Drifting: What is “Porsche Parade”?

P
arade is the “big” Porsche
Club event of the year: our
annual national convention.
Parade has a potpourri of activities,
and club members from all across
North America come together for
this once-a-year extravaganza to
participate in a week of competitive
events, to socialize and enjoy their cars, with seminars
and tours adding to the event’s variety. For many
club members, Parade is their big vacation for the
year. It provides them with an opportunity to see
new parts of the country as well as to visit with PCA
friends that they only see once a year, at Parade!
This year the Porsche Parade is being held at
Monterey, California. Many of us will be traveling to
Monterey by car or plane to attend this fun event.
One group of seven couples has even rented a car
carrier to bring their cars to and from Parade while
they fly out! As for us, we look forward to the 2-½
day drive, where we’ll explore new roads and towns
along the way. I’m sure we’ll be traveling a bit on
Route 66, part of our nation’s highway history.
Why do we go?
• To really get away from our routines
• To explore our country
• To see the incredible collection of
Porsches that come from all over the
country (including Alaska) every year
• To enjoy the driving tours once we get there
(James Dean’s last route is one of them)
• To visit with our friends
that we’ve met at previous Parades, including
members of the Porsche
family from Germany!
This one should be special, since
there are probably more Porsches
in California than any other state.
Who knows? Even Jay Leno or
Jerry Seinfeld may show up!

Mav of the Month
Sometimes volunteers don’t wait for a position to
open in the club; they just create one. Such is the case
with this month’s Mav of the Month. Stephanie Ho
has been a regular attendee at our Maverick Monthly
Socials for more than the past year. She noticed that
there was a need to make them more inviting to
our new members. So instead of just suggesting that
“someone else” start contacting new members to
invite them, Stephanie took it upon herself to help
create the new member welcoming committee and
drive the program to do emails
and phone calls to our new
members each month, to personally invite them to our monthly
social events. The results speak
for themselves: record-setting
attendance at the Monthly Socials
AND immediate interaction for
our new members with the club.

t officially
became Spring
a couple of
weeks ago, and
not a minute too
soon. It has been
a cold winter,
and it’s time to
get out for some driving events.
Monterey, California, promises to
sell out pretty quickly. The West
Coast Parades draw some of the rarest Porsches in the country, and the
weather on the Monterey Peninsula
in June is nearly perfect. For more
info, go to parade2014.pca.org.
April is when the driving season
begins in earnest. The third Drivers’ Ed event takes place on the
weekend of April 12 and 13, and
another Sunday Drive (although
this time on a Saturday) promises
a fun tour to Muenster for their
annual Germanfest. What better
place to show up in a Porsche?
Closer to home and closer in
time (May 2-4) is the second annual Carrera of the Americas Club
Race, taking place at the Circuit of
the Americas, southeast of Austin.
Once again, Maverick Region
has teamed up with Hill Country
(Austin) and Lone Star (Houston)
Regions to put on a PCA Club
Race at one of the premier racing facilities in North America.
By the time you read this, registration for the Porsche Parade will
have opened (April 1). If you plan
to go, I hope you have already
registered, because this one, in

Coordinator for this year’s COTA
event. It takes lots of volunteers
to put on a Club Race, and volunteering is an easy way to get
close to the action. To see what

the 30th All British and European
Car Day, dyslexically referred to as
ABCDE, celebrates 90 years of the
MG and the 50th anniversary of

on Sunday, May 4 at Dryfuss Club
Point in White Rock Lake Park. For

Gimme a Minute: March Board Meeting

for several Chairs
who were MIA.
Social Chair Tracy
Robertson reported that a group,
including husband David and
Charlie Davis, are working on Flickr
and alternate ways to display photos
online. Membership Chairs Tom
and Susan Froehlich report that we
hit an all-time membership high at
1,419 primary members, thanks to
calling and emailing efforts, especially by Stephanie Ho. Monthly
Dinner Social Chair Paul Ramos
said that Uncle Julio’s was a huge
success and is looking forward to
the March event at Tolbert’s Restaurant in Grapevine. Charity Chair
Chris Hamilton wanted to check
to make sure the monies were sent
to the Hope Shelter for Founders’
Day, the Holiday Party, etc. Treasurer Jim Falgout is working on it.
John then took off all his other
hats and reported that the Velocity
Channel will be showing a special
feature about the Fifty Years of
the 911. He also passed along
information regarding the Street
Survival Course, now sanctioned
and encouraged by PCA National.
We’ll look to have an event soon,
once we find a chairperson.
The Club Race at Circuit of the
Americas is definitely happening. Don Sebert has agreed to
be our volunteer coordinator,
and he asked that anyone who
is interested in volunteering can
register at register.pca.org.
John had some bad news to share.
When we first started the Macan
6 April
raffle, the estimated retail value of
the vehicle was considerably less
than it is in actuality. Even after
Autobahn Porsche reduced the
price and taxes for us, we ended up
taking a loss on the raffle overall.
We will uphold the outcome,
but unfortunately have nothing
to send to charity afterwards. It
was disappointing, but unavoidable, despite our best efforts.
Editor Carey Spreen thanked
Linda Bambina for her tremendous help getting Slipstream out so
early, even though February was
a short month. He will be increasing the number of printed issues,
since membership keeps going
up. He also brought a portable
theater to show us the premiere
episode of “The Car Guy” show,
featuring our February DE event.
Linda Bambina mentioned
another glitch with Slipstream this
month involving the database. She
worked with Andy Mears to find
solutions around it and ended
up cleaning up the database of
long-gone advertisers and unpaid
“subscribers.” She also mentioned
that April 1 is the opening day for
the Monterey Porsche Parade!
Concours Chair Andy Kay is working on May at Mayo’s and is looking
for help to set up before the event.
He convinced Ed Mayo to write
something about the Early 911S
group, similar to recent write-ups
about 928 and 356 clubs. He is
encouraging the 928 club to embrace PCA and Maverick Region.
Michael Vatter has come to
several meetings recently, and
has agreed to have his company
sponsor next year’s All Member
Party. We were all floored and
grateful for his generosity!

Treasurer Jim Falgout reported
we are in good financial status
with ~$70K in the bank.
New Guest Attendee Richard
Salomon from Tyler was there. He
shared his thanks for Slipstream
keeping him in touch. He has
some great east Texas drive ideas
that he will be sharing with John
Harvey. He attends a Cars & Coffee in Tyler and will invite other
board members to go next time.
Rally Chair Don Sebert has
scheduled a rally for mid-July that
will start early in the morning
and finish at a lunch location to
avoid the heat. Details TBD.
Sunday Drive Co-Chair Brendan
Eagan mentioned that the March
Sunday Drive, nicknamed the
Chicken Run, will depart from
Duncanville and end up at Babe’s
in Cedar Hill. They have been
providing some printed maps showing major turns to keep people
from getting lost. On Saturday,
April 26, they’ll tour from Lewisville to Muenster for Germanfest.
Lederhosen is optional. They
are grooming leaders for smaller
drive groups to help everyone
arrive safely at speeds they like.
Drivers’ Education Chair Chris
Tabor said the first event of the
year was a great success, with strong
financials coming from the event,
despite some extra expenses for
headset cords and cases. We’ll have
two events at Eagles Canyon this
year. The April DE is on the 3.1mile course at MotorSport Ranch.
He received positive feedback from
February. Sponsorship Chair Daren
Kirbo is working with sponsors to
possibly include water at events.
Our website is up to date. Andy
Kay mentioned he thought the
Green group parking at the Feb event was a great idea.
We’ll do the same at the March event the following
weekend. He’s working on a “Taste of the Track” event.
AX/TT Chair Travis Howard announced that Mayo
Performance is again sponsoring the Autocross series.
Sunday, March 2 was the first event of the year, and
despite the cold, nearly 30 attended. The event was finished by 12:30 as the temp dropped to 22° with sleet
and freezing rain. The next event will be the May 18 AX
school and then an Autocross on May 25.
DE Registrar Wendy Shoffit mentioned changing the
DE stickers slightly, which seemed to be an improvement. She asked if we should continue the lanyard and
plastic pouch packets, which everyone was in agreement about.

Five-Speed Chatter: Krönung Einer König: “Crowning of a King”

M
y beautiful 2.0L 914 turns
40 this year, and it is still
running strong! Keeping up
with the oil changes, cleaning the air
and fuel delivery components, and
smart driving has greatly increased
the life expectancy of this car. I truly
believe I will have this car (or at least
a 914) for the rest of my life, and apparently I am not
alone. I recently had a chance to look back on some
articles produced in the 1970s (my Grandpa’s old stash
of Porsche Panorama, Motor Trend, and Road and Track
magazines), and was delighted to see that the car was
predicted to be reliable and long-lived even back then.
In a small dealer pamphlet that I found tucked between some pages, I learned that the base 914s coming
off of the line were stickered at reasonable $3,500 and
came with a 1.7L Volkswagen-built flat four engine.
I also learned that the first set of cars built in
1969 came in just two varieties: the 914/4, and the
slightly bigger and more expensive 914/6, which
originally used the 2.0L flat six engine previously
found in the ‘69 911T. Despite some increases in
engine capacity and a few dimensional changes,
the 914s stayed relatively unchanged throughout their entire production up to 1976.
Amazingly, many 914s have survived the competitive
world of automobile manufacturing and have stayed
driving on the highways. Better yet, many more 914s
are given a chance at a new life and are being restored
in garages and shops all across America. Whether one
is a buyer or a restorer, the drawing factor of these
little cars will always be their mechanical reliability, and
the fact that they can be customized from head to toe.
With a little ingenuity almost any 911 engine Porsche
has produced can be squeezed into the uniquely located engine bay. Internet sites with classifieds sections
and parts listing are flooded with 914 flared fenders,
slant nose packages, and front and rear spoilers that
can be purchased and mixed/matched for one’s own
aesthetic and aerodynamic preferences. I have even
read about people who are swapping out the small
VW engines for larger more powerful Chevy V8 and
Subaru flat engines -- talk about a jet powered go-cart!
Porsche also tinkered with the 914 during production. They tweaked the styling lines of the 914/6

and GTs each year, and in 1969 even fitted a couple
914s with a 908 flat eight racing engine. One of
the most disappointing scrapped projects relating to the 914 was the heartbreaking rise and fall
of the 916. In 1972 this Porsche was produced
with a 2.4L engine, and its flared fender bodywork was borrowed from a racing 914/6 GT.
my chances of restoring to Concours level are well
beyond my budget. I believe a 914 should be crowned
as a Porsche; it is everything a Porsche is. It is stylish,
fast, agile, and extremely fun to drive! What more
does a 914 need? The correct engine code numbers?
The 916 was supposed to be the super luxurious
version of the 914. It came with a cassette player,
real leather interior, smooth bodylines, and beefier
engine, but with a price of $14,000-$15,000 (close to
the base 911of the time), no one took a bite. Unfortunately only one US Spec 916 officially made it to
the states; it was purchased by Peter Gregg of Brumos
Porsche+Audi in Florida. I wonder where it is now . . . .

Another shocking bit of information I gathered is
that none of the 914s that came from VW’s Wolfsburg
or Porsche’s Zuffenhausen came with a Porsche crest
installed on the front hood. Because the cars didn’t
come with one originally, slapping a crest on a 914
sparks up controversy between true Porsche Gear
Heads. It’s funny; I have found, through personal
discussions and forum surfing, that the people opposed to adding the crest are not just the “original
only” guys, they are the same
people who wouldn’t accept the
914 as a Porsche in the first place.
I understand and sympathize with
what the antique “all original”
guys are saying, and if my car
was in pristine condition (like
the one in the December 2013
edition of Panorama) I probably
wouldn’t have installed the crest.
But my car is not pristine, it has
miles, rust, missing parts, and a
little customization from previous owners -- so much so that
For those that want to place a crest on a 914 or fix/
replace another model’s crest, the steps of installation are quite simple. PelicanParts.com provides a kit
with everything you might need to replace or install
your new crest. For my car I had to measure out
the positioning of the crest and mark my measurements with painters tape. With a template, which is
downloadable, I marked where I was going to drill
out the two holes for the prongs on the back of the
crest. I started my incision with a small drill bit and
worked my way up to the bigger size that led to the
final fitting. To prevent rust, I applied a little touch-up
paint to my newly-drilled holes and waited for it to
dry before I placed the crest on the hood. To keep
the crest in place, it is fastened with two end caps
(which look like nuts) that just thread themselves
onto the prongs on the underside of the hood. When
the seal is snug around the crest, and the emblem
firmly situated on the hood, your work is done.
The first few glances of the car
made me feel weird. It was mildly
related to buyer’s remorse, but
nowhere near as strong. Having
the crest took a week or so to get
used to, but now I can’t imagine
what the car’s hood would look
like without it. The 914 is a significant part of Porsche History, not to
mention the predecessor of the
Boxster, Cayman, and the spectacular 918; it deserves to be displayed
and crowned, like its contemporaries, as a King!

11 times in their first 22 years
of marriage. In each home,
Adrienne redecorated the house,
while Andy fixed up the garage.
It all started in Arlington in 1986.
Andy just wanted a clean garage floor,
but you know how that goes. The
project took on a life of its own: epoxy floor, freshly
painted walls, new lighting, and then, they moved!
Flower Mound got all that plus track lighting. A TV was

After seven garage overhauls, Andy wasn’t anxious
to remodel for the next homeowner, so when they
moved to Kennedale . . . he waited. Well, after six
years, the wait is over! Adrienne says they’re not
moving – ever! Good thing, because Kennedale has
its own Man Cave adjacent to the three-car garage.

added in Sugarland, and Kansas City got a 10-ft Detailers bench. Des Moines even had a drain for indoor
car washing. The best garage was in Arizona with a
Griot’s theme. The last home, Katy, had a detached
garage with air conditioning and wall-to-wall carpeting!

Commentary from the Left Seat: The Great Texas BBQ Tour, Part I

ars, food,
and Rock
& Roll.
Kinda sounds like
a song from the
Clash or the Sex
Pistols. Music history is rife with the
connection: Beach Boys, Sammy
Hagar, Rush, and even Queen got
into the act (“I’m in Love with
my Car”). There’s a connection
between cars and food. Really? You
have to ask? Drive-Thrus, Drive-Ins,
and the ubiquitous cup-holders
in both front and back seats say
a lot! Man, we are a mobile foodconsumption society. If we Americans can eat it, drink it, or listen
to it, we do it in our automobiles.
So that got me thinking -- okay,
not thinking too hard, but at least
engaging a few brain cells -- that
a road trip was in order. Two of
the ingredients for the road trip
were BBQ, and Austin’s South
By Southwest (SXSW) music festival; the third one was my 2006
Cayman S. Needing a passenger
(notice I did not say co-driver),
my older son Nick filled the bill.
He was on Spring Break from
college, so he was pressed into
service as my partner-in-crime.
No surprise to me, I did not have
to push too hard. The tempting
combination of BBQ, loud music
and a few days in Austin were all it
took. He did not even pester me
to drive the CS, probably because
he still hasn’t learned how to

drive a stick. Dangling keys in
front of him? Not interested. The
lure of being the cool dude in a
Porsche hasn’t caught fire. Then
again, he’s six-foot-seven-inches
tall and finds it difficult to fit in
the driver’s seat comfortably. He’s
tried, but it’s hard to drive with
his knees splayed on either side of
the wheel, pressing into the dash.
We Texans are passionate about
our BBQ. But, let’s face it, we tend
to be passionate about most things
in this great state. We love our Q
as much as the folks in Kansas City,
Memphis or the Carolinas. KC
may be about the ribs, Memphis
about their meat rubs, and the
Carolinas about the difference in
sauces, but here in Central Texas,
it’s ALL about the brisket. Heck,
there’s even a great debate about
sauce vs no sauce (drawing out
fierce arguments along the lines
of whether or not to cook Chili
with or without beans). Like I said,
we tend to be passionate bunch.
Legend has it that the best brisket
in the state is located in the Austin area. Our very destination.
And music? Well Austin is said
to be the live music capital of the
world. And during SXSW, maybe
even the galaxy. Two thousand
bands in six days! Are we crazy?
No. This is Austin after all. Every live-music venue in town is
booked, solid. Bands stack on top
of each other, a new band every
hour, on the hour. Bands line up
outside a club, instruments out
of cases, ready to take the stage.
Name your favorite music! Rock?
Does a 911 have a flat-six motor?
Hip-Hop? More than you can shake
a stick at! Country and Western? If
two-stepping is your thang, you’ve
got it. Norwegian Speed metal?
Hmmm, maybe a band or two.
There’s even a sprinkling of classical and jazz. Every musical base
is covered. The food trucks, not
wanting to be left out, get in on
the frenzy, too. They have bands
packed onto tiny stages, with a few
chairs and tables crowded around
their trucks for good measure. I
think that if people had cleaned
out their garages and didn’t mind
strangers trekking in to use their
restrooms, they’d be roped into
letting bands perform there too.
I downloaded the SXSW and
Texas Monthly BBQ apps onto
my iPhone and got ready for the
trip. The Cayman S had fresh oil
and fluids, everything topped up
and checked out; even the lug
nuts were torqued correctly. All I
had to do was gas up. Nick and I
packed light, as we’d be staying at
a friend’s house and didn’t need
dress clothes for BBQ and Rock &
Roll. Besides, we’d have looked out
of place, and my son would have
disowned me. The CS is perfect for
such a trip, as its two large trunks
swallowed our gear; my stuff in the
back trunk, Nick’s in the front.
We piled in and headed south.
Normally I like to stay off Interstate 35, as it’s one crazy stretch
of road, but we got a late start and
needed to get to Taylor, about
twenty-nine miles NE of Austin,
before it got too late. The CS is a
capable highway cruiser. Stock HP
is 295, but I’ve done a handful of
mods to bump the power up a bit: a
racier exhaust, a motorsport intake
and an under-drive pulley gives the
car a spot over 300 HP. It has plenty
of power to pass lumbering trucks
or get clear of tightly-packed traffic.
At highway speeds it’s comfortable and not that loud either,
since I removed the previous race
exhaust. I must admit I loved the
sound of that race exhaust, at the
track. The other 99% of the time?
Not so much. You had to shout to
your passenger to be heard and
playing music? Forgetaboutit!
One more salient feature about
driving the CS -- and, for that matter, the current crop of Porsches
-- the A/C system is awesome.
Increase the fan speed a couple of
clicks and presto, the cabin cools
off. Amazing. Especially amazing,
as I fondly recall the A/C system
on my old 930. It blew a tiny whiff

of faintly cool breeze on a day
when the ambient temperature was
already in the low 70s. Anything
hotter than that? Sweat city. So
we set the Satnav, cranked the
A/C, put on some music from
a band that I had never heard
of (but were playing at SXSW),
and pointed the car south.
Next month, we come face to face
with a mountain of smoky BBQ.

A Richard Feder, from Ft. Lee,
N.J., writes to say, “Hey, Roseanne,
what’s with this cone incident on
the George Washington Bridge? I
live in Ft. Lee. In fact, I can see the
bridge from my apartment. And
I can say it’s bumper-to-bumper
every morning, noon and night.
Sometimes all morning, noon and
night. You don’t need to close a
lane in order to create a traffic
jam. And you certainly don’t need
traffic cones to do it. You just wake
up in the morning, and it happens,
like the sun rising in the east.
“And now, my neighbors and I are
enduring all these tourists, these
rubberneckers, these souvenir
hunters, these TV news crews,
these subversive political animals,
pouring into our nice, bucolic
burg, all looking for evidence
that Chris Christie was here.
“What can we do?”
Hey, Richard, who told you
to live in Ft. Lee? It’s a free
country, isn’t it? You can live
anywhere you want. Why there?
Why do people who live near
airports complain about the air
traffic? Why do people who live
near bridges complain about the
car and bus and truck traffic?
And here’s something to ponder. Do you know which came
first? Do you have any idea what
your nice, high-rise apartment
with the view of the bridge was,

before your town was paved over,
to make way for progress? Here’s
what it was: an amusement park!
Yeah! And not just any amusement park. It was Palisades Park.
And there was even a hit song
about it. Down at Palisades Park.
And you probably thought the
song was sung by Lou Christie,
didn’t you? Who you think is a
long-lost relative of your current
sitting governor? Now, that would
be real poetic justice, wouldn’t it?
But it’s not true. It was sung by
Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannon.
How’s that for irony, Mr. Feder?
No, Mr. Feder, your real problem
is the Coneheads. That’s right,
Mr. Feder, people who steal
cones and set them up in parking lots, creating all sorts of zigs
and zags, totally ignoring parking
spots and arrows and entries and
exits. These are the people you
really should be worried about.
Because, do you know what these
people do with their cones, after
they’ve set them up in weird patterns in parking lots? They put
them on their heads. And then they
walk around, talking like robots,
and saying they’re from France.
I’m not kidding, Mr. Feder. It’s
scary. They can’t help it. And
neither can our Immigration and
Naturalization Service. Because,
you see, they’re not from France
at all. They don’t speak French.
And they’re not from here either,
because they don’t speak American. They don’t belong here.
There’s your issue, Mr. Feder.
There’s a real issue for you.
Now, here’s the kicker for you,
Mr. Feder. Do you have any idea
what the Coneheads did, before
your nice, bucolic high-rise
apartment in the sky was created? That’s right, they set up
their cones in the Palisades Park
parking lot, on days when the
amusement park was closed.
Which is why they’re back, storming around your town and your
bridge. Mr. Feder, you need to
have mercy on these souls. They’re
lost. Lost. Because they can’t find
their way home. First they put up a
parking lot. Then the city was gone.
Can you blame them?
But there’s more. Coneheads drive
fast cars. And they drive cars fast.
And their cars all have sunroofs.
And the sunroofs are always open.
So their cones can have headroom.
Do you drive fast, Mr. Feder? I
bet you drive something like a
beater Corolla. Which is good for
one thing: sitting in traffic on the
George Washington Bridge. I want
to walk up to you and knock on
the window and say, hey, mister,
I, Roseanne Rosannadanna, am
walking beside you. And I’m
keeping up. Don’t you think you
can go a little faster? I want to
get to where I’m going before
I’m too old to know I got there.
I walk up to Corvette owners, and I
say, hey, stud, where are you going?
I walk up to Porsche owners, and
I say, hey, wo gehst du hin? I don’t
say, hey, ou allez vous. They’re
not from France, Mr. Feder.
That should be a clue for you.
Jane: That’s enough! Enough!
Roseanne, you, madam, are out
of time. And you’re out of mind.

Maverick Monthly Social: Mavericks Put the “Happy” in Happy Hour

Y
eah, I know. We officially changed
the name to “Maverick Monthly
Social,” but it’s still Happy Hour
to me. We had 52 happy Porsche
owners attending February’s event
at Uncle Julio’s in North Dallas.
A great turnout! I think we taxed
the Uncle’s staff to the max.
I guess that’s what impresses me most about the club
-- happy people. Since Barbie and I transferred to
the Maverick Region from Houston last year, we’ve
been impressed by the great folks that we have met
at each event. In fact, there are so many friendly
people that we can’t remember all their names. I
guess that’ll come with time and attending more
events. Maybe we need a mug book to help us out.

They all agreed that we had the edge in hospitality.
One of those newbies was Walter Otstott. He said
that, while he thinks we are a little ahead of the Audi
group, he had to add that they threw him a birthday

918. Just sayin’. Walter is also a member of the Ferrari club, and says we still have a little work to do.

sounds like a fun meet. The first Saturday of each
month, Exotics on the Rocks is held at The Back
Nine in Addison. It starts at noon and goes until
everyone leaves. All exotics are welcome, including
all Porsches. There are also prizes for the best car.
We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at the next
Happy Hour -- I mean Monthly Social -- at Trinity Hall
Irish Pub and Restaurant on Mockingbird Lane, on
April 17. If you see us, say hi, and say your name really
s-l-o-w-l-y. Maybe we’ll remember it this time.
