HOW TO CHOOSE A WALK-BEHIND MOWER
Small Yard
Push Mowers
If your yard is 1/4 of an acre or less with flat land,
push mowers are a good choice.
Medium Yard
Self-Propelled Mowers
If you have a larger yard (up to 1/2 of an acre) or
have hilly terrain, consider a self-propelled,
walk-behind mower.
Here are three easy steps to help you
select the right mower.
STEP 1: Determine your mowing and
equipment needs.
Choosing the right lawn mower has a lot to
do with how you will use it. Although lawns
come in all shapes and sizes, there are
basically three different applications for a
lawn mower.
1. Simple mowing and trimming –
usually for small yards that are mown
frequently where no mulching or
bagging is needed; may also apply to
larger lawns where the majority of
more extensive cutting is handled by a
riding mower.
Equipment – Typically push mowers,
side-discharge, limited functionality.
2. Small, manicured lawns – Welltended lawns that are mown
frequently, where bagging and
mulching are important.
Equipment – push or self-propelled
mowers, with full functionality, ease of
use and convenient features.
3. Difficult mowing conditions – Areas
with hills, obstacles, large spaces,
wet, thick or tall grass.
Equipment – Rear-drive, selfpropelled, fully functional, wide cut.

STEP 2: Determine your cutting
power needs.
STEP 3: Determine what type of mower
is right for you.
The more cutting power a lawn mower has,
the more easily it will maintain the speed of
the blade delivering a consistent, quality cut.
Lower cutting power offers basic mowing on
a budget. Once you decide how you will use
your mower, buy the mower with the greatest
cutting power you can afford with the
features you need. Cutting power is a
combination of three things – engine size,
engine configuration, and mower
configuration.
Gas-Powered Mower
• Great for tall, thick grass and
rough terrain.
Engine size – in combination with the engine
configuration, the size of the engine is the
most important factor in how the mower
handles demanding jobs. Engine size is
measured in ccs (or cubic centimeters). The
more ccs, the more cutting power the
engine provides.
Electric/Cordless Mower
• Lightweight, quiet, and nearly
effortless to start and maintain.
Engine configuration – lawn mowers
equipped with engines designed with
overhead valves offer more power than those
without OHV engines regardless of size or
configuration. OHV engines run more
smoothly and efficiently, and are quieter
and better for the environment.
Mower configuration – the deck is the area
of the lawn mower that houses the blade. The
larger the deck, the longer the blade and the
more area you can cover with each pass. A
larger deck can reduce cutting time but may
require more power to be effective, so look
for a larger OHV engine on a larger deck.
Bagging – a rear bag is easier to empty and
makes the mower easier to maneuver around
obstacles. Both bagging and mulching require
a mower with more power, so if you are
planning to do either, look for a larger OHV
engine.

• Assisted by a drive train that
propels the mower.
• Reduces physical effort.
• Does not use gasoline or oil, which
eliminates harmful exhaust.
Front Wheel Drive (FWD)
• Offers satisfactory traction on flat
terrain with shorter grasses. Allows the
operator to turn the mower without
releasing the transmission.
Rear Wheel Drive (RWD)
• Offers superior traction on all terrains
and thick grass, even as the bag fills
or the operator guides the mower up
an incline.
High Wheel or Low Wheel
• If your lawn is relatively flat and
smooth, a low-wheel mower should be
adequate to meet your needs. If you’ll
be mowing over rough/uneven terrain,
consider a high-wheel mower. The
larger wheels will provide easier
maneuverability and make bumps
easier to manage.
