Dr. J. Michael Smith, PA-C, Ph.D., for being honored on October 3, 2014, by the DeBakey VA Medical Center for his services for Veteran and Military personnel. Throughout the fall semester, UTMB Physician Assistant students will be seeking to begin their contributions to the Galveston community, as modeled by their predecessors, through several different outreach projects. The UTMB PA Class of 2016 will be collecting personal hygiene products for The St. Luke’s Society that will be donated to those that are homeless in December. Any members of the community that may be interested in donating personal hygiene products, preferably deodorant, may drop off donations in collection boxes located in the UTMB School of Health Professions building at Mechanic and 11th street and outside the Moody Medical Library on Monday, October 6 from 8 am to 2 pm. Also, the UTMB PA students have partnered with FitTriRun, a local fitness company, to promote physical education and nutrition within the local school district. Several students will be travelling to local elementary and junior high schools throughout the year to help educate students about childhood obesity and the role that PA’s serve in healthcare. Finally, the PA students have also begun serving Shriner’s Children’s Hospital by volunteering to spend time with the children through recreational activities and holiday events. So, in honor of Physician Assistant week, please take the time to show your appreciation to both the Physician Assistant faculty members and the PA students, who are dedicated to serving their healthcare communities through this fast-growing career.
