Page 3 THE VUE FROM THE GREENS A busy April is in the books and the Greens department has battled the weather while playing catch-up to prepare for the season. We took advantage of a dry window during the first week of the month to aerify greens and they are progressing nicely as the season approaches. Time and weather constraints prevented us from pulling cores on tees and approaches, instead we solid tined both playing surfaces followed by a coating of sand. Phase 2 of the intermediate and collar project was completed during the middle of the month that will drastically improve the playability and aesthetics of our green surrounds. In addition to projects and cultural practices, the staff has been busy with mulching, mowing and focusing on details. April showers bring May flowers and I am excited to announce the addition of a new horticulturist and a revamped horticulture crew. Carly-Jean Schaefer will start following graduation from Penn State in early May. Carly brings a wealth of experience along with an energetic attitude to the team that will create a fresh outlook to the beds and landscape throughout the property. The possibilities do not end there. Carly also has a strong background with teaching and outreach that will create a new level of interaction with the membership through events. As May settles in, so does the start of the season. Number five green will open during the first week along with all the tee projects completed this past March. The staff will continue to put focus on mulching and prepping beds in anticipation of our annual flower plantings during the middle of the month. We will also settle into our everyday maintenance routine in providing the conditions that each of you have grown accustomed to. As always, we look forward to seeing you on the course! Fairways and Dreams, Josh A. Saunders and The Greens Staff J. K. ELLIS MEMORIAL MEMBER/MEMBER MATCH PLAY TOURNAMENT The J. K. Ellis Memorial Member/Member Match Play Tournament, a season long, better ball of partner’s event always fills up quickly. The sign-up sheet is in the Men’s Locker Room next to the handicap board. Grab your partner and make sure to sign-up early as this event always sells out. Matches will begin in early May. THE CHARLES PEARSON OPENING SWAT – SATURDAY, MAY 2 The official start of the SWAT season begins with the annual opening breakfast, renamed this year in honor of longtime member Charlie Pearson. The event is better ball at 75% handicap, and the Pro Shop will make the pairings. The shotgun will be at 9:30 following breakfast and the entry fee is $20 cash paid in the pro shop. Page 4 GOLF TIPS FROM THE PROS BY DEREK DEJIDAS , PGA PROFESSIONAL Launch the Ball Higher for Added Distance You may step up to the tee of a par 5 reachable in two shots or a longer par 4 and feel that a few extra yards off the tee will give you a better chance of scoring on the hole. Or maybe you are between clubs on an approach shot and you feel more comfortable swinging the shorter club. Instead of attempting to swing harder or faster to increase your club head speed and distance, make an effort to swing with the same rhythm and tempo as you normally do, except simply try to hit the ball higher. With a driver, launching the ball one-half of a degree higher while maintaining the same spin rate will yield an additional 5 to 15 yards depending on your ball speed. And here is how to do it: First, you have to make a few minor adjustments with your setup. Stand a tiny bit closer to the ball and move the ball slightly forward from its normal position. As you swing make an effort to keep your head behind the ball and your trail arm swing underneath, or lower than, your lead arm through impact. This will help you launch the ball higher and give you the few extra yards you are looking for. To launch the ball higher, start by setting up with the ball slightly forward of center of your stance. As you swing through impact, attempt to keep your head behind the ball. This will allow the club to have more dynamic loft. Keeping the trail arm underneath, or lower than the lead arm through impact will aid in attaining a higher launch angle on the shot. For more golf instruction tips, please visit derekdejidas.com. To schedule a lesson with Derek, please call the Longue Vue Club Golf Professional Shop at (412) 793-2375. Page 5 2015 CADDIE PROGRAM AND POLICIES Caddies: In order to preserve and encourage the tradition that caddies bring to the game of golf and to enhance the Longue Vue golfing experience, the Golf Committee and the Pro Shop staff intend to provide a core group of caddies for our members and guests. If you decide to walk while playing, you must take a caddie during the following times: Weekends: Must use a caddie, if available, until 11:00 am Weekdays: Must use a caddie, if available, between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm Members under age 30 may walk and carry their bag at all times, except in club events In addition, recommended compensation rates will be posted in the Pro Shop. Forecaddie Policy: The Golf Committee feels strongly that walking is an integral part of the game of golf. Because of this and in an effort to speed up pace of play, the Golf Committee has instituted the following policy regarding forecaddies for the 2015 season: On Fridays from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from the first tee time until 11:00 am, if a caddie is available, it is mandatory that a foursome take a caddie as a forecaddie (runner). In doing so, those in the group will have their respective cart fees reduced by $5 each, and each golfer in the foursome is expected to pay the forecaddie at least the recommended pay scale, which will be posted in the Pro Shop. Caddie Reservation Procedure: If you would like to reserve a caddie, please call the Pro Shop when you make your tee time. Our staff will be happy to coordinate arrangements for you with one of the caddies. Please be sure to indicate the number of golfers in your group when calling and the time that you are planning to tee off. We are fresh off of our First Vine Club meeting as well as a very successful “Tasting of Rhone Wine Dinner” this past Friday evening. This should be interesting, please if you see Mr. Evans, let him know your thoughts, or better yet, tell Mrs. Evans. The next Vine Club Meeting is set for Thursday May 14th and we will be meeting on the Pink Terrace. This meeting will be focused on the Franciscan Estate Winery in Napa Valley, CA. Page 22 2015 SWIMMING LESONS AT LVC Group swimming lessons will be offered for 5 weeks beginning on Monday, June 15th and will end on Thursday, July 16th. Please see the schedule below for more information on specific dates and times. In order to accommodate the varying ability of swimmers, two different group levels will be offered and are described below. Private lessons will also be available throughout the summer. Tadpole Group This group is designed for children 3-6 years of age who are not yet comfortable in the water and/or cannot perform basic swimming skills such as floating, treading water, streamline kicking, and blowing bubbles through the nose underwater. These skills are the focus of the Tadpole Group. Lessons for this group will run from 11:15am-11:45am, Monday through Thursday. Guppy Group This group is designed for children 5 -8 years of age who are comfortable in the water and can perform basic swimming skills such as floating, treading water, and alternating arm strokes. Swimmers in this group will learn how to improve these skills as well as become more proficient at streamline kicking, competitive freestyle, and proper breathing techniques. Lessons for this group will run from 11:45am-12:15pm, Monday through Thursday. Parent and Child Group This group is designed to familiarize children between the ages of 6 months and approximately 3 years with the water and to teach swimming readiness skills. These lessons also provide safety information and teaching techniques parents can use to orient their children to the water. Children in this group must be at least 6 months old and accompanied by a parent or adult during each lesson. Lessons for this group will run from 12:15pm-12:45pm. These lessons will only be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Private Lessons Private lessons will be available for those interested in having one on one instruction.
