ACROSS THE BOARD
OUT WITH THE OLD AND
IN WITH THE NEW?!
T
he Old (aka Tammi): I want to thank everyone for helping me this year while I was
president, especially Donna Seeley, Kelly
Collins, Mark Dadgar, Aleksey Kadukin, Ian Dunn,
Mike Mills, Jeff Cowan, Kelly Kirkland, Bob Goebel,
Canyon Chan, Matt Visser, and Kris Linquist.
Unlike the 2010 board elections, someone ran for the
position of president for 2011! Without delay, let me introduce you to the new GGC president, Donna Seeley!
The New (aka Donna): I would like to thank Tammi
for badgering me into running for VP last year—and most
recently, into running for president this year.
The Old: Yes, I unabashedly admit that I did it so I’d
have someone to carpool with to board meetings. Those
long drives from San Rafael to San Mateo on a weeknight
during rush hour can get mighty lonely! But enough about
me and my narcissism; what do you plan to do in 2011,
Donna?
The New: I plan to increase member retention (just like
I said in my candidate statement—did anyone read that
besides the 36 people who voted?). Shall we talk about member demographics? The Club, as a whole, is overwhelmingly
populated by 41-50 year-olds!
The Old: No way! We’re not in that demographic—wink,
wink, nudge, nudge.
The New: I want to find out what GGC’s demographics
are—and what YOU want. So get ready to get surveyed!
Once we know who you are and what you want, we may
make some changes in our activities.
The Old: More hot-tub parties? Actually, I think our
members want more wine events, but we’ll only do those
using buses for transportation, not driving ourselves. So
that’s it—what do they want? How about more singles
events? I seem to sense a need for that among our more
active members. (I won’t define “active.”)
The New: I’m dating my car.
The Old: Guido? He’s cute! But I’ve always been partial
to those boy-racer E30 M3s.
The New: Or the Mini. But currently, I’m thinking of
breaking up with him. His warranty was up two months
ago, and he broke this week. Maybe I need a Kia Soul—I
love their commercials.
The Old: I don’t think you can be president of a BMW
chapter and drive a Soul. It’s just wrong! But you’d still
have Guido….
Worth noting is the fact that you’ve got a bunch of new
volunteer leaders for 2011. I loved the ones I had, but they
all quit on me. I’m trying to not take it personally. But it’s
hard not to when you lose Mark Dadgar, Bob Goebel, Matt
Visser, and Kris Linquist all in one fell swoop! I even lost
4

By Tammi Hull, ‘10 President/Treasurer
By Donna Seeley, ‘11 President
Mike Zampiceni for part of the year as social chair, but
fortunately he came back in late October. Thanks, Mike!
And when I begged Mike Mills to take over the webmaster duties after Mark Dadgar retired, Mike quickly coerced
Kris Linquist into the job. Mike will proudly tell you that
he was webmaster for about three days. I still don’t know
what he promised Kris, but I’m sure Donna will pay later.
The New: I will happily pay! And try not to do whatever
you did to the old team….
Now I’d like to introduce your new team leaders. They’ve
all been promoted from within, and have been participating
in the programs for ages. It’s great to have continuity with
people ready to step up!
Our new driving-events coordinator is… the Old!
Tammi decided she hasn’t had enough abuse in the few
months since Dadgar’s retirement, so she’ll continue
through 2011.
Taking over Bob Goebel’s job of organizing car-control
clinics (CCC) and Street Survival schools will be Canyon
Chan, Paula Williamson, and Mark Magee.
In the autocross program, we now have Rodger Ball and
Jeff Roberts as coordinators. (Have I mentioned how much
I admire people who can look at a sea of cones and find the
best route in three runs?)
The Old: I haven’t been abused at all! Or is that abused
enough?
The New: I know a challenge when I hear one! I’ll start
by writing the rest of your responses while you’re on the
phone.
The Old: The New, what can I do to make your tenure
a raging success? Just name it!
The New: Having board meetings closer to my home in
Sonoma would be a good start. Maybe have all the driving
schools at Infineon, all CCCs at Candlestick? Require all
first-time track students to drive an E30 325e? Rename us
the Golden Gate—We Also Love Minis—Chapter?
Oh, you meant success for the members? I dunno, let’s
ask them!

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
VOLUNTEER DAY
February 5, 2011, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
16800 Cory Drive, Morgan Hill
Joe Fant, [email protected]
GGC supports Habitat For Humanity and will be hosting a volunteer work day on a building site in Morgan Hill.
Come join us!
Over the past few years, our Golden Gate Chapter has
sponsored two Habitat For Humanity volunteer work days
at the Brokaw Road Habitat construction site in North San
Jose. This time we’ll be at the Morgan Hill Habitat site,
located at 16800 Cory Drive in Morgan Hill, which is close
to 101 and E. Dunne. Six new homes are currently under
construction at this site; they are expected to be completed
sometime in the summer of 2011.
This type of project requires many volunteers; whether
you are an old hand at construction or are just interested
in learning something new, all are welcome to come help.
Think you don’t have the skills needed? No worries, our
Club members will be teamed with skilled Habitat leaders.
These work days are a great way to have a lot of fun—and
contribute to a very worthwhile cause at the same time.
Construction volunteers must be at least fourteen years
old. This is also a great way for your high-school-age students to get in some community-service volunteer hours!
The day will begin on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m.
with a brief mandatory safety meeting. The work day will
end at 4:00 p.m. Volunteers should bring comfortable clothes
with long sleeves, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. A sack
lunch is advisable for the lunch break at noon, but there are
also nearby fast-food restaurants available.
If you are interested in participating, please RSVP to
Joe Fant.

join the fun as we celebrate the events of 2010 and usher

downtown San Mateo. We have also kept the pricing the
same as last year at $48 per person!
Our February board meeting will be held prior to the
Winter Party. The meeting will begin at 4:00 p.m., the Winter Party starts at 5:00, and we have the place until 11:00.

CAR-CONTROL CLINIC
February 26, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Candlestick Park, San Francisco
CCC Team, [email protected]
Join us at Candlestick Park for our car-control clinic.
You will learn the basics of performance-car control by
participating in slalom, skid pad, and emergency-avoidance
exercises with instruction. The car-control clinic is a daylong event that consists of three low-speed exercises: a skid
pad, a slalom course, and a braking and accident-avoidance
simulation. These exercises will better prepare you for situations on the track, as well as in everyday driving.
NOTE: This car-control clinic is a pre-requisite for all
first-timers (with no previous on-track driving experience)
who are planning to attend our Laguna Seca driving school
on March 14.
Event cost is $110 for BMW CCA members and $158
for non-members (price includes a one-year BMW CCA
membership). Lunch is included. If you plan to attend,
please read our event overview!
Registration is open!

tremendous elevation changes and the thrill of the famous
Corkscrew. Come enjoy a beautiful day on the Monterey

attend one of our chapter’s car-control clinics (CCC) before
attending this driving school. Our February 26 car-control
clinic is the pre-requisite.

AUTOCROSS
April 9, 8:00 a.m.
Marina Municipal Airport, Marina
Rodger Ball & Jeff Roberts, [email protected]
www.bmwautocross.com
Autocross events are low- to medium-speed auto-racing
events that are often run in parking lots and on airport
runways. Generally. a course will be defined using traffic
cones. One driver at a time negotiates a course laid out with
the cones, or pylons, testing their skill against the clock.
Time penalties are charged for disturbing cones, with a
penalty of one second per cone. Generally, each driver takes
six to seven runs at an event, and is awarded the best time
of all runs taken.
Autocross is an inexpensive, safe way to experience racing.
It develops your driving ability, and helps you discover your
car’s capabilities and limitations—making you a better, safer
driver on the road. Many would-be race drivers use it as a
jumping-off point into the sport of road racing, but the greatest
thrill of autocross is the challenge of beating your own time.
It’s fun! Want to read more? Check out our Autocross Primer
(Microsoft Word format) at www.ggcbmwcca under Driving
Events Overview, or visit www.bmwautocross.com.
Non-BMWs are allowed to participate, but all participants must be BMW CCA members. If you are not currently
a member, you can add a BMW CCA membership during
the registration process and pay during checkout.
We no longer accept on-site registration. Event cost is $45
(a sack lunch is optional for an extra $5). Our lunch break is
only 30 minutes long. You must return on time! The driver
meeting begins at 9:00 a.m.; if you miss the driver meeting
you will not be allowed to participate in the event.

GGC FACEBOOK PAGE
At the January 20 Golden Gate board meeting,
we will vote on a new GGC logo.
The BMW Group has laid down the law with new Clublogo layout requirements for all BMW clubs worldwide. The
required layout of the new logo template doesn’t work with
the shape of our current logo graphic, and we cannot use
our chapter badge design anymore. We had to come up
with a graphic that would fit the rectangular shape for
the logo. Our chapter graphics guru, Percy Chow, came up
with four great new designs to choose from—they are here
to the right. Each layout meets the new logo requirements
from BMW AG.
We’ll discuss the logo choices at the January board
meeting. Please attend the meeting if you would like to
participate in the decision!

East Bay Italian Tour
Bravo to the tour organizers!
T
he East Bay Italian tour organized by Mike
Zampiceni and Mary Sandkohl was a more
spirited drive than we expected—my spirited-driving
interest began on the back roads of the Monterey Peninsula and over the emerging Laguna Seca course when a
1600-cc engine and very early syncro trannies were the
norm. But it was still hard to believe I managed to get
our 2.25-ton ‘91 BMW 850i coupe to the first regroup
point only a minute or so behind the Z and the three
M3s ahead of us. (My apologies to the three M3s behind
us through that Sierra-Felter-Calaveras Road stretch!)
Those 24.7 miles were the most I had ever driven the
850i in its Sport 2 and Sport 3 tranny ranges.
It was great to then follow the others and stay with
them along the less-twisting and hilly motoring surfaces
of Niles Canyon, Palomares Road, and Crow Canyon Road
to Blackhawk and balance of the tour.
The visit to Garre Winery was a
very fitting culmination to the motoring adventure. I enjoyed the vino
degustazione—including a splendid
Cabernet Franc available for tasting—
and the well-thought-out menu for
pranzo to quench the mid-day hunger.
We found it very fitting to finish the
day with a bit of bocce ball.
This GGC gathering was a great way to interact with
our fellow members. In our view, the road-course sequence
that was mapped out was a fitting choice for those with our
motoring enthusiasm.
I feel very fortunate to have been brought to my senses
by those first 24.7 miles of the driving tour as a likely
culmination of 50-plus years of driving most any back
road at near my limit (and as fast as most anyone). I’ll be
more inquisitive about the roads to be negotiated as age
73 passes by.
Grazie mille,
John and LeAda Orrell

San Luis Obispo Area Tours

AVILA CONCOURS: RIDERS IN THE RAIN
I
t took the Rain Man three years and twenty San
Luis Obispo-area chapter events, but the old man
finally nailed us on October 24, our outing to the
Avila Beach Concours.
Sunday morning brought light, steady rain and very wet
conditions, dashing our plans for a short drive and a tailgate
lunch at the event. Since our route consisted mainly of back
roads in less-than-prime condition, it was unanimously
agreed that we abandon the drive and come up with an
alternate plan.
We headed north from up the Cuesta Grade to Tina’s Place
in Santa Margarita for brunch. Our group of twelve filled the
place to overflowing. They were short on staff, but everybody
pitched in and things worked out fine. In fact, a friend of the
manager even filled in as server for the day! Since we were in
rain-delay mode, it didn’t bother us, and we got acquainted
with the Arnerichs, first-timers from Santa Maria with a
beautiful red E46 330Ci.
When we finished our meal, it was still gray and drizzly, so
most of the group made other plans for the day. A few of us—the
O’Connors from Mojave, the Parks from Lompoc, and I—pressed
on to see what was happening at the concours at Avila. It’s held
We were rewarded to find that nearly all of the
cars were on display despite the weather; only a few
extremely rare examples were covered with plastic
to keep dry. Richard Cole of Orcutt exhibited his
beautiful red Ferrari Daytona. A regular with our group,
Richard puts a lot of work into this concours, which raises
money for Hospice of San Luis Obispo. Among the other
interesting sights was the Munro Special, the subject of The
World’s Fastest Indian, the movie about Aussie Burt Munro
and his exploits at the Bonneville Salt Flats with his ancient
two-wheeler.
When the rain became a bit too persistent, we called it a
day and left as the awards presentation was getting into gear.
Those of us who are local really look forward to this
event, and we hope the sun shines on it next year. There has
been little BMW presence to date, save for a lone CS coupe,
so anyone out there with a classic (or modern classic) entry
is encouraged to enter next year. Our very prejudiced view
is that there are few better places to spend a weekend than
the Central Coast!
NO-FAULT PARKFIELD TOUR
Was it really all San Andreas’ fault?
“W
e’ll be back!”
were our final
words to proprietor Sandra Reisz at the V6 Grill
in Parkfield after a delicious dessert.
Parkfield sits only a few hundred yards
from the San Andreas Fault, with a
USGS monitoring station nearby, and
was the ultimate destination of our tour—a three-stop
event exploring new trails east of San Miguel.
The southern contingent of our group met in Arroyo
Grande at the Donut Derelicts car show—always a pleasant
way to start the day. We caravanned to San Miguel and met
our fellow travelers for the day—fifteen in all, including
Jerry Zack and a friend joining us from Monterey. Jim and
Marianne Culver brought their very nice ’85 635CSi, in good
form on the speedier sections of the drive.

Our first stop was the Country Diner, run for many
years by our friend Linda Mora. It was just big enough to
accommodate our group around the counter, making for a
very cozy atmosphere. Linda shared some local color; one
story concerned the snakeskin hanging on the wall. It was
courtesy of a wayward rattler found lurking in a load of scrap
lumber; the future art piece unfortunately refused a humane
attempt at relocation.
We then headed a few blocks south to Mission San Miguel,
the sixteenth of the California missions, built in 1797. It suffered sever damage in the 2003 San Simeon earthquake, but
was re-opened in late 2009 after extensive repairs. After a
brief tour, we were ready for some serious driving—and I was
really looking forward to riding shotgun in Sam Burg‘s E60
M5. Being a lifelong square peg, I enjoy the unique sound of
the BMW V10, having owned two five-cylinder Audis. That
adds up to ten cylinders, doesn’t it?
We headed east on Cross Canyon to River Road, then
south to Estrella Road, which right-angles its way through
farmland and vineyards. We turned north on Hog Canyon
Road, gradually narrowing as it twisted its way to its end at
Ranchita Canyon Road. The last few miles are pretty rough,
so we took it slowly, easing our way to a photo stop. Ranchita
was still narrow at barely two lanes, but was smoother, and
gradually widens as it winds back toward San Miguel.
We left Ranchita as we returned to Cross Canyon near
San Miguel, and then turned north on Indian Valley Road.
At this point we were passed by a black-and-white; I’m not
sure what he was doing out in the boonies, but fortunately we
were well-behaved
at the time. Then
we turned east onto
Vineyard Canyon
Road for the final
sprint to Parkfield.
weren’t working on this Saturday, but they had left their calling card in the form of dirt spread over the road for several
miles—now mud after the overnight rain.
Once on dry pavement, we had clear sailing for about ten
miles until we encountered a slow-moving horse transporter
who refused to pull over. I took the opportunity to pop out
of the M5’s sunroof to take a few shots of the group behind
us, with Hamp and Sue Miller’s gorgeous red 135i leading
the pack. Eventually we were able to pass the offending truck
in small groups a few miles before the our final destination
at the V6 Grill.
As we pulled into the parking lot of the restaurant, we
spent a few minutes recounting our adventures and admiring(?) the mud acquired along the way. This western-motif
restaurant is very pleasant, with a fireplace and lots of varnished wood. Our stop today was for dessert, since we had
eaten not that long ago; the pies and coffee were excellent,
and we look forward to a full meal on our next trip!
As we said our goodbyes, most of us opted to head west
on Cholame Valley Road to Highway 46. It would be a good
place for a high-speed run—not sayin’ we did anything like
that, it just crossed our minds. Sam aimed the M5 down
Highways 41 and 33 through Creston, making the most
of the big sedan’s amazing agility. It was a great year-end
finale. Thanks again to all who rode with us this year; we
look forward to meeting more of you in 2011!

Top Driver Shootout
The only bright spot from the morning session was that the weather had been fairly consistent within each run group. So we decided the
fairest thing to do was to treat each group as a
mini-TDS; the top two drivers from each group
at the end of the day would battle each other on
a modified course. Each of the six drivers would
get three runs; the top adjusted time from this
final shootout would crown the top driver.
We modified the course so it ran like the
morning course at the start, but added a loop
back so it ran like the afternoon course. The idea
was that each single run would basically be a run
through the morning and afternoon courses; that
seemed to be the fairest thing to do. Luckily, the
weather was dry in the afternoon, with sunshine
and calms winds for this final-six shootout.

T
he 2010 autocross season finished up as it always
does, with the Top Driver Shootout in early
November. But this year, one element made it
different from past shootouts: the weather.
decided to add rain—adding a new variable to the equation. A
little bit of extra sun or cloud has very little effect on times, but
rain causes a huge difference. Are you lucky enough to run in
the dry, or unlucky enough to run in the wet?
The Top Driver Shootout (TDS) differs from a regular
autocross in a few ways. First, it is an invitation-only event.
Second, we allow only BMW and Mini cars to participate. Third,
there is no division of driving classes—as is used during the
season—instead, all the drivers compete against each other on
the same level. Fourth, we have a yummy catered BBQ for lunch.
The TDS was broken into three run groups. The first ran in
dry weather, but by the time the second group’s runs started,
the rain had begun to come down—hard. I was frequently
checking the radar map on my smart phone, and the only rain
cell in all of California was in a band from Watsonville to Carmel; it seemed as if the rain was falling just on our autocross!
The goal of the TDS is to take all possible variables out the
equation, leaving the driver as the only changeable value. It’s a
simple format: Each car is assigned points based on the model and
the mods done to the car. Everyone runs the course four times
in the morning, then we reverse the course and run four more
times in the afternoon. For each driver, we add the best time in
the morning to their best time in the afternoon to arrive at a total
raw time. Then we adjust the time using a formula that takes into
account the number of points assigned to the car. The driver with
the best adjusted time is crowned the top driver for the year.
The third group started in the rain, but the moisture tapered
off just as we finished up the group. That was good news for our
outdoor BBQ lunch; it’s far nicer to eat outside in dry weather.
The bad news was that the results showed that the fastest cars
were all from the first run group—not exactly the level playing
field we were hoping for.
At least that’s the way it usually works.
The weather at Marina is usually a predictable mix of sun,
clouds, fog, and wind. This year, however, the Autocross Gods
The final six drivers were really no big surprise;
most were winners of their classes in the regular
season, or had run very well
in the events they did attend.
We had a mix of different cars from different classes. Alex Sakhartchouk was
driving his wife’s C-class Mini Cooper.
Christian Duvivier had his B-class winning Z3 2.8 coupe. Rodger Ball
was in his AAA-class E46 M3.

off of their cars, making the results extremely close, but there can
only be one top driver—and this year it was Brian Cheung. Brian
had come close in previous years, but
this year he would not be denied, and
proudly hoisted the Fechner Cup at
the end of the day.
The weather made it interesting,
but, as always, it was the participants
who provide the true entertainment and make it an event. I
would like to extend a special
thank-you to everyone who
stayed to help work during the
final six-car shootout. We would
not have been able to have those
final eighteen runs without
those of you who volunteered
to shag cones, work the timers,
and send out the cars. For that,
we are grateful!
The driver with the best
adjusted time out of three runs
would be the 2010 Top Driver
Shootout winner. The drivers
went out and drove the wheels
It should be noted that Kris Linquist and I have been running the autocross program for five years, and there was was
only one time it rained—the October autocross a month earlier.
A five-year dry trend had given way to a two-month wet trend.
The afternoon forecast was for dry weather, but the (rain)
damage had already been done: There was no way we could
treat all of the times the same way and still have a fair contest.

The few, the proud, the people who will
do anything for a free autocross!
By Rodger Ball
I
t was another great season for the autocross contingent;
the events were all packed, and the competition intense.
Unfortunately, the 2010 season is over, and the cone-avoidance
crowd is stuck with only the occasional highway cone zone to
remind them of a perfect pass through the slalom, or fighting
for grip around a big sweeper. Others may dream of the massive roast-beef-sandwich lunches as they pass a Subway and
glimpse the pale comparisons. We’re talking about
sandwiches which, if not
shown proper respect, could
easily add five seconds to
your autocross time! These
memories of great times and
even greater people will be
forever etched in our memories for years to come.
All these fond recollections and excellent events
wouldn’t have been possible
if it were not for the few, the
proud, the people who will do
anything for a free autocross.
Yes, we are talking about Matt
Visser, Kris Linquist, Kelly
Collins, Jason Sams, Michael
DoCouto, and the other autocross crew members. This
crew, led by Matt and Kris,
have put together an excellent program over the years.
Unfortunately, the years have
added up, and Matt and Kris
have decided to step down.

Now, before you panic in
fear that our beloved cone
crew will spin out of control
for lack of leadership, rest
easy: A new pair of free-autocross junkies have stepped up to fill
their shoes. Jeff Roberts and I have accepted the new positions.
For the 2011 season, you can depend on us to contribute to your
cone-crushing carousing. But unlike the recent political arena,
we are not running on a campaign of reform and change; we
want—and promise to continue—to bring you the best autocross
you’ll find anywhere on the West Coast.
So it’s with a big “THANK YOU” that we say goodbye to Matt
and Kris for all the conus addictus fixes you’ve given us over the
last few years. We hope to continue providing our members the
same fun and challenging competition. Let 2011 begin!
Retiring Chapter Event Coordinators
Mark DaDgar: Driving-events coorDinator,
track-school project co-Manager, webMaster
I
t was with great sadness that I had
to accept Mark’s resignation from
the chapter board and as driving-events
coordinator this year. When Mike Mills
and I were asked in 2003 to help revitalize the chapter board, Mark was the first
person we both wanted to ask to join us.
We were so glad when he accepted; he
jumped right in and always had an “I can
do that” attitude which was addictive!
Now it’s seven years later, and it wasn’t
until Mark was gone that I fully realized
how much he had been doing for the
chapter. In addition to his driving-events duties, he was
also hosting the website, hosting our forums, managing
our email accounts—and I’m sure I’ve yet to discover all
that he was doing.
Mark worked hard for the chapter and devoted a lot
of time to us, too. That’s hard to do when you have small
children; Mark had two while he was on the chapter board!
Mark was my favorite person to kibitz with about
national politics, regional politics, Club Racing politics,
etc. Thanks, Mark, for all that you’ve done. You’re welcome
back any time!—Tammi Hull
I
n early 2004, Mark Dadgar stepped
up to be our driving-events coordinator—and though he didn’t know it at
the time, his life would change forever!
It’s probably better that he didn’t know
then what he was getting himself into
with the Golden Gate Chapter.
Over the years, he became more and
more involved in the chapter, taking on
several key leadership roles that helped
us establish and implement an online
event-registration system; he also advocated stringent safety standards for our
driving schools, and maintained one of the most robust
and well-respected driving programs on the West Coast.
His marketing and business acumen helped to grow our
chapter’s driving programs, while keeping us on a tight
break-even budget.
Mark was a great asset to the chapter; we were
extremely lucky to have someone so capable and sharp.
His wit, wisdom, and humor are greatly missed, and
his retirement leaves a large pair of shoes—Sparco, no
doubt!—to fill.—Kelly Collins

he chapter board—indeed, the
entire chapter!—owes another pile
o’ thanks to Bob Goebel for his many years
of volunteer service as car-control clinic
coordinator—a position from which he was
dragooned into being our Street Survival
coordinator as well!
Bob has been our CCC coordinator for
so long that I wasn’t sure when he started,
so I asked a couple of other folks, including
Gary Shannon, and every one of them said
they were sure he had been doing it for
about ten years!
I guess Bob has just been such an
integral part of the CCC team that it seemed like he’d
been in charge for all those years—but Bob himself told
me that he’d only been in charge since
2004. However, he had been instructing
and helping out for much longer than
that—and of course he’s been one of our
highly respected track-school instructors
as well. His dedication to give teens a
better base with their driving skills has
even evolved into a part-time position as
a driver’s-ed instructor.
Luckily for us, Bob is as organized as
he is dedicated and has already trained
someone to take over the CCC coordinator job: Canyon Chan. Bob has been
giving Canyon hands-on training all
year—and he will be available to assist
Canyon even in his retirement. Thank you for taking our
driving clinics to the next level, Bob!—Tammi Hull

office: Christine Cheshire, George Combes, Jenny Jump,
Al Thomas
7:08 p.m.: Meeting called to order by Hull
Presentation from Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance team:
(involving slides and projector!)
▪ Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance team joined us to share
a vision about the 2011 event.
▪ The concours is a money-raising event for local charities;
they started in 1967 and raised almost $2,000,000 since
then. 100% of money goes to charities (everything is done
by volunteers and nothing is ever spent for non-charity: no
trips to Bahamas, no boats, not even exotic supercars).
▪ European and American marques for 2011: BMW
and Ford. The event is June 25-26, 2011, on the Stanford
University campus. The event includes a special driving
tour and dinner the day before the main show.
▪ GGC members are cordially invited to event-organization meetings.
▪ Judging rules follows SCCA rules—some judges will
be selected from GGC members.
▪ Driving-activities plan in progress (the preliminary idea
sounds thrilling);
▪ The 2010 layout was presented as example, car-corral
area; it will be smaller in 2011 due to retrofitting project
at Stanford.
Driving-events report (Hull):
▪ Ball: 2011 autocross schedule is posted online. We lost
one day in Marina, which puts test-and-tune event in
danger. The alternative is organizing the test-and-tune
for Friday prior to the Saturday autocross.
▪ Board thanks Matt Visser and Kris Linquist for many
years of dedication to our autocross program. Collins is
writing a special article for Bombe to thank all volunteers
who stepped down recently. Funny stories are welcome as
an article addition and will be collected by Kelly Kirkland.
MINUTES
▪ CCC: Bob Goebel has resigned from CCC coordinator
position. Canyon Chan takes his place for 2011. New
CCC team scheduled three school days for 2011 already.
▪ HPDS: Thunderhill school went well. Laguna Seca
school scheduled for March 14, 2011. Thunderhill school
days have been requested. HPDS team decides not to
schedule any 2011 schools at Infineon for now.
▪ Hull volunteers to take on the driving-events-coordinator position for 2011!
▪ We need to clean and refinish the trailer (and truck);
trailer clean-up will be scheduled for January.
▪ Ball raises a question about insurance requirements
for our volunteer truck drivers. Hull explains that people
who drive the truck more than once should be listed on
the insurance policy.
▪ Kadukin: Borelli Motorsports has offered help with
truck and trailer service.
Tour-activity report (Cowan):
▪ Rhone Ranger driving tour was challenged by weather
conditions and some unfortunate driving incidents. The
winery tour went very well (“Fantastic,” as Cowan said).
We had a lot of first-time participants. More tours are in
the works.
▪ Visser suggests reaching out to tour participants with
follow-up emails that include autocross and CCC event info.
▪ Special presentation from Percy Chow: (This involves
slides and projector, too. The technical advancement of the
meeting is going through the roof today!)
▪ New chapter logo: Poll is posted on GGC forum at
JustRacing.com and Bimmerforums.com. The polls were
announced on the chapter eblast and on the GGC website.
New event: Percy proposed organizing an event that
could attract a wider audience than current big events.
For example, Bimmerfest has much bigger attendance rate
than any GGC event; he is thinking about making an event
that could combine some elements from the smaller events:
track school with CCC and tech session on site, for example.
▪ Advertisement strategy: Bombe and online. Web-based
offers and coupons for chapter events. The service should
be free for advertisers. Coupons should be printable and
traceable. Groupon model presented as example; we
should have something that we could supervise.
▪ Hull asks about pricing policy for ads on truck and trailer:
we want to refinish the trailer and wrap it with vinyl graphics, and would like to offer advertisement opportunity.
Communications report (Collins):
▪ Website is challenged: We need to figure out what to
do with it soon. Tech behind website is in discussion for
a few hot minutes.
▪ No updates on social media: We have it.
▪ 2011 board-candidates voting is in process: the voter
turnout rate is low.
◊ Zampiceni points to some issues with voting page.

▪ New-chapter-logo voting is in progress.
▪ Hull nominates Mark Dadgar, Bob Goebel, Kris Linquist, and Matt Visser for chapter-appreciation award.
Board agrees without any hesitation.
Social-events report (Zampiceni):
▪ East Bay wine-tasting tour in September was a success.
▪ Zampiceni is collecting prize donations for Winter Party.
▪ 2011 plans: a tour which includes a visit to a railroad
museum is in planning stage for May. Zampiceni would
like to invite members from Sacramento Valley chapter
to join us at the event.
▪ Winter Party is on track and registration is open.
▪ 2011 Sonoma Historics: no updates because organizers
have nothing yet, but they are suggesting placing $100
deposit to reserve a space. Cowan says, “They are easier
than Laguna to deal with.” Cowan proposes making the
event free for chapter members. Collins hates that idea
right away and beats Cowan. (No pictures or video, sorry.)
▪ Bimmerfest 2011 is scheduled for May 14 at the Rose Bowl
in Pasadena (again). Board discusses what we could do at the
event. Dunn volunteers to distribute chapter newsletters.
Area-reps report (Hull and Collins):
▪ We are looking for a Monterey-area rep.
▪ Dunn would like to transfer his SF-area rep responsibility to another volunteer.
▪ Ken Glidewell (Peninsula-area rep) has a social event
at Auto Vino, a car-and-wine storage facility in Menlo
Park, on December 11.
▪ Kris Linquist (South Bay area rep) has an upcoming
Meet & Greet event at Kaama Lounge in San Jose on
20
Die Flüsternde Bombe
January/February 2011
December 14, but can’t make it himself due to a business
trip. Cowan volunteers to help.
Tech-session report (Kadukin):
▪ New tech session is set at Borelli Motorsports in San
Jose on January 15, 2011.
▪ Cowan: Kadukin must follow up with Big O Tires representatives to keep the valuable contact alive. Kadukin
will do it (seriously this time).
▪ Kadukin plans to contact BR Racing in Los Gatos with
tech-session proposal.
▪ Kadukin plans to revive Chevron tech-session idea and
write an official letter to their representative.
Membership-chair report (Dunn):
▪ Dunn worries about steady decline in membership
and would like to concentrate on retention via renewals.
▪ Dunn presents the idea of sending postcard to members
before renewal date. Somebody mentions phone-calls
idea: Collins disapproves. Visser agrees, “We should not
annoy people at home!”
▪ Chow proposes use of some web service to centralize
e-blasts and event-info distribution.
▪ Cowan wants somebody to start working with BMW
dealers so they could help recruit new members and
retain current ones. Perhaps we could invite salespeople
to a track school?
Vice-president report (Seeley via phone):
▪ Seeley shares the survey report presented during recent
pacific-region conference call: a lot of interesting statistics.
▪ 2011 Cars of GGC calendar: still in the works. Seeley
hopes having it ready by December 20. (You can buy it
here: http://tiny.cc/2011_CarsOfGGC)
▪ Board-meeting schedule is under discussion: could we
do weekends or alternating dates? Somebody proposes
6:00 a.m. breakfast idea, but everybody is too tired to start
a fight. Collins says, “Let’s try alternating days.”
Treasurer’s report (Hull):
▪ We have money!
▪ We inadvertently didn’t charge Club racers for the most
recent event. The mistake will be fixed today!
▪ Ball and Visser start a conversation about the upcoming
requirement for Snell 2010 helmets for our loaner-helmet
stock, but everybody else begs to postpone it because
most everyone is ready to go home.
▪ The request is ignored and discussion continues. Collins points to the fact that HPDS charges rent for helmet
use, but autocross does not. Visser points out the helmetrental-price-charge challenge; he proposes to split the fee
across all driving-event participants. Ball mentions the
autocross entry-fee increase for 2011 due to site-rental
fee increase and other increased expenses (all prices
have gone up), making an additional increase a difficult
proposition. The board tables the discussion for now.
Meeting adjourned at 9:47 p.m.

NEWS FROM NATIONAL
Frank C. Patek II, Executive Director
December 2010
Wow, where did the year go?! And
what’s all this white stuff on the ground?
As we scurry through a busy holiday season—let’s be careful out there!—we wish
you and yours a Merry Christmas and
a Happy New Year! Please note that the
National
Office will be closed December
th
24 and January 31st.
New chapter logo standards are due:
A huge thank you to each and every one of you for your
cooperation as we work toward meeting the deadline set
by BMW to change our logos to meet their new standards!
As we have been discussing for far too long, the official
logo guidelines governing use of the BMW roundel—and
promulgated by BMW AG—are changing. By January of
2011, every chapter needs to modify its official chapter logo
to be in compliance with the new standards.
Please be advised that every chapter MUST submit
their logo for approval.

BMW CCA to introduce new website and database in
2011: update: As Christmas is upon us, we’re burning the
midnight oil in the national office! We are working hard
to make sure that both the new database and website are
ready to go on February 1; the site has been rolled out to
our first group of testers, and we will expand that group
right after the first of the year.
The new website and database are being built in tandem,
so they actually work with each other—and not against each
other. This should eliminate many of the problems we have
experienced with membership renewals. Many of you are
acutely aware that currently, renewing members cannot
change their membership type unless they call the national
office. That problem will soon come to an end!

Each chapter will its own “landing page” on the Club
website. These new pages will meet the minimum standards for a chapter’s web presence, and can be linked to
each chapter’s existing home page. Look for more robust
event pages as well; chapters will no longer be limited to
just a few sentences on the calendar. Starting February 1,
you can have a full page devoted to each event!
Stay tuned for more improvements—but we still
need your help! To help us get the new website and your
chapter landing pages started, we need your assistance.
Please send us a 500-character—not 500 word!—descriptive statement of your chapter. This statement will be
included on your chapter’s landing page. Please send it to
[email protected] as soon as possible!
Oktoberfest 2011: Birmingham and Barber Motorsports Park!: Mark your calendars: O’Fest 2011 kicks off
Monday, October 10. Our final banquet is slated for Friday,
October 14. In addition, we will have bonus track days on
Saturday and Sunday, October 15–16.
For a sneak peak of the Oktoberfest 2011 schedule—and
for ongoing details—please visit our dedicated Oktoberfest
website, www.bmwccaofest.org and stay up to date on
O’Fest news.
Oktoberfest junkies on a 24-hour O’Fest news cycle will

Harris Connect to produce picture book for BMW
CCA members: After more than a few bumps and bruises
along the way, this project has begun; so far, more than
1,500 copies of the Members Album have been sold!
To clear away any lingering confusion, this is NOT a
membership directory. Contact information will NOT be
printed in this publication.
What are we publishing? The first-ever BMW Car Club
of America 2011 Membership Album—the first publication ever to feature member-submitted photos and stories.
This beautiful hardcover publication will include membersubmitted photos and narratives detailing the story of us!
This handsome publication will be a welcome addition
to your personal library—a great way to show pride in being
a member of the BMW Car Club of America, and a valuable
resource as well—not to mention making a great Christmas
present for that BMW CCA gearhead in your life!
Harris Connect, a leading publisher of alumni and
membership publications for more than 45 years, has been
selected to compile this first-ever edition. The publication
will feature an introduction and history of the BMW Car
Club of America, with full-color pictures, as well as member-submitted photos and stories. In addition to personal
information, members will also be able to list their chapter
affiliations and year and model of their cars.
BMW Car Club of America members have been contacted by phone and mail, starting in November, to verify
and update their contact information. Be on the lookout
for information on how you can participate in this publication, and visit the BMW Car Club of America website at
www.bmwcca.org for periodic updates!
TOY BOX
S
ome weeks ago I received two full sets of
sample Cool Carbon S/T street brake pads for
review from Cool Carbon Performance. For
my Toy Box review, I’m taking a long-term, two-prong
approach. One set will be tested in an aggressive style,
and the other will be tested in a daily-commute mode.
Right out of the box, I could see that these are pretty nice;
the pads themselves are quite substantial—the material
appears thick, and cut for maximum surface contact. I also
noticed that the backing plates are polished—a nice detail.
Also included in the box is a sheet explaining installation
and break-in, and some decals.
For an aggressive street and autocross review, I enlisted
the help of Sarah and Anthony Zwain from Edge Motorworks in Dublin. They are a well-known husband-and-wife
team who not only share their passion for each other,
but also their cars. Anthony is Edge’s shop foreman and
alignment guru… as well as a very fast driver! He’s built a
formidable E30 that is affectionately called Frankenstein,
and his racing accomplishments include the 2009 NASA
Norcal TTB co-champion, track records at Thunderhill and
Infineon, and multiple Spec E30 podium finishes.

Cool Carbon BMW S/T Street Pads
Retail price: ~$230 for a set of front and back pads
(Price is for BMW E36 M3 application, price may vary
according to car model.)
Product website: www.coolcarbonperformance.com
The daily commute review I’ll do with my everyday
driver—an 1995 M3. I make no claim of race fame, so my
review will take the perspective of the enthusiast. I mean,
heck, I may not have any points on the Club Racing leaderboard, but I can still appreciate stopping power!
Initial Thoughts: Aggressive Testers
The Zwains have installed the pads on their 1995 M3
and have some feedback already comparing them to the
OEM Jurid pads from BMW.
1. Installation: Like all other pads: remove wheel,
remove the retaining clips, and retract the piston.
2. Pedal feel: With a proper bleed, the pads feel like
OEM—unlike other pads which sometimes may feel vague
due to their contact patch or material.
3. Stopping power: The pads’ cold-stopping power is
very good and similar to OEM—no surprises. They don’t
require heat to make them grip, unlike other aggressive
street or race pads, which demand some heat before offering
stopping power. (This characteristic can prove unnerving
when you roll out of the driveway into traffic.)
Overall impression after the first few hundred miles:
“We like the pads. The first thing we noticed is that the
pads don’t rattle or squeal. Also, their low-dust nature is
a welcome feature to help keep our race wheels all shiny,”
said Sarah. “We look forward to trying them out when the
Spring autocross season begins. At this point, we’d say they
make a great alternative to the stock BMW pads.”
As for the commuter test, I’m really looking forward to
testing these pads, since I’ve heard nothing but good things
about them. Stay tuned for the April issue and my crazy
commute stories with these pads.
Technical Information (From Cool Carbon website):
Street Performance/Track Tuned (S/T): This compound is a higher friction level than OE, with much
better torque and stopping capability. It is very stable,
both cold and hot to temperatures exceeding 600°C
(1,112°F), due to a special “hollow” ceramic structure
that exhibits excellent heat-dissipation characteristics.
Stainless-steel noise shims, bonded to what is already a
very quiet formula, ensure virtually no noise under all
driving conditions. Improved pedal feel and significantly
reduced dust can be expected.
S/T compound features: Excellent initial bite, consistent torque, stopping ability, and temperature stability;
very good fade resistance; long life, rotor friendly, low/
no dust; virtually without noise; excellent for daily street
use and provide very good track performance.

Essential for teen drivers!
February 26, at Candlestick Park

Imagine knowing what to do when your car begins to slide, or
being in control during that “panic stop.” Come out to our next Golden
Gate Chapter Car Control Clinic and learn these skills. No matter what
you call these events, from Chassis Dynamics Exercises to Safety
Schools, the fact is that you can't have more fun than pushing your car
past the limits of traction in a safe environment (how else are you
supposed to know what it's capable of—and what you're capable of?).
Let's face it: Everybody knows how to drive, and we all think we're
pretty good at it. Here's your chance to have fun while you find out
just how well you've acquired those skills—and learn many new basic
car-control skills in a single day.
Maybe you're interested in learning more about your car's
handling or want to break some bad habits. Maybe you just want to be
a better driver every time you get in your car. The good news? A GGC
Car Control Clinic is the perfect answer in either case. Consider the
incredible value of this compared to similar schools with big-name
companies costing nearly a thousand dollars. Make it a gift to yourself,
a friend, or family member—teens love these clinics!
