Message from President
Dear Members,
I am writing this message with great gratitude to all members of our society and Victorian Hindu
community at large for providing an opportunity for me and my management committee to serve you
all at our best. We worked as a team and achieved many tasks such as improved sound system to
the temple, temple website to provide information through electronic means, car parking facilities,
catering services, periodic preventive maintenance, the advertising, organizing and completing
festival successfully. Festival such as New Year, Pongal, Thaipoosam, Mahashivarathri, Holi,
Telugu, Kannada New Year and Gudi Padwa are popular festival attracted by many devotees during
the 1st quarter of 2010. We continue to enhance multi-sponsorship for special poojas brought in by
the MC in 2006. This allows us to accommodate and give equal chance to all old and new members.
We successfully hosted delegates of the Parliament of World Religion for a reception and dinner.
There were many delegates from different part of world. For this purpose three members of our
society were assigned to work with HCCV. Our task of providing this services and helping HCCV was
purely for the PWR activities and not beyond that.
We have achieved another milestone by obtaining DGR status for Hindu Society School fund. The
Australian Taxation Office has provisionally approved this subject to minor changes to our
constitution. The Tax Department wanted the amended constitution before December 2010. We
propose to bring this amendment to the constitution at our next AGM scheduled for 29th August 2010.

The main entry to our web site is through http://www.hsvshivavishnutemple.org.au/. Note that there
is an alternate entry using http://hsvtemple.org.au/ skipping the prayers to Shri Ganapathi, Shri
Vishnu and Shri Shiva before entering the home page. Recently, the home page has been updated
to present rolling images with links to fliers for upcoming events at the temple. In addition User Home
Page, Spiritual Activities page, Cultural Services page and Canteen Services page have been made
more dynamic with the intention of providing more frequent updates.
Spiritual committee has stared Hinduism classes to promote Hinduism to promote Hinduism. It also
attracting many students. The temple library is functioning well.
We thank Multicultural Commission for supporting us by providing us with grants for all special
festivals.
We have given permission for expatriate employee who worked with us for more than five years to
apply for permanent residency. I am glad to say that our priest Shri Ragavan Battar and his family
has already obtained permanent residency on this process.
We are looking forward for more volunteers in our busy days. Interested person please contact our
manager and register your interest.
Our Chief priest Shri Premakantha Kurukkal case was closed about six months ago. But recently
based on the false information received that he was trying to flee the country, the Frankston
magistrate has requested Shri Kurukkal to surrender his passport to police and this case is coming
up for hearing on the 21st of April 2010.

Laksharchana
All of us have our desires and needs and we offer prayer to various Gods and Goddesses to
provide us health, wealth and prosperity. Various factors govern the destiny and our well
being is based on karma and other factors like the deeds of our forefathers, the pujas and
offerings we made to God, the sins we committed. It is our deeds (Karma) in this Janma
which can reduce the malefic effects and offering prayers to gods and goddesses can
reduce even remove the dosha of our previous births.
Goddess Lalithambika an incarnation of Goddess Parashakti is provider of health , wealth,
prosperity and all the worldly pleasures which one may desire and grants all boons to her
devotees and is pleased by stuti i.e. prayer and praise. It is written in scriptures that in
Kaliyuga, bhakti is the only source of hope for all human beings wherein offerings to
almighty in the form of Puja, Archanas, Abhishekam, homam (havan), etc can bring an end
to all miseries and bring prosperity to everyone.
Lord Dhanvantri the god of medicines helps us in removing all your diseases and protects
us from new diseases like swine flu and other deadly diseases.
Similarly, prayers to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva can remove all the malefic effects of our
previous births and sins committed by us or by our forefathers or any of our

Sahasranama (Sanskrit:सहस्रनाम; VDKDVUDQƗPDLVDW\SHRI Hindu scripture in which a deity
is referred to by 1,000 or more different names. Sahasranamas are classified as stotras, or
hymns of praise, a type of devotional scripture. Sahasra means a thousand, or more
generally, a very large number. Nama QƗPDQ PHDQV QDPH 7KH OLWHUDO WUDQVODWLRQ RI
sahasranama is "a thousand names".
A sahasranama provides a terse but encyclopedic guide to the attributes and mythology
surrounding a deity. There are also many shorter stotras, called ashtottara-shata-QƗPD
stotras, which have only 108 names.
A /DNVKƗUFKDQƗ involves the repetition of names one hundred thousand times. Laksha, in
Sanskrit, means one hundred thousand. This is an intensive version of the Sahasra-QƗPDDUFKDQƗ,WLQYROYHVWKHUHSHDWHGFKDQWLQJRIVDKDVUDQDPDVPXOWLSO\LQJWKHQXPEHU of the
performances by the number of the people who joined in the chorus.
To achieve this goal several people sit together and perform repetition of the names in
chorus. This continues for a prefixed time duration, usually for several days, chanting for a
certain number of hours each day. The recital of the different participants for the several
days adds up to at least 100,000 repetitions of divine names.[Source Wikipedia]
Shri Shiva Vishnu temple is performing Laksharchana for Shri Shivan, daily from 16th April
2010 to 26th April 2010. The last day of this event is being celebrated with 1008 Sangu
Abhishekam for Shri Shivan as a commemoration of third anniversary for
Mahakumbabhishekam. From 17th May 2010 to 27th May 2010 Shri Subrahmaniyar
Laksharchana is being . performed with Uthsavam on the last day.

HSV Cultural Heritage Centre
The Hindu Society of Victoria (Society) was founded in 1982 with the twin objective of
establishing a place of worship for the Hindu migrants of Victoria and also to establish a cultural
centre to provide an opportunity to advance Hindu Culture and to foster the religious educational
needs of the Community.
The Society established its spiritual and cultural precinct with the purchase of 14.3 acres of
virgin land at Carrum Downs Victoria, and in keeping with the desires of the community built a
beautiful Temple, the biggest of its kind in the Southern hemisphere that was duly consecrated
in 1994. All needs to be achieved now is the promotion and advancement of Hindu Culture and
Religious Education.
The Management Committees elected after 2000 took it upon themselves to realise the second
goal of establishing the Cultural Centre. The concept of a Hindu Cultural and Heritage Centre
was formulated. At the 2007 Annual General Meeting it was resolved to build the Cultural and
Heritage Centre (CHC).
The CHC is to house a School to teach Hinduism to the future generations, a Library to provide
reading, audio and video material for students and scholars of Hinduism, a Heritage Centre to
display exhibits that represent our ancient culture, a function hall for the Hindu Community to
celebrate weddings and other functions, a fully equipped industrial kitchen to cater for
Anndhanams, Cafeteria and other needs, and a modern Auditorium to meet the growing demand
for such a facility. The industrial kitchen will have a cafeteria to accommodate300 people and
can be also used as function area to celebrate small functions like birthdays and wedding
anniversaries. The Wedding Hall will accommodate 700 guests. The Auditorium is to
accommodate 1,200 invitees. The Auditorium will be built as Stage 2 and the rest will be built as
Stage 1.
The Society has engaged Genem Architects to design the CHC and to oversee its construction.
A project committee of volunteer Architects, Engineers, Accountants and Trade Persons manage
the day to day affairs of the project. The Project Committee has engaged subcontractors to build
the various segments of Stage 1. The foundations, ground floor slab and columns up to first floor
level have been completed. The first floor slab will be completed within next three months.

The estimated cost of construction of Stage 1 is around $7million. We have spent about $1.5
million on construction so far. These funds are mainly from the surplus revenue earned by
temple and catering activities. The Society has established Hindu Society of Victoria (Charitable)
Trust to raise funds for construction. The directors of the corporate trustee manage and
coordinate all fund raising activities. The following avenues are pursued to raise funds.
 Tax deductible donations: The Society has established HSV School Building Fund.
Donations to the funds are tax deductible.
 Naming Rights: Devotees who sponsor the total cost of constructing a section of the CHC
will be given the right to name that section with their choice of name provided it is acceptable
to the Management Committee of the Society.
 Prepaid Hall Hire: The Prepaid Hall Hire Vouchers, with a face value of $3001, entitles the
holder(s) to redeem the voucher to pay for the full hire of the Auditorium, Wedding Hall or
Small Function area for one occasion. These vouchers are transferable and have no time
limit. Flyers with full details are available at the temple office and a copy can be downloaded

 Loans: We are seeking interest free or interest paying loans from members of the Hindu
Community. The Society will enter into an agreement with the lender. If interest is required
the rate will be negotiable. The minimum amount we are prepared to borrow is $10,000.

on a plaque in the building as follows:

HSV Prepaid Hall Hire Program
The multipurpose hall that is being
constructed as part of the Cultural Heritage
Centre project by the Hindu Society of
Victoria provides facilities to host traditional
weddings, musical functions, condferences,
symposiums, musical and dance debuts
(arangetrams), birthday and anniversary
celebrations, HSV cultural functions such as
Holi, Deepavali etc.,. The project when
completed will stand as a testimony to the
aspirations of the Hindu Community of
Victoria. One of the many fund rising projects
undertaken by HSV for collecting the
necessary funds for the construction of this

In this fund rising scheme HSV is requesting
you to invest an amount which has sufficient
return for you. For example, you pay $3001
now and you are shielded against any price
rise in the hall hire charges indefinitely. This
is a very good investment which can even be
transferred to your children or given as a gift.

Sathyanarayana Pooja
Sathya Narayan is the Narayan form of Lord Vishnu. The Lord in this form is considered an
embodiment of truth. The Sathyanarayana pooja can be performed on any day during times
of achievements as an offering of gratitude to the Lord. These occasions include marriage,
graduation, new job, and the purchase of a new home to name a few. In addition, it is said
that a devotional performance of this pooja will bear children to couples trying to start a
family. In general, Sathyanarayana is worshipped with family and friends to ensure
abundance in ones life.
Performing this pooja in the evening is considered more appropriate. However one can do it
in the morning as well. On the day of the pooja, the devotee has to fast. After bathing the
person can begin the pooja.
The pooja starts by a prayer to Lord Ganesha, to remove all
obstacles that may occur as a result of incorrectly performing
the pooja. This is done by chanting all the names of Lord
Ganesha and offering prasad (a food offering, usually consisting
of one of Lord Ganesha's favourite foods - modak, a sugar and
coconut mixture, or ladu) and the showering of flower petals.
Another part of the prayer involves a prayer to the Navagraha's the nine important celestial beings in the universe. They consist
of Surya (the Sun), Chandra (the moon), Angaaraka/Chevaai
(Mars), Budha (Mercury), Guru aka Bruhaspati (Jupiter), Shukra
(Venus), Sani (Saturn), Rahu (the head of the Demon snake),
and Ketu (the tail of the Demon snake).
The rest of the pooja consists of worship to Sathyanarayana, an extremely benevolent form
of Lord Vishnu. First "panchamritam" is used to clean the place where the deity is placed.
After placing the deity in the correct position, Sathyanarayana swami is worshipped. Names
of Sathyanarayana are chanted along with offering of a variety of prasad (including a mixture
of milk, honey, ghee/butter, yogurt, sugar) and flower petals.
Another requirement of the puja is that the story of the pooja be heard among all those
observing and partaking in the pooja. The story involves the origin of the pooja, the benefits
of it, and the potential mishaps that may occur with the careless performance of the pooja.
The prayer concludes with an Aarti, which consists of revolving a small fire-lit-lamp in the
vicinity of an image of the Lord. After the pooja is over, participants and observers of the
pooja are required to ingest in the prasad that was offered and blessed by the Lord.
It is told that Sathyanarayana Katha (narrative) is in REVA volume of Skanda Purana. From
the story one learns that no one is higher or lower in status in the eyes of the Lord. Hence
one must accord respect to whoever it may be, who is taking the name of God.
On 2nd May 2010, the Sathyanarayana Pooja is being performed and all interested devotees
can participate in this ritual. However this pooja can also be sponsored by any person, family
or group on any day of their choice at the temple. The devotees may optionally utilise the
canteen services at the temple to offer lunch or dinner to their friends and relatives after the
pooja.

Hindu Society of Victoria has created a website to make all the information about the temple
and activities available at your finger tips. This also helps the temple manage its activities.
Although the management features are not currently fully utilized, some of it will reduce cost of
business as well as improves accuracy of information. The site allows one to sponsor special
pooja events at the temple.
Members and non-members can access and use the facilities offered at the web site. Members
will be able to access additional information such as Accounts and other HSV information.
Any one having a computer with internet
connections can access the HSV Web Site.

of temple the web site after offering prayers to
the Lords of the temple Vinayagar,, Vishnu
and Shivan.
The home page provides information about
the temple opening timings, scrolling list of
upcoming events and rolling images of
forthcoming major pooja activities. A mouse
click on the scrolling title or rolling image for
an a pooja event provides a pop up window
with details about the event.
With a mouse click on “Sign up!” any visitor can signup as a devotee at this web site by
providing details about personal profile and other private information. Note that all the
information provided is secure and totally private to devotees registering at this site. The
personal email id is used by the temple web administrator to send mails with the pooja calendar
updates.
Registered devotees are classified as HSV Members by the temple web administrator with a
change of their user type from devotee to member and the devotee Id with the Membership
Number. Note that the web site provides information to the HSV Members and Non-Members.
Members will be able to access HSV special information such as HSV Accounts and
Publications.
A Login using the User Name and Password presents the web site user with a dynamic User
Home Page. This page provides a message from the President along with details of recent
successful celebrations and major upcoming events. A mouse click on any past event leads to a
slide show presentation of photos of that event. The details of forthcoming major events can be
seen by selecting an upcoming event from the list.
In addition the information about Spiritual Activities, Community Services, Canteen Services and
the progress of Cultural Centre project undertaken by HSV is available at the web site. The
temple history along with the directions to reach the temple by public or private transport is also
hosted at this site. Another major attraction at the site is Temple Tour that presents the interior
picture of the inner temple sanctuary. Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple is unique in the diversity of gods
a devotee can offer prayers to.
All web site visitors have access to most menu entries. Only registered users can sponsor major
pooja events at the temple using credit/debit card payments. The web site provides secure
payment access using SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) support from the web hosts. All payments

HSV Spiritual Services
The spiritual subcommittee has currently undertaken to run the following programs:




Conducting Hinduism classes;
Improve and encourage the usage the HSV library
Organizing religious and spiritual lectures and workshops
Encouraging and arranging bhajan sessions at the temple by interested devotee groups
Hinduism classes for children have commenced on Sunday, 1st February 2009 with the
blessings of all mighty God. The classes are being conducted on First and Third Sunday
mornings between 10.30 am and 12.00 noon. At present, the classes are conducted in a
separate mobile office at the temple premises. Alternative locations will be considered in future,
depending on the number of participants and logistics.
The curriculum of the Hinduism classes is broadly based on religious stories, simple hymns,
practical devotion, obeisance, temple observances, as well as the meanings of rituals, sastras
and festivals etc.
The subcommittee is earnestly seeking the guidance, assistance and expressions of interest
from the religious scholars and other spiritual aspirants of the Hindu faith in relation to the
development and delivery of the curriculum.
In order to fulfil this aim, the initiative of the parents and volunteers are very welcome. We hope
that many will come forward and give their best to the younger generation.
Please enrol your children for the Hinduism classes and give them a good start in life.
The library usage is considerably improved by opening the library for the devotees use for three
days a week. We encourage every devotee and their family to join as a member and make of
the facilities for their benefit.
COMMENTS BY MAYURATHAN BALACHANDRAN, A STUDENT OF HINDUISM CLASSES
I am enjoying attending the Hinduism classes at Shiva Vishnu Temple in Melbourne. Hinduism
class helps me to learn and practice the Hindu way of life. We have lots of fun while we learn.
Every second Sunday we get together at the temple to learn more about god. The first thing we
do when we get there is discuss our homework from the previous lesson. Then we study a large
array of both stories and songs. We heartily sing songs as clearly as possible. During the middle
of the lesson we have a short break. Our teachers provide biscuits and juice for us. At the end of
the lesson when the parents arrive we sing the songs we have learnt so they can see what we
have learnt.

special mango was to be eaten by only one person and could not be shared. Lord Shiva decides
to set a race between his children and the winner of this race would get the mango. He tells his
children that the first person to circle the world would get the mango. Murugan gets on top of his
peacock and begins his journey. Vinayagar, saying that his parents are his universe, goes
around his parents three times and then says he has finished the task. Lord Shiva and Goddess
Parvathi were thrilled at his wisdom. They decide that he is the rightful winner and give him the
mango. The moral of the story is that the answer to a problem is much simpler than we think.
In our last lesson we have learnt about the Tamil New Year. Tamils go by the lunar calendar.
Every 60 years there is a cycle in which each year has a different name. The Tamil New Year in
2010 is known as Vikruthi year. The Tamil New Year is observed on the first day of Tamil the
month Chithirai, the first month of the traditional Tamil Calendar. The 1st of Chitirai is an
auspicious day for Tamil speaking people around the globe. In 2010, Tamil New Year is on April
14th. Tamils following Hindu religion go to Hindu temples and participate in special poojas during
the Tamil New Year.

Multi-sponsorship for Special Poojas
The temple caters for a very large Hindu community in Melbourne. Devotees are interested in
sponsoring for some of these special poojas. Traditionally the one who sponsored for such an
event continued to have exclusive rights to such events. In 2008, the then Management
Committee passed a resolution to accommodate the wishes of the community, by opening up
these special events for multi-sponsorships. However temple has been accommodating the
wishes of the previous sponsors and refused to accept the multi-sponsorships.
Current Management Committee wants the co-operation of all devotees so that every one who
wishes to participate to sponsor. Each multi-sponsor would pay the same amount as an
individual sponsorship. In some cases some individuals sponsor by arranging among
themselves to divide the amount. Management Committee does not restrict such practices, but
the one person who registered to sponsor as himself or family would be responsible for the fees
payable. Every multi-sponsor gets the same treatment as to an individual sponsor. Should an
individual wants to join with the family that is currently sponsoring, then that is their private
arrangement and the temple or Management Committee does not want to get involved in.
Sponsors will be notified by the manager if there are more than one sponsor for special poojas,
such as Brahmothasavams and other important festivals.
Management Committee hereby requests all sponsors and devotees to co-operate with this
multi-sponsorship arrangement and accommodate other co-sponsorships.

HSV Canteen Services
HSV Canteen is operating successfully for many years with the support of many industrious
volunteers. The Canteen provides many authentic South Indian and some North Indian menu
items. Canteen supplies only vegetarian dishes prepared in a clean and hygienic environment.
As a result of the multitude of services offered by the volunteers at the canteen, we are able to
supply the delicious food to devotees and their friends and relatives at a reasonable price.
2XUFDQWHHQRSHUDWHVDVµ&DIp$QQDSRRUQD¶and provides various snacks and meals dishes in
µdine LQ¶ Dnd µWDNH DZD\¶ modes for the devotees. The opening hours of the Canteen are
provided in this magazine. It is normally open on the week ends to cater for the needs of many
young devotees that visit the temple to offer their prayers to deities and then satisfy their hunger
by eating at the Canteen. In addition many of these devotees also provide their services as
volunteers for the temple administration and canteen services.
Another major service offered by the canteen to devotees is to help the devotees in providing
lunch or dinner to their friends and relatives that are invited for special pooja events sponsored
at the temple. The lunch or dinner items are prepared and provided to the devotees so that they
can serve the meals at the temple premises at the end of the successful pooja celebration. The
normal meal pack costs $7 per person, and includes Rice, Sambar/dhal, Beans/potato curry,
Papad, Yogurt with plates and spoons/forks. An extra curry is provided at an additional $1 per
person.
The canteen also takes outside catering orders and on occasions organises delivery as well.
Such catering services may be for family functions such as wedding, naming ceremony or
community functions like senior citizens meet, cultural events or religious events etc., Such
catering service provides a meal package consisting of Rice, Sambar/dhall, Korma, Three
curries, Vada, Papad, Yogurt chilli, Salad, Payasam, Yogurt, with Serviettes, Spoons, Plates,
and Dessert bowls costing $14 per person.
The canteen service orders for meals at the temple premises or outside catering are undertaken
for a minimum of 75 persons at a time and will expect a 50% deposit at the time of ordering. An
order has to be made for such service at least three days before the time of service and can be
cancelled with at least 48 hours notice. The remaining amount of the order may be paid after the
completion of the service provision.

The canteen menu along with any changes in opening times are listed at our web site on the
Canteen Services selection. Due to the large number of devotees interested in our canteen
provisions, we are making lot of innovative improvements such as opening on public holidays.
The canteen was kept open for dine-in and take away services on easter Monday with great
success.
Our canteen seeks the support of our patrons to cooperate in maintaining the cleanliness in and
around canteen area. Please note that HSV could not be held responsible for any canteen food
consumed outside the temple premises, specially, if it is after being kept refrigerated.
