SPEECH Chaska, Mounds Park Academy capture three golds each C haska won three medals in the Class AA competition of the 2015 Minnesota State High School League’s state speech tournament at Lakeville North High School. Mounds Park Academy accomplished the same feat in Class A. Class A Erhardt, Khalif, Tommy McCarthy of Adrian, Shane Price of Mankato Loyola, Molly Dunn of River Valley, and Matt Lockett of Cannon Falls all won coveted fourth medals this year. Eight other competitors also won third medals this year: Nicole Reigert of DilworthGlyndon-Felton, Abby Plumley of East Grand Forks, Nick Reed of Jackson County Central, Allison Leopold of Mounds Park Academy, Emma Stacy of Mounds Park Academy, Hannah Sorenson of TrekNorth of Bemidji, Matthew Koring of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, and Grace Steward of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley. In addition to Komaragiri and Bau, 21 other returning medalists also earned their second medals this year: Jodi Dents of Adrian, Katie Hieserich of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, Molly Tengwall of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, Matt Breuer of Cannon Falls, Katiana Fischer of Fairmont, Peter Nielsen of Fairmont, Julia Okerman of Fairmont, Knute Oldre of Luverne, Will Cipos of Mankato Loyola, Charlie Stejskal of Maple Lake, Erin Hackenmueller of Milaca, Collin Stumpf of Minnewaska Area of Glenwood, Kate Folkman of Morris Area, Alyna Kleinwolterink of Morris Area, Christopher Molenaar of New London-Spicer, Lily Satterlee of Sauk Centre, Chloë Litts of Staples Motley, Hailey Bruns of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, Bradley Foster of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, John Murphy of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, and Masen Virginia of Wrenshall. Mounds Park Academy and Cannon Falls Earned seven medals apiece this year and Fairmont and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley followed with six apiece. With medals awarded to as many as eight top finishers, 49 schools were represented by students awarded medals for their 2015 state tournament performances.There were 186 teams that competed in Class A this year. Walker-Hackensack-Akeley still tops the Class A list with 40 state champions between 1969 and 2015, which is good for a third-place tie on the list of Most State Champions-All Classes. Mounds Park Academy now has 33 state champions, which is good for fifth-place on that list. Walker-Hackensack-Akeley still tops the list of top medal-winning Class A schools with 232, and Mounds Park Academy has 150. Mankato Loyola had three medalists this year and the school now ranks third with 117. Of the seven returning gold medalists in the Class A field, three succeeded in winning another event in 2015. Sydney Erhardt of Cannon Falls was the only competitor to strike gold for a third consecutive year. She claimed her third consecutive title in Extemporaneous Speaking. It was also her fourth medal overall. Anagha Komaragiri of Fairmont and Andrew Grant of Mounds Park Academy were the only other competitors to win second titles this year. Komaragiri claimed her second consecutive title in Informative Speaking and Grant won his second in Serious Interpretation of Drama. It was the second title overall for Komaragiri and the third for Grant. Four additional defending champions were not so lucky in 2015. Neil Porter and Chloe Swanson of Wrenshall were looking for a second consecutive title in Duo Interpretation, but they fell short of qualifying for the finals. Heidi Bau of Murray County Central of Slayton and Munira Khalif of Mounds Park Academy were the final returning champions. Bau was looking to repeat in Extemporaneous Reading, but placed eighth in this year’s finals. Khalif won in Serious Interpretation of Poetry last year and earned runner-up honors in Original Oratory this year. It was Bau’s second medal overall and Khalif’s fourth. Behind Mounds Park Academy’s three gold medals were Sauk Rapids and Staples Motley with two each. In addition to Erhardt, Komaragiri, and Grant, the other 2015 champions are: Elijah Sams of Staples Motley in Creative Expression; Chloë Litts of Staples Motley in Discussion; Cam Pederson and Abby Plumley of East Grand Forks in Duo Interpretation; Christopher Molenaar of New London-Spicer in Extemporaneous Reading; Aidan Beckman of Cotter of Winona in Great Speeches; Jamie Jennissen of Sauk Centre in Humorous Interpretation; Jennifer Portis of Mounds Park Academy in Original Oratory; Lily Satterlee of Sauk Centre in Serious Interpretation of Poetry; Allison Leoplod of Mounds Park Academy in Serious Interpretation of Jamie Jennisen of Sauk Centre earned top honors in Class A Prose; and Molly Dunn of River Valley Humorous Interpretation with her rendition of Regina Flector Wins the Science Fair by Marco Ramirez. in Storytelling. The three returning champions were Puneet Arora of Chanhassen, Jack Ellis of Orono, and Sophia Miliotis of Roseville Area. Arora was looking for his second consecutive title in Informative Speaking and Ellis was looking to repeat in Serious Interpretation of Drama. Arora placed sixth this year, earning his second medal overall, and Ellis claimed runner-up honors, earning his third medal overall. Miliotis took top honors in Humorous Interpretation last year and placed second in Storytelling this year. This was also her third medal overall. Eastview of Apple Valley, Moorhead, Apple Valley and Chanhassen each won two gold medals. With medals awarded to as many as eight top finishers, 27 schools were represented by students awarded medals for their 2015 state tournament performances. 2014-2015 YEARBOOK & RECORD BOOK There were 69 Class AA teams represented at the tournament on Saturday, April 18. There were 114 Class AA teams that competed in speech statewide this year. With Apple Valley winning two gold medals this year, the Eagles have 84 state champions since 1969, the most in all classes. Eagan now has 60 state champions, good for second place on that list. With its 12 medals this year, Apple Valley still leads the list of top medal-winning Class AA schools with 363. Eagan, which won eight medals this year, is second with 278, followed by Forest Lake at 182. State Speech Tournament Medal Records — 1969-2015 A pple Valley in Class AA and WalkerHackensack-Akeley in Class A lead their respective classes in number of medals earned at State Speech Tournaments from 1969 to 2015. The year 1969 marked the first year in which a preliminary round and final round resulted in awarding medals to the top three place winners in 318 Speech each division. The first two-class competition was held in 1976. In 1979 the number of medals awarded in each of the 11 categories of competition increased from three to six. In 1989 the number of categories increased to 12. In 1990 medals were awarded to each of the finalists through eighth place. In 1993, the Dramatic Duo category 2014-2015 YEARBOOK & RECORD BOOK was added making the number of categories 13. In 2002 the format changed to qualify three entries from each section in each category, and having three preliminary rounds at the State Tournament before the finals. Since 1969 students from 405 member schools have won medals at the State Speech Tournament.
