Mr. NDA Celebrates 20 Years
by Grace Tressler
Former Mr. NDAs: Where are they now?
Greg Young ‘14
Last year’s Mr. NDA Greg Young,
known for his hilarious towel skit, is
a freshman at Marquette University
training in the Navy Reserve Officer
Training Corps as a Marine option
midshipmen.
While NROTC keeps Young busy,
he still has time for plenty of extracurriculars like Ski and Snowboard Club,
Ultimate Frisbee Club, Ukulele Club
and NROTC basketball.
His favorite Mr. NDA act was Joe
Curtin’s “Make Them Laugh,” a song
and dance routine from the movie
Singing in the Rain.
Young recalled his favorite part
of Mr. NDA: “Getting to see the
progression from a contestant’s idea
turning into a reality and then somehow being able to pull it off the night
of the show.”
Young will return to Notre Dame
to crown Mr. NDA XX on Saturday,
December 5.
Jeff Lutsey ‘96
Jeff Lutsey, winner of the first ever
Mr. NDA competition, has been living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and
working as a Navy sailor trainer and
designing Navy propulsions systems
for the past 12 years.
Lutsey will soon be moving to
Door County where he will spend
time with his family and focus on the
family farm.
“I have incredible memories from
our first Mr. NDA celebration. I
vividly remember how anxious and
excited all of us were because we had
absolutely no idea what to expect,”
said Lutsey.
Lutsey will be returning for the December Mr. NDA reunion, an event
scheduled for Friday night before this
year’s show.
Kieran DeGroot ‘13
Mr. NDA 2013, Kieran DeGroot
is now a sophomore at Carroll University studying Exercise Science with
the intent of becoming a physical
therapist.
DeGroot is a multiple sport athlete,
busy with both soccer and track at
Carroll.
His favorite Mr. NDA memory is
from the year after he won, when he
returned to perform a “killer intro”
with other Mr. NDA Alum in 2014.
“Mr. NDA is a competition and at
New York City and Los Angeles to
maintain studios, as well as participating in New York Fashion Week but
still finding time for dance.
“My favorite memory from my Mr.
NDA contest would have to be feeling
You Need Is Love.”
“You can accomplish some amazing things when you're given the
right opportunity, like the stage at a
Mr. NDA competition,” said Connelly.
Hunter Yewman ‘10
Former Mr. NDA Hunter Yewman recently graduated from St.
Norbert College with a bachelor’s
degree in communication and a
minor in leadership studies.
Yewman is still located in Green
Bay but may move within the year,
depending on different job opportunities.
He described his Mr. NDA days
fondly and said his favorite memory
was “the countless hours I spent
practicing and laughing with my friends.”

times it can get pretty heated, but it's
SO much fun, and we all have a great
time. And at the end of the day, you
know all of the other contestants are
your boys and we'd all do anything for
each other,” DeGroot said.
Ross Warpinski ‘11
Mr. NDA 2011 Ross Warpinski
took his talents to the big stage after
Notre Dame by moving to Manhattan and pursuing a dance and stylist
career.
After attending the University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point for a year,
Warpinski got accepted to the Joffrey
Ballet School in New York City. There
he also began working for a celebrity
stylist.
Warpinski keeps himself busy in the
fashion industry, traveling between
the crowd’s energy and support for
every contestant from start to finish…
and maybe having a dance party as
my talent portion of the evening,”
Warpinski said.
Shawn Connelly ‘03
Shawn Connelly, a 2003 NDA
graduate and Mr. NDA winner, is
back home working as a Creative
Services Director at WFRV-TV in
Green Bay after traveling the world in
his twenties.
Connelly spent time in Thailand,
London, New York City and Alaska
before settling down again to work
and play music around Wisconsin.
His favorite Mr. NDA memory had
to do with his talent portion of the
competition, where the whole auditorium sang a “rowdy rendition” of “All

screenplays, making short films,

happen, he said.

NDA memories, from practicing his beachwear skit with Mrs.
Campbell to dancing to the Cha
Cha slide on the catwalk, and how

Seniors Kristen Burkel (left) and Maddi Tennity (right) auditioned and won the
opportunity to emcee Saturday night’s Mr. NDA competition.
Q: How do you feel about being
in front of a large crowd (full
auditorium) and do you have any
past experience?
Maddi: I actually emceed for Triton
Runway when I was a sophomore, so
I do have past experience being one.
It was a much smaller crowd, however.
I’m still even more excited to be doing
this in front of the whole school. I’ll
be nervous, but I think I’ll be fine.
Kristen: I do not have much
experience speaking in front of a
large crowd, but I am really looking
forward to it. It is obviously a little
nerve wracking to have so many
people watching you, but it will be a
lot of fun!
Q: What are you looking forward to
most about emceeing?
Maddi: I think the time commitment
will be the biggest struggle. It’s a

Kristen: Being a hectic time with
school, college applications and sports,
it is going to be a lot of late nights,
but I am definitely excited to be a part
of the show. For the actual show itself,
the biggest challenge is going to be
talking for the first few minutes. It will
take some getting used to.
Q: What will you bring to the
Maddi: I think I have a very
different personality that will serve
me well as an emcee. I tend to
be slightly sarcastic, but I’m very
talkative and can keep the crowd
interested. I think Kristen’s and my
personalities will go together very
well.
Kristen: Well, I am not very shy or
intimidated by large crowds, so I
think that will give me confidence
when I am on stage, but Maddi and
I are also very outgoing and I think
the crowd with enjoy our humor.
Q: What special skills do you
possess that will help to make Mr.
NDA a successful night?
Maddi: I tend to get very excited
and hyper, and I think that will
help me bring a good energy that
will rub off on the crowd.
Kristen: I am very positive and
outgoing and hopefully the crowd
can feel the excitement we have.
