So who’s hiring? Hundreds of companies. Here are a few of their stories:
Xerox Corp.
Xerox, the Fortune 500 company that
produces technology and services for the
business world, has a leading presence
in Rochester and around the world. (It
was founded here in 1906, and most of
its employees still work here.) Fortune ,
Working Mother and other leading magazines rank Xerox in the top 10 for diversity—providing a positive environment for
minorities, women, disabled and
gay/lesbian employees.

“The right community for me”
“Our opticians are a trip. Studies show that if you play an
instrument, then you can multitask and effectively use your
hands and brain simultaneously. Roughly one-third of our
employees are musicians, and 10 percent of them play in
bands. So every year, our ministry of fun committee organizes Optipalooza, a daylong music fest of our employees’
bands right here in our parking lot, followed by a big bonfire. It’s a riot.
“As a city, Rochester has a lot of smart people working
here,” adds Plympton, a board member of the Rochester
Regional Photonics Cluster. “My message to area college
students? You don’t have to leave Rochester to have a
great career.”
Julie Ann Burghardt has lived and worked in
Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Boston. But the Penfield
native—who earned a bachelor’s degree in social work
from Syracuse University in 1997 and a master’s degree in
education from Harvard University in 1998—is back home
in Rochester, where she has found her supreme bliss.
“I love this town,” says Burghardt, 30, a senior technical
writer for Johnson & Johnson’s Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics
Division in Greece who says that most of her local friends
have likewise done well in the job market. “This place has a
multitude of social and professional opportunities.”
Burghardt knows. The avid traveler, aerobics class participant, swimmer and Little
Theatre devotee has immersed herself in this community as a member of Digital
Rochester, Rochester Area 20 Somethings and Women in Computing.
She’s also a founding organizer of the City Walk, a group of roughly 100 young
professionals who visit three downtown bars or restaurants on the first Thursday of
every month. Burghardt says local college students should leave Rochester after
graduation—then come back.
“You will appreciate this place so much after you leave and go elsewhere,” says
Burghardt, who lives in a Webster apartment. “Rochester has something for everyone. Just get out into the community, soak it up and be a tourist in your own town.”
As for herself, Burghardt is home to stay. “You couldn’t get me to leave
Rochester. One day during the summer, I went to Charlotte Beach on my lunch break
to grab an ice cream from Abbott’s, and I saw a band playing for a large group of
senior citizens. They were so happy, and I thought to myself, ‘This is the right community for me—the kind that invests in its own people.’”

Eric Shoen watches only one TV show each week—“Extreme Makeover:
Home Edition.” Otherwise, the native of Madrid, a Syracuse suburb, has
way too much going on in his life to veg out in front of the tube.
“Living in Rochester is ideal because it’s a small-town feel about it, but
with cultural offerings of a major metropolis,” says Shoen, a 1999 Spanish
literature graduate of Hartwick College who works as deputy for corporate
development and public relations for Rural Opportunities Inc.
How busy is he? Shoen, 28, works full-time at a job he loves. He owns a nearly 100-year-old
home in the Corn Hill neighborhood, which he shares with two roommates. He teaches Sunday
school at Lake Avenue Baptist Church. He is the adult coordinator for Sheltered Reality
Rochester, which builds awareness among young people of the plight of the homeless. A former
singer with the Rochester Gay Men’s Chorus, he now works on fund-raising projects for the organization. He’s on the alumni board at Hartwick.
And in his spare time, he hikes and snowshoes in Mendon Ponds Park, attends concerts at
Kilbourn Hall and loves hanging out at Rich Port Bakery at the Rochester Public Market.
“I love my job,” says Shoen, who grew up on a dairy farm with a twin brother and older siblings, milking cows and putting up the crops. “My job helps people increase their income, find
housing and escape domestic violence. I feel that I can make a difference every day, and that
makes me feel like a productive member of society.”
A self-admitted cheerleader about Rochester, Shoen says he can’t imagine living anywhere
else. His message to area college students contemplating their post-university options:
“You’ve spent four years building a terrific network in Rochester. It will take you years to
build that kind of network elsewhere. So stay!”

Imagine a business owner who decides to divide that business up into small pieces and sell
them. She has essentially issued stock. If you
buy a piece, you own part of the company.
So it goes with stocks: Stock is ownership in

The key to financial prosperity is realizing the potential value of every dollar that comes into your
hands. In fact, think of cash as a seed—you can either eat it (spend it) or invest it (sow it).
The best money advice anyone can ever give you is to clearly understand the time value of money.
One of the fundamental principles of finance is the concept that $1 today is more valuable than $1 a
year from now. That’s because a dollar will probably buy less goods and services in the future due to
the destructive force of inflation. Plus, if you have the dollar in your hand today, you can invest it and
earn a return in the form of dividends, interest or capital gains.
Let’s assume you find a $20 bill on the sidewalk. You are faced with two potential uses: You can stick
the money in your tax-free retirement account or take yourself out to dinner. “It’s only 20 bucks!” you
say to yourself and opt for the dinner. In reality, you are spending far more.
Using one of the time-value-of-money formulas, we can calculate the real economic cost of not investing the cash. If you invested the money instead, in 35 years that $20 would be worth a little more
than $562, adjusting for inflation and assuming a 10 percent rate of return.
Once you understand this concept, it becomes painfully obvious that the small luxury items you
think nothing of are really costing you millions and millions of dollars in future wealth.

Oddly—or not—very few funds actually achieve this.
Another investment tool is commodities. People buy and
sell commodities based on speculation. For instance, if you
thought hurricanes over Latin America were going to destroy much of the coffee crop, you would call your commodity broker and have him purchase as much coffee as possible. If you were correct, the price of coffee would be driven
up drastically because the crop had been destroyed by
weather, making the surviving harvest worth more.
The odds are heavily against anyone hoping to build permanent wealth in the commodities markets.
Investors also can buy bonds. These are issued by businesses to raise money for expansion or by governments to finance
public works projects. They’re issued at various interest rates
real money
and sold to the public. Investors purchase them
with the understanding that the company will
pay back their original principal plus any interest that is due by a set date, the “maturity” date.
If you hold bonds, you get a check at set intervals—for example, every month—until the
“loan” is paid off. The interest you earn depends on the strength of the corporation. A general rule is “the higher the interest rate, the riskier the bond.” Still, bonds are considered a conservative investment.
Certificates of deposit are available at banks
and savings and loans. If you open a CD, you in
essence agree to lend money to the institution
for a certain amount of time. In exchange, you
are paid a predetermined rate of interest. Often,
banks will charge a penalty fee if the money is
withdrawn from the CD before it matures.
Say you come into a chunk of money (inheritance, bonus and the like). Money market accounts are frequently used to park cash between investments. Professional money managers take your cash and invest it in government t-bills (also known as treasuries), savings
bonds, certificates of deposit, and other safe
and conservative short-term commercial paper.
They then turn around and pay you, the owner
of the money market, your portion of the interest earned on those investments.
Most banks offer money market accounts to
their customers, although the amount of interest
paid will vary by account size. Highest interest
rates go to those who invest $100,000 or
more—but money market interest rates beat
typical savings accounts, even if you have only
a few thousand to put in.

7 Keys to Successful Investing
1. Leave a margin of safety. Benjamin Graham, father
of modern security analysis, taught that building a margin of
safety into your investments is the single most important thing
you can do to protect your portfolio.
2. Purchase only businesses you understand
(recognize your own limitations). You understand how
these businesses make their money, the corollary being that
you are able to make reasonable assumptions about future
performance.
3. Measure your success by the underlying
operating performance of the business. You should hold
small pieces of excellent businesses with the same tenacity you
would if you owned the entire company.

4. Be rational on price. There is one rule of mathematics
that is unavoidable: the higher a price you pay for an asset in
relation to its earnings, the lower your return. It’s that simple.
5. Minimize frictional expenses. Frequent trading can
substantially lower your long-term results due to commissions,
fees, taxes and other costs. Combined with the knowledge that
comes from understanding the time value of money, you realize
that the results can be staggering.
6. Keep your eyes open at all times. Always be on the
lookout for the next opportunity.
7. Allocate capital by opportunity cost. For a vast
majority of investors, simply buying index funds through a
dollar cost averaging plan is going to result in superior returns.

interest. Paying them off early doesn’t benefit
you. It would be better to put any extra cash
you have into a savings or retirement account.
The earlier you start saving, the more you’ll
have at retirement.
Someone told me I should be investing
my money. But I don’t know what it
would be for.
If you put money away in a savings plan,
you need exactly that—a plan. Plot your goals.
What do you want to do with this money, and
when? Buy a house? Launch a business? Travel
the world?
One option is a Roth IRA. In a Roth, the interest earned grows tax deferred until you retire
(age 59 1/2). Unlike with other IRAs, you can
pull money out for a first home purchase, college for your future children, or retirement and
you won’t be taxed on it.
Another option is a money market account.
(See page 27.) With this account, you’ll earn a
little more interest than you would in a savings
account. With a few exceptions, a money market account is fairly accessible—meaning you
can dip into it if needed. It’s a great way to
stockpile the money to pay for big-ticket items
ahead of time, rather than slapping down a
credit card and spending money you don’t have.
I never seem to have much left at the
end of the month.
After you pay your bills, save first toward your
financial goals, and spend what’s left. If your

NeighborhoodS
To find out more about these neighborhoods, go to www.rochestercity.living.com
19TH WARD
Across the river from the University of Rochester is one of the
most ethnically diverse areas of the city. It has more than
22,000 residents, an active neighborhood association and a
strong sense of community. The 19th Ward is minutes from the
airport and I-390 and home to Frederick Law Olmsted’s
Genesee Valley Park.
Living space: Apartments in subdivided houses and Boston doubles. This is an affordable neighborhood to buy your first home.
ALEXANDER STREET
Alexander Street is one of the city’s longest-running nightspots.
In the past couple of years, its energy has spread around the
corner to East Avenue, making East & Alexander a prime destination for partygoers. A relatively sedate business district by
day, the area comes alive at night, drawing professionals from
across the age spectrum.
Living space: Plentiful World War II-era apartment buildings on
Alexander Street. Subdivided mansions on nearby East Avenue
and Victorian houses on side streets.

dance clubs—and then stop at its late-night eateries to refuel.
Living space: Plenty of apartments in houses on side streets, over
retail shops on Monroe and in apartment buildings.
NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE ARTS
www.cornhill.org
Rochester’s oldest neighborhood is one of its most popular.
There are lots of apartments in the 19th century houses—from
mansions to workers’ cottages. The Corn Hill Arts Festival draws
200,000 people every July to see creations by some 500
artists. Corn Hill is right next to downtown and not far from the
University of Rochester. The new Corn Hill Landing apartments,
shops and cafes bring the neighborhood right up to the river—
and the 21st century.
Living space: Apartments in houses with lots of mid-19th century
character. New riverfront apartments in Corn Hill Landing.
www.thehomeroom.net/neighborhoods/arts
In the Neighborhood of the Arts, converted factories house apartments and studios for dancers and visual artists. Post-war apartment buildings, multifamily Victorians and cottages line the
area’s side streets. In the middle of it all is Memorial Art Gallery,
home of the Clothesline Arts Festival in September. Next door is
School of the Arts; actor Taye Diggs and musician Tweet are
alumni. ArtWalk, Rochester’s outdoor interactive art museum, features sidewalk imprints, artistic benches, tiled light poles, sculptures and bus shelters from MAG to George Eastman House.
Living space: Quirky Victorian houses on side streets, apartment
buildings and some second-floor units above retail on University
EAST END
PARK AVENUE
www.rochesterseastend.com
The East End is driving a renaissance in 24/7 city living with its
own stamp of jazzy/bluesy sophistication. The cultural heart of
Rochester, it is centered on East Avenue and stretches through
side streets north to Main Street. Recent condos, townhouses
and restaurants, some carved out of car dealerships that once
filled the area, have brought renewed energy to this downtown
neighborhood. You’ll find the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra,
Eastman School of Music, Blackfriars Theatre, Little Theatre and
the Rochester Contemporary art gallery in the neighborhood.
Living space: Ranges from inexpensive studios to penthouse condominiums from East to University avenues.
www.park-avenue.org
Between Culver Road and Alexander Street, Park Avenue is a
tree-shaded, residential neighborhood. Restaurants, salons and
shops are tucked among Victorian homes on the mile-long route.
Bistros and cafes make up the majority of Park Avenue businesses; the biggest concentration is near Berkeley Street. Al fresco
dining turns the sidewalks into patios during the summer.
Besides restaurants, there are antique dealers and gift shops,
plus convenience stores and a laundromat that serve the students and professionals who live in nearby apartments.
Living space: World War II era apartment buildings, flats in
large homes on numerous neighborhood streets
MONROE AVENUE
SOUTH WEDGE
www.monroeavenue.com
If Monroe Avenue were a painting, it would be a Jackson
Pollock or an Andy Warhol. Stretching from the Inner Loop to
Culver Road, Monroe has a funky, eclectic style with deep roots
in hippie culture. Monroe Avenue serves as “Main Street” for
residents who live in the neighborhood. Urban energy is evident
around the clock. Shops are open late on weekends, offering
unusual clothing, shoes, poster art, jewelry, antiques and used
books. Twentysomethings frequent the area’s sports bars and

who like the urban village atmosphere. (Abolitionist Frederick
Douglass lived here too.) South Avenue runs through the heart of
the Wedge; new eateries are popping up all the time.

place to ride, run or skate.

Like any college town, Brockport is a good place to live if you
crave what a campus has to offer—music, lectures, sports and
a youthful energy. It’s moments from the open road, antique
shops and farm markets of the countryside. The canal path is
here too, and Lake Ontario is close. The village is a 30-minute
drive from the city.
EAST ROCHESTER
www.eastrochester.org
Despite its name, East Rochester is a village all its own, not an extension of the city. Apartments can be found in homes on side
streets. If you like Italian food, you’re in luck: East Rochester has
several family-run Italian restaurants that have been in business for
generations. The village is close to all eastside shopping centers.

Newcomers are always a little surprised that Rochester is more
of an inland, river-oriented city. Those who love the seafaring
ways of the Great Lakes will feel right at home in Irondequoit.
Bordered by Lake Ontario and Irondequoit Bay, this town has a
flavor all its own. There are lakefront apartments and condos as
well as modest homes for rent.
PENFIELD
www.penfield.org
Another town with lots of apartments, Penfield is growing all the
time. New stores and restaurants are coming in to the busy retail corridors of Route 441 and Panorama Trail. At Four
Corners, where two busy roads meet, Penfield is recreating a
walkable streetscape that plays off the 19th century buildings.
PITTSFORD
www.villageofpittsford.org
With tony shops and restaurants in restored 19th century buildings, Pittsford has a well-heeled feel about it. There are apartments in the rambling, Victorian houses and in surrounding complexes. Wegmans’ uber-store and busy shopping plazas are
west on Monroe Avenue. Head east and be at EastView Mall in
a few minutes. The Erie Canal runs through town.
SPENCERPORT
www.vil.spencerport.ny.us
Like many villages located on the Erie Canal, Spencerport has
polished up its waterfront with new paths and a gazebo. The village has nice homes, some with apartments. You can do shopping for basics right in town; malls and plazas are neaby on
Ridge Road in Greece.
WEBSTER

What to do
After Dark
The city of Rochester has a number of entertainment districts, each with its own personality
Bistro’s wood-paneled bar is casual elegance. Monty’s Korner and the Old Toad
have imported ales. Muther’s has drag
shows and DJs. Riffs is a piano and wine
bar. Spacious SoHo East has dancing.
Main thoroughfares: East and Alexander streets
Parking: Free on Alexander, East (after 5) and
side streets. Pay lot behind Old Toad on
Alexander links to East and Union.
EAST END
TOM STARKWEATHER
From Charlotte to
the South Wedge,
Rochester’s
entertainment
districts come
alive with music
and dancing
when night falls.
CHARLOTTE
EAST & ALEXANDER
Sandwiched between the suburbs of
Greece and Irondequoit, Charlotte lies
along Lake Ontario and the Genesee
River. It is the northern tip of the city of
Rochester. Being so far from downtown, it
feels more like a seaside village than a
city neighborhood. The Spirit of Ontario
1, aka The Cat, Rochester’s new highspeed ferry to Toronto, makes daily stops
at a new terminal on the river.
Bars and restaurants in Charlotte draw
the boat crowd for lunch, dinner and lively
happy hours on outdoor decks. For steaks
and seafood, try Gordon’s Steak and Crab
House and Schooner’s Riverside Pub. You
can find lighter fare at Leadbelly Landing,
Scuttlebutt’s, Windjammers and Bellanca’s
Portside Restaurant. Nola’s Waterfront
Barbecue is a Cajun and barbecue establishment that brings in national musical
acts. Pelican’s Nest Restaurant serves a
wide range of American cuisine. Some
restaurants in Charlotte have been in business for decades: Abbott’s Frozen Custard
(since the 1920s), LDR Char Pit (’40s) and
Mr. Dominic’s (’70s).
Bars: The riverfront deck at Pelican’s
Nest is busy at happy hour. Penny Arcade
has live bands. Schooner’s Riverside Pub
offers live music on the waterfront. Nola’s
has national blues acts.
Alexander Street is one of the city’s
longest-running nightspots. In the last few
years, its energy has spread around the
corner to East Avenue, making East &
Alexander a prime destination for partygoers. A relatively sedate business district by day, the area comes alive at
night. Live and DJ music resonates from
practically every restaurant and watering
hole, and all the clubs are within easy
walking distance of one another.
Restaurants serve Mexican, continental
and fusion cuisine in beautifully restored
and renovated spaces. Mex has converted a 19th-century house into a colorful
Latin American bistro. The Bamba Bistro
(previously Rio Bamba) is enjoying renewed vitality. Situated in a factory loft,
Soho East draws well-dressed crowds for
dinner, drinks and late-night dancing.
Downstairs at Daisy Duke, country fans
ride the mechanical bull. Tiny Veneto
Wood Fired Pizza and Pasta is in demand
for its homey Italian dishes; its sister piano bar, Riffs, serves wine and appetizers. The wait staff at the Old Toad sport
British accents and the menu to match.
Rubino’s, a citywide favorite for imported
Italian foods, prepares sandwiches and
soups during the day. For late-night hots
and hamburgers, there’s Roc City Hots.
Bars: Ride the mechanical bull at Daisy
Duke. Bar Fly and Karma 355 are connected. There’s dancing at Alexander Street
Pub and Whiskey Bar and Lounge. Bamba

If you’re looking for music, theater and
film, the East End is a good place to go.
Anchoring the district is the Eastman
School of Music on Gibbs Street, whose
students and faculty perform at Eastman
Theatre, Kilbourn Hall and area cafes
such as Java’s, Spot Coffee and the Little
Theatre. The Rochester Philharmonic
Orchestra plays in Eastman Theatre,
which has just completed a dramatic renovation. Blackfriars Theatre, the Little
Theatre and Rochester Contemporar y
lend additional flavors of visual and theatrical art. Standout local musicians and
touring marquee acts headline local clubs
including Milestones Restaurant & Music
Room and Montage Grille. The bar scene
ranges from the upscale lounge at Max of
Eastman Place to casual watering holes
Richmond’s and Salinger’s. The East End
is just a short walk to East & Alexander,
another hot night spot.
Restaurants in the East End rank
among favorites for dinner cuisine that is
out of the ordinary. Max of Eastman
Place is known for seasonal dishes that
spotlight locally produced foods. Cozy
Restaurant 2 Vine, with its open kitchen
and sprawling bar, draws big crowds
every weekend. Alexandria is the neighborhood’s Greek restaurant and a favorite stop for theater- and concert-goers.
Tournedo is a new steak place in the Inn
on Broadway. Golden Port Dim Sum,
House of Sushi and Lin’s Garden Chinese
Restaurant offer affordable Asian cuisine.
You’ll find pub food at Richmond’s and
Matthew’s East End Grill. For lighter fare,
try Little Theatre Café, Three S Restaurant,
Stromboli Express, Java’s and Little
Baker y. Java’s, Spot Coffee and
Backstage Coffee House (located inside
the Eastman School) are filled with students morning to night.
Bars: Salinger’s and Richmond’s are

HIGH FALLS
Visitors can get a good view of the
thundering High Falls day or night from
the Pont de Rennes bridge, a pedestrian
walkway named after Rochester’s sister
city in France.
During the day, ad agencies, tech
companies and engineering firms fill the
former industrial buildings. At night,
brick-paved streets make it a favorite location for outdoor concerts and festivals.
Area bars and restaurants cater to soccer and baseball fans who go to games
at nearby Frontier Field. (The stadium
sits in the shadow of Eastman Kodak
Co.’s headquarters on State Street.)
Later on, club hoppers come in search of
the area’s dance clubs.
High Falls restaurants and bars are
housed in repurposed factory buildings—with all the brick, wood and natural light you’d expect. Jimmy Mac’s
Bar & Grill is a neighborhood bar; you
can dine on the patio overlooking the
river gorge. Triphammer Grill serves
eclectic cuisine in a cozy, upscale atmosphere—with seating indoors and
outside overlooking the falls.
McFadden’s Restaurant and Saloon is
an Irish pub serving soups, salads,
sandwiches and wraps. Well-known dueling pianists perform at Keys Martini &
Piano Bar, which serves everything
from chicken wings to lobster tails.
Rubino’s Italian Submarines is open for
lunch and early dinner. Spin Caffe
serves coffee (roasted onsite) and light
fare—with wireless Internet access.
High Falls Deli and Café and Hip Cup
Coffee are recent additions to the
neighborhood.
Bars: Tiki Bob’s Cantina is a DJ nightclub; McFadden’s Restaurant and Saloon
next door is an Irish pub. Keys Martini &
Piano Bar has dueling pianos.
Main thoroughfares: State, Commercial and
Platt streets
Parking: Meters on State Street (free after 5),
High Falls Garage
MONROE AVENUE
Monroe Avenue is one of the single
best locations in Rochester for sheer diversity of dinner menu choices at reasonable prices. Among the cuisines: Indian
(India Cafe, Raj Mahal), Mediterranean
(Olive Tree, Aladdin’s Natural Eater y and
Oasis Mediterranean Bistro), Vietnamese
(Dac Hoa, Le Lemon Grass), fusion (Lola
Bistro), and Chinese and Japanese
(Ming’s II, Plum House Japanese
Restaurant, Hunan Wok). Avenue mainstay Jeremiah’s Tavern, which offers a full
menu, is best known for its Buffalo wings
and Friday-night fish fry. Basta Pasta
serves up American Italian. Mark’s Hots
and Gitsis Texas Hots are great places for
inexpensive diner food and fascinating
people-watching, especially late at night.
For pizza and subs, there’s Corky’s
Craving Parlor, Acme Bar & Pizza,
Domino’s, Gina’s Sub Shop, Mark’s
Pizzeria, Pizza Hut and Sal’s New York
Pizzeria. Countr y Sweet offers popular
chicken and ribs. For coffee, there’s
Starbucks.
Bars: Acme Bar & Pizza is friendly
and busy. The Bug Jar has live alternative music and DJs. Sports bars include
Woody’s, the Sports Page and J.D.
Oxford’s. Monty’s Krown is a British pub
with live music. The street’s gay bar is
the Avenue Pub.
East & Alexander
comes alive
at night.
Main thoroughfare: Monroe Avenue
Parking: Free on Monroe and side streets.
(Choose your spot carefully; tow trucks take
their job seriously.)
NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE ARTS
This neighborhood is known more for
its artistic pursuits than nightlife choices.
But the restaurants and bars that call NOTA home are well-respected and popular.
And the interesting people you’ll meet out
will make for a memorable evening.
Options include California Rollin’ (sushi),
Edibles Restaurant (eclectic fine dining),
Cutler’s Restaurant (American), Salena’s
(Mexican) and Starr y Nites Café (chefprepared café fare).

ST. PAUL QUARTER
On St. Paul and Water streets, between the Inner Loop and Main, hulking
brick factories once housed Rochester’s
venerable clothing companies and tooland-die shops. A hundred years later, the
St. Paul Quarter was the first city neighborhood to convert factories into loft
apartments, tech startups and a growing
number of bars and restaurants.
The early-evening crowd can find martinis and dinner in the quarter’s eclectic
eateries. St. Paul also is home to an impressive collection of dance clubs, and
Rochesterians come here for techno, salsa or the live offerings of touring bands.
Tucked behind St. Paul on a tiny side
street not far from the river, Water Street
Music Hall brings rising stars and established bands with a loyal following.
Sienna Contemporar y Grill & Bar
serves regional American cuisine in an
upbeat, contemporary setting. At Tapas
177 Lounge, eat at the bar or in the
downstairs dining room; you’ll find wild
game and seafood on the menu. Lively
Caribbean flavors mark the lunches and
early dinners served at L.J.’s II Jamaican
Cuisine. Pane Vino Ristorante has moderately priced Italian and an extensive
wine list. Chaser’s Sports Bar and Grill
has sandwiches and wraps for the dart
and pool leagues and football fans who
frequent the place. Dining at Mythos
Mediterranean Grill, located in a historic
building on Water Street, comes with a
view of the Genesee River.
Bars: Chaser’s is a sports bar. Water
Bars in the South Wedge have loyal
followings: the original MacGregor’s,
Beale Street Café and its blues crowd,
Lux Lounge and its funky alternatives. The
South Wedge has restaurants to satisfy a
variety of tastes, from meat lovers (Cajun
barbecue at Beale Street Café) to vegetarian (Skippy’s Vegetarian Restaurant).
Dashen Ethiopian Restaurant brings a
world-class flavor to the street. Grab a
slice or a pasta dinner for takeout at Little
Venice Pizza or a sandwich for lunch at
Julienne or Open Face Sandwich Eater y.
If you’re in the mood for bread and pastries, try Rudy’s Oven and Cheesy Eddie’s.
Daily Perks Coffeehouse and Women’s
Coffee Connection serve the brew night
and day, respectively.
Bars: Beale Street Café has live blues.
The Keg is a sports bar tucked under the
German House. The artsy Lux Lounge has a
different theme every night. MacGregor’s,
a neighborhood mainstay, has specialty
and craft beers, ales and stouts.
Main thoroughfares: South Avenue and
Gregory Street
Parking: Free on South (after 5) and side streets

Whether you find renewal chanting “om,” singing

likely find a spiritual home in Rochester. Many groups
also spearhead projects to help the community,

Sports and
recreation
Rochester offers many opportunities to be active. Anyone who likes cycling, rugby, skiing
or any league sport imaginable will find something to do. There’s also a solid core of pro
teams with faithful fans. Rochester’s closest “big league” team is the Buffalo Bills, who
hold training camp here. But minor league doesn’t mean second-rate: Rochester’s hockey,
baseball, soccer and lacrosse teams consistently rank among the top in their leagues.
BOATING
