Iltis, Rev birds eye panorama of the mouth of the Hai River
with the forts, fortifications and ships depicted and named,
BOMBARDEMENT DER TAKU FORTS 1900, 34.5mm (MH

SMS Iltis, the second ship of that name on the China station, was
880 tons, 1300 hp and carried eight 3.4in guns. Built in Gdansk and
launched in August 1898, she came into service 1 December 1898.
Her Commander, Lieutenant Wilhelm Andreas Jacob Emil Lans
(1861-1947), was wounded in the action. The Siege of the Legations
commenced on the 20 June 1900, three days after this action. Following
the outbreak of World War I, SMS Iltis was scuttled in Kiau Chau.

launched in 1896. Pte. Donker ended his career as a bugler in the Royal
Marines when he was discharged in February 1907. He re-enlisted in
the 18th Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps and was killed in action 1
November 1918 in Flanders, ten days before the Armistice. Estimate: US$300-400

Navy, served aboard the cruiser HMS Arethusa during the Boxer
Rebellion. HMS Arethusa was a Leander class protected cruiser,
launched in 1882 (4,300 tons). In the Great War he was present at
Jutland, before dying in Simonstown, S Africa in 1942 during the
Second World War, having been accounting officer to the Falklands
Islands Survey in British Antarctica. R R Hamer had risen to the
rank of Paymaster Commander. Sold with copy service records and a

The full title of the unit was the Singapore Volunteer Armoured Car
Company. Experiments were first made in 1927 to convert a Morris

mint state with full redness on the reverse and virtually
so on obverse.

Armoured Car section came into being. The section’s first armoured
car was also delivered in 1931 courtesy of the Singapore Harbour
Board, who built the body onto a 4 ton, six wheeler Albion lorry
with armoured plating obtained from the UK. It had ¼ inch thick
steel armour plating, armed with 2 Vickers guns, one operating in
each of the two revolving turrets. Whilst the crew consisted of a car
commander and six or seven other ranks, which included a first and
second driver. It was also a prerequisite that all car members had to
be interchangeable. Recruiting began in earnest in September with
the section commanded by 2nd Lt. C E Collinge and trained as part
of A machine gun company with a strength of 2 officers and 7 other
ranks. Due to its embryonic stage it was viewed as highly attractive,
however, all recruits had to have had prior service with A company
