Notes on NAEDA Dealer-Manufacturer Relations Survey 2014
Distribution – The NAEDA Dealer Manufacturer Relations Survey was mailed to selected dealers in the United
States and Canada in mid January 2014. The survey was conducted electronically through email distribution
and results were anonymously collected and tabulated by a third party research firm. Responses were
collected over a 15 day period that included three email reminders to non-respondents only.
The survey distribution list included over 10,800 dealers, both members and non-members of NAEDA
compared to a distribution of 9,000 the previous year. The distribution list was composed of 34% NAEDA
members and 65% non-members. Eleven manufacturers provided dealer lists and many others encouraged
their dealers to participate in the survey through their dealer communications. For control purposes the survey
was designed so that each respondent could only take the survey one time. Over 1,400 dealers participated in
the survey in 2014 compared to just over 1,000 in 2013 representing a response rate of 13% (16% members,
10% non-members).
Ratings – Each respondent had the opportunity to rate up to five manufacturers they represent selected from a
drop down listing of 64 manufacturers. Over 3,810 dealer ratings were completed compared to 3,043 in 2013
for a 25% increase. Most of the increase in dealer ratings were attributed to the OPE manufacturers where
there was a 108% increase in individual ratings. Ratings for Tractor and Ag/Shortline manufacturers were down
20% from 2013. Companies that provided dealer lists for distribution generally saw significant increases in
dealer ratings.
Dealers were asked to rate manufacturers on the 1- 7 scale in the following 12 categories:

7. Return Privileges
2. Product Availability 8. Communication with Management
3. Product Quality 9. Warranty Procedures
4. Product Technical Support 10. Warranty Payments
5. Parts Availability 11. Marketing & Advertising Support
6. Parts Quality 12. Manufacturer Response to Dealer Needs /Concerns
This report includes summaries of these 12 categories for 46 manufacturers. These brands received a
sufficient number of ratings to provide meaningful analysis of results. Each company’s mean score for each
category is measured against the mean for all 46 manufacturers combined in bar graph form. The averages of
evaluations of the categories are reported using the mean (simple arithmetic average) rather than the median of
the data. Comparisons are also made within each manufacturer’s classification: 1) Ag/Shortline Manufacturer,
2) Outdoor Power Equipment Manufacturer or 3) Tractor Manufacturers and are listed by rating rank for each
category with each manufacturer classification.
The report contains valuable feedback and information about the relationship between dealers and their
suppliers. Both the manufacturers and the dealers have found the data to have value for improving product and
service quality and for promoting top-ranked products to consumers.
Many manufacturers have used the survey results to promote their performance to their dealer network and
even to end-users. They have also used the results as a means to support change and improvements in their
organizations. Dealers have used the results to evaluate potential new product lines and companies to carry,
for competitive comparisons with brands they handle and to communicate areas of strengths and needs for
improvements of their represented manufacturers.
These survey results provide an accurate assessment of dealer attitudes regarding the company partners they
represent. However, it is important to note that the dealer ratings from NAEDA’s Dealer Manufacturer Relations
Survey represent an assessment of satisfaction captured in a moment in time. The results could change
relatively quickly due to a number of factors or situations.
