Nebraska Funeral Directors Association Code of Ethics
The members of the Nebraska Funeral Directors Association do hereby adopt this Code of Ethics
as a standard of conduct for the members of the Association in their professional relationships
with those they serve, with the general public, with each other, and with their profession and
professional colleagues.

A funeral director should deal with those whom he/she serves openly, fairly,
confidentially, respectfully, and competently. A funeral director should:

A funeral director should assist in maintaining public confidence in the integrity and
competence of the funeral service industry. A funeral director should:

Enter into business dealings with those whom he/she serves openly, fairly, at
arm’s length, and with solicitude for their emotional needs and financial
limitations.
Maintain confidentiality of communications with those whom he/she serves.
Maintain an attitude of respect for the inviolability of the dead human body.
Maintain a sincere respect for all creeds, religions and customs.
Strive to offer only those goods and services that reflect high professional
standards.
Support high standards of education for the members of the industry.
Conduct himself/herself at all times with those whom he/she serves and other
members of the public conscientiously and in accordance with enlightened
business standards and practices, with complete honesty in all dealings, and in a
way to reflect favorably upon the funeral service industry.
Protect the public health and safety by scrupulous adherence to professional
standards and maintenance of his/her establishment in a sanitary and orderly
fashion.
Help attract to funeral service qualified people of good character and intellectual
capacity and aid in their instruction.
Faithfully obey all state and federal laws, regulations and rules governing
funeral service both in letter and in spirit.
Refrain from business practices that are unfair, which may have the effect of
misleading the public or which would violate community standards of good
taste.
A funeral director should relate to other members of the profession with the highest
standards of professionalism. A funeral director should:

Expose corrupt, dishonest or unethical practices by members of the profession.
Cooperate in a professional manner with other funeral directors when service of
families involves the merchandise or services of other funeral homes, including,
but not limited to, facilitating transfers of arrangements, both pre-need and atneed, and refraining from unfairly and/or untruthfully disparaging the
merchandise or services of another funeral firm.
Cooperate with licensing authorities, the Consumer & Professional Review
Committee of the Association, the Board of Directors and other authorities,
public and private, that may from time to time investigate allegations of
dishonesty, violations of state and federal laws or unethical conduct.
Encourage adherence to state and federal laws and to this Code of Ethics,
including, but not limited to, making timely and good faith responses to all
inquiries made by the Consumer & Professional Review Committee of the
Association or the Board in any investigation of a breach of the Code of Ethics
on the part of any member of the Association.

General Charge
Each member of the Board of Directors will represent the funeral directors and funeral establishments in his/her district with the overall goal of providing leadership to the association which will serve the best interests of the funeral profession and funeral consumers throughout the state. Each board member will also serve as a member of one of the committees and will be the liaison between the committee and the Board of Directors. Specific Charges
1. Continue to identify ways to foster leadership development and involvement by members in NeFDA’s governance and strategic planning.
2. Encourage retiring District Presidents to nominate members for vacating board leadership positions. 3. Review and approve a policy manual as drafted and presented by NeFDA staff. 4. Identify additional products and services of benefit to the membership and of benefit to the association in increasing non‐dues revenue. 5. Participate in a strategic planning retreat designed to establish immediate operational goals for NeFDA and long‐term direction for the Association.

Charges to the Consumer & Professional Review Committee
General Charge
This committee shall be responsible for informally reviewing all complaints from consumers. This includes consulting with both the funeral
director/establishment involved and investigating and attempting to resolve any differences to the satisfaction of all parties. This committee
shall also receive complaints from funeral directors involving another funeral director and/or funeral home and it shall be the responsibility of
the committee to investigate such complaints and to attempt to resolve differences to the satisfaction of all parties. Where such voluntary
efforts do not resolve differences, the committee shall submit the situation and the result of the informal actions to the Board of Examiners
for their review and possible action. It is recognized that the efforts of this committee are to be directed toward resolving complaints
informally and satisfactorily.
Specific Charges
1. Monitor guidelines and procedures for receiving, reviewing, and resolving complaints from consumers.

This committee is responsible for setting up a comprehensive disaster plan and procedures for use by all funeral directors in case of any type
of disaster, to coordinate the government agencies at all levels in this regard, to educate the members as to proper procedures and to
prepare a simple step-by-step plan for quick utilization by funeral directors and government agencies. All members of this committee are
Qualified Disaster Coordinators.
Specific Charges
1. On going review of a generalized plan for how requests for emergency aid will be received, which state and federal agencies need to be
contacted, and how the deployment of volunteers will be conducted.
2. Compile a current list of volunteers qualified to work in a disaster situation.
3. Monitor and participate in local, state, and national efforts to develop a body of recommendations to effectively manage mass fatalities
resulting from a pandemic influenza event.

General Charge
This committee is to develop programs of interest for the annual convention, seminars and various other NeFDA meetings. This committee
will be responsible for developing professional programs, selecting speakers, and coordinating all elements of the meetings. The committee
shall be responsible for administering the entire mechanics of these meetings along with the coordination provided by NeFDA staff. This
committee will provide the best possible program of continuing education for professional improvement as outlined by the Professional and
Occupational Licensure Division for license renewal.
Specific Charges
1. Plan a continuing education program in Central Nebraska. This should be held in September or in conjunction with fall District Meetings
throughout the State. Among other education offered in this program, include offerings from NeFDA endorsed providers.
2. Review program evaluations, gather input from key individuals involved with the education program, and conduct any other reasonable
"needs assessments" to further improve the program.

This committee is responsible for ensuring that funds from the Laughlin Foundation and Swanson Foundation are administered properly and
assisting graduates of Nebraska high schools to further their higher education in the field of mortuary science. Committee duties include
interviewing applicants, making final selection of scholarship recipients, allocating the amount of various grants and other related details for
carrying out the intent of the scholarship trust funds.

1. Establish a set of criteria to be used in evaluating scholarship applications and for determining the amount awarded to each scholarship
recipient.
