Après plus de 20 ans de scène, General Levy revient dans les bacs au printemps 2011 avec « We
progressive », un nouvel opus taillé sur mesure, qu’il qualifie lui même de « meilleur album de sa carrière ».
General Levy, véritable vétéran de la scène urbaine anglaise, a grandit sous l’influence du reggae et de la black
music. C’est très jeune qu’il se lance dans l’écriture et s’essaye au chant. Bien qu’influencé par la culture Fast
Style, il développe rapidement son propre univers musical.
C’est en solo et du haut de ses 19 ans qu’il acquiert une reconnaissance internationale puisqu’il se voit
récompenser de plusieurs Awards (meilleur album reggae, ‘Heat’ meilleur single et meilleur MC). Par la suite
son titre « Incredible », succès mondial classé dans le top 10 des charts Reggae, sera synchronisé dans
plusieurs films tels que « Ali G Indahouse » et « Seuls Two ».
Du Garance Reggae Festival au Summerjam en passant par le Chiemsee ou le Realbeat Reggae Fest, tous ont
été conquis par les prestations de ce « performer » hors normes. Les collaborations studio de General Levy ne
sont pas en reste : Capleton, Sly & Robbie, Chaka Demus, Desmond Dekker, Aswad, M Beat, Cutty Ranks ou
encore Danakil…
General Levy a composé le nouvel opus « We Progressive » d’une manière bien particulière. En effet, pour la
première fois, il a choisi de s’entourer de plusieurs musiciens afin de produire une œuvre éclectique et aboutie.
Il a fait appel au groupe français Papa Style et Baldas, duo multi instrumentistes de génie. A ces deux « riddims
maker » s’est ajouté la participation du dj et producteur Goloom pour la réalisation artistique. Enfin Mayra,
chanteuse franco-brésilienne du duo Mayra & Mr.Mow, est venue apporter sa touche de douceur sur les chœurs
de l’album.
A travers cette nouvelle œuvre on pourra apprécier la fluidité et l’aisance vocale de cet artiste hors du commun
sur des compositions aussi diverses que conceptuelles.
En effet l’album oscille entre le reggae et différentes influences : funk et hip hop avec les titres « Blow » et
« The love we got », un subtil mélange de rock et de ragga avec « Flipping and Flapping » ou encore latino
avec « Bomba rumba » ! Mais General Levy n’oublie pas ses racines roots et nous livre le magnifique morceau
acoustique « Friend in need ».
La participation d’acteurs français, artistes et producteurs, démontre bien la vivacité de la scène hexagonale et
son rayonnement à l’international. En effet c’est avec le label X-Ray Production que General levy a choisi de
travailler. On notera également les featurings de Balik, chanteur charismatique du groupe Danakil, ou encore
de Big Red, acolyte de Daddy Mory au sein de Raggasonic !
Cet artiste « crossover », à la fois « undergound » et « mainstream », nous livre un projet novateur ! Après
plus de trois ans d’absence, la sortie de son nouvel album « We Progressive », est un événement attendu par
ses fans dans le monde entier.
