haam annual report 2013 - Health Alliance for Austin Musicians
PHOTO BY BRENDA LADD PHOTOGRAPHY HAAM ANNUAL REPORT 2013 www.myhaam.org Dear Friends of HAAM: The year 2013 brought many changes to the health care landscape in our nation, our community and to the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM). But through it all, HAAM’s core values and mission remained rock solid. We love Austin. We love live music. And we love what HAAM does for Austin’s musicians. Two major changes affected HAAM in 2013. First, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) began to take effect—opening new doors for many HAAM members to obtain health insurance. Although some people thought that the ACA might reduce the need for HAAM, nothing could be further from the truth. Because Texas did not follow many other states and expand its Medicaid eligibility, more than 60% of current HAAM members still need HAAM to access affordable health care. Additionally, the ACA does not usually provide the dental, vision, hearing and other health care services that are currently available to HAAM members. The second major change for HAAM in 2013 was the departure of our much loved, longtime executive director, Carolyn Schwarz, who deftly guided the organization for eight years. We wish her well and welcome Reenie Collins to our team as executive director. A native Austinite with deep roots in the health care and non-profit community, Reenie is passionate about HAAM and its mission. Reenie has a long-standing history with the HAAM family and actually worked as a health care consultant to our founder Robin Shivers in 2005 when HAAM was being formed. Throughout all the transitions, HAAM members continued to receive expert care from our outstanding affiliate service providers: the Seton Healthcare Family (primary health care), the St. David’s Foundation in partnership with the Capital Area Dental Foundation (dental health), the SIMS Foundation (mental health), Estes Audiology (hearing care), Prevent Blindness Texas (vision care) and Whole Foods (wellness/nutrition). We are extremely grateful to each of these service providers and look forward to many more years of collaboration with them. As the chairman of the HAAM board, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to my fellow board members. We have one of the strongest boards in this community and are very blessed to have such strong leadership and support. I would also like to extend a special thanks to Liz Watson as she rolls off the board. Liz is a strong advocate for Austin’s musicians and we deeply appreciate her service to HAAM. Finally, thank you to the HAAM staff and the army of HAAMbassadors who work so hard to help raise the funds that support the work we do. I am so proud to be associated with HAAM and look forward to the year ahead. I have no doubt that HAAM will continue to adapt to meet any and all of the challenges that may lay ahead. HAAM “At a time like this when everyone is struggling with health care, Austin is ahead of the game. I wish that every town had a HAAM.” PHOTO BY WINKER WITHANEYE IN LOVE WITH HAAM…AND EACH OTHER HAAM members and musical legends, Lorrie Singer and Bradley Kopp have played music all over the world, but are proud to call Austin home. The couple joined HAAM in the early days of the program and have been loyal members and supporters ever since. Clinic in East Austin. “I really think Seton lives up to its mission statement,” Lorrie said. “Everything is built on their commitment to offer the best, most compassionate care possible to anyone and everyone. Dr. Buttrey genuinely cares and gives everyone the time they need.” Bradley credits HAAM with helping save his life and keeping his family from financial bankruptcy. In 2009, following a colonoscopy screening (ordered by his Seton doctor through HAAM), Bradley was diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer. “HAAM helped me get the operation I needed and the necessary radiation and chemotherapy from some really remarkable Seton doctors,” said Bradley, who is now cancer-free. When Lorrie needed knee surgery, HAAM was there to help. “I received excellent care from Seton that I could never have afforded without HAAM,” she explained. Lorrie and Bradley continue to write and perform together and understand the many challenges faced by working musicians. “It’s a hard life, but a rewarding life,” said Lorrie who also does studio work and voiceovers. Bradley, a lead guitarist who has toured with musical icons such as Alejandro Escovedo and Jimmy Dale Gilmore, is also a recording engineer and record producer. Lorrie and Bradley are both long-standing patients (and huge fans!) of Dr. Sara Buttrey, a general practice physician with the Seton McCarthy Community Health 4 “We live in a city that is enhanced by a vibrant music culture, but because of economic realities, that culture needs support to maintain and grow. If people don’t support programs like HAAM, they will go away,” Bradley said. www.myhaam.org “HAAM sends a clear message that Austin is a community that CARES about musicians.” PHOTO BY HIROSHI IWAYA THE HEALING POWER OF MUSIC HAAM member and jazz guitarist Margaret Slovak has lived all over the country, but Austin stands out among the pack. “Of all the cities I have lived in, Austin is the only one that offers such comprehensive support for musicians. Medical, dental, vision, hearing, mental health – HAAM has got it all,” she said. When Margaret moved to Austin in 2012 after ten years living and performing in New York City, she joined HAAM, mostly for the dental benefits. “HAAM has really been a blessing to me,” said Margaret, who has received care from Capital Area Dental Foundation dentist, Dr. Neal Shah. “I couldn’t afford dental care without it.” Another blessing came in the form of a workshop that HAAM organized last year on the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Margaret attended the workshop and was connected to a program that helped her navigate the ACA www.myhaam.org 5 and find a health plan that suited her needs. “The HAAM workshop was really helpful. I ended up finding a great, affordable plan and have HAAM to thank for pointing me in the right direction.” Although a relative newcomer to the Austin music scene, HAAM has helped Margaret connect with other musicians and find new opportunities to share her music. In addition to teaching and composing, Margaret plays at area senior centers, memory care units, hospices and other venues. Every Monday, she plays for patients undergoing chemotherapy at Texas Oncology. “It is amazing to have this program for musicians that makes everyone feel like they are not alone. I don’t feel like one little person trying to make a living as a musician. I feel like I am part of a greater community. “ 5 HAAM BENEFIT DAY: A MUTUAL LOVE FEST. Courtney Sanchez and Glenn Rexach at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf on HAAM Benefit Day 2013 The eighth annual HAAM Benefit Day was presented by Whole Foods Market on Tuesday, September 24, 2013. The citywide celebration of live music and the local musicians that make Austin the Live Music Capital of the World raised a record-breaking $361,000 for HAAM’s mission of providing affordable access to health care for uninsured, low-income musicians. The day featured 200 live performances by local bands across the city in locations ranging from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to clubs, restaurants, yoga studios, banks, office buildings and retail shops. The day culminated with the first annual ALL ATX–The Concert at ACL Live featuring an all-star lineup of musicians, including Christopher Cross, Eric Johnson, Jimmie Vaughan, Suzanna Choffel, Monte Montgomery, Charlie and Will Sexton and many more. The brainchild of local realtor and music benefactor, Gary Keller and Grammywinning producer, Randy Miller, All ATX brought together Austin’s talented musicians to support HAAM’s mission. HOW IT WORKS On HAAM Benefit Day, area businesses pledge five percent of the days’ proceeds or make a cash donation. In 2013, more than 289 businesses participated in the fundraiser. Local music lovers can support HAAM on HAAM Benefit Day by dining and shopping at these local establishments. Thank you to the entire community for making HAAM Benefit Day 2013 such a tremendous success. Thank you to event chair Keith Donahoe and to Christine Thompson with AMFM Studios for producing this year’s public service announcement featuring musicians, Marcia Ball, Erin Ivey, Kevin Russell (Shinyribs), Carlos Sosa and The Tripps and to Catarina Sigerfoos for her tireless efforts on behalf of HAAM. HAAM also wishes to thank Whole Foods Market for its long-standing support of HAAM Benefit Day and to our 2013 underwriters: Brown Distributing, The Brown Cup, C3 Presents, The Grainger Foundation, Keller Williams Realty International, South By Southwest, Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Association and Thundercloud Subs. The high-caliber music talent that is drawn to Austin is in part driven by the tremendous support musicians like Britny receive from organizations like HAAM. When Britny arrived in town, she was quickly embraced by Austin’s supportive community of musicians. She formed a band called Britny Lobas & Red Coral where she learned about HAAM from two of her bandmates. “I didn’t think something that cool could exist,” Britny recalled. “My dad was a professional musician who played five nights a week, but he never had anything like HAAM.” When Austin’s infamous allergies stole Britny’s voice, she used HAAM to get a steroid shot at a Seton clinic. “Before HAAM, I’d be worrying about whether I could afford to go to the doctor or if I needed to cancel a show,” she said. “With HAAM, I was able to see my doctor and perform that same night.” Britny has also used HAAM for an annual vision screening and free pair of glasses. She hasn’t used her dental or hearing benefits yet, but plans to get new earplugs soon to protect her hearing. “Just knowing that I can go to the dentist or get new ear molds without spending a week’s pay makes me feel safe. It helps me focus on being an artist and making a living.” 8 “Musicians do not bring in that much money. We can work six nights in a row, but still not make rent. When you donate to HAAM, you are feeding Austin’s soul and helping musicians play the music that we all LOVE.” www.myhaam.org PHOTO BY MARCOS MOLINA ONE BIG HEALTHY FAMILY East Cameron Folkcore is an 11-member band that prides itself on making a lot of noise. The band was formed in 2009 following a tragic fire that took the life of fellow musician and close friend, Jon Pettis. “East Cameron Folkcore is the phoenix that arose out of the ashes to pay tribute to our friend,” said lead vocalist and guitarist, Jesse Moore. Several members of East Cameron Folkcore have access to affordable health care through HAAM. Vocalist Allen Dennard credits HAAM and affiliate provider, The SIMS Foundation, for helping him get sober. “I was stumbling into all kinds of trouble,” Allen said. “I entered treatment when I found out I was going to be a father. That was my breaking point.” HAAM provided Allen access to an affordable psychiatric evaluation and prescriptions for antidepressants. “HAAM gave me access to resources that I did not know were available to me. Without HAAM, I know for certain that I would not have access to health care. I just can’t afford it,” Allen said. Vocalist and harmonica player, Blue Mongeon credits HAAM for saving his life. Following a bad fall, Blue needed emergency surgery to stop bleeding in his brain. “I am alive today because of HAAM,” he said. Blue, who has played music since he was six years old, is grateful for all the doctors and nurses who cared for him at Seton. Jesse Moore was a member of HAAM before enrolling in a low-cost plan through the Affordable Care Act (ACA). “I went to the HAAM office and they walked me through the process. But there are a lot of musicians out there that live below the cut-off line for the ACA and still need HAAM,” Jesse said. Like many Austin musicians, members of East Cameron Folkcore work one or more other jobs to pay the bills. Most of these jobs do not provide health benefits. HAAM makes it possible for this uniquely Austin band to record albums and tour together— all while staying strong and healthy. www.myhaam.org “East Cameron Folkcore is a big family. We play music because we LOVE to do it. That can be really difficult in today’s world. HAAM makes it possible to have the day jobs that we have and still play music and go on tour.” East Cameron Folkcore from left to right: Kristian Oubre, Dennis O’Donnell, Phil Patterson, Eric Lopez, April PerezMoore, Blake Bernstein, Blue Mongeon, Mary Beth Widhalm, Aaron Perez, Jesse Moore, Allen Dennard 9 CO R P O R AT E BATTLE OF THE BANDS 2013 CBOB Grand Prize winner, The Slakes, presented by HomeAway at Antone’s On April 26, 2013 some of Austin’s most unlikely musicians, including doctors, accountants and software engineers, took the stage at Antone’s on Riverside Drive to raise funds for HAAM. The blockbuster event raised nearly $74,000 to expand access to affordable health care for Austin’s low-income musicians. Sponsored by H-E-B and Cirrus Logic, the Corporate Battle of the Bands featured eight bands that showcased the musical talents of eight company’s full-time employees. The corporate sponsors and their competing bands included: Cirrus Logic, Superhet H-E-B, Knuckle Sammich CLEAResult, Gigawatt HomeAway, The Slakes Intel Corporation, Atomic Large Band St. David’s Foundation, The Healers Seton Healthcare Family, Both Feet Wenzel Spine, Gascans The eight bands were judged by a panel of celebrity judges including Kathy Valentine of the GoGos, rock and roll hall of famer Ian McLagan and KVUE Anchor Quita Culpepper. The Slakes, from Homeaway, took the grand prize, walking away with a day of recording time compliments of Austin’s Bismeaux Studio and four three-day passes to the ACL Festival. Other winners included best cover band, Atomic Large Band from Intel, best original band, Knuckle Sammich from H-E-B and fan favorite, Superhet from Cirrus Logic. Thank you to all the bands and the fans. Thank you to our sponsors, H-E-B and Cirrus Logic and to Bismeaux Studio, C-3 Presents and Strait Music for donating prizes for our winners. HAAM also wishes to thank the Corporate Battle for the Bands 2013 committee: Angela Dorsey (Chair), Jo-Dee Benson, Laurie Garrant and Dee Dee Dial. PRESENTING SPONSORS 10 www.myhaam.org WE LOVE OUR AFFILIATE SERVICE PROVIDERS HAAM is a unique collaboration that partners with some of the most innovative health care organizations in the city to develop a package of health care services available to each and every one of our HAAM members. A LITTLE HISTORY In the beginning, HAAM was conceived as a three-legged stool with the Seton Healthcare Family delivering primary health care, the St. David’s Foundation handling dental care and The SIMS Foundation providing mental health and substance abuse counseling. Thanks to generous donors like YOU, HAAM has been able to expand into a sturdy table complete with hearing care through Estes Audiology, vision care through Prevent Blindness Texas and wellness and nutritional counseling provided by Whole Foods Market. As HAAM moves into the future, we will continue to be flexible, nimble and responsive to the needs of our members. HAAM knows that just like with music, one size does not fit all when it comes to health care. Our dedicated staff love working with each of our musicians so that they find the best resources available for their individual needs. Here’s what a few of our member-musicians have told us about our affiliate service providers: “Getting real, useful hearing protection that I can use at any gig puts at ease a life-long concern I have had for preserving one of my most precious assets. I cannot thank HAAM and Estes Audiology enough. Your support is priceless to me.” “My SIMS Foundation services have been an important part of my life. I am making excellent progress with the SIMS staff and feel grateful for having HAAM in my life.” “If it wasn’t for HAAM and Seton I would not be playing music anymore. I have a genetic spinal condition that left me without the use of my legs last summer. After surgery and rehab, I am able to walk again with the support of HAAM and its amazing donors.” “I can’t put into words how good the HAAM St. David’s Dental Program has been for my life, my teeth, and my whole band, all five of us included. After a dental emergency I couldn’t sing with my front tooth missing, but my dentist had me back on stage singing two days later.” www.myhaam.org 11 WE LOVE OUR 2013 DONORS Foundations Alice Kleberg Reynolds AMD Foundation Austin Community Foundation Communities Foundation of Texas Creekmore and Adele Fath Charitable Foundation The Foundation for Dreamers Jewish Foundation of Memphis JP Morgan Chase Foundation The Moody Foundation St. David’s Foundation Stahl Family Foundation The Tomblin Family Foundation The Topfer Family Foundation Tried & True Foundation Benefactors ($5,000 and above) Apple Work Place Giving David and Deborah Bourke Cirrus Logic Vince Foster Gary Keller and Mary Pfluger Patrice Koen Odyssey Productions (ALL ATX) Robert Plant Supporters ($1,000 to $4,999) HAAM Development Council* Geoff Armstrong Authentic Smiles (Mouth by Mouthwest) Kevin Beadles Chili Cold Blood Cook Off Morgan Coy Design Build Adventure Bill Dickson The Driskill Hotel First Evangelical Free Church Donald Garcia Jr. Glenn Garland H-E-B Karen Jacobs JWH Communications Old Settler’s Music Festival Vincent Prothro Jason Rhode and Angela Dorsey Robert Richmond, III San Marcos Performing Art Association – Summer in the Park Liz Watson Scott Young Friends AM Technical Solutions, Inc. Your gift to the endowment will help create long-term sustainable funding for HAAM, something Robin strongly supported. To learn how you can help grow the endowment, please contact HAAM Executive Director Reenie Collins at 512-324-3414 or [email protected]. We love that over 8,000 working musicians call Austin home and that the music they create pumps more than $2 billion into our local economy. But did you know that most of these musicians work multiple jobs and struggle to pay for basic necessities like food, clothing and shelter? That’s where HAAM comes in. With your generous and loyal support, HAAM is able to connect thousands of low-income musicians with cost-effective medical, dental, hearing, vision and mental health care services that focus on prevention and wellness. Your donations make it possible for Austin’s low-income, uninsured musicians to access the affordable health care services they need to keep making the music that we all love. Spread the love to Austin’s hard working musicians and make a donation to HAAM today. You can feel good about your donation. For every dollar you donate to HAAM, we are able to leverage $7 in direct health care services for our member-musicians through the donated care provided by our affiliate service providers. For more information on how you can help keep music alive and well in Austin, visit our website at www.myhaam.org.
