All but
over
S
That’s a wrap on yet
another season.
ummer 2012’s boating season is all but over. I
say ‘all but’ because there will always be the
die-hards. You know the ones! They pull their
boat of the water on what is the very last possible day, some even push it past the last day
waiting until the snow load on the decks and gunwales
needs to be chipped off. Gotta get that one more day in
of course – and honestly, who can blame them?
In this issue Cam McRae takes the shroud off of Honda’s largest outboard
– the BF250 – in his Technology column, only to find out the power plant
comes from a minivan of all places. In his Ask The Expert column, Stephen
Horsfall suggests we don’t miss the gap when looking for a solution to low
power. And our resident fishing expert, and all around zany guy, Dave
Mercer shares some more great fall fishing tips for a full leader.
Our in-depth boat tests this month feature Sun Reef Yachts Power Cat 60
– a dream boat indeed; Cobalt Boats’ beautiful all new 26SD sport deck; and
Ebbtide’s 2700SS cuddy bowrider which Editor Brad reports is one crossover
that truly works.
In our annual Sneak Peeks for 2013 feature story, we share with you our
readers all the exciting and breaking news that’s available to us at press time
about what the boat manufacturers have in store for next season. From new
interiors and new hull colours on some models, to completely brand new
models with fresh power options, what’s rolling out now is honestly quite
exciting! What we know is coming is even more exciting, but we can’t tell
you about that quite yet.
Garth Cane takes us inside the 2013 GMC Denali in our Tow Test report,
and then we close out this issue with our Life Afloat column reflecting on
sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.
So once again I invite you to turn the jumbo format pages, enjoy the large
photos and insightful content just knowing that everyone here at Power
Boating Canada is already well underway to working on our next two issues:
our annual Test Issue and the Boat Show issue to help get you through the
long cold winter to come.

One Last Bite
Fall’s feeding frenzy.
O
kay – think back to when you
were a kid, for some of you that
might be a tougher task than for
others. At one time or
another in our childhood, we were all at a party and
experienced this next emotion I’m
about to explain. Whether you want
to classify this emotion as panic,
greed, or just a natural emotion of
competition, we’ve all experienced
it… the need to get the last one. It
doesn’t matter whether it’s a bowl
of chips, popcorn, candy, or pizza.
When it first comes out, everyone
gets along nicely. But then it all
changes when that bowl of popcorn gets down to the last few kernels, there is always two or three
kids feverishly grasping at the final
few pieces like it was the last meal
on Earth.
But that feeling doesn’t just
happen for us. That very same
instinctual behavior happens
below the water and it is happening right now. Don’t get me wrong.
I’m not saying that fish have parties, popcorn or pizza. But every fall
they feel that exact same instinct to
eat before it’s gone.
In Fishville, the last few months
basically have been a party to
them. Throughout the summer
months, living is easy and food
is readily available. But once the
colder weather arrives, the Fishville
Feeding Fiesta ends and living gets
a whole lot tougher.
Don’t get caught thinking its
doom and gloom. This is actually a good
thing because the fall is simply one of the
best times of the year to fish. No matter
what you are fishing for, every fish knows
that things are about to change. As soon as
8
Power Boating Canada | Volume 27 Number 5
the day’s starts to get shorter, they know,
“I need to eat and I need to eat NOW.” That
instinct, paired with the fact that just about
every body of water gets less traffic (or fishing pressure) simply makes the fall my favorite time of the year to fish.
Just because the fish are willing to eat
and there’s less pressure on the lake doesn’t
mean that you can just bomb your bait in
the middle of the lake and expect to get bit
by Bass-quatch. Where you choose to fish is
probably more important this time
of the year than any other time of
the year. One of the reasons fall
fishing is so good is because the
fish get grouped up. Which basically means that there are some
areas that have a ton of fish, but
that also means that there are a ton
of areas that have no fish. If you’ve
read this column in the past, you
have heard me say countless times
to fish in the weeds. That is where
the fish live and that is where you
want your lure to be.
In the autumn months, it is no
different. You do want to fish in
the weeds. But this time of year,
not all weeds are created equally.
The two major reasons that fish
like weeds is #1 it allows them an
ambush point, and #2 weeds produce oxygen in the water. Both
of these are paramount in a fish’s
survival. However, once the days
get shorter, some of these fresh,
green, oxygen-producing weed
beds begin to turn brown and
die. Dead and dying weeds no
longer produce oxygen and ultimately no longer become home
to fish. But once again, that negative becomes a positive to us
anglers. In the summer months,
the only way to find out if a fish
lives in a particular weed bed is
to fish it and this can take a whole
lot of time. Now, Mother Nature
does us the favour of basically showing
us where the fish are. Autumn anglers can
easily idle their boat around looking for
fresh green weeds. Find the green weeds
and you will find the fish. h

Honda BF250
Automotive advancements benefit boating.
F
or almost seven decades the Honda
Motor Company has built its success
on innovation. Motorcycles, cars and
small “power product” engines have
all benefited from Honda-created
advances. The world of boats gained the
four-stroke outboard through Honda’s initial efforts and continued perseverance.
Remember the comments? Too heavy, too
slow, too much maintenance. Seems laughable now - thanks to Honda.
That said, Honda is, by and large, a conservative organization. They dance to their
own tune, and won’t be pushed or lured into
following the latest trend. So it was with the
advent of the megamotor outboard. While
the other OEMs were eagerly creating 300
hp monsters, Honda’s offerings maxed at
225, with little indication that that might
change. For a while, you could see the logic.
The big engines seemed geared to a narrow
market, populated by the flashy, high speed,
gold chains and blonds-on-board set. That
quickly changed as the 250-300 hp engines
found homes on a wide variety of vessels
designed specifically for their use, often as
alternative to I/O power.
In response, Honda has released the
BF250, a 3.6 litre (3583cc) version of the
3471cc BF225 60 degree 24 valveV6. That
might seem like a simple exercise - punch
out the displacement, modify the induction slightly and bingo! 25 more horses.
Honda, however, has subjected the flagship BF250 to a complete engineering
review, adding features and modifications
that will serve the engine in its heavy-duty
role. And, I would suggest, that will support the engine if Honda decides to add
even more horsepower.
The two stand-out features are a novel
cowl and a brawny new gearcase. Designed
to cope with all that power and transmit it
to the water, the gearcase is an example of
today’s computer-assisted detail engineer-
10
Power Boating Canada | Volume 27 Number 5
ing. The low-ratio (2.00:1) gears, 10 percent
larger than the 225’s and with thicker gear
tips, are forged from a new hyper-pure alloy
and finished with an improved grinding process. Instead of the typical tapered roller,
the forward gear now turns on needle bearings which maintain gear alignment under
high thrust. The new case, large enough
and strong enough to contain all that thrust,
actually produces less drag than the 225’s,
also the result of computer analysis. To eliminate the human factor, Honda has created
Shift Load Reduction - the ECU changes the
ignition timing to reduce torque, right at
the moment of shifting. Small changes, but
enough to handle 250hp - and more.
Historically, outboard cowlings were
a styling exercise and a way to keep the
rain out.
In recent times, the engineers have also
employed the cover as an intake sound
attenuator and to direct air to the induction
system. Honda takes that concept a leap
further by splitting the inlet routing of air
into two “circuits”. The first ducts air from the
front and routes it to chill electronic components. A top-mounted fan pulls this air past
the alternator. A second circuit collects air
from high-mounted vents, subjects it to a
water-separation process and then conducts
this cooler, drier air to the throttle body.
Induction noise is quieted within the intake
passages where a sound-interference chamber cancels out the racket.
Whenever I analyze a Honda outboard
engine, I’m reminded of the story behind the
Honda story. Whereas many of the technical
features of the competitors’ powerheads are
inspired by, or borrowed from, car engines,
Honda starts with a car engine. In the case
of the BF225/250 it’s from the Odyssey minivan. Early Honda outboards paid a small
price in weight and ease of service as a result
of this practice, a liability long-since remedied. (A 25 inch BF250 weighs 284 kg/624lb)
But all Hondas exhibit the smooth flow of
power and wide output band characteristic
of the best automotive engines. A car tester
would call it “excellent driveability”.
VTEC, Honda’s variable cam lift and timing device lies at the heart of both minivan
and outboard performance. The outboard
also incorporates “BLAST”, a hole-shot system which advances the ignition and richens
the mixture when the throttle is mashed.
The rest of the time, the engine is constantly
tuned by “Lean Burn Control”, keeping the
mixture and ignition timing optimized for
both power and efficiency. (Honda claims
best-in-class fuel economy.)
Returning to the BF250’s marine-specific
features, the outboard carries a 90 amp alternator with “Amp+” which varies idle performance based on electrical load. In neutral,
the idle speed is increased 100 rpm to handle a large electrical draw. The system disengages when a gear is selected. To ease the
task of re-powering, Honda has retained the
“old standard” 26 inch mounting centres.
And, to ease the task of rigging, the BF250 is
NMEA2000 compliant. The National Marine
Electronics Association software is a “standardized inter-connect protocol employed
to create a plug-and-play cooperative network of NMEA compliant electronic devices
on a boat”. (phew!) In other words, your fishfinder can easily converse with your engine,
your GPS and your autopilot.
There’s a story behind that story. For
another time... h

Low Power ?
Q
Consider adjusting the throttle stop.
I have an interesting problem
with a late 70‘s, approximately
24 year old, 9.9 horsepower outboard. I have owned the motor
since it was new. It has been
well maintained and still looks great, all
original. The motor always starts second or
third pull.
My issue with the motor is that it will
not develop full power under humid or
damp conditions and the boat has a hard
time getting on plane. This is not fun on
a dark night coming down the lake. Clear,
low humid days she runs strong. I took it
in for service and they rebuilt the carburetor. No other apparent problems, but it
did not help improve the situation. Next
step, I changed the spark plug wires, no
improvement. I completed a compression
test and both cylinders read around 90 psi.
I was told to run the engine in the dark to
see if it is shorting out, but did not notice
anything unusual.
Just wondering if you have run in to this
problem before and would be thankful for
any help you can provide.
J. Smith,
via email
A
There are not very many reasons
for an engine to lose power just
because of a change in the temperature or the humidity level to
the extent you are experiencing. Here are
few thoughts and observations that may
help you with your diagnosis.
The compression figures are on the low
side of ideal, not bad considering the age
of the engine, but low enough that they
could be a factor.
The main metering jet in the carburetor
(high speed jet) might need to be changed
to compensate for altitude if the water
you are running in is at a higher altitude
than say 500 plus feet above sea level. If
you take a look at your old spark plugs,
12
Power Boating Canada | Volume 27 Number 5
they should have a nice light brown color
inside. If they are black, the engine is running too rich, and if they are white to light
gray, the jetting is too lean. If there are
small flecks of aluminum on them, there is
too much timing advance.
If the problem only occurs after prolonged slow speed, such as trolling, the
idle jet may be adjusted too rich, causing excess carbon build up, that may take
some time to burn off at high speed.
Another more obvious observation, if
the problem only occurs at night when
returning across the lake, have you
checked for weeds fowling the propeller? You might not see them in the dark,
but you can usually clear them be shifting
back and forward with the gear shift a few
times. Then try getting up on plane again.
When the problem occurs, you could
shut down the engine and remove the
cover and make sure the throttle is actually going to the full throttle position. With
the engine off, you can move the control
to WOT and look in the air opening of the
carburetor and see that the lower butterfly
valve is open all the way. If not, maximum
throttle stop may need to be adjusted.
Lastly, if the problem ends up boiling
down to the general age of the engine
and it’s compression issues, you could buy
some time before an overhaul to the purchase of a new engine by having the propeller pitch reduced by an inch or two to
allow for a bit more out of the hole performance. Just make sure that the engine is
checked with a tachometer to insure that it
does not over rev at the top end. Got a question or
a problem?

Kids and Boating
How to involve them in planning, cruise and cleanup.
B
oating with the kids as a family
can be a most enjoyable activity. Because people, especially
kids, have unique personalities
it is important to take the suggestions that I am going to make and
adapt them to meet your needs. Every
trip, whether it is a day trip or even an
overnight trip, will consist of three primary areas of activity and it is important
to involve the kids in all three. Let’s start
with the most important.
• Planning and Preparation
Kids can be very involved in planning. They can suggest places that
they would like to go and things they
would like to do when they get there.
Before leaving, they can help make
sure that you have all the safety gear
on board and that it is in good repair.
Give children responsibilities and
use the trip as a learning experience to
improve their boating skills.
• Kids can go through the Transport
Canada Boating Safety Guide, free
at most marine outlets, and check
off the list of safety equipment
required for your family boat. When
you get to the boat they should
know where everything is located
and how to use it.
• Lifejackets and Personal Flotation
Devices (PFDs) are the most important safety equipment items. They
only work if people are wearing them
so I strongly suggest that they are
worn at all times. They must be in
good condition, they must be the
proper size to fit each person and
they must be approved for use in
Canada. At the beginning of each
season everyone should check their
PFD and try it in the water. First put
14
Power Boating Canada | Volume 27 Number 5
• • • • them on and then enter the water
to chest depth and slowly raise your
legs. If they don’t fit snugly and ride
up, readjust or get a better size. If
they are ripped or worn, get a new
one. PFDs are very difficult to put on
once you are in the water. If you want
to see for yourself, try it in a controlled safe situation. You will soon
see why they are best worn all the
times in open boats while underway.
If kids are going to operate any powered boat, even under adult supervision, they must be able to prove
operator competency. Usually this
means having a Pleasure Craft
Operator Card. Taking a course.
Getting your PCO Cards is another
great family activity in the off season.
Have the kids check the first aid kit
for the sun screen, hats, sun glasses
and foul weather gear. Don’t forget
required medications. Have them
pack the cooler with healthy snacks
and lots to drink to bring along to
stay hydrated on sunny days.
Teach them to check weather reports
in advance, and during the trip
show them how to watch the sky for
changes in weather. Make sure there
is enough gas to get there and back.
The general rule is 1/3rd out, 1/3rd
back and 1/3rd in reserve.
Invite the kids to bring along a few
personal items including some simple games that they can play or a
book to read.
File a trip plan. It is recommended
that you file a Trip Plan before every
trip no matter how long or short it is.
A trip Plan, sometimes called a Float
Plan or Sail Plan, is a brief description of your trip, the proposed route,
destinations and timing. It should
include a description of the vessel
and identify all the people on board,
contact information and the date and
time of the expected return. Give a
copy of the Trip Plan to a responsible person and instruct them to contact the police and/or your regional
Rescue Coordination Centre if you fail
to return at the expected time.
The Cruise
During the trip, involve the kids in
reading the charts and looking for aids
to navigation, marker buoys and things
on shore that will help identify where you
are. Look for church steeples, water towers and familiar natural points of interest.
Teach them how to read a compass, or
the rules of the road. Get them to help
you anchor or tie up the lines at the ice
cream stop. Kids have very keen eyes that
can not only spot things of interest but
possible dangers as well.
The Cleanup
When the trip is over, “circle” the
vessel and clean up. Note any necessary repairs and replacement that are
required and set up a schedule to carry
them out so that you are ready for the
next trip and have not left any needed activity to the last minute. Check
for any wear and tear, check for leaks,
replace or service any safety items that
you have used and try to leave the vessel in the same condition it was before
you left. Spend some time with the
kids helping you do these repair jobs
together.
Following these suggestions ensures
that everyone on board – kids included
- has a great time and is already looking
forward to your next trip together. h

SIMPLE HANDHELD COMPASS
Sometimes the simplest tools work best. The Hand
Bearing Compass from Davis Instruments is a reliable
device for basic readings on water and land. Even young
children can quickly learn to use the compass.
Readings are easily obtained by aligning the compass’
front and rear sights on an object. The stable, liquiddamped compass card is graduated in 5° segments, with
bold markings every 15°. A large, contoured, lightweight
handle and lanyard simplify use. The illuminated model’s LED floods the compass capsule and sight vane with soft light.
Davis Instruments’ Hand Bearing Compass is particularly helpful on small boats for
sighting objects, navigation, plotting distance offshore, predicting a potential collision
course and checking drift while at anchor. It’s also great for hiking, camping, and other
outdoor activities.
The Hand Bearing Compass from Davis retails for $45.99, and the illuminated model
costs $55.99. Both are for Northern Hemisphere use.

TRUMPET HORN UPGRADES
Boat horns are an important and required safety item,
but they don’t have to sacrifice beauty for function.
Schmitt & Ongaro Marine Products has enhanced
its stylish line of single and dual trumpet horns with
moisture-blocking resins and lubricants. Unique in
its use of these techniques, the company is helping
boat owners battle both salt and fresh-water corrosion, to ensure a horn works properly when needed.
The sounding unit is sealed with an engineered resin
to block moisture intrusion. Electrical contacts within
each horn’s rear sounding unit are also protected with a
conductive lubricant, which prevents oxidation. These
advances eliminate a tedious maintenance chore and
lengthen service life. Owners no longer need to disassemble and clean a horn’s electrical contacts, even after
it’s subjected to rain, condensation or salt spray.
The Deluxe Stainless Steel Single Trumpet horn is 16.5”
long with a 120 db rating, while the Shorty model measures 13.5” long with a 114 db rating. For a richer, deeper
sound, the Deluxe Stainless Steel Dual Trumpet has a
125 db rating and is 18.5” long, with the Shorty model is
rated at 120 db and measures just 16” long. Prices begin
at $107.95, all horns meet applicable ABYC standards and
come with a 5-year, no-rust guarantee.
Every horn comes pre-wired for simple installation
and fits existing hole patterns for upgrade projects.
The company also offers a full line of compact, dropin horns for boats up to 39’ that feature the protective
conductive lubricant.

Cobalt 26 SD
Deck boat function coupled to
sport boat fun.
By Cam & Diana McRae
C
The stern bench seat lifts to provide good
access to the engine compartment.
www.powerboating.com
obalt has done it again. Hard
on the heels of the radical-chic
A-Series sport boats, the Kansas
based luxury specialists have
brought us their first deck boat!
And, like the A-25 and 28, the 26 SD is controversial - a boat to set tongues wagging
and heads scratching.
A deck boat. Some would suggest a
decade too late, but the reality of sales
figures demonstrates a recent increase in
popularity for this practical, enjoyable, hull
format. Cobalt’s slogan for their Sport Deck
is “Fun Follows Function” and the design
is unique. Whereas many deck boats look
like a clumsy attempt to bond a pontoon
platform to a runabout, Cobalt has carefully expanded the hull and its interior to
accommodate the palatial space and luxe
amenities we would expect from Cobalt’s
version. The expansion was accomplished
by employing what has been variously
described as a “modified tri-hull” or “splitchine” design.
A departure for Cobalt, when attempted
by other manufacturers this hull shape usually results in a pickle fork nose or a clumsy
scow-bow. Cobalt has managed to avoid
both of these aesthetic pitfalls, but the hull
has its own drawbacks. The sides rise vertically from the waterline to a dramatically
high freeboard, giving the boat an almost
barge-like quality when at rest - a phenomenon enhanced by the acres of uninterrupted
black gel coat on our test boat. At the dock,
this boat had a menacing aspect, underscored by the illusion of machine gun ports
in the bow, actually the LED docking lights,
and Cobalt’s own, telescoping boarding ladder. Our 26SD tester would look right at
home in a James Bond movie!
Powerful dock presence notwithstanding, it’s an odd-looking boat. But check out
the cover on this magazine and you’ll see
that some of this impression dissipates when
the craft is in motion - and when the hull
colour is more attractive. We’d still prefer
the lights tucked under the bow and there’s
no reason why the magic ladder couldn’t be
hidden beneath the anchor hatch.
The cover photo also gives you a good
view of the hull’s undersides, like we said,
a major departure for Cobalt. But not, as it
turns out, a liability. We’re used to Cobalt
vee-hulls that rise effortlessly on plane, travel faster than their size, weight and power
would predict, ride like an island and handle
with sportscar aplomb. The 26SD has lost
none of that. In fact, it has gained somewhat
in agility. The boat pivots around those
massive chines like a slalom skier at full cut.
Boats that grab the water in a turn often
exhibit some misbehaviour, sometimes
scary, when really pressed. Nope, the 26SD
behaves...like a Cobalt.
Some of that traction derives from the
Volvo DuoProp hanging off the stern. The
counter-rotating propellers have their own

water-grabbing qualities that, we suspect, contribute to the SD’s good manners. Motivated by a 375 hp Volvo big
block, the twinned props also launch
the 5500 pound SD on plane in no-fuss
Cobalt style and will set the big deck boat
skimming at over 50 mph. This was also
the quietest Volvo big block installation
we’ve ever experienced. With no odd
induction noises or low frequency harmonics, this 8.1 GI was unobtrusive in the
extreme. In the helm area, normal conversation was possible at all but the fastest
speeds. Running with the engine cover
partly open we discovered that, not only
was this big block naturally quiet, but the
Cobalt engine compartment offered a
high level of insulation.
Performance, however, is only part
of the deck boat equation. On board the
SD, it’s all about space. Not just creative
seating arrangements, but with the wide
(91”/2.3m) cockpit and expanded bow, the
26SD has that welcoming sense of open,
airy, and nobody’s crowded - no kneeknocking. Aft, the port side is dominated
by a long banquette that includes the helm
area and blends into the huge sun pad
on top of the motor box. The side bench
and the stern lounge feature Cobalt’s “flip

backrest system” that allows the seat back
to serve in both directions. Walk-thru to
the swim deck and you’ll find the marvelous fold-out platform extension introduced two years ago.
The starboard’s “entertainment center”
has been kept slim and tidy, plenty big
enough to serve its purpose, but it doesn’t
impact on the living area. And the head
gets a gold star. Capacious, with a big
door, good ventilation and lighting, this
little room has been skillfully tucked under
the port windshield deck, intruding minimally on the boat’s interior. Full marks.
Up front, bow seating is wide open with
a dedicated lounger on the port side and a
very comfortable easy chair to starboard.
That comfort is enhanced by Cobalt’s new
flip-down armrests. In use, they’re wonderful. But they’re clumsy, not integrated with
the seats. The bulky chrome mounts are
blingy, but they look like something made
in shop class.
Overall, Cobalt has chosen to give the
upholstery an edgy, angular style with
squared off corners and blocky seat backs.
It’s another departure from the more curvaceous and classic Cobalt style we’re
used to. For now, the jury is out because,
on our tester, the effect was spoiled by
the choice of colour. Although Cobalt
offers three palettes for the 26SD, brown
dominated our test boat. For us, brown is
not a boat colour. And there was brown
everywhere on this boat. Some of it, the
cushion inserts, is not a very nice brown.
Plus, the cream background is just creamy
enough to fight with the gleaming white
gel coat. We’re not alone in this opinion.
Those we asked, came up with comments
The head gets a gold star: spacious and not too
intrusive into the interior space.

with the now-familiar high prow bowrider profile and signature dark blue hull
colour. It’s an appealing, unquestionably
nautical look that has become a contemporary classic. We easily forget that Cobalt
has a history of creative, often daring,
attempts to originate new boat styles.
The rakish, sharply-drawn Condurre, for
example, from the Eighties. There’s a 1975
Cobalt tri-hull (!) for sale on iBoats, that
has, you guessed it, brown upholstery. In
those dark days of the aforementioned
Seventies, we were also treated to purple cushions. The A-Series and the SD
add to that legacy of bold innovation.
Interestingly, the A-28, introduced after
the A-25, proved to be a more integrated
and more appealing version of its shorter
sibling. Cobalt 26SD literature refers to
an SD “Series” and a company spokesman
confirmed that a 24SD is in the works.
We’ll just have to wait for that one. h
like “Earthtones! Yuck!” or “Reminds me
of the 70’s” (A lamentable decade at
best.)
There’s no debating the quality and
craftsmanship. Cobalt’s choice of materials, the stitching, fit and finish truly do
set the industry standard. Perhaps they’re
trying too hard to be different when we’d
be happier if they’d just be satisfied being
the best. You can see the styling struggles
in the details. For example, the helm’s padded dash, brown though it is, is a marvel of
elegant simplicity. But, the steering wheel
is a garish hey-look-at-me refugee from a
wakeboard boat.

Ebbtide 2700
SS Cuddy
Bow Rider
A unique crossover that really works.
By Brad Roberts
T
he admittedly unique layout of
Ebbtide’s 2700 SS Cuddy Bow rider
grabs your attention as you walk
down the dock. Consisting of a
bowrider front, a cuddy cabin midsection, and runabout cockpit with sunpad over the engine and an extended swim
platform that covers the outdrive, it’s a sort
of crossover design. I’ll admit that my first
thought was a curious one. Is this akin to
the toaster oven that at first blush looked
like a good idea on paper, but didn’t work
in practice?
I stepped aboard to investigate. The
extended swim platform is larger than you
often find on a mid-twenty foot cruiser, and
it completely covers the outdrive. There’s
a four-step telescopic swim ladder to port,
and a freshwater washdown shower. The
centre section of the sunlounger flips up
to reveal the keel-line walkover transom.
While a very safe design, it is somewhat
unnecessary on a boat of this size, and it
eliminates one of my favourites: the adjustable headrest/seatback that one finds on
a port or starboard walk-thru/over design.
The 2700 would be better served with a
starboard side entry.
Once inside the cockpit, I immediately
22
Power Boating Canada | Volume 27 Number 5
noticed how deep the hull was. Sitting to
begin to make my notes, the u-shaped sofa
featured high and very comfortable seatbacks that wrapped all the way around from
the starboard side entertainment centre to
the portside just aft of the high-back companion bucket seat. Sitting in each spot, I
counted room for 6 or 7 adults. An Isotherm
drawer-style refrigerator pulls out from
under the port seating, leaving room under
the sink for an impressive sized storage area.
I lifted the single-wide sunpad to reveal the
Volvo 8.1 Gi engine our test boat was fitted with. There’s plenty of service access
room around the engine and a large storage
space to port to stow your gear.
Prospective purchasers have their choice
of engine options ranging from a 5.7 Volvo,
to the Volvo 8.1 Gi, or up to the optional
Mercury 496 MAG HO with Bravo One drive.
Any one of which will produce grin-inducing need-for-speed performance given the
2700’s Dyna-PlaneTM deep-vee 24 degree
deadrise hull. That’s a number more typically found on offshore boats, but in the 2700
it produces both a smooth stable ride for all
day cruising, as well as an exciting wake, at
lower speeds, for tow sports of all kinds.
As I took the helm seat – a very com-

fortable hi-back swivel bucket with flip-up
bolster – I began to wonder about who
the potential buyer of the 2700 might
be. The helm features Ebbtide branded
black on white gauges with chrome bezels
well recessed into a burlwood dash with a
large eyebrow. A three-spoke wheel with
leather trim is centred on the seat and my
vision wasn’t restricted by the windshield
frame. A low profile windshield is available as an option that would give an even
more sporty appearance. A walk through
windshield provides access to the forward
bow seating area without going through
the cuddy cabin. The steps leading up to it
are molded into the full fiberglass hull liner
just left of the helm.
Access to the cuddy cabin is via a sliding
door, where I found twin facing sofas that
drop to form a beam-wide double berth.
Adjusting the cushions to make the bed
was easy and I could stretch out with room
to spare at my feet. Some cuddy’s claim
a so-called double berth. Perhaps at one
end, but at the end up near the bow it’s
nary a single. Not so with the Ebbtide – it’s
a full double berth width at your shoulders and at your feet. With the seats up, a
porta-pottie with pumpout pulls out from
under the floor of the cockpit. That’s great
for day use, but it would be a real pain
to wake your partner up in the middle of
the night to entirely disassemble the bed
24
Power Boating Canada | Volume 27 Number 5
when nature called.
The optional overnight package includes
a 15” flatscreen TV, a microwave, 12 volt air
conditioning, a 110 Volt AC Outlet in Cabin,
and Shore Power w/Battery Charger & 25`
Cord. For a true weekend getaway it would
be easy to add an extra house battery and
an inverter. The cabin features great headroom, two opening ports and two overhead
opening hatches, and with both bow and
stern sliding door open it has an airy feel.
With them closed, it’s tight. I’d definitely
opt for the full canvas option for both the
space and mosquito-free enjoyment – day
and night.
Through another sliding door you reach
the bow area, which is great for kids. It’s
deep and well padded with stainless grab
bars on the deck, two stereo speakers and
cup holders. On every boat there’s a compromise somewhere, and on the 2700 it’s
the bow seating area. Most adults would
find the seats comfortable for sitting, but
would have a hard time stretching out their
legs. It’s the price you pay for having a nice
sized cuddy. Forward, there’s a generous
anchor locker and space to store the anchor
when not in use. There are two popup
“Ebbtide” embossed stainless steel cleats
and twin docking lights just under the stainless rubrail.
So as I worked my way back through
the boat, I again thought about who and
how they would use the 2700 cuddy bow
rider. There’s no question about it being
a great day boat. With space for up to 12
people, you could entertain a whole crowd
for a great day on the water. The cuddy is a
great place to change from clothes to swim
gear and back again before heading into a
waterfront restaurant for dinner. The cabin
also doubles as perhaps the largest head
space I’ve even seen on anything less than
a cruiser. I particularly like the multiple conversation areas: kids up front, babies and
toddlers out of the sun inside the cuddy,
and adults in the cockpit.
Would it work as a weekend escape boat
I wondered? For a couple, indeed it would,
but at least in most Canadian climates you’d
have to opt for the full side curtains for a
bug-free night’s sleep. But I’ve always been
a proponent of buying a boat not just for
the purchaser’s life such as it may be today,
but for their future and ever evolving life
as well. So would the 2700 grow with your
family? As the kids come along, one baby
could surely sleep in the cuddy’s ample
double berth, and as the family grew, two or
three young kids could curl up on the sofas
in the cockpit, again under the canvas. By
then it might be time for a larger more traditional cruiser.
The largest in the Ebbtide line of twentyone models, the 2700 is made the same
way every Ebbtide boat is built: by hand.
Hand-laid fiberglass and resin, one boat at
a time. No chopper gun, no cookie-cutter
approach, rather the Ebbtide philosophy
is “Better – not more.” Available in twelve
colours from tide white to black, including
some true original colours like silver poly
flake, lime and bright orange, the 2700 is
a unique crossover design that, unlike the
toaster over, actually works both on paper
and on the water. h

Sunreef Yachts
60’ Power Cat
When your dreams come true.

o die, to sleep; to sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there’s the
rub; for in that sleep of death
what dreams may come.”
Oh what dreams may come
indeed! There are no better words than
Shakespeare’s to describe Sunreef Yachts
all new 60 foot Power Cat just launched this
summer in Europe, and making her international debut at the Cannes International Boat
Show 2012.
The 60 Sunreef Power was built in
response to a growing demand in the market for compact yet highly impressive power
yachts. The 60 Sunreef Power is the smaller
sistership to the popular 70 Sunreef Power,
with all the popular features, except now in
a 27.5 foot beam that makes it more convenient for crowded marinas.
The catamaran design is semi-custom
built to the owners’ requirements with four
different layout options: galley up/down,
owner, semi-owner, and charter.
Hull number one of the 60 Sunreef Power
was commissioned by a European owner.
EWHALA is laid out in a semi-owner version
with two double cabins in the forward section, two double cabins in the starboard hull,
and one double, one bunk-bed cabin in the
port hull. All cabins have private bathrooms
and abundant storage.
The interior of the main deck features
the galley and a dining area, while a mezzanine floor located in the midship features the internal helm station and a
lounge area, while also providing access
to the forward guest cabins. The interior design is modern and minimalist, based on wenge and oak contrast,
finished with cream and white upholstery and brushed stainless steel details.
The spacious sun deck is a Sunreef
Yachts specialty. Under the hardtop you’ll
find the external helm station, wet bar,
dining area and a huge sun pad, ideal for
outdoor lounging in the sun. Personally,
I’d choose the Jacuzzi on the flybridge.
Power is supplied by the innovative
JMS boat control system by ZF Marine
Electronics Group, allowing the boat to be
easily maneuvered with a joystick. This feature is very rare on large catamaran yachts,
and Sunreef is proud to be able to offer this
system on this new power model.
Overall EWHALA has a range of up to
3500 nautical miles with a cruising speed
of 20 knots and a top speed of 25 knots.
She boats a living area of an impressive 387
square feet and can sleep 8 to 10.
We think that the 60 Sunreef Power is not
only a dream come true today, but an indication of things to come in smaller boats in the
near future. h

t’s no surprise to anyone that the
marine industry has been through
a tough time as a result of the
economic downturn that began
back in 2008. Boat manufacturers
however on both sides of the 49th
parallel are emerging much stronger
for it. It was the German philosopher
Friedrich Nietzsche that said “what
doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,”
and that is certainly the case today.
Not only are the manufacturers
better organized and structured
financially, but now the research and
development departments that were
virtual mothballed in the later part of
the last decade, are now coming back
to life and producing better and more
innovative products to compete
in the showroom and on the water

discretionary dollars.
All of this spells nothing but great
news for the average boater. New
product offering this year mainly
focus on the aluminum fishing boat

new powerboats under 25 feet.
However, we are beginning to see a
trickle-up effect up into the larger
cruisers and yachts. Overall it’s good
news for everyone, so here’s all the
information that was available to us
at press time.

he distinctive 2013 Sierra Denali
HD models blend heavy-duty
capability with distinctive style
and luxury appointments while including
many new and revised features. A number of previously optional features are
now standard, such as: a Denali-specific
chrome grille that makes the truck instantly recognizable. Additional chrome trim
and body-color bumpers further distinguish it. Sierra Denali also offers a unique
combination of interior style and luxury,
including an exclusive leather-wrapped
and heated steering wheel featuring woodgrain accents, standard nuance perforated
leather (and 12-way power-adjustable)
front seats that can be heated and cooled.

on all models.
The 3500 HD Denali with dual rear
wheels has seventeen-inch forged polished
aluminum wheels and these are available
on the SLT models that have dual rear
wheels. Eighteen-inch forged polished aluminum wheels are standard on 2500HD
Denali models and twenty-inch forged polished aluminum wheels are available.
New exterior color choices include
Sonoma Red Metallic and Heritage Blue

Other choices are Onyx Black, Mocha Steel

Power Options
A Vortec 6.0L gas V-8 with variable valve
timing is matched with the Hydra-Matic
6L90 six-speed automatic transmission as
the standard powertrain across the Sierra
HD model range. This combination delivers
excellent performance and efficiency, with
an emphasis on low-rpm performance. This
year the Vortec 6.0L V8 SFI engine can
now be ordered powered by Compressed
Natural Gas.
The 6.6L Duramax diesel glow plugs
take no more than 3 seconds to warm up
in temperatures as low as -29 C (-20 F) so
that in cold-weather it provides a starting time on par with gas engines. The
engine uses a high pressure piezo-activated fuel system for greater efficiency
and improved performance with reduced
emissions, developing 397 horsepower at
3000 rpm and delivers 765 pounds-feet
of torque at 1600 rpm for greater ability
to pull your trailer up hills. The combination of the 6.6L diesel and Allison 1000 sixspeed automatic transmission powertrain
is available on all 2500HD and 3500HD
models. The transmission features driver
shift control with tap up/tap down shifting
and a patented elevated idle mode cab
warm-up feature. Also, the tow/haul mode
reduces shift cycling for better control and
improved cooling when towing or hauling
heavy loads.
The 6.6L diesel engine uses Selective
Catalytic Reduction after-treatment system with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) injection to provide the best overall diesel
characteristics and performance. You can
drive about 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles)

between DEF refills. Combustion and aftertreatment have been optimized to provide about 1,125 km (700 miles) between
diesel particulate filter regenerations – a
75-percent improvement over the previous system and significant contributor to
improved fuel efficiency, as the regeneration process requires additional fuel.
Frame &
Suspension
All Sierra HD models feature fully
boxed frame assemblies. Redesigned last
year, the frames have reinforced cross sections and use more high-strength steel for
greater durability, higher towing capacity
and improved ride and handling. The front
sections are hydro-formed.
Five different torsion bars support five
different front gross axle weight ratings
with short-long arm/torsion bar front
suspension featuring forged steel upper
control arms and precision-machined cast
iron lower control arms help stabilize the
range of trim heights of various models
under load, while enhancing appearance,
handling, durability, tire wear and alignment. The trim height can be adjusted
on each bar via a single bolt. The upper
shock mount attachment design is positively connected to the frame with two
fasteners, eliminating squeaks and clunks,
while supporting higher load capability
and increased durability.
Asymmetrical leaf-spring design minimizes axle hop and enhances traction
control efficiency, with two-stage leafspring design on 2500HD models, and a
three-stage design on the 3500HD model.
All models feature 3-inch-wide (76 mm)
leaf springs. Four-wheel disc brakes with
hydroboost are standard on all models,
with four-wheel, four-channel ABS standard on all single-rear-wheel models and a
three-channel system is standard on dualrear-wheel models.
The Heavy Duty Trailering package
with integrated brake controller and
Eaton® automatic locking differential are
now standard on all Sierra 3500HD models. With a crew cab/long box and 6.6L
engine you can tow a boat and trailer of
up to 10,432 kilograms (23,000 lbs), and
you can tow a conventional boat and
trailer of up to 8,164 kilograms (18,000
lbs) with the box-tube designed framemounted hitch . Heated outside and power-adjustable vertical camper-style mirrors
with turn signal indicators are available on
2500HD Denali and standard on 3500HD
Denali models.
When you are stopped on a hill of 5% or
greater, sensors automatically engage the
hill start system to hold the brakes for 1.5
seconds, or until you press the gas pedal
to give you time to switch from the brake
pedal to the gas pedal without rolling back.
The standard exhaust brake system
allows you to control the speed of the
truck and heavy trailer when navigating
long downhill grades without the fear of
the brakes overheating and fading. Trailer
sway can unnerve any driver when towing a large trailer. Sensors detect any
sway and intervene with braking and/or
reduced engine power to bring the trailer
under control and keep it on its intended
path quickly.
Summary
Denali is the designation that General
Motors gives to the top-of-the-line models. It reflects GMC’s loftiest engineering and design achievements and delivers the best of all worlds to the driver.
Whether you are towing a boat, travel
trailer or fifth wheel, the GMC Sierra
Denali will provide the power that you
need to get you to the destination of your
choice in luxurious style. S P E C I F I C A T I O N S

Mercury Diesel TDI
engines power BERMUDA
CHALLENGE RECORD
Twin Mercury Diesel TDI engines helped
Chris Fertig capture the Bermuda Challenge
powerboat endurance world record on Aug.
5, 2012. Fertig, a Virginia Beach native, completed the approximate 760-mile run from
New York to Bermuda in 21 hours and 39
minutes, beating a decade-old record by 44
minutes. Fertig’s 37-foot Statement Marine
boat was powered by twin 4.2L 350hp turbocharged Mercury Diesel TDI engines. Fertig
was joined by co-pilot Tyson Garvin who
used an integrated navigational system from
Simrad Yachting including Simrad NSS and
NSE multifunction displays, high definition
radar, BSM-2 Broadband Sonar, AP28 autopilot and Sirius real-time satellite weather.
“We’re honored Chris chose Mercury
Diesel TDI engines for this recordbreaking run,” said Martin Bass, vice
president of category management at
Mercury Marine. “Events like the Bermuda
Challenge showcase what our engines
are capable of, the perfect mix of performance, efficiency and reliability.”
The Bermuda Challenge, established in
1996 by Boating magazine, is an endurance
race that starts at the Statue of Liberty in
New York harbor and concludes at the sea
buoy in St. Georges, Bermuda.
The race was established to promote
newer technology and the advances boat
and engine companies have made to make
long-distance runs in smaller boats possible. Fertig’s boat included several modern
technologies, including the Mercury Axius
propulsion system – the world’s first fully
intuitive piloting system for powerboats
with features that include joystick control,
auto heading, auto pilot and electronic
anchoring – and the Mercury Connected
Vessel satellite tracking technology that is
included with the Mercury Theft Deterrent
Premium Package.
Fertig attempted to break the record last
summer, but was forced to turn back due to
inclement weather. The previous record of
22 hours, 23 minutes was set in 2002 by Neil
Burnie in a catamaran.

Pontoon Industry

Campion Marine Inc and Biltmore
Marine Industries LLC
“Game Changer”
Fred Cotey, an icon in the marine industry who
helped develop changes in pontoon design, performance, safety standards and engineering, has passed.
“Fred’s vision and work within the industry will be
greatly missed, but the standards he set will carry on
to future generations of boaters,” says Bob Menne,
President of Premier Marine. “He was a true ambassador of boating.”
Cotey began his career in with Luger Boats
where he designed and developed fiberglass boat
kits. He then worked as a production manager for
HydroStream developing and building high-speed
performance boats. He spent eight years with Forester
Boats before moving to Premier Marine in 1992.
At Premier, Cotey spearheaded the development
of the PTX performance package to accommodate
the power and size of stern-drive engines in pontoons. In 1994 Premier introduced the PTX package to
the outboard market, setting the standard for performance, handling and ride across the industry.
Cotey served on the American Boating and Yacht
Council (ABYC) committee to write the ABYC H-35
standard that regulates the powering and loading
capacity of pontoons. He also participated in setting
marine industry safety standards as a member of the
National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA)
committee.

Campion Marine Inc and Biltmore Marine Industries LLC recently
announced what they believe will be a “game changer” for the marine industry. Campion Marine has entered into an exclusive licensing agreement to
build the Biltmore Fibertoon® Boats.
Brock Elliott, President of Campion Marine said “that many will initially
ask; what is a Fibertoon®?” “The Campion built Biltmore is a pontoon boat like
no other our industry has ever seen or experienced! The patent protected boat
with its tri pontoon hull is produced entirely of composite materials including
the side walls, helm, seating bases and so much more than ever offered before.
Once these Fibertoon® boats enter the market, get into Dealerships and Boat
Shows throughout the World, we are most confident the boating consumer is
going to respond with great delight.”
Anthony Kalil, Designer of the Biltmore Fibertoon®, says “that the
advancement of composite construction has finally reached the point where
costs, performance, styling, maintenance and function are more advantageous
than aluminum. The Biltmore Fibertoon® will introduce pontoon buyers to
features, luxuries, water sports, and performance never dreamed attainable
with the traditional aluminum construction. We believe that the design of this
pontoon boat will rock the fastest growing and strongest segment of the boating industry in North America, and create a new genre of boat for the boating
consumer.”
The Biltmore Fibertoon® marks an industry first for such a product, representing a true “game changer” by offering the highest luxury to this market
segment and surpassing the expectations of the aluminium pontoon buyer
with innovative features and benefits unique to the Biltmore Fibertoon®.
This transaction and announcement have been one year in the making and we are today pleased to announce Campion Marine is going into full
development and production of the Biltmore Fibertoon® utilizing Campion’s
award winning GREEN technology and procedures, immediately!

Empty Slip-ers
Learning what we’ve got when it’s gone.
R
egular readers of this column
will remember that this time
last fall I wrote ‘parting is such
sweet sorrow’ in reference to
closing up our boats for the
last time at the end of the season. They
will also reflect back on last spring’s ‘Oh
darn, foot-itis again’ column in which
I bemoaned that fact that our kids got
bigger – a lot bigger - over the winter,
and that somehow magically our boat
seemed smaller – a lot smaller the first
few weekends of this past season. So we
as a family started to ‘just look’.
You all know what that means. One
word: “Trouble”.
We looked for the new (to us) boat in
the boatyards of not only our own backyard of Georgian Bay, but also in the virtual internet boatyards, and in the pages
of stacks and stacks of used boat for sale
magazines.
We had on our “wander-list” a family trip across Canada and while the kids
were still young enough, we seized the
chance and took it this past summer. We
sold our beloved 30’ Sea Ray Sundancer
“Captain Daddy” and traded it – very
temporarily – for a land yacht: a 34’ class
A Damon motorhome. (And that happened only because there is no way to
go across Canada by water.) On the trip
we even looked in the marinas and brokerages all across our great country for
our “new” boat.
It’s now fall, and the boating season is
over, and we are unfortunately still boatless. I’ve heard of the raw emptiness that
parents feel when they go from having
spent years raising a family - with all the
busy-ness and excitement and constant
goings-on that entails - only to watch the
kids go off to university and suddenly all
is quiet. The term society uses to refer to
these folks is “empty-nesters”.
Well, it seemed very strange this fall to
46
Power Boating Canada | Volume 27 Number 5
not be winterizing our boat. There was no
final overnight on the hook, no haul out
weekend. No washing. No scrubbing. No
waxing. No covering. There was nothing
in our slip to haul out to do any of those
things to. I think the correct term to refer
to us might be “empty slip-ers”.
The bright side of all of this of course
comes from the kids. In their own way,
in their own time initially, and yet often
and repeatedly since then, each of our
three girls have expressed how very much
they miss ‘the boat’. (They are so quick to
add that they don’t want to sound unappreciative because the trip across Canada
was spectacular, and they enjoyed the
RV.) But it isn’t ‘the boat’. Nothing can
replace the boat. They miss the boat.
They want it back.
And so we will continue our quest over
this coming winter in the boat shows and
boat yards – virtual and otherwise - in
search of that which feeds our collective
family soul. Indeed, in the words of Joni
Mitchell, sometimes you just ‘don’t know
what you’ve got till it’s gone’. h

The entry-level 195RX is priced to sell. It offers the highest quality, most fuel efficiency, and
best performance in its class...and the best price!
Even though this boat is priced to get you out on the water, it still has more standard amenities
than the competitors' similar entry-level models. It is also economical, clean and fuel-efficient,
and comes standard with a catalyzed EFI four-stroke engine with power steering.
If you're comparing models, and we encourage you to do so, have a look at the 195RX before
you purchase. We think you will be happy that you did!
