but there’s so much more to this stunningly
beautiful freshwater paradise that you may
not believe it until you experience it for

The 1000 Islands (pronounced “Thousand
Islands”) has been a vacation destination for
more than 100 years yet it still has an almostmystical reputation. First-time visitors are
awed to find that a place of real-life castles,
public lighthouses and nearly 2,000 islands
crammed into a mere 50 miles truly exists.
Visitors to this region settle into the
waterfront hotels, weeklong cottages and
riverside campsites before venturing onto
the St. Lawrence River and eastern Lake
Ontario. Tour boats have been meandering
through the islands for decades, giving
visitors an up-close look at this Gilded Age
vacation retreat. Today, visitors marvel at the
stark differences among the islands. Some
go on for miles and are home to multiple
year-round residents. Others have public
beaches, private camps and are home to
only eagles, osprey and other wildlife.

to be inspected when crossing the border
between the United States and Canada. Specific
forms of identification are required for travel between the two countries. At press time, recommended forms of identification are: a passport,
passport card, enhanced state driver’s license
approved for border travel or a NEXUS card for
frequent cross-border travelers.
Regulations regarding exemptions and restrictions for belongings or merchandise brought
across the international border exist. There may
be certain variable restrictions for taking alcohol,
tobacco products, certain foods, etc. across the
border. Please be prepared to declare all belongings and show receipts for purchases when
reporting to border agents for entry.

he 1000 Islands International Tourism Council operates
the New York State Welcome Center located at Collins
Landing, Alexandria Bay, New York – next to Interstate 81 and
the Thousand Islands Bridge. Stop in and browse brochures
highlighting destinations throughout the 1000 Islands Region
as well as vacation areas throughout New York. Information
about lodging options and attractions in Southeastern Ontario
is also available. The knowledgeable staff is happy to help with
directions and area information.
The Welcome Center offers free wireless Internet, accessible
both inside and outside the building. Picnic tables are scattered
about the grounds and within a covered pavilion. Make
yourself at home and enjoy the lovely campus.
From Interstate 81 (north and south), follow the blue “New York
State Welcome Center” and “?” signs near Exit 50S. Signs are
also visible from Route 12 between Alexandria Bay and Clayton.
The Welcome Center operates year round (daily between May
and October, and weekdays from November to April.) Wireless
Internet access available daily, 24 hours. Picnic tables/pavilion
available weather permitting.

rockville is considered the eastern
gateway to the 1000 Islands and is one
of the oldest and most charming cities in
Ontario. Brockville attracts visitors from

Revolution when displaced Loyalist refugees
settled and founded the first incorporated

ibbetts Point Lighthouse stands tall at
the very edge of Lake Ontario where
the Great Lakes system funnels into the
St. Lawrence River. The lighthouse is an
extension of Cape Vincent – the community
where lake and river meet – and a place not
to be missed by those who want to get an
up-close view of this majestic waterway.
Cape Vincent is a historic community that
takes great pride in its French heritage. The
colorful French Festival is held every year
near Bastille Day, the second weekend in
July. French pastries and bread are a must
while watching Napoleon lead the parade.
It was his brother Joseph who established
residence in the community in the early
1800s. It’s said that the French leader was
on his way to Cape Vincent to join his
brother before his defeat.

Are there really 1,000 Islands?
YES!
We get this question all the time.
There are actually more than
1,800 islands (1,864 to be exact) located in
an approximately 50-mile archipelago that
makes up the Thousand Islands region! To
become an official part of the count, an
island must meet two criteria: it must be
above water 365 days a year and it must
support a living tree.
No island is divided by the international
border, meaning each is either wholly within
the United States or Canada. That causes
the international border to zig-zag across
the water instead of forming a straight line
between the two counties. In some places
along the St. Lawrence River, islands that are
very close are in different counties.
Each island has its own individuality with
features such as stately granite cliffs, soft
sand bays, tall dark pines and vibrant
maple trees. It’s a sightseer’s paradise.
About that dressing…

housand Island Dressing must
come from the 1000 Islands, right?
It sure does but don’t expect everyone
here to agree upon where within the
region it originated.
There are two prevailing beliefs
about how the dressing came to be.
Both origin stories take place on the
New York side of the 1000 Islands.
Alexandria Bay claims it was created
in a pinch aboard a boat owned by
George Boldt, builder of Boldt Castle.
Clayton residents attribute the dressing
to the wife of a local fishing guide.

waters of the great Lake Ontario and
the mighty St. Lawrence River. Salmon and

the nation’s past. From Gilded Age mansion
castles and fierce battles of the War of 1812,
significant historical events occurred on the shorelines of the 1000 Islands.

and heritage attractions of New York State, spanning the Women’s Rights
Movement, two Olympics and the War of 1812 as well as the American
Revolution. Maps highlighting historic sites are available at highway
information centers such as the Welcome Center near the American span of
the Thousand Islands Bridge in Alexandria Bay.

New York State Zoo, the only zoo dedicated
to the bears, eagles and other animals of
New York State. The park’s vast picnic areas
and stone pavilions can be reserved for
private functions through the city Parks and
Recreation Department.
The park is said to be home to the
Thompson Park Vortex, an unexplained
phenomenon that supposedly teleports
visitors – unharmed – to another location
within the park without explanation. The
location is said to move within the park and
visitors enjoy searching for it.
Winter in and around the Watertown area
brings snowboarding, downhill skiing, and
Watertown is one of New York’s fastest
growing cities. Many newly constructed
national retail stores and restaurants have
sprung-up in the past few years. With its
abundance of lodging options, Watertown
is quickly becoming a popular shopping
destination.
Watertown is proud to have as its neighbor,
Fort Drum, which is home to the Army’s 10th
Mountain Division. Thousands of active duty
soldiers and their families are stationed at

atertown and Northern New York are
proud to have Fort Drum and its 10th
Mountain Division as their neighbor. Fort
Drum’s soldiers, families and civilian support
staff total approximately 30,000 people.
With so much going on in their back yard,
the small-town communities around the

Fort Drum has been used as a military
training ground since 1908. The
