Cars and trucks run on AMP’s 2-mile, professionally designed race circuit where the average lap speed is about 124 mph. Noise levels from these powerful, high-revving automobiles can range from 50 to 105 decibels. AMP holds racing events about 180 days of the year as well as about 20-30 additional drivers school activities. In addition to automobile racing, Special sound barrier tames noise levels at Atlanta Motorsports Park AMP features three kart tracks, a driving school, rental garages, pit area, clubhouse, tennis courts, pool, and other recreational areas. According to Jeremy Porter, CEO of AMP, the need for a new sound wall arose, as the previous sound wall system, which included natural hay bales, was deteriorating and was never up to their standards. They wanted a sound barrier that was both modern and sustainable, so they examined many options. “Acoustifence had the qualities we were looking for in a modern outdoor acoustical sound barrier fence. We wanted a ‘green’ and ‘sustainable’ sound barrier product because we are an environmentally-conscious organization,” he said. “Acoustifence has the sound transmission loss (STL) performance we needed plus it’s also ‘green’ in the sense that it has 80 percent recyclable materials in it, and is 100 percent recyclable itself.” 30 (3mm x 1.83m x 9.14m) heavy mineral filled, barium free viscoelastic sound deadening material that easily attaches to chain link or wooden fence. Having black anodized brass eyelets every six inches on the top edge and some on the bottom, the material allows easy hanging or attaching to the fence or to just about anything in approximately 30 minutes with two people. Having an effective noise barrier was important to AMP because the motorsports country club prides itself on being environmentally-friendly and a good neighbor to the hundreds of (45/00,3. The solution was found in Acoustifence, shown above. (Acoustiblok photo) Acoustifence is a modern day acoustical soundproofing product manufactured by Tampa-based Acoustiblok Inc. It’s an advanced material sound barrier that is placed between a noise source and the noise receiver. Originally designed and used on offshore drilling rigs, the product consists of a thin, unique 1/8th inch, 6 x residents who live nearby. “Acoustifence’s environmental properties were one of the deciding factors for us. We thought it was outstanding for our needs so we bought and installed enough to surround twothirds of the perimeter,” Porter said. Lahnie Johnson, president and founder of Acoustiblok Inc., said, “Our Acoustifence product is an economical way to reduce outdoor noise that doesn’t require major construction. Two people with a few small hand tools can install the acoustical barrier in about 30 minutes if a fencing system is already in place.” Unlike often tried natural sound barriers such as fences, shrubs or hay bales, the Acoustifence material not only blocks direct sound, but also reduces very low frequency sound from reflecting off it. “We’re happy with Acoustifence. It was easy to install and it’s working. It’s also green and sustainable. The customer service was great and so was the shipment time,” Porter said. “Since we’ve had the Acoustifence, the neighbors tell us that they love the new fence. They said they think the Acoustifence works better than our previous sound barrier and they think it is more attractive to look at as well,” he added. Made in the U.S., Acoustifence is an easy to use sound deadening acoustical fence. It has a unique continued on page 48 48 • JUNE 2014 • WORLD FENCE NEWS Special sound barrier tames noise levels at Atlanta Motorsports Park characteristic that sets it apart from other non-structural sound barriers when dealing with very low frequencies such as vehicular or even train noise. In frequencies of 50 Hz and below, the heavy limp Acoustifence material actually begins to vibrate from low frequency sound waves, Johnson explained. In essence it is transforming these low frequency sound waves into mechanical movement and internal friction energy. Laboratory tests indicate that this transformation process reduces these low frequencies from penetrating the Acoustifence by over 60 percent relative to the human ear. In these low frequencies test results show an NRC (noise reduction coefficient) as high as 0.78 (1.00 being the max). The word “green” refers to environmentally-preferable attributes of a product, service, and/or technology. Herb had done it all, and was happy to share his expereiences in a regular column for many years. Here is just one sample of his down-to-earth practical advice, and is one of the first articles he submitted to WFN, back in July 1983. Sadly, Herb passed away several years ago. It is a known fact that the best of materials poorly installed can create an eyesore. A fine ship in a harbor, with the best anchor but a weak anchor chain, is soon adrift. Similarly, fence posts set in weak or inadequate concrete footings soon leads to a leaning fence. Footing widths and depths vary in specifications due to differences in opinion of architects or whomever is designing the fence. ASTM standard F567 defines a good practice to be followed. This standard, generated from Committee F14 on Fences, calls for concrete footings to be four times the diameter or widest cross section of the post. A great product at a good price from a name you can trust! be a minimum of 24 deep with 3 added to the depth for each additional foot in height. Holes drilled in rock are to be three times the post diameter or widest cross section in depth with ½ clearance between post and side walls of the drilled hole. The better footing is one where the holes are power auger drilled. The best footings, especially in cold weather areas, are those that are (a) precast; (b) concrete poured into wooden forms, backfilled and tamped; and (c) stovepipe sleeves backfilled and tamped. This will allow frost to rise without gaining a hold on the smooth sides of the footing. A post hole dug with a hand digger is best when the post hole is bell bottomed or “balled” at the base. The bell shape allows the frost to lift away from the footing, and the ball, if below the frost line, will present a greater mass for the frost to lift. Posts should be concreted in place as soon as possible after being dug. Holes left open overnight will generally fill in. If you set your posts in “caved in” holes after redigging, you do your customer and yourself a disservice. This can give access to attack by frost. An off-centered preponderance of weight will cause the footing to settle in that direction. Too big holes, too small holes, offcenter holes, large redug holes and driven posts with concrete caps added to the top generally are bad practices. Hand mixing accounts for the small holes (less work), transit mix for the large holes (plenty of concrete) and slothfulness for the capped posts. We didn’t always have transit mix, and when it did become available, we couldn’t always afford it. The time saved by using a transit affords time for checking hole alignment and driving in spot posts. This time spent saves bucks as the mix truck is in and out of the site without charging for overtime. If the installer lacks experience, he should stick to hand mixing, then go on to the cement mixer before attempting transit mix.
