he recent excursion to Shepparton by
three carloads of Society members
went very well, and a good time was had
by all.The weather was absolutely
perfect, the hosts were wonderful and the
company was not too bad (although I
can’t vouch for the other two cars).
Shepparton has certainly changed a lot
since I was there last. Next time you are
in the vicinity, be sure not to miss the
concrete cows ... fascinating examples of
public art.
I could have sworn I saw a heap of
cameras around, but I have not exactly
been overwhelmed with pictures of the
event. However, I did receive a few from
John McCormick (page 12) and I did take
a few myself (centrespread).
In the meantime, direct your browser to
www.coop99.at/darwinsnightmare for a pre-show read. Don’t
worry about it spoiling the experience -glowing reviews are not difficult to find,
but nothing I have read could “prepare”
you. It is one of those deals where you
have to see the reality to comprehend it.
Only one of the villains in `Darwin’s
Nightmare is an Australian, Europe is
cited as the main market for Nile Perch.
Shortly after seeing this documentary
however, I was in a Coles Supermarket
deli and noticed that Nile Perch fillets
were on display ... “thawed for your
convenience”.

I want to record here our thanks to our
hosts (in order of visitation): Bernard
Franken, Rob McManus and Phil Smith,
as well as their respective families for a
job exceptionally well done.
It is not your ordinary documentary, much
of it filmed without permission and at
considerable risk to the film-makers.The
story concerns cichlids of course, else it
would be unlikely to make it into this
tome, but the human story is astounding.
So when you get the chance to see
`Darwin’s Nightmare’, take a few nonfishkeeping friends along with you. I can’t
say that you will enjoy it, but you do
need to see it.

phase: directly placed on the hard floor and
not even the tiniest trace of annoying sound!
This kind of setup will probably be used in
all my future freshwater tanks, although I am
still playing with the idea of moving all the filters to the cellar below, so I would get rid of
simply all sources of unwanted sound. Am I
exaggerating? Maybe yes, but a completely
silent tank surely is worth the effort in my
opinion!
Principle: this tool is mainly intended to
aerate our cichlid aquarium, but also used as a
decorative highlight. Normal air is pressed
through an air hose by an air pump and driven through an airstone where it escapes as tiny
bubbles that rise to the surface. On their way
to the top the excess carbon dioxide that is
released by the fish is replaced by oxygen that
is present in the bubbles. This can be an effective way to ensure that our cichlids do not suffocate on warmer days, but this cannot be an
excuse to permanently overstock our tanks
though!
zzzzzzz
zz
Noise: The humming of the pump and the
bubbling of the air can become annoying,
especially when the pump is placed directly on
a hard surface. Also the amount of sound rises
proportional with the increasing air volume.
Possible cures: Only the airpump can be
silenced by suspending it with an elastic band.
Alternative solution #1: An oxygenator is
absolutely quiet and much more effective, as it
releases bubbles that contain 100 per cent
oxygen, while normal air only contains about
20 per cent. This tool has the big disadvantage
that it needs a regular refill with expensive and
corrosive hydrogen-peroxide
though.

Their only big disadvantage is that they cannot be used inside the tank. A minor issue is
that their internal body contains metal, which
could be harmful over time. Frequent water
changes should prevent the build-up of those
metals in the aquarium water though.
4.Filter or pump outlet — spray bar trickle filter — bio-wheel
Principle: After the water flows through the
filter, it has to return to the tank, one way or
another. You can lead the water straight back
into the tank, or use additional equipment for
extra aeration or biological filtration. When the
water is lead straight back into the tank, some
hobbyists use the strong flow of it to stir the
water surface for aeration reasons.
Noise: Depending on the height difference
between filter outlet and water surface or the
position of the outlet hose near the water surface, more or less air will be trapped and cause
much or only little noise.
Possible cures: There is not much that can
be done to avoid trickling, dripping and flow
noises if they are the consequence of the need
to maximise the aeration in the tank. A sponge
can be mounted under a bio-wheel or a trickle filter to break the fall of the water drops.
Always check that the water flow is not
obstructed too much though. Carefully applied
synthetic filter wool can be used to dampen
the sound of spray bars. Hoses can be positioned just below the water surface to avoid
too much turbulence.

he recent excursion to Shepparton by

went very well, and a good time was had
by all.The weather was absolutely
perfect, the hosts were wonderful and the
company was not too bad (although I
can’t vouch for the other two cars).
Shepparton has certainly changed a lot
since I was there last. Next time you are
in the vicinity, be sure not to miss the
concrete cows ... fascinating examples of
public art.
I could have sworn I saw a heap of
cameras around, but I have not exactly
been overwhelmed with pictures of the
event. However, I did receive a few from
John McCormick (page 12) and I did take
a few myself (centrespread).
In the meantime, direct your browser to
www.coop99.at/darwinsnightmare for a pre-show read. Don’t
worry about it spoiling the experience -glowing reviews are not difficult to find,
but nothing I have read could “prepare”
you. It is one of those deals where you
have to see the reality to comprehend it.
Only one of the villains in `Darwin’s

cited as the main market for Nile Perch.
Shortly after seeing this documentary
however, I was in a Coles Supermarket
deli and noticed that Nile Perch fillets
were on display ... “thawed for your

I want to record here our thanks to our
hosts (in order of visitation): Bernard
Franken, Rob McManus and Phil Smith,
as well as their respective families for a
job exceptionally well done.
It is not your ordinary documentary, much
of it filmed without permission and at
considerable risk to the film-makers.The
story concerns cichlids of course, else it
would be unlikely to make it into this
tome, but the human story is astounding.
So when you get the chance to see
`Darwin’s Nightmare’, take a few nonfishkeeping friends along with you. I can’t
say that you will enjoy it, but you do
need to see it.
