HISTORIC BRIDGE INVENTORY FORM
Manton Bridge
Bridge No. 007801
Description:
The structural system of this bridge consists of six parallel steel I-beams; the original
riveted plate-girder beams from the 1889 bridge now appear as non-load-bearing fascias. The
abutments were reconstructed, and a new concrete deck installed. The picket-style railings and
metal guard rails along the roadway are also modern.
Historical Background:
This was the first steel (as opposed to wrought-iron) highway bridge built in Rhode
Island. It was designed by the Providence City Engineer’s Office and built by Milliken Brothers.
Lack of structural integrity in the original girders required replacement of the bridge.
Evaluation:
Structurally, this is a modern beam bridge. The two original fascia girders (notable for
their cast-iron sunburst decorative elements) were reinserted as non-structural and non-loadbearing elements. While it is laudable that the original girders have been retained, the bridge is
primarily a modern structure that is too recent to be eligible for the National Register.
Recommendation:
This bridge is not recommended as National Register-eligible.
