FOREWORD
SOPREMA’s installation manuals are designed to provide
quality-conscious roofing professionals with the most appropriate
installation procedures for SOPREMA systems to ensure the best
possible performance. Using text and images, each manual
describes the ABCs of a specific roofing system, in this case, ALSAN
FLASHING. It provides sound advice and detailed information on
products and tools as well as installation instructions.
Note: In this case, ALSAN FLASHING is not a system, but rather a waterproofing product
that can be used within other waterproofing systems. It is used as a cap sheet or as general
waterproofing when conventional solutions are not appropriate or when the installation of
the membrane cannot be done in a proper way.
Other more general references on SOPREMA products have also
been published by the company and are excellent work tools,
depending on the requirement. They include the Safety Plus Guide,
the Roofing Systems Specifications Manual, and the Roofer’s Guide,
all of which are accepted and used by the roofing industry.
SOPREMA is increasing its efforts to create new information tools,
like this manual, to help roofing professionals find the answers to
their questions and discover the highly superior performance of
appropriately installed SOPREMA products.

and/or the rules laid down by SOPREMA Inc. as of the delivery date.
SECTION 2 DESCRIPTION OF THE
ALSAN FLASHING
The ALSAN FLASHING is a waterproofing one-component
polyurethane / bitumen coating. It is used for the upstands and
roofing details where it is difficult to apply waterproofing
membranes (example: complex upstands with numerous angles,
hard to reach areas due to their narrowness or their environment,
circular flashings, etc.).
ALSAN FLASHING is ready-to-use. It is installed directly over
traditional bituminous waterproofing or approved substrates.
This liquid waterproofing process applies where torches are
prohibited or dangerous (example: inflammable environments, sky
light flashings, etc.).
The ALSAN FLASHING has a 100 g/m2, 150 mm-wide (6 in)
reinforcement, that must be installed at all angles and joints
between two supports.

SECTION 4 TOOLS
Attention
The right tools are important for the successful installation of a
quality waterproofing system. It is thus very important to have all
the appropriate tools on the worksite that are required for installing
the product. Moreover, these tools must be specially adapted to the
materials being used.
The roofing industry is in constant evolution, which means that new
materials, new procedures, and, in certain cases, new tools regularly
show up on the market. It is thus the responsibility of the contractors
to make sure that their workers have the tools required to produce
quality work.
Tools required for the installation of ALSAN FLASHING
• Paint roller and metal tray
• Trowel
• Paint brush
• Rubber gloves
• Independent breathing apparatus
(for applications in enclosed areas)
Tool maintenance
The tools can be cleaned with petroleum solvents such as mineral
gas, varsol or xylene.
SECTION 5 SURFACE PREPARATION
The following installation recommendations are specific to the
ALSAN FLASHING. They detail the application techniques relating
to the various substrates. We recommend consulting the Roofer’s
Guide to become familiar with the handling procedures of
elastomeric bitumen waterproofing products.
Acceptable supports for ALSAN FLASHING
• SBS modified bitumen membrane without loose particles or
plastic film (or one that has had these components removed)
• Structural concrete and concrete panels
• Wood and plywood
• Non coated metals and pre-painted metals
6

SBS modified bitumen membrane
• The membrane must be clean, dry, dust-free and free from any
loose particles.
• On granulated surfaces, the loose granules must be removed or
embedded.
• Thermofusible plastic film must be burnt prior the application of
ALSAN FLASHING.
• Sanded sheet membranes or part of membranes whose bitumen
is protected by a release sheet do not require any particular
preparation.
Structural concrete and concrete panels
• The structural concrete must be at least 28 days old.
• The surface must be dust-free and have no other substances that
can interfere with the adherence.
• Any residue must be removed by cleaning, sanding, or high
pressure washing.
Wood and plywood
• The supports must be clean, dry, dust-free and free from any
loose particles that could interfere with adherence.
Non coated metals and pre-painted metals

SECTION 6 INSTALLATION
FLASHING upstand
A waterproof upstand is achieved by applying two layers of ALSAN
FLASHING (0.75 l/m2) and a reinforcement with a minimum width of
0.15 m (6 in) at all angles and joints between two supports.

CAP SHEET
Note: When the field surface’s waterproofing system is made of two layers, it is possible to
achieve the FLASHING upstand by installing the FLASHING REINFORCEMENT on the base
sheet. To do so, you must verify that the eventual thermofusible films have been burnt.
When a thermofusible cap sheet is applied according to this process, you must avoid
exposing the ALSAN FLASHING to heat welding. Instead, you must burn the thermofusible
film along the last 50 cm (20 in) of the membrane and fold it over the base of the FLASHING
upstand while the bitumen is still hot. When the FLASHING upstand is installed on a
granulated surface such as a mono layer system or an existing membrane, the loose
granules must be removed or granules must be embedded to allow a good adherence of the
ALSAN FLASHING to the bitumen.

STEP 1
Impregnation coat
Using a paint brush, roller or trowel, coat the transition at the bottom
of the upstand with a layer of ALSAN FLASHING 100 mm (4 in)
horizontally and 100 mm (4 in) vertically. Do not spread more that
3 m (10 ft) of adhesive at once.
STEP 2
Reinforcement
Follow immediately with FLASHING REINFORCEMENT that is
installed on the humid impregnation coat using a trowel or paint
brush. Repeat this step so as to cover the entire surface to be treated.
The FLASHING REINFORCEMENT strips must overlap each other by
a minimum of 50 mm (2 in).

STEP 3
1st waterproofing coat
Using a paint brush, roller or trowel, immediately coat the top of the
FLASHING REINFORCEMENT and the overall upstand with a coat of
ALSAN FLASHING.
STEP 4
2nd waterproofing coat
When the first coat of ALSAN FLASHING is dry, finish covering the
upstand with a finish coat along the entire surface covered by the
first coat.
Note: Covering time:
• Covering of the reinforcement by the 1st coat of ALSAN FLASHING:
immediately after applying the reinforcement.
• Covering the 1st coat with the 2nd coat of ALSAN FLASHING:
2 to 3 hours after installing the 1st coat.
These minimal delays are given for indicative purposes and correspond to the polymerisation
of the ALSAN FLASHING at an ambient temperature of 20 ºC. Favourable atmospheric
conditions such as heat, humidity and wind can noticeably reduce this amount of time.

SECTION 7 ADDITIONAL NOTES
Metal flashing
The adherence performance of the ALSAN FLASHING allows to
discontinue using products such as metal flashings, termination
bars, grooves, etc.
Weather conditions
ALSAN FLASHING must be installed:
• On a dry support.
• At a temperature between 5 and 35 °C.
ALSAN FLASHING must not be installed:
• When rain is forecasted within 12 hours of installation.
• When there is a risk of exposure to any type of water within
12 hours of its installation.
Waterproofing systems on the field surface
All SOPREMA modified bitumen membranes can be installed on the
field surface to the base of the upstand. In all cases, at the end of the
day, or in case of bad weather, waterproofing work in the process of
being installed must be protected, especially at the base of the
upstands by using one of the following solutions:
• Seal with ALSAN FLASHING.
• FLASHING REINFORCEMENT glued square with the
ALSAN FLASHING at the base of the upstand.
Slopes
As with all non protected waterproofing systems, ALSAN FLASHING
must be installed on a surface that has a minimal slope of 1%. The
surface must slope evenly and continuously towards the drains.
ALSAN FLASHING is not recommended in areas that are
permanently exposed to water.
Covering existing ALSAN FLASHING coating
The use of a primer, to allow a better adherence, is not required
when a new coat of ALSAN FLASHING is used to cover an existing
one. However, the top membrane must be free from all traces of dust
and humidity.

Upstand protection
ALSAN FLASHING is made to resist ultraviolet rays (UV). However, it
is possible to apply one of the following optional finishing methods.
Optional finishing methods
Ceramic granules:
Ceramic granules can be applied to the wet (not skinned over)
ALSAN FLASHING finish coat.
• Plan on using approximately 1.2 kg/m2.
• This application is done from bottom to top by using,
for example, a plastic trowel.
• The granules can also be applied later by applying a thin ALSAN
FLASHING membrane (250 g/m2) that will be used as an adhesive
for the granules.
CURAL:
To obtain an aluminium colour finish, it is possible to install a
200 to 250 g/m coat of CURAL.
