trekking destination on the African
continent.
Trace the beginnings of civilisation
in Ethiopia, widely believed to be the
birthplace of humanity. Our Ethiopia’s
Historic North tour covers many of
Ethiopia’s prime archaeological sites,
but this can be modified to include
other noteworthy places in Tigray and
Afar, as well as the Palaeolithic site of
Melka Kunture in the Awash Basin and
the ancient embellished stelae in Tiya.
Simien Mountains: With spectacular
views of deep gorges and harbouring
many endemic species of flora and
fauna, the Simiens is a trekker’s
paradise. Trek amongst packs of
grass-munching Gelada Baboons and
look out for the endangered Walia Ibex
and diverse birdlife. Challenge yourself
with a trek up Ras Dashen, Ethiopia’s
highest mountain at 4543m.
Bale Mountains: The largest alpine
habitat in Africa, the Bale Mountains is
home to much of Ethiopia’s indigenous
vegetation with Giant Lobelia growing
up to 8m. Trek to Sanetti Plateau
where solitary Ethiopian wolves (the
rarest canid on the planet) forage
for food. Elsewhere, sightings of the
elegant mountain nyala are almost
guaranteed. Camping options are
available or day treks can be arranged
from the luxury Bale Mountain Lodge.
Birding
One of the world’s birding hotspots,
Ethiopia’s mountains, lakes and cities
are home to a bewildering diversity
of birdlife. Over 280 species have
been recorded in the Bale Mountains
alone, including 7 species endemic
to Ethiopia. With dramatic and varied
landscapes, from the Entoto Mountains
on the outskirts of Addis Ababa to the
Great Rift Valley Lakes and the Simien
Mountains, a birding itinerary can be
put together to suit your interests.

responsive in setting up a private tour schedule for us
that proved to be perfect and reasonable in cost. We
have just got back from our travels and can say that
it was certainly a good choice. The itinerary was varied
and interesting and the accommodation well chosen.
The quality and price of the food and wine in the
region were an added bonus. Our driver/guides were
friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. They went
